Within the framework of the flux formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) we employ a generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansatz and discuss the classification of the twists that in the presence of the strong constraint give rise to constant generalised fluxes interpreted as gaugings. We analyse the various possibilities of turning on the fluxes $H_{ijk}, F_{ij}{}^k, Q_i{}^{jk}$ and $R^{ijk}$, and the solutions for the twists allowed in each case. While we do not impose the DFT (or equivalently supergravity) equations of motion, our results provide solution-generating techniques in supergravity when applied to a background that does solve the DFT equations. At the same time, our results give rise also to canonical transformations of 2-dimensional $σ$-models, a fact which is interesting especially because these are integrability-preserving transformations on the worldsheet. Both the solution-generating techniques of supergravity and the canonical transformations of 2-dimensional $σ$-models arise as maps that leave the generalised fluxes of DFT and their flat derivatives invariant. These maps include the known abelian/non-abelian/Poisson-Lie T-duality transformations, Yang-Baxter deformations, as well as novel generalisations of them.
The non-perturbative canonical quantization of the N=1 supergravity with the non-zero cosmological constant is studied using the Ashtekar formalism. A semi-classical wave function is obtained and it has the form of the exponential of the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the Chern-Simons functional. The N=1 supergravity in the Robertson-Walker universe is also examined and some analytic solutions are obtained. (We omit all graphs in the following LaTex file.)
We study monotonicity and other properties of the canonical c-function (defined through the correlator of the energy-momentum tensor) in some holographic duals of 4-d quantum field theories. The canonical c-function and its derivatives are related to the 5-d Green's function of the dual supergravity theory. While positivity of the canonical c-function is obvious, we have not found a general proof of its monotonicity, even though c is monotonic in the few explicit examples we examine in this paper.
A set of new canonical variables for $d=11$ supergravity is proposed which renders the supersymmetry variations and the supersymmetry constraint polynomial. The construction is based on the $SO(1,2)\times SO(16)$ invariant reformulation of $d=11$ supergravity given in previous work, and has some similarities with Ashtekar's reformulation of Einstein's theory. The new bosonic variables fuse the gravitational degrees of freedom with those of the three-index photon $A_{MNP}$ in accordance with the hidden symmetries of the dimensionally reduced theory. Although $E_8$ is not a symmetry of the theor…
The technique of generating new solutions to 4D gravity/matter systems by dimensional reduction to a sigma-model is extended to supersymmetric configurations of supergravity. The conditions required for the preservation of supersymmetry under isometry transformations in the sigma-model target space are found. Some examples illustrating the technique are given.
Starting from the known representation of the Kac-Moody algebra in terms of the coordinates and momenta, we extend it to the representation of the super Kac-Moody and super Virasoro algebras. Then we use general canonical method to construct an action invariant under local gauge symmetries, where components of the super energy-momentum tensor $L_\pm$ and $G_\pm$ play the role of the diffeomorphisms and supersymmetries generators respectively. We obtain covariant extension of WZNW theory with respect to local supersymmetry as well as explicit expressions for gauge transformations.
The canonical formulation of d=2, N=16 supergravity is presented. We work out the supersymmetry generators (including all higher order spinor terms) and the N=16 superconformal constraint algebra. We then describe the construction of the conserved non-local charges associated with the affine E_9 symmetry of the classical equations of motion. These charges are shown to commute weakly with the supersymmetry constraints, and hence with all other constraints. Under commutation, they close into a quadratic algebra of Yangian type, which is formally the same as that of the bosonic theory. The Lie-Po…
A canonical formulation of the N=1 supergravity theory containing the topological Nieh-Yan term in its Lagrangian density is developed. The constraints are analysed without choosing any gauge. In the time gauge, the theory is shown to be described in terms of real SU(2) variables.
We review the underlying algebraic structures of supergravity theories with symmetric scalar manifolds in five and four dimensions, orbits of their extremal black hole solutions and the spectrum generating extensions of their U-duality groups. For 5D, N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories (MESGT) defined by Euclidean Jordan algebras, J, the spectrum generating symmetry groups are the conformal groups Conf(J) of J which are isomorphic to their U-duality groups in four dimensions. Similarly, the spectrum generating symmetry groups of 4D, N=2 MESGTs are the quasiconformal groups QConf(J) ass…
Using a recently developed off-shell formulation for general 4D N=2 supergravity-matter systems, we propose a construction to generate higher derivative couplings. We address here mainly the interactions of tensor and vector multiplets, but the construction is quite general. For a certain subclass of terms, the action is naturally written as an integral over 3/4 of the Grassmann coordinates of superspace.
We discuss the canonical treatment and quantization of matter coupled supergravity in three dimensions, with special emphasis on $N=2$ supergravity. We then analyze the quantum constraint algebra; certain operator ordering ambiguities are found to be absent due to local supersymmetry. We show that the supersymmetry constraints can be partially solved by a functional analog of the method of characteristics. We also consider extensions of Wilson loop integrals of the type previously found in ordinary gravity, but now with connections involving the bosonic and fermionic matter fields in addition …
Dirac's approach to the canonical quantization of constrained systems is applied to $N = 1$ supergravity, with or without gauged supermatter. Two alternative types of boundary condition applicable to quantum field theory or quantum gravity are contrasted. The first is the `coordinate' boundary condition as used in quantum cosmology; the second type is scattering boundary conditions, as used in Feynman diagrams, applicable to asymptotically flat space-time. The first yields a differential-equation form of the theory, dual to the integral version appropriate to the second. Here, the first (Dirac…
It is shown that the one-loop coefficients of on-shell operators of standard supergravity with canonical gauge kinetic energy can be regulated by the introduction of Pauli-Villars chiral and abelian gauge multiplets, subject to a condition on the matter representations of the gauge group. Aspects of the anomaly structure of these theories under global nonlinear symmetries and an anomalous gauge symmetry are discussed.
We focus on N = 3 chiral supergravity (SUGRA) which is the lowest N theory involving a spin-1/2 field, and derive the Ashtekar's canonical formulation of N = 3 SUGRA starting with the chiral Lagrangian constructed by closely following the standard SUGRA. The polynomiality of constraints in terms of canonical variables and the graded algebraic structure of constraints are discussed in the canonical formulation. In particular, we show the polynomiality of the {\it rescaled} right- and left-handed SUSY constraints by a nonpolynomial factor. And also we show the graded algebraic structure of Osp(3…
We consider the geodesic motion on the symmetric moduli spaces that arise after timelike and spacelike reductions of supergravity theories. The geodesics correspond to timelike respectively spacelike $p$-brane solutions when they are lifted over a $p$-dimensional flat space. In particular, we consider the problem of constructing \emph{the minimal generating solution}: A geodesic with the minimal number of free parameters such that all other geodesics are generated through isometries. We give an intrinsic characterization of this solution in a wide class of orbits for various supergravities in …
Following a recent proposal, we employ the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the jet quenching parameter for N=4 Yang-Mills theory at nonzero R-charge densities. Using as dual supergravity backgrounds non-extremal rotating branes, we find that the presence of the R-charges generically enhances the jet quenching phenomenon. However, at fixed temperature, this enhancement might or might not be a monotonically increasing function of the R-charge density and depends on the number of independent angular momenta describing the solution. We perform our analysis for the canonical as well as for the gr…
It is shown that the N=2 superconformal transformations are restricted N=1 supergauge transformations of a supergauge theory with Osp(2,2) as a gauge group. Based on this result, a canonical derivation of the Osp(2,2) current algebra in the superchiral gauge formulation of N=2 supergravity is presented.
We study n-point tree amplitudes of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and N=8 supergravity for general configurations of external particles of the two theories. We construct generating functions for n-point MHV and NMHV amplitudes with general external states. Amplitudes derived from them obey SUSY Ward identities, and the generating functions characterize and count amplitudes in the MHV and NMHV sectors. The MHV generating function provides an efficient way to perform the intermediate state helicity sums required to obtain loop amplitudes from trees. The NMHV generating functions rely on the MHV-ve…
We investigate the effect of non-canonical kinetic terms on inflation in supergravity. We find that the biggest impact of such higher-derivative kinetic terms is due to the corrections to the potential that they induce via their effect on the auxiliary fields, which now have a cubic equation of motion. This is in contrast to the usual (non-supersymmetric) effective field theory expansion which assumes that mass-suppressed higher-derivative terms do not affect the lower-derivative terms already present. We demonstrate with several examples that such changes in the potential can significantly mo…
We reconstruct the Ashtekar's canonical formulation of N = 2 supergravity (SUGRA) starting from the N = 2 chiral Lagrangian derived by closely following the method employed in the usual SUGRA. In order to get the full graded algebra of the Gauss, U(1) gauge and right-handed supersymmetry (SUSY) constraints, we extend the internal, global O(2) invariance to local one by introducing a cosmological constant to the chiral Lagrangian. The resultant Lagrangian does not contain any auxiliary fields in contrast with the 2-form SUGRA and the SUSY transformation parameters are not constrained at all. We…
We extend the covariant canonical formalism recently discussed in ref. [1] to geometric theories coupled to both bosonic and fermionic $p$-forms. This allows a covariant hamiltonian treatment of supergravity theories. As examples we present the covariant hamiltonian formulation for $d=3$ anti-De Sitter supergravity and for the "new minimal" $d=4$, $N=1$ supergravity (with $1$-form and $2$-form auxiliary fields). Form-Poisson brackets and form-Dirac brackets are defined, and used to find the form-canonical generators of all gauge symmetries via an algorithmic procedure.
We consider a two-fold problem: on the one hand, the classification of a family of solution-generating techniques in (modified) supergravity and, on the other hand, the classification of a family of canonical transformations of 2-dimensional $σ$-models giving rise to integrable-preserving transformations. Assuming a generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansatz, in fact, the two problems admit essentially the same algebraic formulation, emerging from an underlying double Lie algebra $\mathfrak d$. After presenting our derivation of the classification, we discuss in detail the relation to modified supergra…
We develop generating technique for solutions of $U(1)^3 5D$ supergravity via dimensional reduction to three dimensions. This theory, which recently attracted attention in connection with black rings, can be viewed as consistent truncation of the $T^6$ compactification of the eleven-dimensional supergravity. Its further reduction to three dimensions accompanied by dualisation of the vector fields leads to 3D gravity coupled sigma model on the homogeneous space $SO(4,4)/SO(4)\times SO(4)$ or $SO(4,4)/SO(2,2)\times SO(2,2)$ depending on the signature of the three-space. We construct a $8\times 8…
We study a solution generating technique in supergravity which can be viewed as a generalised version of U-duality, taking solutions of type IIA supergravity on a 6-sphere with RR flux to new solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity. The new solutions are characterised by an underlying 6-algebra structure. Our construction provides an 11-dimensional uplift of four-dimensional ISO(7) gauged supergravity, using $E_7$ exceptional geometry techniques. We focus on an example where we start with the D2 solution in type IIA supergravity and construct a new $\tfrac12$-BPS 11-dimensional solution.
A consistent set of asymptotic conditions for the simplest supergravity theory without cosmological constant in three dimensions is proposed. The canonical generators associated to the asymptotic symmetries are shown to span a supersymmetric extension of the BMS$_3$ algebra with an appropriate central charge. The energy is manifestly bounded from below with the ground state given by the null orbifold or Minkowski spacetime for periodic, respectively antiperiodic boundary conditions on the gravitino. These results are related to the corresponding ones in AdS$_3$ supergravity by a suitable flat …
We use fake supergravity as a solution generating technique to obtain a continuum of non-supersymmetric asymptotically $AdS_4\times S^7$ domain wall solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity with non-trivial scalars in the $SL(8,\mathbb{R})/SO(8)$ coset. These solutions are continuously connected to the supersymmetric domain walls describing a uniform sector of the Coulomb branch of the $M2$-brane theory. We also provide a general argument that under certain conditions identifies the fake superpotential with the exact large-N quantum effective potential of the dual theory, describing a marg…
We construct an extension of standard flat FLRW cosmology with matter, possessing local D = 1, N = 1 proper-time supersymmetry. The fundamental equation for the resulting mini-superspace models of quantum universes is a Dirac-like analogue of the Friedmann and Wheeler-DeWitt equations. We provide solutions of this equation for specific matter configurations based on the supersymmetric O(3) and O(2, 1) sigma-models. It turns out that in the compact model the volume rate of growth of the universe is quantized and non-vanishing due to the zero-point energy of the scalar fields. In the non-compact…
Quantization of gauge fields by the BRST method requires sources in addition to fields, and a bilinear anti-bracket defined in terms of them. This bracket is a sort of generalization of a Poisson bracket in classical mechanics. Canonical transformations are also generalized as anti-canonical transformations. In this paper, we take the analogy with classical mechanics one step further, by showing how anti-canonical transformations can be derived from generating functions. We give an example relevant to the renormalization of QCD in the Hamiltonian formalism.
We present $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity models of mutated hilltop inflation (MHI) for both large and small field sectors. Models with canonical kinetic terms are developed based on a shift symmetric Kähler potential in inflaton superfield, and with a superpotential linear in Goldstino superfield. We also construct models with non-canonical kinetic terms for MHI by generalizing the shift symmetry. We found that a good fraction of the models can address the entire branch of MHI in a single framework.
A solution generating technique is developed for D=5 minimal supergravity with two commuting Killing vectors based on the $G_2$ U-duality arising in the reduction of the theory to three dimensions. The target space of the corresponding 3-dimensional sigma-model is the coset $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2,R)\times SL(2,R))$. Its isometries constitute the set of solution generating symmetries. These include two electric and two magnetic Harrison transformations with the corresponding two pairs of gauge transformations, three $SL(2,R) S$-duality transformations, and the three gravitational scale, gauge and Ehle…
We study several aspects of the canonical quantization of supergravity in terms of the Asthekar variables. We cast the theory in terms of a $GSU(2)$ connection and we introduce a loop representation. The solution space is similar to the loop representation of ordinary gravity, the main difference being the form of the Mandelstam identities. Physical states are in general given by knot invariants that are compatible with the $GSU(2)$ Mandelstam identities. There is an explicit solution to all the quantum constraint equations connected with the Chern-Simons form, which coincides exactly with the…
In this paper, the classical and quantum theory of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity in four spacetime dimensions will be studied in the framework of loop quantum gravity. We discuss the canonical analysis of the supergravity Holst action as first introduced by Tsuda. In this way, we also derive a compact expression of the supersymmetry constraint, which plays a crucial role in canonical supergravity theories, akin to the role of the Hamiltonian constraint in non-supersymmetric generally covariant theories. The resulting theory is then quantized using loop quantum gravity methods. In particular, we…

We demonstrate a solution generating technique, modulo some constraints, for a large class of smooth supergravity solutions with the same asymptotic charges as a five dimensional 3-charge BPS black hole or black ring, dual to a D1/D5/P system. These solutions are characterized by a harmonic function with both positive and negative poles, which induces a geometric transition whereby singular sources have disappeared and all of the net charge at infinity is sourced by fluxes through two-cycles joining the poles of the harmonic function.
We show that the SL(2,R) duality symmetry of type IIB superstring theory can be formulated as the canonical transformation interchanging momenta and magnetic degrees of freedom associated to the abelian world-volume gauge field of the D-3-brane. D-strings are shown to be connected under the corresponding transformation in the world-sheet to the (m,n) family of string solutions of type IIB supergravity constructed by Schwarz. For the type IIA superstring the D-2-brane is mapped under the three dimensional world-volume electric-magnetic duality to the dimensional reduction of the membrane of M-t…
After reviewing the algebraic structures that underlie the geometries of N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories (MESGT) in five and four dimensions with symmetric scalar manifolds, we give a unified realization of their three dimensional U-duality groups as spectrum generating quasiconformal groups. They are F_{4(4)}, E_{6(2)}, E_{7(-5)}, E_{8(-24)} and SO(n+2,4). Our formulation is covariant with respect to U-duality symmetry groups of corresponding five dimensional supergravity theories, which are SL(3,R), SL(3,C), SU*(6), E_{6(6)} and SO(n-1,1)X SO(1,1), respectively. We determine the s…
We discuss the notion of generalised U-duality as a solution generating technique in supergravity. We demonstrate a method to take solutions of type IIA supergravity on a 3-sphere, with NSNS flux, to new solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity, using exceptional geometry techniques. These new solutions are characterised by an underlying 3-algebra structure, and generalise features of solutions obtained by non-abelian T-duality, which involve an underlying ordinary Lie algebra. We focus on an example where we start with the pp-F1-NS5 solution in type IIA supergravity. We discuss the properties…
We study how to generate new Lie algebras $\mathcal{G}(N_0,..., N_p,...,N_n)$ from a given one $\mathcal{G}$. The (order by order) method consists in expanding its Maurer-Cartan one-forms in powers of a real parameter $λ$ which rescales the coordinates of the Lie (super)group $G$, $g^{i_p} \to λ^p g^{i_p}$, in a way subordinated to the splitting of $\mathcal{G}$ as a sum $V_0 \oplus ... \oplus V_p \oplus ... \oplus V_n$ of vector subspaces. We also show that, under certain conditions, one of the obtained algebras may correspond to a generalized İnönü-Wigner contraction in the sense of Weimar-W…
A coset model based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E10 has been conjectured to underly eleven-dimensional supergravity and M theory. In this note we study the canonical structure of the bosonic model for finite- and infinite-dimensional groups. In the case of finite-dimensional groups like GL(n) we exhibit a convenient set of variables with Borel-type canonical brackets. The generalisation to the Kac-Moody case requires a proper treatment of the imaginary roots that remains elusive. As a second result, we show that the supersymmetry constraint of D=11 supergravity can be rewritten in a su…
We study a supersymmetry-preserving solution-generating method in heterotic supergravity. In particular, we use this method to construct one-parameter non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds with a U(1) isometry, in which the complex structure remains invariant. We explain how to obtain corresponding solutions to heterotic string theory, up to first order in α', by a modified form of the standard embedding. In the course of the paper we also show that Abelian heterotic supergravity embeds into type II supergravity, and note that the solution-generating method in this context is related…
We use the flux attractor equations to study IIB supergravity compactifications with ISD fluxes. We show that the attractor equations determine not just the values of moduli fields, but also the masses of those moduli and the gravitino. We then show that the flux attractor equations can be recast in terms of derivatives of a single generating function. We also find a simple expression for this generating function in terms of the gravitino mass, with both quantities considered as functions of the fluxes. For a simple prepotential, we explicitly solve the attractor equations. We conclude by disc…
We prove that a transformation, conjectured in our previous work, between phase-space variables in $\s$-models related by Poisson-Lie T-duality is indeed a canonical one. We do so by explicitly demonstrating the invariance of the classical Poisson brackets. This is the first example of a class of $\s$-models with no isometries related by canonical transformations. In addition we discuss generating functionals of canonical transformations in generally non-isometric, bosonic and supersymmetric $\s$-models and derive the complete set of conditions that determine them. We apply this general formal…
We obtain the parity invariant generating functional for the canonical transformation mapping the Liouville theory into a free scalar field and explain how it is related to the pseudoscalar transformation
We show that there exist nonlinearly realised duality symmetries that are independent of the standard supergravity global symmetries, and which provide active spectrum-generating symmetries for the fundamental BPS solitons. The additional ingredient, in any spacetime dimension, is a single scaling transformation that allows one to map between BPS solitons with different masses. Without the inclusion of this additional transformation, which is a symmetry of the classical equations of motion, but not the action, it is not possible to find a spectrum-generating symmetry. The necessity of includin…
Recently we suggested a solution generating technique for five-dimensional supergravity with three Abelian vector fields based on the hidden SO(4,4) symmetry of the three-dimensionally reduced theory. This technique generalizes the $G_{2(2)}$ generating technique developed earlier for minimal 5D supergravity (A. Bouchareb, G. Clément, C-M. Chen, D. V. Gal'tsov, N. G. Scherbluk, and Th. Wolf, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 76}, 104032 (2007)) and provides a new matrix representation for cosets forming the corresponding sigma-models in both cases. Here we further improve these methods introducing a matrix-va…
We study some properties of the canonical transformations in classical mechanics and quantum field theory and give a number of practical formulas concerning their generating functions. First, we give a diagrammatic formula for the perturbative expansion of the composition law around the identity map. Then, we propose a standard way to express the generating function of a canonical transformation by means of a certain "componential" map, which obeys the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We derive the diagrammatic interpretation of the componential map, work out its relation with the solution of…
In this paper we prove that the four-dimensional hyperbolic supersymmetric black holes can be unstable in the canonical ensemble. To this end, we work with an infinite class of $\,\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories interpolating between all the single dilaton truncations of the $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ gauged $\,\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity. Within these models, we study electrically charged solutions of two different kinds: supersymmetric hairy and extremal non-supersymmetric Reissner-Nordström black holes. We consider these solutions within the same canonical ensemble and show that, for suitable ch…
After reviewing the underlying algebraic structures we give a unified realization of split exceptional groups F_{4(4)},E_{6(6)}, E_{7(7)}, E_{8(8)} and of SO(n+3,m+3) as quasiconformal groups that is covariant with respect to their (Lorentz) subgroups SL(3,R), SL(3,R)XSL(3,R), SL(6,R), E_{6(6)} and SO(n,m)XSO(1,1), respectively. We determine the spherical vectors of quasiconformal realizations of all these groups twisted by a unitary character $ν$. We also give their quadratic Casimir operators and determine their values in terms of $ν$ and the dimension $n_V$ of the underlying Jordan algebras…
