This paper is the first study to apply deep mutual learning (DML) to end-to-end ASR models. In DML, multiple models are trained simultaneously and collaboratively by mimicking each other throughout the training process, which helps to attain the global optimum and prevent models from making over-confident predictions. While previous studies applied DML to simple multi-class classification problems, there are no studies that have used it on more complex sequence-to-sequence mapping problems. For this reason, this paper presents a method to apply DML to state-of-the-art Transformer-based end-to-end ASR models. In particular, we propose to combine DML with recent representative training techniques. i.e., label smoothing, scheduled sampling, and SpecAugment, each of which are essential for powerful end-to-end ASR models. We expect that these training techniques work well with DML because DML has complementary characteristics. We experimented with two setups for Japanese ASR tasks: large-scale modeling and compact modeling. We demonstrate that DML improves the ASR performance of both modeling setups compared with conventional learning methods including knowledge distillation. We also show that combining DML with the existing training techniques effectively improves ASR performance.

We present the Swiss Parliaments Corpus (SPC), an automatically aligned Swiss German speech to Standard German text corpus. This first version of the corpus is based on publicly available data of the Bernese cantonal parliament and consists of 293 hours of data. It was created using a novel forced sentence alignment procedure and an alignment quality estimator, which can be used to trade off corpus size and quality. We trained Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models as baselines on different subsets of the data and achieved a Word Error Rate (WER) of 0.278 and a BLEU score of 0.586 on the SP…
This paper presents an "elitist approach" for extracting automatically well-realized speech sounds with high confidence. The elitist approach uses a speech recognition system based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM). The HMM are trained on speech sounds which are systematically well-detected in an iterative procedure. The results show that, by using the HMM models defined in the training phase, the speech recognizer detects reliably specific speech sounds with a small rate of errors.
This study investigates the performance of personalized automatic speech recognition (ASR) for recognizing disordered speech using small amounts of per-speaker adaptation data. We trained personalized models for 195 individuals with different types and severities of speech impairment with training sets ranging in size from <1 minute to 18-20 minutes of speech data. Word error rate (WER) thresholds were selected to determine Success Percentage (the percentage of personalized models reaching the target WER) in different application scenarios. For the home automation scenario, 79% of speakers rea…
In this paper, we describe KT-Speech-Crawler: an approach for automatic dataset construction for speech recognition by crawling YouTube videos. We outline several filtering and post-processing steps, which extract samples that can be used for training end-to-end neural speech recognition systems. In our experiments, we demonstrate that a single-core version of the crawler can obtain around 150 hours of transcribed speech within a day, containing an estimated 3.5% word error rate in the transcriptions. Automatically collected samples contain reading and spontaneous speech recorded in various co…

Spoken language understanding (SLU) tasks are usually solved by first transcribing an utterance with automatic speech recognition (ASR) and then feeding the output to a text-based model. Recent advances in self-supervised representation learning for speech data have focused on improving the ASR component. We investigate whether representation learning for speech has matured enough to replace ASR in SLU. We compare learned speech features from wav2vec 2.0, state-of-the-art ASR transcripts, and the ground truth text as input for a novel speech-based named entity recognition task, a cardiac arres…
While current state-of-the-art Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems achieve high accuracy on typical speech, they suffer from significant performance degradation on disordered speech and other atypical speech patterns. Personalization of ASR models, a commonly applied solution to this problem, is usually performed in a server-based training environment posing problems around data privacy, delayed model-update times, and communication cost for copying data and models between mobile device and server infrastructure. In this paper, we present an approach to on-device based ASR personalizati…
Automatic speech recognition models are often adapted to improve their accuracy in a new domain. A potential drawback of model adaptation to new domains is catastrophic forgetting, where the Word Error Rate on the original domain is significantly degraded. This paper addresses the situation when we want to simultaneously adapt automatic speech recognition models to a new domain and limit the degradation of accuracy on the original domain without access to the original training dataset. We propose several techniques such as a limited training strategy and regularized adapter modules for the Tra…

Automatic speech recognition enables a wide range of current and emerging applications such as automatic transcription, multimedia content analysis, and natural human-computer interfaces. This paper provides a glimpse of the opportunities and challenges that parallelism provides for automatic speech recognition and related application research from the point of view of speech researchers. The increasing parallelism in computing platforms opens three major possibilities for speech recognition systems: improving recognition accuracy in non-ideal, everyday noisy environments; increasing recogniti…
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has been widely researched with supervised approaches, while many low-resourced languages lack audio-text aligned data, and supervised methods cannot be applied on them. In this work, we propose a framework to achieve unsupervised ASR on a read English speech dataset, where audio and text are unaligned. In the first stage, each word-level audio segment in the utterances is represented by a vector representation extracted by a sequence-of-sequence autoencoder, in which phonetic information and speaker information are disentangled. Secondly, semantic embeddings…

This work consists of creating a system of the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) based on a system of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for the Arabic language using the tool CMU Sphinx3 [1], based on the approach of HMM. To this work, we have constructed a corpus of six hours of speech recordings with a number of nine speakers. we find in the robustness to noise a grounds for the choice of the HMM approach [2]. the results achieved are encouraging since our corpus is made by only nine speakers, but they are always reasons that open the door for other improvement works.
Recent developments using End-to-End Deep Learning models have been shown to have near or better performance than state of the art Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) on Automatic Speech Recognition tasks. These models tend to be lighter weight and require less training time than traditional RNN-based approaches. However, these models take frequentist approach to weight training. In theory, network weights are drawn from a latent, intractable probability distribution. We introduce BayesSpeech for end-to-end Automatic Speech Recognition. BayesSpeech is a Bayesian Transformer Network where these in…
We propose a novel multi-task pre-training method for Speech Emotion Recognition (SER). We pre-train SER model simultaneously on Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and sentiment classification tasks to make the acoustic ASR model more ``emotion aware''. We generate targets for the sentiment classification using text-to-sentiment model trained on publicly available data. Finally, we fine-tune the acoustic ASR on emotion annotated speech data. We evaluated the proposed approach on the MSP-Podcast dataset, where we achieved the best reported concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.41 for v…
We present EasyASR, a distributed machine learning platform for training and serving large-scale Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models, as well as collecting and processing audio data at scale. Our platform is built upon the Machine Learning Platform for AI of Alibaba Cloud. Its main functionality is to support efficient learning and inference for end-to-end ASR models on distributed GPU clusters. It allows users to learn ASR models with either pre-defined or user-customized network architectures via simple user interface. On EasyASR, we have produced state-of-the-art results over several …
Many of the recent advances in speech separation are primarily aimed at synthetic mixtures of short audio utterances with high degrees of overlap. Most of these approaches need an additional stitching step to stitch the separated speech chunks for long form audio. Since most of the approaches involve Permutation Invariant training (PIT), the order of separated speech chunks is nondeterministic and leads to difficulty in accurately stitching homogenous speaker chunks for downstream tasks like Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). Also, most of these models are trained with synthetic mixtures and …

This study reports our efforts to improve automatic recognition of suprasegmentals by fine-tuning wav2vec 2.0 with CTC, a method that has been successful in automatic speech recognition. We demonstrate that the method can improve the state-of-the-art on automatic recognition of syllables, tones, and pitch accents. Utilizing segmental information, by employing tonal finals or tonal syllables as recognition units, can significantly improve Mandarin tone recognition. Language models are helpful when tonal syllables are used as recognition units, but not helpful when tones are recognition units. F…
Speech recognition in mixed language has difficulties to adapt end-to-end framework due to the lack of data and overlapping phone sets, for example in words such as "one" in English and "wàn" in Chinese. We propose a CTC-based end-to-end automatic speech recognition model for intra-sentential English-Mandarin code-switching. The model is trained by joint training on monolingual datasets, and fine-tuning with the mixed-language corpus. During the decoding process, we apply a beam search and combine CTC predictions and language model score. The proposed method is effective in leveraging monoling…
Large language models have been proven quite beneficial for a variety of automatic speech recognition tasks in Google. We summarize results on Voice Search and a few YouTube speech transcription tasks to highlight the impact that one can expect from increasing both the amount of training data, and the size of the language model estimated from such data. Depending on the task, availability and amount of training data used, language model size and amount of work and care put into integrating them in the lattice rescoring step we observe reductions in word error rate between 6% and 10% relative, …

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) via call is essential for various applications, including AI for contact center (AICC) services. Despite the advancement of ASR, however, most publicly available call-based speech corpora such as Switchboard are old-fashioned. Also, most existing call corpora are in English and mainly focus on open domain dialog or general scenarios such as audiobooks. Here we introduce a new large-scale Korean call-based speech corpus under a goal-oriented dialog scenario from more than 11,000 people, i.e., ClovaCall corpus. ClovaCall includes approximately 60,000 pairs of a…

Automatic Cued Speech Recognition (ACSR) provides an intelligent human-machine interface for visual communications, where the Cued Speech (CS) system utilizes lip movements and hand gestures to code spoken language for hearing-impaired people. Previous ACSR approaches often utilize direct feature concatenation as the main fusion paradigm. However, the asynchronous modalities i.e., lip, hand shape and hand position) in CS may cause interference for feature concatenation. To address this challenge, we propose a transformer based cross-modal mutual learning framework to prompt multi-modal interac…

This paper addresses automatic quality assessment of spoken language translation (SLT). This relatively new task is defined and formalized as a sequence labeling problem where each word in the SLT hypothesis is tagged as good or bad according to a large feature set. We propose several word confidence estimators (WCE) based on our automatic evaluation of transcription (ASR) quality, translation (MT) quality, or both (combined ASR+MT). This research work is possible because we built a specific corpus which contains 6.7k utterances for which a quintuplet containing: ASR output, verbatim transcrip…
This paper provides an overall introduction of our Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems for Southeast Asian languages. As not much existing work has been carried out on such regional languages, a few difficulties should be addressed before building the systems: limitation on speech and text resources, lack of linguistic knowledge, etc. This work takes Bahasa Indonesia and Thai as examples to illustrate the strategies of collecting various resources required for building ASR systems.

This paper describes methods for evaluating automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in comparison with human perception results, using measures derived from linguistic distinctive features. Error patterns in terms of manner, place and voicing are presented, along with an examination of confusion matrices via a distinctive-feature-distance metric. These evaluation methods contrast with conventional performance criteria that focus on the phone or word level, and are intended to provide a more detailed profile of ASR system performance,as well as a means for direct comparison with human percep…

Transcribing voice communications in NASA's launch control center is important for information utilization. However, automatic speech recognition in this environment is particularly challenging due to the lack of training data, unfamiliar words in acronyms, multiple different speakers and accents, and conversational characteristics of speaking. We used bidirectional deep recurrent neural networks to train and test speech recognition performance. We showed that data augmentation and custom language models can improve speech recognition accuracy. Transcribing communications from the launch contr…
We propose autoencoding speaker conversion for training data augmentation in automatic speech translation. This technique directly transforms an audio sequence, resulting in audio synthesized to resemble another speaker's voice. Our method compares favorably to SpecAugment on English$\to$French and English$\to$Romanian automatic speech translation (AST) tasks as well as on a low-resource English automatic speech recognition (ASR) task. Further, in ablations, we show the benefits of both quantity and diversity in augmented data. Finally, we show that we can combine our approach with augmentatio…

With the evolution of neural network based methods, automatic speech recognition (ASR) field has been advanced to a level where building an application with speech interface is a reality. In spite of these advances, building a real-time speech recogniser faces several problems such as low recognition accuracy, domain constraint, and out-of-vocabulary words. The low recognition accuracy problem is addressed by improving the acoustic model, language model, decoder and by rescoring the N-best list at the output of the decoder. We are considering the N-best list rescoring approach to improve the r…

Form about four decades human beings have been dreaming of an intelligent machine which can master the natural speech. In its simplest form, this machine should consist of two subsystems, namely automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speech understanding (SU). The goal of ASR is to transcribe natural speech while SU is to understand the meaning of the transcription. Recognizing and understanding a spoken sentence is obviously a knowledge-intensive process, which must take into account all variable information about the speech communication process, from acoustics to semantics and pragmatics. Today, the vocabulary size for language models in large vocabulary speech recognition is typically several hundreds of thousands of words. While this is already sufficient in some applications, the out-of-vocabulary words are still limiting the usability in others. In agglutinative languages the vocabulary for conversational speech should include millions of word forms to cover the spelling variations due to colloquial pronunciations, in addition to the word compounding and inflections. Very large vocabularies are also needed, for example, when the recognition of rare proper names is important…
A new label smoothing method that makes use of prior knowledge of a language at human level, homophone, is proposed in this paper for automatic speech recognition (ASR). Compared with its forerunners, the proposed method uses pronunciation knowledge of homophones in a more complex way. End-to-end ASR models that learn acoustic model and language model jointly and modelling units of characters are necessary conditions for this method. Experiments with hybrid CTC sequence-to-sequence model show that the new method can reduce character error rate (CER) by 0.4% absolutely.
When evaluating the performance of automatic speech recognition models, usually word error rate within a certain dataset is used. Special care must be taken in understanding the dataset in order to report realistic performance numbers. We argue that many performance numbers reported probably underestimate the expected error rate. We conduct experiments controlling for selection bias, gender as well as overlap (between training and test data) in content, voices, and recording conditions. We find that content overlap has the biggest impact, but other factors like gender also play a role.
