We establish the existence of chimera states, simultaneously supporting synchronous and asynchronous dynamics, in a network consisting of two symmetrically linked star subnetworks consisting of identical oscillators with shear and Kuramoto--Sakaguchi coupling. We show that the chimera states may be metastable or asymptotically stable. If the intra-star coupling strength is of order $\varepsilon$, the chimera states persist on time scales at least of order $1/\varepsilon$ in general, and on time-scales at least of order $1/\varepsilon^2$ if the intra-star coupling is of Kuramoto--Sakaguchi type. If the intra-star coupling configuration is sparse, the chimeras are asymptotically stable. The analysis relies on a combination of dimensional reduction using a Möbius symmetry group and techniques from averaging theory and normal hyperbolicity.
Nontrivial collective behavior may emerge from the interactive dynamics of many oscillatory units. Chimera states are chaotic patterns of spatially localized coherent and incoherent oscillations. The recently-introduced notion of a weak chimera gives a rigorously testable characterization of chimera states for finite-dimensional phase oscillator networks. In this paper we give some persistence results for dynamically invariant sets under perturbations and apply them to coupled populations of phase oscillators with generalized coupling. In contrast to the weak chimeras with nonpositive maximal …
Chimera state is a recently discovered dynamical phenomenon in arrays of nonlocally coupled oscillators, that displays a self-organized spatial pattern of co-existing coherence and incoherence. We discuss the appearance of the chimera states in networks of phase oscillators with attractive and with repulsive interactions, i.e. when the coupling respectively favors synchronization or works against it. By systematically analyzing the dependence of the spatiotemporal dynamics on the level of coupling attractivity/repulsivity and the range of coupling, we uncover that different types of chimera st…
The Kuramoto model is a paradigm for studying oscillator networks with interplay between coupling tending towards synchronization, and heterogeneity in the oscillator population driving away from synchrony. In continuum versions of this model an oscillator population is represented by a probability density on the circle. Ott and Antonsen identified a special class of densities which is invariant under the dynamics and on which the dynamics are low-dimensional and analytically tractable. The reduction to the OA manifold has been used to analyze the dynamics of many variants of the Kuramoto mode…
For a system of ODEs defined on an open, convex domain $U$ containing a positively invariant set $Γ$, we prove that under appropriate hypotheses, $Γ$ is the graph of a $C^r$ function and thus a $C^r$ manifold. Because the hypotheses can be easily verified by inspecting the vector field of the system, this invariant manifold theory can be used to study the existence of invariant manifolds in systems involving a wide range of parameters and the persistence of invariant manifolds whose normal hyperbolicity vanishes when a small parameter goes to zero. We apply this invariant manifold theory to st…
Truncated Taylor series representations of invariant manifolds are abundant in numerical computations. We present an aposteriori method to compute the convergence radii and error estimates of analytic parametrisations of non-resonant local invariant manifolds of a saddle of an analytic vector field, from such a truncated series. This enables us to obtain local enclosures, as well as existence results, for the invariant manifolds.
Let $N$ be a smooth manifold and $f:N\to N$ be a $C^l$, $l\geq 2$ diffeomorphism. Let $M$ be a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, not necessarily compact. We prove an analogue of the $λ$-lemma in this case.
We study some classes of semi-linear differential equations including both well-posed and ill-posed cases that can generate cocycles (or cocycle correspondences with generating cocycles). Under exponential dichotomy condition with other mild assumptions, we investigate the existence, persistence and regularity of different types of invariant manifolds for these differential equations based on our previous works about invariant manifold theory for abstract `generalized dynamical systems': invariant graphs (global version) and normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds (local version); brief summar…
A general invariant manifold theorem is needed to study the topological classes of smooth dynamical systems. These classes are often invariant under renormalization. The classical invariant manifold theorem cannot be applied, because the renormalization operator for smooth systems is not differentiable and sometimes does not have an attractor. Examples are the renormalization operator for general smooth dynamics, such as unimodal dynamics, circle dynamics, Cherry dynamics, Lorenz dynamics, Hénon dynamics, etc. A general method to construct invariant manifolds of non-differentiable non-linear o…
In 1970, Hirsch asked what kind of compact invariant sets could be part of a hyperbolic set. Here we obtain that, in case such an invariant set is a 3D manifold, it is a connected sum of tori with handles quotiented by involutions. Moreover, if the manifold is orientable, the involutions are all trivial. In 1975, Ma{ñ}{é} characterized hyperbolic dynamics restricted to manifolds and called them quasi Anosov. We also classify here quasi-Anosov dynamics in 3D-manifolds.
We consider perturbations of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds, under which they can lose their hyperbolic properties. We show that if the perturbed map which drives the dynamical system exhibits some topological properties, then the manifold is perturbed to an invariant set. The main feature is that our results do not require the rate conditions to hold after the perturbation. In this case the manifold can be perturbed to an invariant set, which is not a topological manifold. Our method is not perturbative. It can be applied to establish invariant sets within a prescribed neighbourhood …
Invariant manifolds are important sets arising in the stability theory of dynamical systems. In this article, we take a brief review of invariant sets. We provide some results regarding the existence of invariant lines and parabolas in planar polynomial systems. We provide the conditions for the invariance of linear subspaces in fractional order systems. Further, we provide an important result showing the nonexistence of invariant manifolds (other than linear subspaces) in fractional order systems.
We prove the existence of measurable invariant manifolds for small perturbations of linear Random Dynamical Systems evolving on a Banach space and admitting a general type of dichotomy, both for continuous and discrete time. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior in the invariant manifold is similar to the one of the linear Random Dynamical System.
We show the existence of nonautonomous invariant manifolds for planar, asymptotically autonomous differential equations, that have equilibrium solutions with zero Lyapunov spectrum. These invariant manifolds correspond to the stable and unstable manifold of a desingularized equation, that we obtain by using the blow-up method. More precisely, the blow-up method is extended to the nonautonomous setting and transforms the original finite-dimensional ordinary differential equation into an infinite-dimensional delay equation with infinite delay, but hyperbolic structure. In the technical construct…
We study the computation of local approximations of invariant manifolds of parabolic fixed points and parabolic periodic orbits of periodic vector fields. If the dimension of these manifolds is two or greater, in general, it is not possible to obtain polynomial approximations. Here we develop an algorithm to obtain them as sums of homogeneous functions by solving suitable cohomological equations. We deal with both the differentiable and analytic cases. We also study the dependence on parameters. In the companion paper, Invariant manifolds of parabolic fixed points (I), these approximations are…
We present a topological proof of the existence of invariant manifolds for maps with normally hyperbolic-like properties. The proof is conducted in the phase space of the system. In our approach we do not require that the map is a perturbation of some other map for which we already have an invariant manifold. We provide conditions which imply the existence of the manifold within an investigated region of the phase space. The required assumptions are formulated in a way which allows for rigorous computer assisted verification. We apply our method to obtain an invariant manifold within an explic…
Invariant manifolds facilitate the understanding of nonlinear stochastic dynamics. When an invariant manifold is represented approximately by a graph for example, the whole stochastic dynamical system may be reduced or restricted to this manifold. This reduced system may provide valuable dynamical information for the original system. The authors have derived an invariant manifold reduction or restriction principle for systems of Stratonovich or Ito stochastic differential equations. Two concepts of invariance are considered for invariant manifolds. The first invariance concept is in the framew…
We study the structure of the smooth manifold which is defined as the intersection of a stable manifold and an unstable manifold for an invariant Morse-Smale function.
We study the effect of domain perturbation on invariant manifolds for semilinear parabolic equations subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. Under Mosco convergence assumption on the domains, we prove the upper and lower semicontinuity of both the local unstable invariant manifold and the local stable invariant manifold near a hyperbolic equilibrium. The continuity results are obtained by keeping track of the construction of invariant manifolds in P. W. Bates and C. K. R. T. Jones [Dynam. Report. Ser. Dynam. Systems Appl. Vol. 2, 1--38, 1989].
Invariant manifolds provide the geometric structures for describing and understanding dynamics of nonlinear systems. The theory of invariant manifolds for both finite and infinite dimensional autonomous deterministic systems, and for stochastic ordinary differential equations is relatively mature. In this paper, we present a unified theory of invariant manifolds for infinite dimensional {\em random} dynamical systems generated by {\em stochastic} partial differential equations. We first introduce a random graph transform and a fixed point theorem for non-autonomous systems. Then we show the ex…
Invariant manifolds play an important role in the study of the qualitative dynamical behaviors for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. However, the geometric shape of these manifolds is largely unclear. The purpose of the present paper is to try to describe the geometric shape of invariant manifolds for a class of stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative white noises. The local geometric shape of invariant manifolds is approximated, which holds with significant likelihood. Furthermore, the result is compared with that for the corresponding deterministic pa…
We prove a persistence result for noncompact normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds in Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry. The bounded geometry of the ambient manifold is a crucial assumption in order to control the uniformity of all estimates throughout the proof.
We prove a semi-invertible Oseledets theorem for cocycles acting on measurable fields of Banach spaces, i.e. we only assume invertibility of the base, not of the operator. As an application, we prove an invariant manifold theorem for nonlinear cocycles acting on measurable fields of Banach spaces.
Under ceratin conditions, generalized action-angle coordinates can be introduced near non-compact invariant manifolds of completely and partially integrable Hamiltonian systems.
We provide new geometric and spectral characterizations for a Riemannian manifold to be a Zoll manifold, i.e., all geodesics of which are periodic. We analyze relationships with invariant measures and quantum limits.
The qualitative properties of local random invariant manifolds for stochastic partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities and multiplicative noise is studied by a cut off technique. By a detail estimates on the Perron fixed point equation describing the local random invariant manifold, the structure near a bifurcation is given.
The Mishchenko-Fomenko theorem on noncommutative integrability of Hamiltonian systems on a symplectic manifold is extended to the case of noncompact invariant submanifolds.
