The baryon axial vector current is computed in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-$N_c$ limit, where $N_c$ is the number of color charges. One-loop nonanalytic corrections of order $m_q \ln m_q$ are comprised in the analysis, with contributions of both intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states, to all orders in the $1/N_c$ expansion of the axial vector current relevant for $N_c=3$. Theoretical expressions are obtained in the limit of vanishing decuplet-octet mass difference only, which allows one to carry out a full comparison with conventional heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory results for three flavors of light quarks and at the physical value $N_c=3$. Both approaches perfectly agree to all orders considered. Furthermore, a numerical analysis via a least-squares fit is performed in order to extract the values of the free parameters of the theory, using the experimental data available. The predictions of formalism are remarkable.
The baryon axial currents are calculated at one-loop order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory by employing both a cutoff and dimensional regularization. Data from the semileptonic baryon decays is used to perform a least-squares fit to the two axial couplings D and F of the effective Lagrangian. Predictions for the momentum dependent axial form factors are made and the two different regularization schemes are compared. We also include the spin-3/2 decuplet in the effective theory.
We prove that the 1/N corrections to the baryon axial current matrix elements are proportional to their lowest order values. This implies that the first correction to axial current coupling constant ratios vanishes, and that the $SU(2N_f)$ spin-flavor symmetry relations are only violated at second order in 1/N.
We compute finite-volume corrections to nucleon matrix elements of the axial-vector current. We show that knowledge of this finite-volume dependence --as well as that of the nucleon mass-- obtained using lattice QCD will allow a clean determination of the chiral-limit values of the nucleon and Delta-resonance axial-vector couplings.
Present evidence on baryon axial--vector couplings is reviewed, the main emphasis being on internal consistency between asymmetry and rate data. A complete account of all {\sl small} terms in the Standard Model description of these latter leads to {\sl both} consistency {\sl and} evidence for breaking of flavour SU(3) in the axial couplings of octet baryons. Talk presented at "5th Int. Sympos. on Meson--Nucleon Physics and the Structure of the Nucleon", Boulder, CO, sept. 1993. To be published in $πN$ Newsletter.
The axial form factor as well as the axial charge of octet baryons are studied in the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) with the quark wave functions predetermined by fitting the theoretical results of the proton charge form factor to experimental data. The theoretical results are found, based on the predetermined quark wave functions, in good agreement with experimental data and lattice values. This may indicate that the electric charge and axial charge distributions of the constituent quarks are the same. The study reveals that the meson cloud plays an important role in the axial charge…
Axial-vector transitions of decuplet to octet baryons are parametrized at low energies guided by a complete and minimal chiral Lagrangian up to next-to-leading order. It is pointed out that beyond the well-known leading-order term, there is only one contribution at next-to-leading order. This contribution is flavor symmetric. Therefore the corresponding low-energy constant can be determined in any strangeness sector. As functions of this low-energy constant, we calculate the decay widths and Dalitz distributions for the decays of decuplet baryons to octet baryons, pions, and photons and for th…
We compute the diagonal isovector axial-vector as well as induced pseudoscalar form factors of nucleon, $Σ$ and $Ξ$ baryons by employing the light-cone QCD sum rules to leading order in QCD and including distribution amplitudes up to twist 6. Extrapolating our sum-rules results to low-momentum transfers, we make a comparison with experimental and lattice-QCD results where we can achieve a nice qualitative and quantitative agreement.
The baryon axial vector current is computed at one-loop order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory in the large-N_c limit, where N_c is the number of colors. Loop graphs with octet and decuplet intermediate states cancel to various orders in N_c as a consequence of the large-N_c spin-flavor symmetry of QCD baryons. These cancellations are explicitly shown for the general case of N_f flavors of light quarks. In particular, a new generic cancellation is identified in the renormalization of the baryon axial vector current at one-loop order. A comparison with conventional heavy baryon chiral…
We have investigated the axial charges of the ground octet baryons within the extended chiral constituent quark model, where all the possible compact five-quark Fock components $qqq(q\bar{q}) (q=u, d, s)$ in the baryons are considered. The transition couplings between the three- and five-quark components in the baryons are assumed to be via the $^{3}P_{0}$ mechanism, which could reproduce the sea asymmetry in proton very well. The numerical results for the flavor-dependent axial charges of the octet baryons are comparable to those predicted by other theoretical approaches. It is shown that the…
We investigate the axial-vector transition constants of the baryon antidecuplet to the octet and decuplet within the framework of the self-consistent SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model. Taking into account rotational 1/N_c and linear m_s corrections and using the symmetry-conserving quantization, we calculate the axial-vector transition constants. It is found that the leading-order contributions are generally almost canceled by the rotational 1/N_c corrections. Thus, the m_s corrections turn out to be essential contributions to the axial-vector constants. The decay width of the Theta^+ to NK tra…
We calculate chiral corrections to the semileptonic vector and axial quark coupling constants using a manifestly Lorentz covariant chiral quark approach up to order O(p4) in the two- and tree-flavor picture. These couplings are then used in the evaluation of the corresponding couplings which govern the semileptonic transitions between octet baryon states. In the calculation of baryon matrix elements we use a general ansatz for the spatial form of the quark wave function, without referring to a specific realization of hadronization and confinement of quarks in baryons. Matching the physical amp…
A review of effective chiral theory of pseudoscalar, vector, and axial vector mesons is presented. 10 coefficients of the ChPT are predicted. A new symmetry breaking-axial-vector symmetry breaking is found and applied to EW theory. The masses of W and Z are dynamically generated and in agreement with data.
The baryon axial vector current is computed at one-loop order in large-N_c baryon chiral perturbation theory, where N_c is the number of colors. Loop graphs with octet and decuplet intermediate states are systematically incorporated into the analysis and the effects of the decuplet-octet mass difference and SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking are accounted for. As expected, large-N_c cancellations between different one-loop graphs are observed as a consequence of the large-N_c spin-flavor symmetry of QCD baryons. Fitting our analytical formulas against experimental data on baryon semileptonic decay…
The derivation of the 1/N_c expansions for the baryon vector and axial-vector currents, in the SU(3) symmetry limit and including perturbative SU(3) breaking, is reviewed. Symmetry breaking effects in the hyperon semileptonic decay form factors are reanalyzed. Fits to experimental data yield corrections to the leading vector and axial-vector form factors consistent with expectations. The values of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements V_{ud} and V_{us} also extracted from the analysis are comparable to the ones recommended by the Particle Data Group.
We develop a systematic chiral perturbation expansion for the calculation of meson-exchange currents in nuclei and apply the formalism to nuclear axial currents. We summarize the principal results of such a calculation to one loop order on nuclear axial-charge transitions which provides a strong support to the conjecture of ``chiral filter phenomenon" in nuclear medium. The use of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory enables us to obtain a remarkably simple result valid next to the leading order in chiral counting. The dominant role of a soft-pion exchange in axial-charge transitions in hea…
We report a theoretical study of the axial Nucleon to Delta(1232) ($N\toΔ$) transition form factors up to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. We adopt a formalism in which the $Δ$ couplings obey the spin-3/2 gauge symmetry and, therefore, decouple the unphysical spin-1/2 fields. We compare the results with phenomenological form factors obtained from neutrino bubble chamber data and in quark models.
The weak vector and axial-vector form factors have been investigated for the semi-leptonic octet baryon decays in the chiral constituent quark model with configuration mixing (\chiCQM_{config}). The effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking and configuration mixing have also been investigated and the results are not only in good agreement with existing experimental data but also show improvement over other phenomenological models.
In this thesis we calculate the baryon axial current within the combined framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion and chiral perturbation theory, where $N_c$ is the number of colors. This calculation shall consider Feynman diagrams to order of one-loop, octet and decuplet intermediaries states. We obtain corrections due to one-loop and perturbative SU(3) symmetry breaking. The first corrections come from Feynman diagrams, then talk about a broken chiral symmetry in the implicit limit $m_q \rightarrow 0$, where $m_q$ is the quark mass and the second corrections are obtained by ignoring isospin breaki…
In this paper, we study axially symmetric solutions with $B=2-5$ in the chiral quark soliton model. In the background of axially symmetric chiral fields, the quark eigenstates and profile functions of the chiral fields are computed self-consistently. The resultant quark bound spectrum are doubly degenerate due to the symmetry of the chiral field. Upon quantization, various observable spectra of the chiral solitons are obtained. Taking account of the Finkelstein-Rubinstein constraints, we show that our results exactly coincide with the physical observations for B=2 and 4 while B=3 and 5 do not.
The large relativistic corrections to the constituent quark current operators improve the predictions for the axial couplings of the baryons, but worsen those for their magnetic moments. The exchange current corrections that are associated with flavor and spin dependent hyperfine interactions between the quarks with a form suggested by pseudoscalar meson exchange can compensate the relativistic corrections to the baryon magnetic moments. This is demonstrated by a calculation of the magnetic moments of the non-strange and strange baryons using wave functions and exchange current operators, whic…
We compute the chiral corrections to octet baryon axial currents through ${\cal O}(p^3)$ in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, including both octet and decuplet baryon intermediate states. We include the latter in a consistent way by using the small scale expansion. We find that, in contrast to the situation at ${\cal O}(p^2)$, there exist no cancellations between octet and decuplet contributions at ${\cal O}(p^3)$. Consequently, the ${\cal O}(p^3)$ corrections spoil the expected scaling behavior of the chiral expansion. We discuss this result in terms of the $1/N_c$ expansion. We also c…
We calculate the axial form factor in the chiral quark soliton (semibosonized Nambu - Jona-Lasinio) model using the semiclassical quantization scheme in the next to leading order in angular velocity. The obtained axial form factor is in a good absolute (without additional scaling) agreement with the experimental data. Both the value at the origin and the $q$-dependence of the form factor as well as the axial m.s.radius are fairly well reproduced.
Recent advances in the development of a chiral linear $σ$-model with (axial-)vector mesons are presented. The model is based on the basic requirements of global chiral symmetry and dilatation invariance. The role of (axial-)vector states turns out to be crucial both in the meson and the baryon sectors. First results at nonzero temperature and density are discussed.
We have performed a theoretical study of the axial Nucleon to Delta(1232) ($N\toΔ$) transition form factors up to one-loop order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory within a formalism in which the unphysical spin-1/2 components of the $Δ$ fields are decoupled.
The Lagrangian of pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons is determined by the explicit global chiral symmetry and hidden local chiral symmetry. There are fourteen interacting terms up to the dimension-four of covariant derivatives rather than the usual eleven interacting terms given in literature from hidden local symmetry approach. There are only two independent parameters. The three new terms are important in phenomenology.
We perform a calculation of the isospin and hypercharge axialvector current propagators to two loops in SU(3)xSU(3) chiral perturbation theory. A large number of order p^6 divergent counterterms are fixed, and complete two-loop renormalized expressions for the pion and eta masses and decay constants are given. The calculated isospin and hypercharge axialvector polarization functions are used as input in new chiral sum rules, valid to second order in the light quark masses. Some phenomenological implications of these sum rules are considered.
We calculate chiral corrections to the octet axial currents through ${\cal O}(p^3)$ using baryon chiral perturbation theory (BCPT). The relativistic BCPT framework allows one to sum an infinite series of recoil corrections at a given order in the chiral expansion. We also include SU(3)-breaking operators occuring at ${\cal O}(p^2)$ not previously considered. We determine the corresponding low-energy constants (LEC's) from hyperon semileptonic decay data using a variety of infrared regularization schemes. We find that the chiral expansion of the axial currents does not display the proper conver…
We discuss the role of the U(1) axial symmetry for the phase structure of QCD at finite temperature. We expect that, above a certain critical temperature, also the U(1) axial symmetry will be restored. We will try to see if this transition has (or has not) anything to do with the usual chiral transition: various possible scenarios are discussed. In particular, we analyse a scenario in which the U(1) axial symmetry is still broken above the chiral transitions. We will show that this scenario can be consistently reproduced using an effective Lagrangian model. A new order parameter is introduced …
The role of chiral transformations in effective theories modeling Quantum Chromo Dynamics is reviewed. In the context of the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model the hidden gauge and massive Yang--Mills approaches to vector mesons are demonstrated to be linked by a special chiral transformation which removes the chiral field from the scalar--pseudoscalar sector. The chirally rotated axial vector meson field ($\tilde A_μ$) transforms homogeneously under flavor rotations and may thus be dropped without violating chiral symmetry. The fermion determinant for static meson field configurations is computed by …
Renormalization of the axial vector currents due to Goldstone loops is studied in a simple extension of Manohar - Georgi chiral quark model which incorporates $U(1)_A$ anomaly effects. The polarized strage quark sea in the polarized nucleon results from different renormalization of the flavor singlet and octet currents and is in reasonable agreement with the experiment.
If a baryon field belongs to a certain linear representation of chiral symmetry of $SU(2) \otimes SU(2)$, the axial coupling constant $g_{A}$ can be determined algebraically from the commutation relations derived from the superconvergence property of pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes. This establishes an algebraic explanation for the values of $g_{A}$ of such as the non-relativistic quark model, large-$N_{c}$ limit and the mirror assignment for two chiral partner nucleons. For the mirror assignment, the axial charges of the positive and negative parity nucleons have opposite signs. Experiment…
In the covariant level-classification scheme of hadrons proposed recently, the existence of "chiral particles", scalar and axial-vector mesons as the partners of the ground-state pseudo-scalar and vector mesons, respectively, were predicted in the D and B meson systems, realizing a linear representation of chiral symmetry. In this work we reanalyze the D* pi mass spectra obtained through the Upsilon (4S) and Z0 decays to show a possibility for the D_1chi.
The new narrow mesons observed recently in the final states Ds+ pi0 and Ds*+ pi0 are pointed out to be naturally assigned as the ground-state scalar and axial-vector chiralons in the c sbar system, which would newly appear in the covariant hadron-classification scheme proposed a few years ago.
The phase transitions characterized by deconfinement and restoration of chiral symmetry as well as the restoration of axial symmetry, at finite temperature, are investigated in the framework of SU(2) Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) models with the U$_A$(1) anomaly. The thermodynamics of the phase transitions, the topological susceptibility, the meson spectrum, and, in particular, the convergence of axial and chiral partners are analyzed, in the framework of the ordinary PNJL model and in its extension, the entangled Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (EPNJL) model. The latter incorporates entangle…
We apply the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) at one loop to analyze the axial form factor of the nucleon. This chiral quark model is based on an effective Lagrangian, where baryons are described by relativistic valence quarks and a perturbative cloud of Goldstone bosons as dictated by chiral symmetry. We apply the formalism to obtain analytical expressions for the axial form factor of the nucleon, which is given in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, strong pion-nucleon form factor) and of only one model parameter (radius of the …
We discuss electro-magnetic and weak axial N-Delta transition amplitudes in the linear sigma-model and the Cloudy-Bag Model as typical representatives of chiral quark models. We show that good qualitative understanding of the transition can be obtained in models which, in addition to the pion cloud, incorporate a fluctuating sigma-field inside the baryon.
The axial-vector form factors and axial-vector constants of the baryon decuplet are investigated within a pion mean-field approach, which is also known as the chiral quark-soliton model. Given an axial-vector current with a specified flavor, there are four different form factors of a decuplet baryon. When we consider the singlet, triplet, and octet axial-vector currents, we have twelve different form factors for each member of the baryon decuplet. We compute all these axial-vector form factors of the baryon decuplet, taking into account the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and effects of flavor …
The effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking and configuration mixing have been investigated for the weak vector and axial-vector form factors in the chiral constituent quark model (χCQM) for the strangeness changing as well as strangeness conserving semi-leptonic octet baryon decays in the nonperturbative regime. The results are in good agreement with existing experimental data and also show improvement over other phenomenological models.
The axial-vector emitting weak hadronic decays of $Ω_c^0$ baryon are investigated. After employing the factorization and the pole model framework to predict their branching ratios, we derive the symmetry breaking effects on axial-vector-meson-baryon couplings and effects of flavor dependence on baryon-baryon weak transition amplitudes and, consequently, on their branching ratios. We found that the W-exchange process contributions dominate $p$-wave meson emitting decays of $Ω_c^0$ baryon.
We investigate the effects of (axial)vector mesons on the chiral phase transition in the framework of an SU(3), (axial)vector meson extended linear sigma model with additional constituent quarks and Polyakov loops. We determine the parameters of the Lagrangian at zero temperature in a hybrid approach, where we treat the mesons at tree-level, while the constituent quarks at 1-loop level. We assume two nonzero scalar condensates and together with the Polyakov-loop variables we determine their temperature dependence according to the 1-loop level field equations.
We reanalyze the D^{*+} pi^- mass spectrum from CLEO II by the VMW method in order to examine the existence of a chiral axial-vector state, which is predicted in a covariant level-classification scheme recently proposed, other than normal orbitally-excited P-wave states in the D meson system. A result of the present analysis seems to suggest that there exists an extra axial-vector meson, in addition to the two normal ones, in a similar mass region.
We investigate the properties of new scalar X_B, X_D and axial-vector X_B*, X_D* mesons, which are recently predicted, in the covariant meson-classification scheme, to exist as the partners of ground-state pseudoscalar B, D and vector B*, D* mesons, respectively, realizing a linear representation of chiral symmetry for the light quark component in heavy-light-quark meson system. The mass splittings between the respective chiral partners are shown to be equal, and the decay widths of one pion emission of X_B, X_D, X_B* and X_D* become to have a common value, due to chiral and heavy quark symmet…
We present a study of axial charges of baryon ground and resonant states with relativistic constituent quark models. In particular, the axial charges of octet and decuplet $N$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, $Δ$, $Σ^*$, and $Ξ^*$ baryons are considered. The theoretical predictions are compared to existing experimental data and results from other approaches, notably from lattice quantum chromodynamics and chiral perturbation theory. The relevance of axial charges with regard to $π$-dressing and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking is discussed.
The octet-baryon axial-vector charges and the g1/f1 ratios measured in the semileptonic hyperon decays are studied up to O(p^3) using the covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit decuplet contributions. We clarify the role of different low-energy constants and find a good convergence for the chiral expansion of the axial-vector charges of the baryon octet, g1(0), with O(p^3) corrections typically around 20% of the leading ones. This is a consequence of strong cancellations between different next-to-leading order terms. We show that considering only non-analytic terms is not en…
We investigate the chiral structure of local vector and axial-vector tetraquark currents, and study their chiral transformation properties. We consider the charge-conjugation parity and classify all the isovector vector and axial-vector local tetraquark currents of quantum numbers I(G)J(PC)=1(-)1(-+), I(G)J(PC)=1(+)1(--), I(G)J(PC)=1(-)1(++) and I(G)J(PC)=1(+)1(+-). We find that there is a one to one correspondence among them. Using these currents, we perform QCD sum rule analyses. Our results suggest that there is a missing b1 state having I(G)J(PC)=1(+)1(+-) and a mass around 1.47-1.66 GeV.
We consider a two flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model where the Lagrangian includes an interaction term that explicitly breaks the U$_A(1)$ anomaly. At finite temperature, the restoration of chiral and axial symmetries, signaled by the behavior of several observables, is investigated. We compare the effects of two regularizations at finite temperature, one of them, that allows high momentum quarks states, leading to the full recovery of chiral symmetry. From the analysis of the behavior of the topological susceptibility and of the mesonic masses of the axial partners, it is found…
We have used the light-cone formulation of Chiral-Quark Soliton Model to investigate the vector and axial content of octet, decuplet and the hypothetical antidecuplet in the flavor SU(3) symmetry limit. We have extended previous works by computing the 7Q contribution to vector and axial charges for the octet and antidecuplet but stayed at the 5Q sector for the decuplet where the full computation needs much more time. As expected the 7Q component has a weaker impact on the quantities but still changes them by a few percent. We give also a detailed decomposition of those charges into flavor, val…
We discuss the role of the U(1) axial symmetry for the phase structure of QCD at finite temperature. We expect that, above a certain critical temperature, also the U(1) axial symmetry will be (effectively) restored. We will try to see if this transition has (or has not) anything to do with the usual chiral transition: various possible scenarios are discussed. In particular, supported by recent lattice results, we analyse a scenario in which a U(1)-breaking condensate survives across the chiral transition. This scenario can be consistently reproduced using an effective Lagrangian model. The eff…
Basic features of nonstrange vector and axial vector mesons are analyzed in the framework of a chiral quark model that includes nonlocal four fermion couplings. Unknown model parameters are determined from some input values of masses and decay constants, while nonlocal form factors are taken from a fit to lattice QCD results for effective quark propagators. Numerical results show a good agreement with the observed meson phenomenology.
By describing within the chiral unitary approach the s-wave interaction of the vector meson nonet with the octet of pseudoscalar Goldstone Bosons, we find that the main component of the axial vector mesons b_1(1235), h_1(1170), h_1(1380), a_1(1260), f_1(1285) and the two states associated to the K_1(1270) does not follow the QCD dependence on the number of colors for ordinary qqbar mesons.
We investigate three different axial-vector form factors of the nucleon, $G_A^{0}$, $G_A^3$, $G_A^8$, within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, emphasizing their strangeness content. We take into account the rotational $1/N_c$ and linear strange quark ($m_s$) contributions using the symmetry-conserving SU(3) quantization and assuming isospin symmetry. The strange axial-vector form factor is also obtained and they all are discussed in the context of the parity-violating scattering of polarized electrons off the nucleon and its relevance to the strange vector form factors.
We show that three-quark axial currents as required by broken SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry reduce the quark spin contribution to proton spin from $Σ_p = 1$ (one-quark axial current value) to $Σ_p = 0.41(12)$ consistent with the empirical value $Σ_{p, exp} = 0.33(08)$. In the case of the $Δ^+(1232)$ baryon, we find that three-quark axial currents increase the one-quark axial current value $Σ_{Δ^+} = 3$ to $Σ_{Δ^+} = 3.87(22)$. We also calculate the quark orbital angular momenta $L_u$ and $L_d$ in the proton and $Δ^+$ and interpret our results in terms of the prolate and oblate geometric shapes of…
We present two-loop calculations on the axial-vector form factors $F_A$ of semileptonic radiative kaon and pion decays in chiral perturbation theory. The relevant dimension-6 terms of the lagrangian are evaluated from the resonance contribution and the results of the irreducible two-loop graphs of the sunset topology are given in detail. We also explicitly show that the divergent parts in $F_A$ are cancelled exactly as required.
The Chiral String-Soliton Model is a joining of the two notions about the light chiral baryons: the chiral soliton models (like the Skyrme model) and the Quark-Gluon String models. The ChSS model is based on the Effective Chiral Lagrangian which was proposed in [arXiv:hep-ph/0306216]. We have studied the physical properties of the light chiral baryon within the framework of this ChSS model.
We calculate the light quark condensate, the strange quark condensate, the pion condensate, and the axial condensate in three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) in the presence of an isospin chemical potential at next-to-leading order at zero temperature. It is shown that the three-flavor $χ$PT effective potential and condensates can be mapped onto two-flavor $χ$PT ones by integrating out mesons with strange quark content (kaons and eta), with renormalized couplings. We compare the results for the light quark and pion condensates at finite pseudoscalar source with ($2+1$)-flavor lattice…
We discuss the role of the U(1) axial symmetry for the phase structure of QCD at finite temperature. In particular, supported by recent lattice results, we analyse a scenario in which a U(1)-breaking condensate survives across the chiral transition. This scenario can be consistently reproduced using an effective Lagrangian model. The effects of the U(1) chiral condensate on the slope of the topological susceptibility in the full theory with quarks are studied. Further information on the new U(1) chiral order parameter is derived from the study (at zero temperature) of the radiative decays of t…
