We consider the probe of astrophysical signals through radio interferometers with small field of view and baselines with non-negligible and constant component in the pointing direction. In this context, the visibilities measured essentially identify with a noisy and incomplete Fourier coverage of the product of the planar signals with a linear chirp modulation. In light of the recent theory of compressed sensing and in the perspective of defining the best possible imaging techniques for sparse signals, we analyze the related spread spectrum phenomenon and suggest its universality relative to the sparsity dictionary. Our results rely both on theoretical considerations related to the mutual coherence between the sparsity and sensing dictionaries, as well as on numerical simulations.
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the applicability and benefits of baseline dependent averaging (BDA) in modern radio interferometers and in particular the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We demonstrate that BDA does not affect the information content of the data other than a well-defined decorrelation loss for which closed form expressions are readily available. We verify these theoretical findings using simulations. We therefore conclude that BDA can be used reliably in modern radio interferometry allowing a reduction of visibility data volume (and hence processing costs for handling…
Methods currently in use for locating and characterising sources in radio interferometry maps are designed for processing images, and require interferometric maps to be preprocessed so as to resemble conventional images. We demonstrate a Bayesian code - BaSC - that takes into account the interferometric visibility data despite working with more computationally manageable image domain data products. This method is better able to discriminate nearby sources than the commonly used SExtractor, and has potential even in more complicated cases. We also demonstrate the correctness of the Bayesian res…
Mitigation of radio frequency interference (RFI) is essential to deliver science-ready radio interferometric data to astronomers. In this paper, using dual polarized radio interferometers, we propose to use the polarization information of post-correlation interference signals to detect and mitigate them. We use the directional statistics of the polarized signals as the detection criteria and formulate a distributed, wideband spectrum sensing problem. Using consensus optimization, we solve this in an online manner, working with mini-batches of data. We present extensive results based on simulat…

Energy consumption and hardware cost of signal digitization together with the management of the resulting data volume form serious issues for high-rate measurement systems with multiple sensors. Switching to binary sensing front-ends results in a resource-efficient layout but is commonly associated with significant distortion due to the nonlinear signal acquisition. In particular, for applications that require to solve high-resolution processing tasks under extreme conditions, it is a widely held belief that low-complexity $1$-bit analog-to-digital conversion leads to unacceptable performance …
Xova is a software package that implements baseline-dependent time and channel averaging on Measurement Set data. The uv-samples along a baseline track are aggregated into a bin until a specified decorrelation tolerance is exceeded. The degree of decorrelation in the bin correspondingly determines the amount of channel and timeslot averaging that is suitable for samples in the bin. This necessarily implies that the number of channels and timeslots varies per bin and the output data loses the rectilinear input shape of the input data.
In radio interferometry imaging, the gridding procedure of convolving visibilities with a chosen gridding function is necessary to transform visibility values into uniformly sampled grid points. We propose here a parameterised family of "least-misfit gridding functions" which minimise an upper bound on the difference between the DFT and FFT dirty images for a given gridding support width and image cropping ratio. When compared with the widely used spheroidal function with similar parameters, these provide more than 100 times better alias suppression and RMS misfit reduction over the usable dir…
Low-frequency radio observatories are reaching unprecedented levels of sensitivity in an effort to detect the 21 cm signal from the Cosmic Dawn. High precision is needed because the expected signal is overwhelmed by foreground contamination, largely from so-called diffuse emission -- a non-localized glow comprising Galactic synchrotron emission and radio galaxies. The impact of this diffuse emission on observations may be better understood through detailed simulations, which evaluate the Radio Interferometry Measurement Equation (RIME) for a given instrument and sky model. Evaluating the RIME …
Planetary Radio Interferometry and Doppler Experiment (PRIDE) Technique: a Test Case of the Mars Express Phobos Fly-by. 2. Doppler tracking: Formulation of observed and computed values, and noise budget
In this lecture, we describe a number of advanced gain calibration techniques. In particular, self-calibration is an important tool in interferometric imaging at all wavelengths. It allows the observer to determine and remove residual phase and amplitude errors that remain in the data after normal calibration while simultaneously producing a more accurate and more sensitive image of the target source. We describe the basic technique of self-calibration and attempt to dispel some common misconceptions. We proceed to give a range of useful tips, and provide continuum, spectral line, and mosaic s…

We developed a radio interferometric technique for the observation of extensive air showers initiated by cosmic particles. In this proof-of-principle study we show that properties of extensive air showers can be derived with high accuracy in a straightforward manner. When time synchronisation below $\sim$1 ns between different receivers can be achieved, direction reconstruction resolution of $< 0.2^\circ$ and resolution on the depth of shower maximum of $<10$ g/cm$^2$ are obtained over the full parameter range studied, with even higher accuracy for inclined incoming directions. In addition, by…
Traditional radio interferometric correlators produce regular-gridded samples of the true $uv$-distribution by averaging the signal over constant, discrete time-frequency intervals. This regular sampling and averaging then translate to be irregular-gridded samples in the $uv$-space, and results in a baseline-length-dependent loss of amplitude and phase coherence, which is dependent on the distance from the image phase centre. The effect is often referred to as "decorrelation" in the $uv$-space, which is equivalent in the source domain to "smearing". This work discusses and implements a regular…
The rapid development of new generation radio interferometers such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) has opened up unprecedented opportunities for astronomical research. However, anthropogenic Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from communication technologies and other human activities severely affects the fidelity of observational data. It also significantly reduces the sensitivity of the telescopes. We proposed a robust Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to identify RFI based on machine learning methods. We overlaid RFI on the simulation data of SKA1-LOW to construct three visibility…
Radio interferometers do not measure the sky brightness distribution directly but rather a modified Fourier transform of it. Imaging algorithms, thus, need a computational representation of the linear measurement operator and its adjoint, irrespective of the specific chosen imaging algorithm. In this paper, we present a C++ implementation of the radio interferometric measurement operator for wide-field measurements which is based on "improved $w$-stacking". It can provide high accuracy (down to $\approx 10^{-12}$), is based on a new gridding kernel which allows smaller kernel support for given…
CLEAN, the commonly employed imaging algorithm in radio interferometry, suffers from a number of shortcomings: in its basic version it does not have the concept of diffuse flux, and the common practice of convolving the CLEAN components with the CLEAN beam erases the potential for super-resolution; it does not output uncertainty information; it produces images with unphysical negative flux regions; and its results are highly dependent on the so-called weighting scheme as well as on any human choice of CLEAN masks to guiding the imaging. Here, we present the Bayesian imaging algorithm resolve w…
Calibration artefacts in radio interferometry. I. Ghost sources in WSRT data

We propose a new approach within the versatile framework of convex optimization to solve the radio-interferometric wideband imaging problem. Our approach, dubbed HyperSARA, solves a sequence of weighted nuclear norm and l21 minimization problems promoting low rankness and joint average sparsity of the wideband model cube. On the one hand, enforcing low rankness enhances the overall resolution of the reconstructed model cube by exploiting the correlation between the different channels. On the other hand, promoting joint average sparsity improves the overall sensitivity by rejecting artefacts pr…
New generation of radio interferometers are envisaged to produce high quality, high dynamic range Stokes images of the observed sky from the corresponding under-sampled Fourier domain measurements. In practice, these measurements are contaminated by the instrumental and atmospheric effects that are well represented by Jones matrices, and are most often varying with observation direction and time. These effects, usually unknown, act as a limiting factor in achieving the required imaging performance and thus, their calibration is crucial. To address this issue, we develop a global algorithm, nam…
Modern interferometers routinely provide radio-astronomical images down to subarcsecond resolution. However, interferometers filter out spatial scales larger than those sampled by the shortest baselines, which affects the measurement of both spatial and spectral features. Complementary single-dish data are vital for recovering the true flux distribution of spatially resolved astronomical sources with such extended emission. In this work, we provide an overview of the prominent available methods to combine single-dish and interferometric observations. We test each of these methods in the framew…
