Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at Jefferson Laboratory's Hall C for the neutron rich $Λ$ hypernucleus $^{9}_Λ{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_Λ^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_Λ=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_Λ=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_Λ({\rm no.~2})=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_Λ({\rm no.~3})=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_Λ({\rm no.~3})$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests.
High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions gamma p -> p eta and gamma p -> p eta-prime have been measured using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The eta-prime results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The eta measurements extend the energy range of the world's large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the eta-prime measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.
The average prompt-fission-neutron multiplicity $\barν$ is of significance in the areas of nuclear theory, nuclear nonproliferation, and nuclear energy. In this work, the surrogate-reaction method has been used for the first time to indirectly determine $\barν$ for $^{239}$Pu($n$,$f$) via $^{240}$Pu($α$,$α^{\prime}f$) reactions. A $^{240}$Pu target was bombarded with a beam of 53.9-MeV $α$ particles. Scattered $α$ particles, fission products, and neutrons were measured with the NeutronSTARS detector array. Values of $\barν$ were obtained for a continuous range of equivalent incident neutron en…
In this article a method for lifetime measurements in the sub-picosecond regime via the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM) following the inelastic proton scattering reaction is presented. In a pioneering experiment we extracted the lifetimes of 30 excited low-spin states of $^{96}$Ru, taking advantage of the coincident detection of scattered protons and de-exciting $γ$-rays as well as the large number of particle and $γ$-ray detectors provided by the SONIC@HORUS setup at the University of Cologne. The large amount of new experimental data shows that this technique is suited for the measur…
Color transparency is studied for the $K^+$ meson produced due to large four-momentum transfer in the $(e,e^\prime)$ reaction on nuclei. The variation of the $K^+$ meson color transparency ($K^+$CT) with the photon virtuality, and kaon momentum is investigated. The calculated results for $K^+$CT are compared with the data reported from Jefferson Laboratory.
The missing-mass spectroscopy of $Λ$ hypernuclei via the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction has been developed through experiments at JLab Halls A and C in the last two decades. For the latest experiment, E05-115 in Hall C, we developed a new spectrometer system consisting of the HKS and HES; resulting in the best energy resolution ($E_Λ \simeq0.5$-MeV FWHM) and $B_Λ$ accuracy ($B_Λ\leq0.2$ MeV) in $Λ$-hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. This paper describes the characteristics of the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction compared to other reactions and experimental methods. In addition, the experimental…
The one neutron knock-out reaction $^1$H($^{20}$C,$^{19}$C$γ$) was studied at RIKEN using the DALI2 array. A $γ$ ray transition was observed at 198(10) keV. Based on the comparison between the experimental production cross section and theoretical predictions, the transition was assigned to the decay of the 3/2$_1^+$ state to the ground state.
For the forward going proton and $η$ meson, the coherent $η$ meson production in the $(p,p^\prime)$ reaction on the spin-isospin saturated nucleus occurs only due to the $η$ meson exchange interaction between the beam proton and nucleus. In this process, the nucleon in the nucleus can be excited to resonances $N^*$ and the $η$ meson in the final state can arise due to $N^* \to Nη$. We investigate the dynamics of resonances, including nucleon Born terms, and their interferences in the coherently added cross section of this reaction. We discuss the importance of $N(1520)$ resonance and show the …
Cross sections for neutron-induced reactions from surrogate data: revisiting the Weisskopf-Ewing approximation for $(n,n^{\prime})$ and $(n,2n)$ reactions
We study the inclusive near-threshold production of $η^\prime$ mesons in $π^-$ meson-nucleus reactions on the basis of the first-collision model relying on the nuclear spectral function and including incoherent processes of $η^\prime$ production in $π^-$ meson--proton collisions. The model accounts for the absorption of initial $π^-$ and final $η^\prime$ mesons, the binding of intranuclear protons and their Fermi motion, as well as the effect of the scalar $η^\prime$--nucleus potential (or the in-medium shift of the $η^\prime$ meson mass) on these processes. We calculate the differential and t…
A study of the partial-wave content of the $γp\to η^\prime p$ reaction in the fourth resonance region is presented, which has been prompted by new measurements of polarization observables for that process. Using the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave formalism, the incorporation of new data indicates that the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$, and $N(2120)3/2^-$ are the most significant contributors to the photoproduction process. New results for the branching ratios of the decays of these more prominent resonances to $Nη^\prime$ final states are provided; such branches have not been indi…
We study the near-threshold photoproduction of $η^\prime$ mesons from nuclei in coincidence with forward going protons in the kinematical conditions of the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment, recently performed at ELSA. The calculations have been performed within a collision model based on the nuclear spectral function. The model accounts for both the primary $γp \to {η^\prime}p$ process and the two-step intermediate nucleon rescattering processes as well as the effect of the nuclear $η^\prime$ mean-field potential. We calculate the exclusive $η^\prime$ kinetic energy distributions for the $^{12}$…
The structure of $^{33}$Mg was investigated by means of two knockout reactions, one-neutron removal from $^{34}$Mg and one-proton removal from $^{34}$Al. Using comparative analysis of the population of observed excited states in the residual $^{33}$Mg, the nature of these states can be deciphered. In addition, the long-standing controversy about the parity of the $^{33}$Mg ground state is resolved using momentum distribution analysis, showing a clear signature for negative parity. Partial cross section measurements are compared with the results of eikonal reaction theory combined with large-sc…

We are going to perform an inclusive spectroscopy experiment of eta' mesic nuclei with the 12C(p,d) reaction to study in-medium properties of the eta' meson. In nuclear medium, the eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. In case of sufficiently large mass reduction and small absorption width of eta' at normal nuclear density, peak structures of eta' mesic states in 11C will be observed near the eta' emission threshold even in an inclusive spectrum. The experiment will be carried out at GSI with proton beam supplied by SIS using FRS as a spectrometer. The d…
We report on the in-beam gamma spectroscopy of $^{102}$Sn and $^{100}$Cd produced via two-neutron removal from carbon and CH$_2$ targets at about 150 MeV/nucleon beam energy. New transitions assigned to the decay of a second 2$^+$ excited state at 2470(60) keV in $^{102}$Sn were observed. Two-neutron removal cross sections from $^{104}$Sn and $^{102}$Cd have been extracted. The enhanced cross section to the 2$^+_2$ in $^{102}$Sn populated via the $(p,p2n)$ reaction is traced back to an increase of shell-model structure overlaps, consistent with the hypothesis that the proton-induced two-deeply…
The neutron-deficient Ca isotopes continue to attract attention due to their importance for testing isospin symmetry and their relevance in capture reactions of interest for nova nucleosynthesis and the shape of light curves in Type I X-ray bursts. To date, spectroscopic information on 38,39 Ca is largely limited to data on lower-spin excited states. Here, we report in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of complementary higher-spin, complex-structure states in 39 Ca populated in fast-beam-induced, momentum-dissipative processes leading to neutron pickup onto excited configurations of the projectile, 9 Be…
Knockout reactions with heavy ion targets in inverse kinematics, as well as "quasi-free" (p,2p) and (p,pn) reactions are useful tools for nuclear spectroscopy. We report calculations on \textit{ab-initio} many-body wavefunctions based on the no-core shell model to study the nucleon removal reactions in light nuclei, including beryllium, carbon, and oxygen isotopic chains, and explore the importance of using an \textit{ab-initio} method. Our study helps clarifying how the extraction of spectroscopic factors from the experiments depend on the details of the many-body wavefunctions being probed. …
Neutron transfer reactions with fast secondary beams of $^{17}$Ne, $^{15}$O, and $^9$C have been studied with the HiRA and CAESAR arrays. Excited states of $^{18}$Ne, $^{16}$O, and $^{10}$C in the continuum have been identified using invariant-mass spectroscopy. The best experimental resolution of these states is achieved by selecting events where the decay fragments are emitted transverse to the beam direction. We have confirmed a number of spin assignments made in previous works for the negative-parity states of $^{18}$Ne. In addition we have found new higher-lying excited states in $^{16}$O…
Using adiabatic distorted-wave approximation (ADWA) with nonlocal optical potentials (NLOP) for $(d,p)$ transfer reactions [G.W. Bailey, N.K. Timofeyuk, and J.A. Tostevin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 162502 (2016)] reported strong sensitivity to the $n$-$p$ force model. This sensitivity disappears in rigorous three-body Faddeev-type results. Some shortcomings of ADWA with NLOP are pointed out.

An extended investigation of the low-spin structure of the $^{65}$Ni nucleus was performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, via the neutron capture reaction $^{64}$Ni(n,$γ$)$^{65}$Ni, using the FIPPS HPGe array. The level scheme of $^{65}$Ni was significantly expanded, with 2 new levels and 87 newly found transitions. Angular correlation analyses were also performed, allowing us to assign spins and parities for a number of states, and to determine multipolarity mixing ratios for selected $γ$ transitions. The low-energy part of the experimental level scheme (up to about 1.4 MeV) was com…
Excitation-energy spectra of $^{11}$C nuclei near the $η^\prime$-meson production threshold have been measured by missing-mass spectroscopy using the $^{12}$C($p$,$d$) reaction. A carbon target has been irradiated with a 2.5 GeV proton beam supplied by the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI to produce $η^\prime$ meson bound states in $^{11}$C nuclei. Deuterons emitted at $0^\circ$ in the reaction have been momentum-analyzed by the fragment separator (FRS) used as a high-resolution spectrometer. No distinct structure due to the formation of $η^\prime$-mesic states is observed although a high statistical…
We measured both the differential cross section ($σ_{p,p^\prime}$ $=d^2σ/dΩdE_{x}$) and the $γ$-ray emission probability ($R_γ(E_x)$ $=σ_{p,p^\primeγ}$/$σ_{p,p^\prime}$) from the giant resonances excited by $\rm^{12}C$(\textit{p,p}$^\prime$) reaction at 392 MeV and 0$^\circ$, using a magnetic spectrometer and an array of NaI(Tl) counters. The absolute value of $R_γ(E_x)$ was calibrated by using the well-known $γ$-ray emission probability from $\rm^{12}C^* ( 15.11$ MeV, $ 1^+$, $T=1$) and $\rm^{16}O^* ( 6.9$ MeV, $2^+$, $T=0$) states within 5\% uncertainty. We found that $R_γ(E_x)$ starts from …
Excited states of $^{38}_{17}$Cl$_{21}$ were populated in grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of $^{36}_{16}$S$_{20}$ ions of energy 215 MeV with a $^{208}_{82}$Pb$_{126}$ target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA $γ$-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via $γ$-ray emission. A level scheme for $^{38}$Cl is presented with tentative spin and parity assignments. The level scheme is discussed within the context of the systematics of neighboring nuclei and is compared with the results of state-of-the…
Gamow-Teller and dipole transitions to final states in 13B were studied via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at Et = 115 AMeV. Besides the strong Gamow-Teller transition to the 13B ground state, a weaker Gamow-Teller transition to a state at 3.6 MeV was found. This state was assigned a spin-parity of 3/2- by comparison with shell-model calculations using the WBP and WBT interactions which were modified to allow for mixing between nhw and (n+2)hw configurations. This assignment agrees with a recent result from a lifetime measurement of excited states in 13B. The shell-model calculations also explained t…
An extended database of experimental data is needed to address uncertainties of the nuclear-physics input parameters for Hauser-Feshbach calculations. Especially $α$+nucleus optical model potentials at low energies are not well known. The in-beam technique with an array of high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was successfully applied to the measurement of absolute cross sections of an ($α$,$γ$) reaction on a heavy nucleus at sub-Coulomb energies. The total and partial cross-section values were measured by means of in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Total and partial cross sections were measured a…
Background: The $^{22}$Ne($α,n$)$^{25}$Mg reaction is one of the neutron sources for the $s$-process in massive stars. The properties of levels in $^{26}$Mg above the $α$-particle threshold control the strengths of the $^{22}$Ne($α,n$)$^{25}$Mg and $^{22}$Ne($α,γ$)$^{26}$Mg reactions. The strengths of these reactions as functions of temperature are one of the major uncertainties in the $s$-process. Methods: Inelastically scattered $α$ particles from a $^{26}$Mg target were momentum-analysed in the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS, South Africa. The differential cross sections of stat…
Nuclear reaction data play an important role in nuclear reactor, medical, and fundamental science and national security applications. The wealth of information is stored in internally adopted ENDF-6 and EXFOR formats. We present a complete calculation of resonance integrals, Westcott factors, thermal and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for Z=1-100 using evaluated nuclear reaction data. The addition of newly-evaluated neutron reaction libraries, and improvements in data processing techniques allows us to calculate nuclear industry and astrophysics parameters, and provide additional insights …
We observed the atomic $1s$ and $2p$ states of $π^-$ bound to ${}^{121}{\rm Sn}$ nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ${}^{122}{\rm Sn}(d,{}^3{\rm He})$ nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve potential of discovery, which includes capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The $2p$ state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experi…
Theoretical models of low-energy (d,p) single-neutron transfer reactions are a crucial link between experimentation, nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysical studies. Whereas reaction models that use local optical potentials are insensitive to short-range physics in the deuteron, we show that including the inherent nonlocality of the nucleon-target interactions and realistic deuteron wave functions generates significant sensitivity to high n-p relative momenta and to the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction. We quantify this effect upon the deuteron channel distorting potentials within th…
The precise knowledge of the half-life of the reaction product is of crucial importance for a nuclear reaction cross section measurement carried out with the activation technique. The cross section of the $^{92}$Mo($α$,n)$^{95}$Ru reaction was measured recently using this experimental approach. The preliminary results indicated that the literature half-life of $^{95}$Ru, derived about half a century ago, is overestimated. Therefore, the half-lives of $^{95}$Ru and its daughter isotope $^{95}$Tc and $^{95m}$Tc have been measured with high precision using $γ$-spectroscopy. The results are t$_{1/…
Background: The $^{136}$Ba isotope is the daughter nucleus in $^{136}$Xe $ββ$ decay. It also lies in a shape transitional region of the nuclear chart, making it a suitable candidate to test a variety of nuclear models. Purpose: To obtain spectroscopic information on states in $^{136}$Ba, which will allow a better understanding of its low-lying structure. These data may prove useful to constrain future $^{136}$Xe $\to$ $^{136}$Ba neutrinoless $ββ$ decay matrix element calculations. Methods: A $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}(p,t)$ reaction was used to populate states in $^{136}$Ba up to approximately 4.6 MeV…
