Many applications of Visual SLAM, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, robotics or autonomous driving, require versatile, robust and precise solutions, most often with real-time capability. In this work, we describe OV$^{2}$SLAM, a fully online algorithm, handling both monocular and stereo camera setups, various map scales and frame-rates ranging from a few Hertz up to several hundreds. It combines numerous recent contributions in visual localization within an efficient multi-threaded architecture. Extensive comparisons with competing algorithms shows the state-of-the-art accuracy and real-time performance of the resulting algorithm. For the benefit of the community, we release the source code: \url{https://github.com/ov2slam/ov2slam}.

This paper presents ORB-SLAM, a feature-based monocular SLAM system that operates in real time, in small and large, indoor and outdoor environments. The system is robust to severe motion clutter, allows wide baseline loop closing and relocalization, and includes full automatic initialization. Building on excellent algorithms of recent years, we designed from scratch a novel system that uses the same features for all SLAM tasks: tracking, mapping, relocalization, and loop closing. A survival of the fittest strategy that selects the points and keyframes of the reconstruction leads to excellent r…

The rapid development of autonomous driving and mobile mapping calls for off-the-shelf LiDAR SLAM solutions that are adaptive to LiDARs of different specifications on various complex scenarios. To this end, we propose MULLS, an efficient, low-drift, and versatile 3D LiDAR SLAM system. For the front-end, roughly classified feature points (ground, facade, pillar, beam, etc.) are extracted from each frame using dual-threshold ground filtering and principal components analysis. Then the registration between the current frame and the local submap is accomplished efficiently by the proposed multi-me…

Event cameras have recently gained in popularity as they hold strong potential to complement regular cameras in situations of high dynamics or challenging illumination. An important problem that may benefit from the addition of an event camera is given by Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). However, in order to ensure progress on event-inclusive multi-sensor SLAM, novel benchmark sequences are needed. Our contribution is the first complete set of benchmark datasets captured with a multi-sensor setup containing an event-based stereo camera, a regular stereo camera, multiple depth sens…
Accurate 3D point cloud map generation is a core task for various robot missions or even for data-driven urban analysis. To do so, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology have been elaborated. To compose a full SLAM system, many odometry and place recognition methods have independently been proposed in academia. However, they have hardly been integrated or too tightly combined so that exchanging (upgrading) either single odometry or place recognition module is very effort demanding. Recently, the performance of each module has be…

The ability of accurate depth prediction by a convolutional neural network (CNN) is a major challenge for its wide use in practical visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) applications, such as enhanced camera tracking and dense mapping. This paper is set out to answer the following question: Can we tune a depth prediction CNN with the help of a visual SLAM algorithm even if the CNN is not trained for the current operating environment in order to benefit the SLAM performance? To this end, we propose a novel online adaptation framework consisting of two complementary processes: a SL…
This paper presents a hybrid real-time camera pose estimation framework with a novel partitioning scheme and introduces motion averaging to monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems. Breaking through the limitations of fixed-size temporal partitioning in many conventional SLAM pipelines, our approach significantly improves the accuracy of local bundle adjustment by gathering spatially-strongly-connected cameras into each block. With the dynamic initialization using intermediate computation values, \XL{we improve the Levenberg-Marquardt solver to further enhance the efficie…

Robot navigation technology is required to accomplish difficult tasks in various environments. In navigation, it is necessary to know the information of the external environments and the state of the robot under the environment. On the other hand, various studies have been done on SLAM technology, which is also used for navigation, but also applied to devices for Mixed Reality and the like. In this paper, we propose a robot-device calibration method for navigation with a device using SLAM technology on a robot. The calibration is performed by using the position and orientation information give…
A framework for online simultaneous localization, mapping and self-calibration is presented which can detect and handle significant change in the calibration parameters. Estimates are computed in constant-time by factoring the problem and focusing on segments of the trajectory that are most informative for the purposes of calibration. A novel technique is presented to detect the probability that a significant change is present in the calibration parameters. The system is then able to re-calibrate. Maximum likelihood trajectory and map estimates are computed using an asynchronous and adaptive o…
We present Wildcat, a novel online 3D lidar-inertial SLAM system with exceptional versatility and robustness. At its core, Wildcat combines a robust real-time lidar-inertial odometry module, utilising a continuous-time trajectory representation, with an efficient pose-graph optimisation module that seamlessly supports both the single- and multi-agent settings. The robustness of Wildcat was recently demonstrated in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge where it outperformed other SLAM systems across various types of sensing-degraded and perceptually challenging environments. In this paper, we extens…

In this paper, we fill this gap by presenting a novel online graph-based SLAM system for 2D LiDAR sensor in natural environments. By taking advantage of robust weighting scheme, sliding-windowed optimization, fast scan-matcher and parallel computing, our system not only delivers stable performance in cluttered surroudings but also meets real-time constraint. Simulated and experimental results confirm the feasibility and efficiency in the overall design o…

To achieve collaborative tasks, robots in a team need to have a shared understanding of the environment and their location within it. Distributed Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) offers a practical solution to localize the robots without relying on an external positioning system (e.g. GPS) and with minimal information exchange. Unfortunately, current distributed SLAM systems are vulnerable to perception outliers and therefore tend to use very conservative parameters for inter-robot place recognition. However, being too conservative comes at the cost of rejecting many valid loop clo…

We present a real-time semantic mapping approach for mobile vision systems with a 2D to 3D object detection pipeline and rapid data association for generated landmarks. Besides the semantic map enrichment the associated detections are further introduced as semantic constraints into a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system for pose correction purposes. This way, we are able generate additional meaningful information that allows to achieve higher-level tasks, while simultaneously leveraging the view-invariance of object detections to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the od…
Applications involving autonomous navigation and planning of mobile agents can benefit greatly by employing online Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) techniques, however, their proper implementation still warrants an efficient amalgamation with any offline path planning method that may be used for the particular application. In this paper, such a case of amalgamation is considered for a LiDAR-based indoor mapping system which presents itself as a 2D coverage path planning problem implemented along with online SLAM. This paper shows how classic offline Coverage Path Planning (CPP) can…
Modern 3D laser-range scanners have a high data rate, making online simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) computationally challenging. Recursive state estimation techniques are efficient but commit to a state estimate immediately after a new scan is made, which may lead to misalignments of measurements. We present a 3D SLAM approach that allows for refining alignments during online mapping. Our method is based on efficient local mapping and a hierarchical optimization back-end. Measurements of a 3D laser scanner are aggregated in local multiresolution maps by means of surfel-based regis…
Recent achievements in depth prediction from a single RGB image have powered the new research area of combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with classical simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms. The depth prediction from a CNN provides a reasonable initial point in the optimization process in the traditional SLAM algorithms, while the SLAM algorithms further improve the CNN prediction online. However, most of the current CNN-SLAM approaches have only taken advantage of the depth prediction but not yet other products from a CNN. In this work, we explore the use of the …

We present a fast, scalable, and accurate Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) system that represents indoor scenes as a graph of objects. Leveraging the observation that artificial environments are structured and occupied by recognizable objects, we show that a compositional scalable object mapping formulation is amenable to a robust SLAM solution for drift-free large scale indoor reconstruction. To achieve this, we propose a novel semantically assisted data association strategy that obtains unambiguous persistent object landmarks, and a 2.5D compositional rendering method that enable…

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are becoming standard tools for underwater exploration and seabed mapping in both scientific and industrial applications \cite{graham2022rapid, stenius2022system}. Their capacity to dive untethered allows them to reach areas inaccessible to surface vessels and to collect data more closely to the seafloor, regardless of the water depth. However, their navigation autonomy remains bounded by the accuracy of their dead reckoning (DR) estimate of their global position, severely limited in the absence of a priori maps of the area and GPS signal. Global localizat…
With the dominance of keyframe-based SLAM in the field of robotics, the relative frame poses between keyframes have typically been sacrificed for a faster algorithm to achieve online applications. However, those approaches can become insufficient for applications that may require refined poses of all frames, not just keyframes which are relatively sparse compared to all input frames. This paper proposes a novel algorithm to correct the relative frames between keyframes after the keyframes have been updated by a back-end optimization process. The correction model is derived using conservation o…

Modern LiDAR-SLAM (L-SLAM) systems have shown excellent results in large-scale, real-world scenarios. However, they commonly have a high latency due to the expensive data association and nonlinear optimization. This paper demonstrates that actively selecting a subset of features significantly improves both the accuracy and efficiency of an L-SLAM system. We formulate the feature selection as a combinatorial optimization problem under a cardinality constraint to preserve the information matrix's spectral attributes. The stochastic-greedy algorithm is applied to approximate the optimal results i…

Through careful estimation of a posteriori weighted pose-graphs, D-optimal decision-making is achieved online with the objective of improving localization and map…
It is often desirable to capture and map semantic information of an environment during simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Such semantic information can enable a robot to better distinguish places with similar low-level geometric and visual features and perform high-level tasks that use semantic information about objects to be manipulated and environments to be navigated. While semantic SLAM has gained increasing attention, there is little research on semanticlevel data association based on semantic objects, i.e., object-level data association. In this paper, we propose a novel objec…

Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is a well-known estimation method used in many robotic and computer vision applications. Under Gaussian assumption, the MLE converts to a nonlinear least squares (NLS) problem. Efficient solutions to NLS exist and they are based on iteratively solving sparse linear systems until convergence. In general, the existing solutions provide only an estimation of the mean state vector, the resulting covariance being computationally too expensive to recover. Nevertheless, in many simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) applications, knowing only the mean vector …
