This paper introduces a novel frequency-shift chirp spread spectrum (FSCSS) system with index modulation (IM). By using combinations of orthogonal chirp signals for message representation, the proposed FSCSS-IM system is very flexible to design and can achieve much higher data rates than the conventional FSCSS system under the same bandwidth. The paper presents optimal detection algorithms, both coherently and non-coherently, for the proposed FSCSS-IM system. Furthermore, a low-complexity non-coherent detection algorithm is also developed to reduce the computational complexity of the receiver, which is shown to achieve near-optimal performance. Results are presented to demonstrate that the proposed system, while enabling much higher data rates, enjoys similar bit-error performance as that of the conventional FSCSS system.
In this paper, we investigate multi user chirp spread spectrum with noncoherent detection as a continuation of our work on coherent detection in [1]. We derive the analytical bit error ratio (BER) expression for binary chirp spread spectrum (BCSS) in the presence of multiple access interference (MAI) caused by correlation with other user signals because of either asynchronism or Doppler shifts, or both, and validate with simulations. To achieve this we analyze the signal cross correlations, and compare traditional linear chirps with our recently-proposed nonlinear chirps introduced in [1] and …
In this study, we propose a framework for chirp-based communications by exploiting discrete Fourier transform-spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM). We show that a well-designed frequency-domain spectral shaping (FDSS) filter for DFT-s-OFDM can convert its single-carrier nature to a linear combination of chirps circularly translated in the time domain. Also, by exploiting the properties of the Fourier series and Bessel function of the first kind, we analytically obtain the FDSS filter for an arbitrary chirp. We theoretically show that the chirps with low ripples in the…
In this study, we propose index modulation (IM) with circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs) (CSC-IM) for dual-function radar and communication (DFRC) systems. The proposed scheme encodes the information bits with the CSC indices and the phase-shift keying (PSK) symbols. It allows the receiver to exploit the frequency selectivity naturally in fading channels by combining IM and wideband CSCs. It also leverages the fact that a CSC is a constant-envelope signal to achieve a controllable peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR). For radar functionality, CSC-IM maintains the good autocorrelation (AC) pr…

In this study, we analyze index modulation (IM) based on circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs) for dual-function radar & communication (DFRC) systems. We develop a maximum likelihood (ML) range estimator that considers multiple scatters. To improve the correlation properties of the transmitted waveform and estimation accuracy, we propose index separation (IS) which separates the CSCs apart in time. We theoretically show that the separation can be large under certain conditions without losing the spectral efficiency (SE). Our numerical results show that the IS combined ML and linear minimum mean squ…
This paper proposes a novel spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulation (SS-SIM) scheme, which is integrated to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) framework to enhance the diversity over the conventional IM schemes. Particularly, the resulting scheme, called SS-SIMOFDM, jointly employs both spread spectrum and sub-carrier index modulations to form a precoding vector which is then used to spread an M-ary complex symbol across all active sub-carriers. As a result, the proposed scheme enables a novel transmission of three signal domains: SS and sub-carrier indices, and a singl…
This paper proposes a new coded modulation scheme for reliable transmission of short data packets at very low signal-to-noise ratio, combining cyclic code shift keying modulation and non-binary polar coding. We consider non-binary polar codes defined over Galois fields, and propose a new design methodology, aimed at optimizing the choice of the kernel coefficients. Numerical results show that the system performance is close to the achievable limits in the finite blocklength regime.
In this paper, we propose a novel integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmission framework based on the spatially-spread orthogonal time frequency space (SS-OTFS) modulation by considering the fact that communication channel strengths cannot be directly obtained from radar sensing. We first propose the concept of SS-OTFS modulation, where the key novelty is the angular domain discretization enabled by the spatial-spreading/de-spreading. This discretization gives rise to simple and insightful effective models for both radar sensing and communication, which result in simplified designs…
A novel OFDM-based waveform with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and high robustness against phase noise (PN) is presented. It follows the discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) signal model. 3MSK, is inspired by continuous-phase frequency shift keying (FSK), but it uses three frequencies in the baseband model -- specifically, 0 and $\pm f_{symbol}/4$, where $f_{symbol}$ is the symbol rate -- which effectively constrains the phase transitions between consecutive symbols to 0 and $\pm π/2$ rad. Motivated by the phase controlled model of …
