We formalize the problem of dissipative quantum encoding, and explore the advantages of using Markovian evolution to prepare a quantum code in the desired logical space, with emphasis on discrete-time dynamics and the possibility of exact finite-time convergence. In particular, we investigate robustness of the encoding dynamics and their ability to tolerate initialization errors, thanks to the existence of non-trivial basins of attraction. As a key application, we show that for stabilizer quantum codes on qubits, a finite-time dissipative encoder may always be constructed, by using at most a number of quantum maps determined by the number of stabilizer generators. We find that even in situations where the target code lacks gauge degrees of freedom in its subsystem form, dissipative encoders afford nontrivial robustness against initialization errors, thus overcoming a limitation of purely unitary encoding procedures. Our general results are illustrated in a number of relevant examples, including Kitaev's toric code.
Quantum metrology allows us to attain a measurement precision that surpasses the classically achievable limit by using quantum characters. The metrology precision is raised from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL) by using entanglement. However, it was reported that the HL returns to the SQL in the presence of local dephasing environments under the long encoding-time condition. We evaluate here the exact impacts of local dissipative environments on quantum metrology, based on the Ramsey interferometer. It is found that the HL is asymptotically recovered under the long…
Stabilization of encoded logical qubits using quantum error correction is key to the realization of reliable quantum computers. While qubit codes require many physical systems to be controlled, oscillator codes offer the possibility to perform error correction on a single physical entity. One powerful encoding for oscillators is the grid state or GKP encoding, which allows small displacement errors to be corrected. Here we introduce and implement a dissipative map designed for physically realistic finite GKP codes which performs quantum error correction of a logical qubit implemented in the mo…
Quantum metrology utilizes quantum effects to reach higher precision measurements of physical quantities compared with their classical counterparts. However the ubiquitous decoherence obstructs its application. Recently, non-Markovian effects are shown to be effective in performing quantum optical metrology under locally dissipative environments\cite{PhysRevLett.123.040402}. However, the mechanism is still rather hazy. Here, we uncover the reason why forming a bound state can protect the quantumness against a dissipative ambient via the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent states. …
We provide a theoretical framework for encoding arbitrary logical states of a quantum bit (qubit) into a continuous-variable quantum mode through quantum walks. Starting with a squeezed-vacuum state of the quantum mode, we show that quantum walks of the state in phase space can generate output states that are variants of codeword states originally put forward by Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill (GKP) [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 64}, 012310 (2001)]. In particular, with a coin-toss transformation that projects the quantum coin onto the diagonal coin-state, we show that the resulting {\em dissipative} quan…
Quantum metrology pursues high-precision measurements of physical quantities by using quantum resources. However, the decoherence generally hinders its performance. Previous work found that the metrological error tends to diverge in the long-encoding-time regime due to the Born-Markovian approximate decoherence, which is called the no-go theorem of noisy quantum metrology. Here we propose a Gaussian quantum metrology scheme using bimodal quantized optical fields as the quantum probe. It achieves the precision of a sub-Heisenberg limit in the ideal case. However, the Markovian decoherence cause…
In this work, we investigate quantum Fisher information(QFI) and quantum coherence(QC) of an atom in dissipative cavity. In zero temperature reservior and with one excitation number, we obtain the analytical solutions of QFI and QC as well as their relationship for Ohmic and Lorentzian reservoir, respectively. The results show that both of the atom-cavity coupling and the cavity-reservoir coupling can effectively protect QFI and QC. Especially, QFI and QC will tend to their stable values when the atom-cavity coupling or the cavity-reservoir coupling is larger than a certain value. QC can augme…
Pure quantum states can be stabilized in open quantum systems subject to external driving forces and dissipation by environmental modes. We show that driven dissipative (DD) Majorana devices offer key advantages for stabilizing degenerate state manifolds (`dark spaces') and for manipulating states in dark spaces, both with respect to native (non-DD) Majorana devices and to DD platforms with topologically trivial building blocks. For two tunnel-coupled Majorana boxes, using otherwise only standard hardware elements (e.g., a noisy electromagnetic environment and quantum dots with driven tunnel l…
Having a broad range of methods available for implementing unitary operations is crucial for quantum information tasks. We study a dissipative process commonly used to describe dissipatively coupled systems and show that the process can lead to pure unitary dynamics on one part of a bipartite system, provided that the process is strong enough. If suitably engineered, the process allows to implement generic unitary operations. In fact, we show within the framework of quantum control theory that the dissipative process can turn the system of interest into a system capable of universal quantum in…
We study quantum conditional entropy production, which quantifies the irreversibility of system-environment evolution from the perspective of a third system, called the reference. The reference is initially correlated with the system. We show that the quantum unconditional entropy production with respect to the system is less than the conditional entropy production with respect to the reference, where the latter includes a reference-induced dissipative information. The dissipative information pinpoints the distributive correlation established between the environment and the reference, even tho…
We study quantum information properties of a seven-level system realized by a particle in an one-dimensional square-well trap. Features of encodings of seven-level systems in a form of three-qubit or qubit-qutrit systems are discussed. We use the three-qubit encoding of the system in order to investigate subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for the thermal state of the particle. The qubit-qutrit encoding is employed to suggest a single qudit algorithm for calculation of parity of a bit string. Obtained results indicate on the potential resource of multilevel systems for realizatio…
Encoding and decoding quantum information in a multipartite quantum system are indispensable for quantum error correction and also play crucial roles in multiparty tasks in distributed quantum information processing such as quantum secret sharing. To quantitatively characterize nonlocal properties of multipartite quantum transformations for encoding and decoding, we analyze entanglement costs of encoding and decoding quantum information in a multipartite quantum system distributed among spatially separated parties connected by a network. This analysis generalizes previous studies of entangleme…
We introduce and analyse the problem of encoding classical information into different resources of a quantum state. More precisely, we consider a general class of communication scenarios characterised by encoding operations that commute with a unique resource destroying map and leave free states invariant. Our motivating example is given by encoding information into coherences of a quantum system with respect to a fixed basis (with unitaries diagonal in that basis as encodings and the decoherence channel as a resource destroying map), but the generality of the framework allows us to explore ap…
We study the temporal growth of the von Neumann entropy for dissipative quantum walks on networks. By using a phenomenological quantum master equation, the quantum stochastic walk (QSW), we are able to parametrically scan the crossover from purely coherent quantum walks to purely diffusive random walks. In the latter limit the entropy shows a logarithmic growth, which is proportional to the information dimension of the random walk on the network. Here we present results for the von Neumann entropy based on the reduced density operator of the QSW. It shows a similar logarithmic growth for a wid…
In quantum communications, quantum states are employed for the transmission of information between remote parties. This usually requires sharing knowledge of the measurement bases through a classical public channel in the sifting phase of the protocol. Here, we demonstrate a quantum communication scheme where the information on the bases is shared "non-classically", by encoding this information in the same photons used for carrying the data. This enhanced capability is achieved by exploiting the localization of the photonic wave function, observed when the photons are prepared and measured in …
By using the non-Markovian master equation, we investigate the effect of the cavity and the environment on the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of an atom qubit system in a dissipation cavity. We obtain the formulae of QFI for two different initial states and analyze the effect of the atom-cavity coupling and the cavity-reservoir coupling on the QFI. The results show that the dynamic behavior of the QFI is obviously dependent on the initial atomic states, the atom-cavity coupling and the cavity-reservoir coupling. The stronger the atom-cavity coupling, the quicker the QFI oscillates and the sl…

Quantum Darwinism explains the emergence of a classical description of objects in terms of the creation of many redundant registers in an environment containing their classical information. This amplification phenomenon, where only classical information reaches the macroscopic observer and through which different observers can agree on the objective existence of such object, has been revived lately for several types of situations, successfully explaining classicality. We explore quantum Darwinism in the setting of an environment made of two level systems which are initially prepared in the gro…

How can relevant information be extracted from a quantum process? In many situations, only some part of the total information content produced by an information source is useful. Can one then find an efficient encoding, in the sense of retaining the largest fraction of relevant information? This paper offers one possible solution by giving a generalization of a classical method designed to retain as much relevant information as possible in a lossy data compression. A key feature of the method is to introduce a second information source to define relevance. We quantify the advantage a quantum e…
It is by now well understood that quantum dissipative processes can be harnessed and turned into a resource for quantum-information processing tasks. In this paper we demonstrate yet another way in which this is true by providing a dissipation-assisted protocol for the simulation of general Markovian dynamics. More precisely, we show how a suitable coherent coupling of a quantum system to a set of Markovian dissipating qubits allows one to enact an effective Liouvillian generator of any Lindbladian form. This effective dynamical generator arises from high-order virtual-dissipative processes an…
We present a protocol for encoding $N$ real numbers stored in $N$ memory registers into the amplitudes of the quantum superposition that describes the state of $\log_2N$ qubits. This task is one of the main steps in quantum machine learning algorithms applied to classical data. The protocol combines partial CNOT gate rotations with probabilistic projection onto the desired state. The number of additional ancilla qubits used during the implementation of the protocol, as well as the number of quantum gates, scale linearly with the number of qubits in the processing register and hence logarithmic…

In this paper, we have investigated the preservation of quantum Fisher information of a single-qubit system coupled to a common zero temperature reservoir through the addition of noninteracting qubits. The results show that, the QFI is completely protected in both Markovian and non-Markovian regimes by increasing the number of additional qubits. Besides, the phenomena of QFI display monotonic decay or non-monotonic with revival oscillations depending on the number of additional qubits in a common dissipative reservoir. Moreover, we extend this model to investigate the effect of additional qubi…
