We perform a systematic analysis of standard model extensions with an additional anomaly-free gauge $U(1)$ symmetry, to generate Dirac neutrino masses at one loop. Under such symmetry, standard model fields could either transform or be invariant, corresponding to an active $U(1)_X$ or a dark $U(1)_D$ symmetry, respectively. Having an anomaly-free symmetry imposes nontrivial conditions to the number and charges of the unavoidable new states. We perform an intensive scan, looking for non-anomalous solutions for given number of extra chiral fermions. In particular, we concentrate on solutions giving rise to scotogenic neutrino masses via the effective Dirac mass operator. We study the cases where the Dirac mass operator with dimension 5 or 6, is mediated by Dirac or Majorana states, and corresponds to an active $U(1)_X$ or a dark $U(1)_D$ symmetry. Finally, we comment on the solutions featuring no massless chiral fermions.
We assume a dark $U_{D}$ symmetric hidden sector and explore its possible content such that neutrino mass and Dark Matter are generated through the scotogenic mechanism. The hidden sector is considered analogue to the Standard Model, namely the charge assignment of hidden fermions is chiral and anomaly-free. Moreover, $U_{D}$ is assumed broken by an only Higgs singlet that also generates masses to all hidden fermions, therefore the charge assignment is subjected to additional restriction. We search by computer program for charge assignments satisfying all these conditions, and identify the res…
We show that the scotogenic dark symmetry can be obtained as a residual subgroup of the global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry already present in Standard Model. We propose a general framework where the $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to an even $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$ subgroup, setting the general conditions for neutrinos to be Majorana and the dark matter stability in terms of the residual $\mathcal{Z}_{2n}$. Under this general framework, as examples, we build a class of simple models where, in the scotogenic spirit, the dark matter candidate is the lightest particle running inside the neutri…
We study the gauged $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ scotogenic model with emphasis on latest measurement of LHCb $R_{K^{(*)}}$ anomaly and AMS-02 positron excess. In this model, neutrino masses are induced at one-loop level with $Z_2$-odd particles, i.e., right-handed neutrinos $N_\ell(\ell=e,μ,τ)$ and inert scalar doublet $η$ inside the loop. Meanwhile, the gauged $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry is broken spontaneously by the scalar singlet $S$, resulting to the massive gauge boson $Z'$. Provided certain couplings to quarks induced by heavy vector-like quarks, the gauge boson $Z'$ would contribute to the transiti…
We present a scotogenic model, i.e. a one-loop neutrino mass model with dark right-handed neutrino gauge singlets and one inert dark scalar gauge doublet $η$, which has symmetries that lead to co-bimaximal mixing, i.e. to an atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23} = 45^\circ$ and to a $CP$-violating phase $δ= \pm π/2$, while the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ remains arbitrary. The symmetries consist of softly broken lepton numbers $L_α$ ($α= e,μ,τ$), a non-standard $CP$ symmetry, and three $Z_2$ symmetries. We indicate two possibilities for extending the model to the quark sector. Since the model has, beside…
We consider a model with three Higgs doublet in a discrete $B - L\times \mathbb{Z}_3$ discrete symmetries. Two of the scalar doublets are inert due to the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry. We calculated all the mass spectra in the scalar and lepton sectors and accommodate the leptonic mixing matrix as well.
Radiative Dirac neutrino masses and their mixing are linked to dark matter through the non-Abelian discrete symmetry $A_5$ of the 4-dimensional pentatope, softly broken to $A_4$ of the 3-dimensional tetrahedron. This unifying understanding of neutrino family structure from dark matter is made possible through the interplay of gauge symmetry, renormalizable Lagrangian field theory, and softly broken discrete symmetries. Dark neutral fermions are produced through Higgs decay.
Modular symmetries have been impeccable in neutrino and quark sectors. This motivated us, therefore, to propose a variant of scotogenic model based on modular $A_4$ symmetry to realize the neutrino mass generation at one-loop level through radiative mechanism. Alongside, the lepton flavour violating process $μ\to e γ$ and the muon $g-2$ anomaly are also addressed. The lightest Majorana fermions turn out to be potential dark matter candidates, made stable by suitable assignment of modular weights. The relic density of the same has been computed with annihilations mediated by inert scalars and n…
We have studied the scotogenic model proposed by Ernest Ma, which is an extension of the Standard Model by three singlet right-handed neutrinos and a scalar doublet. This model proposes that the light neutrinos acquire a non-zero mass at 1-loop level. In this work, the realisation of the scotogenic model is done by using discrete symmetries $A_{4}\times Z_{4}$ in which the non-zero $θ_{13}$ is produced by assuming a non-degeneracy in the loop factor. Considering different lepton flavor violating(LFV) processes such as $l_α\longrightarrow l_βγ$ and $l_α\longrightarrow 3l_β$, their impact on neu…
We construct the one-loop and two-loop scotogenic models for Dirac neutrino mass generation in the context of $U(1)_{B-L}$ extensions of standard model. It is indicated that the total number of intermediate fermion singlets is uniquely fixed by anomaly free condition and the new particles may have exotic $B-L$ charges so that the direct SM Yukawa mass term $\barν_Lν_R\overline{ϕ^0}$ and the Majorana mass term $(m_N/2)\overline{ν_R^C}ν_R$ are naturally forbidden. After the spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry, the discrete $Z_{2}$ or $Z_{3}$ symmetry appears as the residual symmetry an…
We propose a scotogenic model for generating neutrino masses through a three-loop seesaw. It is a minimally extended inert doublet model with a spontaneously broken global symmetry $U(1)'$ and a preserved $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. The three-loop suppression allows the new particles to have masses at the TeV scale without fine-tuning the Yukawa couplings. The model leads to a rich phenomenology while satisfying all the current constraints imposed by neutrinoless double-beta decay, charged-lepton flavor violation, and electroweak precision observables. The relatively large Yukawa couplings lead t…
We consider an extension of the standard model with three Higgs doublet model and $S_3\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetries. Two of the scalar doublets are inert due to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We have calculated all the mass spectra in the scalar and lepton sectors and accommodated the leptonic mixing matrix as well. We also show that the model has scalar and pseudoscalar candidates to dark matter. Constraints on the parameters of the model coming from the decay $μ\to eγ$ were considered and we found signals between the current and the upcoming experimental limits, and from that decay …
In the context of $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_χ$, where $U(1)_χ$ comes from $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, supplemented by the non-Abelian discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry for three lepton families, Dirac neutrino masses and their mixing are radiatively generated through dark matter. The gauge $U(1)_χ$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry is broken softly and spontaneously. Together, they result in two residual symmetries, a global $U(1)_L$ lepton number and a dark symmetry, which may be $Z_2$, $Z_3$, or $U(1)_D$ depending on what scalar breaks $U(1…
We study the renormalization group equations of Ma's scotogenic model, which generates an active neutrino mass at 1-loop level. In addition to other benefits, the main advantage of the mechanism exploited in this model is to lead to a natural loop-suppression of the neutrino mass, and therefore to an explanation for its smallness. However, since the structure of the neutrino mass matrix is altered compared to the ordinary type I seesaw case, the corresponding running is altered as well. We have derived the full set of renormalization group equations for the scotogenic model which, to our knowl…
If neutrinos are truly Dirac fermions, the smallness of their masses may still be natural if certain symmetries exist beyond those of the standard model of quarks and leptons. We perform a systematic study of how this may occur at tree level and in one loop. We also propose a scotogenic version of the left-right gauge model with naturally small Dirac neutrino masses in one loop.
We perform a systematic analysis of Standard Model extensions with an additional anomaly-free gauge $U(1)$ symmetry, to generate tree-level Dirac neutrino masses. An anomaly-free symmetry demands nontrivial conditions on the charges of the unavoidable new states. An intensive scan was performed, looking for solutions generating neutrino masses by the type-I and type-II tree-level Dirac seesaw mechanism, via operators with dimension 5 and 6, that correspond to active or dark symmetries. Special attention was paid to the cases featuring no extra massless chiral fermions or multicomponent dark ma…
Anomaly of discrete symmetries can be defined as the Jacobian of the path-integral measure. We assume that an anomalous discrete symmetry at low energy is remnant of an anomaly free discrete symmetry, and that its anomaly is cancelled by the Green-Schwarz(GS) mechanism at a more fundamental scale. If the Kac-Moody levels k_i assume non-trivial values, the GS cancellation conditions of anomaly modify the ordinary unification of gauge couplings. This is most welcome, because for a renormalizable model to be realistic any non-abelian family symmetry, which should not be hardly broken low-energy, …
We explore a simple but extremely predictive extension of the scotogenic model. We promote the scotogenic symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to the flavour non-Abelian symmetry $Σ(81)$, which can also automatically protect dark matter stability. In addition, $Σ(81)$ leads to striking predictions in the lepton sector: only Inverted Ordering is realised, the absolute neutrino mass scale is predicted to be $m_\text{lightest} \approx 7.5 \times 10^{-4}$ eV and the Majorana phases are correlated in such a way that $|m_{ee}| \approx 0.018$ eV. The model also leads to a strong correlation between the solar mixi…
Discrete Abelian symmetries ($\mathbb{Z}_N$) are a common "artifact" of beyond the standard model physics models. They provide different avenues for constructing consistent scenarios for lepton and quark mixing patterns, radiative neutrino mass generation as well as dark matter stabilization. We argue that these symmetries can arise from the spontaneous breaking of the Abelian $U(1)$ factors contained in the global flavor symmetry transformations of the gauge invariant kinetic Lagrangian. This will be the case provided the ultra-violet completion responsible for the Yukawa structure involves s…
We propose a one-loop radiative Majorana-type neutrino-mass matrix without any kind of additional symmetries by introducing two leptoquark-like bosons only. In this scenario, we show that the anomaly appearing in the process $b\to s\ell\bar\ell$ can be explained without any conflicts against various constraints such as lepton-flavor violations, flavor-changing neutral currents, oblique parameters $ΔS,\ ΔT$, and the Drell-Yan process. We make the predictions for the flavor-violating lepton-pair production ($eμ$, $eτ$, and $μτ$) at the LHC, as well as the cross sections for pair production of th…
The notion of U(1) lepton number (which may only be softly broken) is applied to models of dark matter which interacts with leptons. Previous scotogenic models of Majorana or Dirac neutrino mass are shown to be derivable in this framework without additional symmetries. Only complete renormalizable theories are considered. An explicit class of models with $Z_n$ ($n \geq 5$) lepton and dark symmetry for Dirac neutrinos is derived, as well as an example of $Z_3$ dark symmetry.
We suggest a rigorous generalization of the pseudoscalar mesons mixing description in SU(3) basis. It is shown that the appearance of extra massive state nicknamed in the paper as glueball is unavoidable in any scheme with more than one angle. In this framework we develop the dispersive approach to Abelian axial anomaly of isoscalar non-singlet current. Combining it with the analysis of experimental data of charmonium radiative decays ratio we get the number of quite strict constraints for mixing parameters. Our analysis favors the equal values of axial currents coupling constants which may be…
We discuss non-Abelian discrete R symmetries which might have some conceivable relevance for model building. The focus is on settings with N=1 supersymmetry, where the superspace coordinate transforms in a one-dimensional representation of the non-Abelian discrete symmetry group. We derive anomaly constraints for such symmetries and find that novel patterns of Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation emerge. In addition we show that perfect groups, also in the non-R case, are always anomaly-free. An important property of models with non-Abelian discrete R symmetries is that superpartners come in dif…
The latest results of CDF-II collaboration show a discrepancy of $7σ$ with standard model expectations. There is, also, a $4.2σ$ discrepancy in the measurement of muon magnetic moment reported by Fermilab. We study the connection between neutrino masses, dark matter, muon ($g-2$) and W-boson mass anomaly within a single coherent framework based on $Z_{4}$ extension of the scotogenic model with vector like lepton (VLL). Neutrino masses are generated at one loop level. The inert doublet, also, provide a solution to W-boson mass anomaly through correction in oblique parameters $S$, $T$ and $U$. T…
Relying on Dirac neutrinos allows an infinity of anomaly-free discrete gauge symmetries to be imposed on the Supersymmetric Standard Model, some of which are GUT-compatible.
Assuming that finite family symmetries are gauged, we derive discrete anomaly conditions for various non-Abelian groups. We thus provide new constraints for flavor model building, in which discrete non-Abelian symmetries are employed to explain the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern in the lepton sector.
Adding right-handed neutrino singlets and/or fermion triplets to the particle content of the Standard Model allows for the implementation of the seesaw mechanism to give mass to neutrinos and, simultaneously, for the construction of anomaly-free gauge group extensions of the theory. We consider Abelian extensions based on an extra U(1)_X gauge symmetry, where X is an arbitrary linear combination of the baryon number B and the individual lepton numbers L_{e,mu,tau}. By requiring cancellation of gauge anomalies, we perform a detailed analysis in order to identify the charge assignments under the…
Compactified string theories give rise to discrete symmetries which are essential if they are to provide a realistic low energy theory. We find that in a class of four dimensional string theories these symmetries are constrained by similar conditions to those discrete anomaly cancellation conditions found in the case the discrete symmetry is a residue of a spontaneously broken gauge symmetry. Such conditions strongly constrain the allowed form of the low energy effective theory.
In the context of A_4 symmetry, neutrino tribimaximal mixing is achieved through the breaking of A_4 to Z_3 (Z_2) in the charged-lepton (neutrino) sector respectively. The implied vacuum misalignment of the (1,1,1) and (1,0,0) directions in A_4 space is a difficult technical problem, and cannot be treated without many auxiliary fields and symmetries (and perhaps extra dimensions). It is pointed out here that an alternative scenario exists with A_4 alone and no redundant fields, if neutrino masses are "scotogenic", i.e. radiatively induced by dark scalar doublets as recently proposed.
Motivated by the Xenon1T excess in electron-recoil measurements, we investigate the prospects of probing axion-like particles (ALP) in lepton flavor violation experiments. In particular, we identify such ALP as a pseudo-Goldstone from the spontaneous breaking of the flavor symmetries that explain the mixing structure of the Standard Model leptons. We present the case of the flavor symmetries being a non-Abelian U(2) and the ALP originating from its U(1) subgroup, which is anomaly-free with the Standard Model group. We build two explicit realistic examples that reproduce leptonic masses and mix…
We study anomalies of non-Abelian discrete symmetries; which part of non-Abelian group is anomaly free and which part can be anomalous. It is found that the anomaly-free elements of the group $G$ generate a normal subgroup $G_0$ of $G$ and the residue class group $G/G_0$, which becomes the anomalous part of $G$, is isomorphic to a single cyclic group. The derived subgroup $D(G)$ of $G$ is useful to study the anomaly structure. This structure also constrains the structure of the anomaly-free subgroup; the derived subgroup $D(G)$ should be included in the anomaly-free subgroup. We study the deta…
We discuss the results of a search for anomaly free Abelian Z_N discrete symmetries that lead to automatic R-parity conservation and prevents dangerous higher-dimensional proton decay operators in simple extensions of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) based on the left-right symmetric group, the Pati-Salam group and SO(10). We require that the superpotential for the models have enough structures to be able to give correct symmetry breaking to MSSM and potentially realistic fermion masses. We find viable models in each of the extensions and for all the cases, ano…
Hierarchical masses of quarks and leptons are addressed by imposing horizontal symmetries. In supersymmetric Standard Models, the same symmetries play a role in suppressing flavor violating processes induced by supersymmetric particles. Combining the idea of spontaneous CP violation to control contributions to electric dipole moments (EDMs), the mass scale of supersymmetric particles can be lowered. We present supersymmetric models with $U(1)$ horizontal symmetries and discuss CP and flavor constraints. Models with two $U(1)$ symmetries are found to give a viable solution to the muon $g-2$ ano…
The anomaly of a discrete symmetry is defined as the Jacobian of the path-integral measure. Assuming that the anomaly at low energies is cancelled by the Green-Schwarz (GS) mechanism at a fundamental scale, we investigate possible Kac-Moody levels for anomalous discrete family symmetries. As the first example, we consider discrete abelian baryon number and lepton number symmetries in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with the see-saw mechanism, and we find that the ordinary unification of gauge couplings is inconsistent with the GS conditions, indicating the possible existence of furth…
We present 48 types of solutions to the anomaly cancellation conditions of local Abelian extensions of the Standard Model (SM) with right-handed singlet chiral fermions. At least two of them acquire effective light Dirac neutrino masses, while the others get heavy masses from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the local Abelian symmetry, forming a dark sector with multi-component and multi-generational fermionic dark matter. The corresponding effective Dirac neutrino mass operator can be realized at tree-level or radiatively by introducing extra scalars, and in some cases after imposing extr…
New $U(1)$ gauge theories involving Standard Model (SM) fermions typically require additional electroweak fermions for anomaly cancellation. We study the non-decoupling properties of these new fermions, called anomalons, in the $Z-Z'-γ$ vertex function, reviewing the connection between the full model and the effective Wess-Zumino operator. We calculate the exotic $Z \to Z' γ$ decay width in $U(1)_{B-L}$ and $U(1)_B$ models, where $B$ and $L$ denote the SM baryon and lepton number symmetries. For $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry, each generation of SM fermions is anomaly free and the exotic $Z \to Z…
We comment on aspects of discrete anomaly conditions focussing particularly on $R$ symmetries. We review the Green-Schwarz cancellation of discrete anomalies, providing a heuristic explanation why, in the heterotic string, only the "model-independent dilaton" transforms non-linearly under discrete symmetries; this argument suggests that, in other theories, multiple fields might play a role in anomaly cancellations, further weakening any anomaly constraints at low energies. We provide examples in open string theories of non-universal discrete anomalies at low energies. We then consider the fact…
We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac masses of neutrinos in Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) without requiring the existence of any additional symmetries. The charged fermions acquire masses through a universal seesaw mechanism due to the presence of additional vector like fermions. The neutrinos acquire a one-loop Dirac mass from the same additional vector like charged leptons without requiring any additional discrete symmetries. The model can also be extended by an additional $Z_2$ symmetry in order to have a scotogenic version of this scenario predicting a stable dark matter c…
A modified Dirac equation with general Lorentz- and CPT-violating operators in the electromagnetic field is studied. Constraints on and possible sensitivities to Lorentz-violating coefficients in the nonminimal sector up to mass-dimension six can be obtained by analyzing Penning-trap results involving anomaly frequencies.
We propose a theory of flavour based on abelian horizontal gauge symmetries and modular invariances. We construct explicit supergravity models where the scale of the horizontal $U(1)$ symmetry breaking is fixed by the Green-Schwarz mechanism for anomaly cancellation. The supersymmetric spectrum is obtained in terms of the $U(1)$ charges which are determined by the Yukawa matrices.
The long-sought "magnetic monopole" appears to be -- not a fermion distinct from the electrons and quarks -- but a charge carried by the known electrons and the quarks themselves. Similarly to the "Z" charge of electroweak theory, however, this magnetic monopole charge only manifests its interactions at sufficiently-high energy, and its interactions may not respect chiral symmetry. Calculated cross-section enhancements from magnetic monopole interactions at s=M_z^2 reduce the observed weak mixing angle for e e-bar --> mu mu-bar decays by about delta sin^2 theta_W = -.0030 relative to v v-bar -…
We consider a two flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model where the Lagrangian includes an interaction term that explicitly breaks the U$_A(1)$ anomaly. At finite temperature, the restoration of chiral and axial symmetries, signaled by the behavior of several observables, is investigated. We compare the effects of two regularizations at finite temperature, one of them, that allows high momentum quarks states, leading to the full recovery of chiral symmetry. From the analysis of the behavior of the topological susceptibility and of the mesonic masses of the axial partners, it is found…
The Standard Model gauge symmetry is extended by $U(1)_{B-L}$ which when spontaneously broken leads to residual $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry made anomaly free by introducing exotic SM singlets with corresponding $U(1)_{B-L}$ charges of $13$, $-14$, and $15$. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry ensures the Dirac nature of neutrinos, simultaneously stabilizing dark matter. Dirac neutrino mass is generated through scotogenic scenario. Dark matter, direct detection, cosmological constraints, and collider constraints analysis is performed. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry predicts the exact abse…
We study possible anomaly-free discrete R-symmetries that avoid the μ-problem and the dangerous D\leq 5 operators considering charge assignments that do not commute with the traditional grand unifying simple groups, such as SU(5) or SO(10), but commute instead with the so-called flipped-SU(5), with or without the operation of the GS mechanism. We find Z_N symmetries with N = 3, 6 in the anomaly-free case or N = 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 in the case of anomaly cancellation through the Green-Schwartz mechanism. Non-unified cases (Z_5) have also been discussed. We also confront the construction of a 4D …
In order that discrete symmetries should not be violated by gravitational effects, it is necessary to gauge them. In this paper we discuss the gauging of $\Z_N$ from the breaking of a high energy $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry, and derive consistency conditions for the resulting discrete symmetry fr om the requirement of anomaly cancellation in the parent symmetry. These results are then applied to a detailed analysis of the possible discrete symmetries forbidding proton decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.
