We consider reflection-asymmetric thin-shell wormholes within Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity using a matching procedure of two patches of electrovacuum space-times at a hypersurface (the shell) via suitable junction conditions. The conditions for having (linearly) stable wormholes supported by positive-energy matter sources are determined. We also identify some subsets of parameters able to locate the shell radius above the event horizon (when present) but below the photon sphere (on both sides). We illustrate with an specific example that such two photon spheres allow an observer on one of the sides of the wormhole to see another (circular) shadow in addition to the one generated by its own photon sphere, which is due to the photons passing above the maximum of the effective potential on its side and bouncing back across the throat due to a higher effective potential on the other side. We finally comment on the capability of these double shadows to seek for traces of new gravitational physics beyond that described by General Relativity.
The study of shadow is quite prominent nowadays because of the ongoing Event Horizon Telescope\footnote{https://eventhorizontelescope.org/} observations. We construct the shadow images of charged wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory. The spacetime metric of the charged wormholes contains three charges: magnetic charge $P$, electric charge $Q$, and dilaton charge $Σ$. We evaluate the photon geodesics around the charged wormholes. We also calculate the effective potential and discuss its behavior with angular momentum $L$ and different values of charges $P$, $Q$, and $Σ$. A study o…
In this paper we study the correspondence between the real part of quasinormal modes (QNMs) and the shadow radius in a wormhole spacetime. Firstly we consider the above correspondence in a static and spherically symmetric wormhole spacetime and then explore this correspondence numerically by considering different wormhole models having specific redshift functions. To this end, we generalize this correspondence to the rotation wormhole spacetime and calculate the typical shadow radius of the rotating wormhole when viewed from the equatorial plane. We argue that due to the rotation and depending…
The prospect of identifying wormholes by investigating the shadows of wormholes constitute a foremost source of insight into the evolution of compact objects and it is one of the essential problems in contemporary astrophysics. The nature of the compact objects (wormholes) plays a crucial role on shadow effect, which actually arises during the strong gravitational lensing. Current Event Horizon Telescope observations have inspired scientists to study and to construct the shadow images of the wormholes. In this work, we explore the shadow cast by a certain class of rotating wormhole. To search …
In this paper, we calculate the weak deflection angle by Casimir wormhole and its shadow. To do so, we derive the Gaussian optical curvature and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. Then we find the deflection angle by Casimir wormhole in weak field limits. Moreover, we obtain the weak deflection angle in the presence of plasma medium and see the effect of the plasma medium on the weak deflection angle. Moreover, we study a shadow of Casimir wormhole and we plot and discuss them. We show the shadow of Casimir wormhole's behavior when changing the value of $a$.
Wormholes are hypothetical objects which can be black hole mimickers with strong gravitational fields. Recently, Wielgus et al. have constructed reflection-asymmetric thin-shell wormholes which are composed of the parts of a Schwarzschild spacetime and a Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime with two photon spheres with different sizes each other in [M. Wielgus, J. Horak, F. Vincent, and M. Abramowicz, Phys. Rev. D 102, 084044 (2020)]. They have discussed observational property of the shadows with two photon rings in different sizes as seen from an observer and they have named their shadows double shad…
Investigations of shadows of astrophysical entities constitute a major source of insight into the evolution of compact objects. Such effects depend on the nature of the compact object and arise on account of the strong gravitational lensing that casts a shadow on the bright background. We consider the Kerr-like wormhole spacetime (Phys.\ Rev.\ D 97:024040, 2018), which is a modification of the Kerr black hole that degenerates into wormholes for nonzero values of the deviation parameter $λ^2$. The results suggest that the Kerr spacetime can reproduce far away from the throat of the wormhole. We…
For dark compact objects such as black holes or wormholes, the shadow size has long been thought to be determined by the unstable photon sphere (region). However, by considering the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole (ATSW) model, we find that the impact parameter of the null geodesics is discontinuous through the wormhole in general and hence we identify novel shadows whose sizes are dependent of the photon sphere in the other side of the spacetime. The novel shadows appear in three cases: (A2) The observer's spacetime contains a photon sphere and the mass parameter is smaller than that of the op…
The problem of bending and scattering of light rays passing outside from the entrance to a wormhole with zero gravitational mass is considered. The process of ray capture by a wormhole as well as the process of formation of a shadow when illuminated by a standard screen is investigated. These mechanisms are also compared to the case of motion of light rays in the vicinity of the Schwarzschild black hole.
We compute the shadow cast by a charged Morris-Thorne wormhole when the light source is a star located beyond the mouth which is opposite to the observer. First, we provide an extensive analysis of the geodesic properties of the spacetime, both for null and massive particles. The geometrical properties of this solution are such that independently of the viewing angle, some light rays always reach the observer. Additionally, the structure of the images is preserved among the different values of the charge and scales proportionally to the charge value.

Recently, an analytical solution in Einstein-aether theory was presented explicitly in isotropic coordinates. It is characterized by a mass parameter $m$ and a combined coupling constant $c_{14}$. By a coordinate transformation, we verify this solution is equivalent to the previously known static aether solution. Assuming photons couple minimally to aether and gravity, we investigate the photon sphere and shadow of the solution by varying $c_{14}$. Results are compared with those of the Schwarzschild black hole.
The general parametrization for spacetimes of spherically symmetric Lorentzian, traversable wormholes in an arbitrary metric theory of gravity is presented. The parametrization is similar in spirit to the post-Newtonian parametrized formalism, but with validity that extends beyond the weak field region and covers the whole space. Our method is based on a continued-fraction expansion in terms of a compactified radial coordinate. Calculations of shadows and quasinormal modes for various examples of parametrization of known wormhole metrics that we have performed show that, for most cases, the pa…
We study shadows cast by a certain class of rotating wormholes and point out the crucial role of a rotating wormhole throat in the formation of a shadow. Overlooking this crucial role of a wormhole throat has resulted incomplete results in the previous studies on shadows of the same class of rotating wormholes. We explore the dependence of the shadows on the spin of the wormholes. We compare our results with that of the Kerr black hole. With increasing values of the spin, the shapes of the wormhole shadows start deviating considerably from that of the black hole. Such considerable deviation, i…
We revisit the shadow of rotating traversable wormholes discussing the role of the wormhole throat in the shadow formation. For certain classes of wormholes the throat serves as a potential barrier for light rays with particular impact parameters, thus modifying the shadow shape. We consider a couple of wormhole solutions and examine the structure of their shadow images, and the intrinsic mechanisms for their formation. Some of the shadows possess cuspy edges, which arise due to the interplay of two distinct families of unstable spherical orbits. These solutions provide examples, in which the …
We explore the shadow of certain class of rotating traversable wormholes within classical general relativity. The images depend on the angular momentum of the wormhole, and the inclination angle of the observer. We compare the results with the case of the Kerr black hole. For small angular momenta the shadows for the two solutions are nearly identical, however with the increasing of the angular momentum they start to deviate considerably.
We revisit to investigate shadows cast by Kerr-like wormholes. The boundary of the shadow is determined by unstable circular photon orbits. We find that, in certain parameter regions, the orbit is located at the throat of the Kerr-like wormhole, which was not considered in the literature. In these cases, the existence of the throat alters the shape of the shadow significantly, and makes it possible for us to differentiate it from that of a Kerr black hole.
A new solution has been presented for the spherically symmetric space time describing wormholes with Phantom Energy. The model suggests that the existence of wormhole is supported by arbitrarily small quantity of Phantom Energy.
As an extension of our previous work, which investigated the shadows of the Ellis wormhole surrounded by nonrotating dust, in this paper we study wormhole shadows in rotating dust flow. First, we derive steady-state solutions of slowly rotating dust surrounding the wormhole by solving relativistic Euler equations. Solving null geodesic equations and radiation transfer equations, we investigate the images of the wormhole surrounded by dust for the above steady-state solutions. Because the Ellis wormhole spacetime possesses unstable circular orbits of photons, a bright ring appears in the image,…
Traversible wormhole space-times are found as static, spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein equations with ingoing and outgoing pure ghost radiation, i.e. pure radiation with negative energy density. Switching off the radiation causes the wormhole to collapse to a Schwarzschild black hole.
It is generally believed that wormholes are supported by exotic matter violating Null Energy Condition (NEC). However, various studies of wormhole geometries under Lovelock theories of gravity have reported existence of wormhole supported by matter satisfying NEC. Being inspired by these results, we explore the possibility of the existence of wormhole supported by normal quark matter in third order Lovelock gravity theory. Well known MIT Bag Model Equation of state is chosen for describing the quark matter. Taking physically acceptable approximations, we solve the field equations for shape fun…
We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between…
Abstract This short paper investigates the harmonic behavior of a general-relativistic thin-shell wormhole supported by a particular type of exotic fluid. The exotic fluid obeys a never-studied-before metric-dependent equation of state. This equation of state is tailored such that the wormhole's throat undergoes a harmonic-like behavior before damping to an equilibrium radius. Eventually, the mirror-symmetric Schwarzschild thin-shell wormhole is studied in this framework as an example.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain exact solutions of the Einstein field equations describing traversable wormholes supported by phantom energy. Their relationship to exact solutions in the literature is also discussed, as well as the conditions required to determine such solutions.
When Morris and Thorne first proposed that traversable wormholes may be actual physical objects, they concentrated on the geometry by specifying the shape and redshift functions. This mathematical approach necessarily raises questins regarding the determination of the required stress-energy tensor. This paper discusses a natural way to obtain a complete wormhole solution by assuming that the wormhole (1) is supported by generalized Chaplygin gas and (2) admits conformal Killing vectors.
We study the problem of existence of static spherically symmetric wormholes supported by the kink-like configuration of a scalar field. With this aim we consider a self-consistent, real, nonlinear, nonminimally coupled scalar field $ϕ$ in general relativity with the symmetry-breaking potential $V(ϕ)$ possessing two minima. We classify all possible field configurations ruling out those of them for which wormhole solutions are impossible. Field configurations admitting wormholes are investigated numerically. Such the configurations represent a spherical domain wall localized near the wormhole th…
We discuss construction and observational properties of wormholes obtained by connecting two Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes with distinct mass and charge parameters. These objects are spherically symmetric, but not reflection-symmetric, as the connected spacetimes differ. The reflection-asymmetric wormholes may reflect a significant fraction of the infalling radiation back to the spacetime of its origin. We interpret this effect in a simple framework of the effective photon potential. Depending on the model parameters, image of such a wormhole seen by a distant observer (its "shadow") may conta…
In this work we construct traversable wormholes geometries in the framework of the complexity factor. We provide the redshift function of a Casimir traversable wormhole which, in combination with a non--vanishing complexity factor, leads to a traversable wormhole with a minimum amount of exotic matter. The shape function and the embedding diagram are shown and discussed. The tidal accelerations and the time required to get through the wormholes are estimated.
Recent papers by Fewster and Roman have emphasized that wormholes supported by arbitrarily small amounts of exotic matter will have to be incredibly fine-tuned if they are to be traversable. This paper discusses a wormhole model that strikes a balance between two conflicting requirements, reducing the amount of exotic matter and fine-tuning the metric coefficients, ultimately resulting in an engineering challenge: one requirement can only be met at the expense of the other. The wormhole model is macroscopic and satisfies various traversability criteria.
In this article, we have found a series solution of 3D Einstein equations describing a wormhole for an inhomogeneous distribution of phantom energy. Here, we assume equation of state is linear but highly anistropic.
We have examined the possible construction of a stationary, spherically symmetric and spatially inhomogeneous wormhole spacetime supported by the phantom energy. The later is supposed to be represented by the modified Chaplygin gas equation of state. The solutions so obtained satisfy the flare out and the asymptotic flatness conditions. It is also shown that the averaged null energy condition has to be violated for the existence of the wormhole.
We explore the possibility that traversable wormholes be supported by specific equations of state responsible for the present accelerated expansion of the Universe, namely, phantom energy, the generalized Chaplygin gas, and the van der Waals quintessence equation of state.
Recently, spherically symmetric, static wormholes supported by exotic dust and a radial magnetic field have been derived and argued to be stable with respect to linear radial fluctuations. In this report we point out that these wormholes are unstable due to the formation of shell-crossing singularities when the nonlinearities of the theory are taken into account.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible existence or construction of traversable wormholes supported by generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) by starting with a general line element and the Einstein tensor, together with the equation of state, thereby continuing an earlier study by the author of wormholes supported by phantom energy. Numerical techniques are used to demonstrate the existence of wormhole spacetimes that (1) meet the flare-out conditions at the throat, (2) are traversable by humanoid travelers, thanks to low tidal forces and short proper distances near the throat, and (3)…
An analytical solution representing traversable asymptotically flat and symmetric wormholes was obtained without adding exotic matter in two different theories independently: in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory and in the second Randall-Sundrum brane-world model. Further, a smooth normalizable asymmetric wormhole solution has been recently obtained numerically in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory. Using the time-domain integration method we study quasinormal ringing of all these wormholes with emphasis to the regime of mimicking the near extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, which is chara…
The possible process of creation/annihilation of traversable wormholes in the model with phantom (ghost) scalar field is described. It is shown that such process can be realized only for some special choice of a potential energy, in particular, for the Sine-Gordon potential.
In this article, we study the possibility of sustaining a static and spherically symmetric traversable wormhole geometries admitting conformal motion in Einstein gravity, which presents a more systematic approach to search a relation between matter and geometry. In wormhole physics, the presence of exotic matter is a fundamental ingredient and we show that this exotic source can be dark energy type which support the existence of wormhole spacetimes. In this work we model a wormhole supported by dark energy which admits conformal motion. We also discuss the possibility of detection of wormholes…
It was pointed out by Fewster and Roman that some of the wormhole models discussed by Kuhfittig suffer from the failure to distinguish proper from coordinate distances. One of the advantages of "designer wormholes" is that models can be altered. The purpose of this note is to show that by adjusting the metric coefficients, some of these problems can be corrected. By doing so, the basic idea can be retained: wormholes containing only small amounts of exotic matter can still be traversable.
In this paper, we study the deflection angle for wormhole-like static aether solution by using Gibbons and Werner technique in non-plasma, plasma, and dark matter mediums. For this purpose, we use optical spacetime geometry to calculate the Gaussian optical curvature, then implement the Gauss-Bonnet theorem in weak field limits. Moreover, we compute the deflection angle by using a technique known as Keeton and Petters technique. Furthermore, we analyze the graphical behavior of the bending angle $ψ$ with respect to the impact parameter $b$, mass $m$ as an integration constant, and parameter $q…
It is shown in the first part of this paper that a combined model comprising ordinary and quintessential matter can support a traversable wormhole in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Since the solution allows zero tidal forces, the wormhole is suitable for a humanoid traveler. The second part of the paper shows that the electric field can be eliminated (Einstein gravity), but only by tolerating enormous tidal forces. Such a wormhole would still be capable of transmitting signals.
This paper discusses a new variable equation of state parameter leading to exact solutions of the Einstein field equations describing traversable wormholes. In addition to generalizing the notion of phantom energy, the equation of state generates a mathematical model that combines the generalized phantom energy and the generalized Chaplygin gas models.
We present new, asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric and traversable wormhole solutions in General Relativity which are supported by a family of ghost scalar fields with quartic potential. This family consists of a particular composition of the scalar field modes, in which each mode is characterized by the same value of the angular momentum number $\ell$, yet the composition yields a spherically symmetric stress-energy-momentum and metric tensor. For $\ell = 0$ our solutions reduce to wormhole configurations which had been reported previously in the literature. We discuss the eff…
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two Schwarzschild particles which are kept in equilibrium by strings (ropes) extending to infinity. The wormhole is obtained by matching two three-dimensional timelike surfaces surrounding each of the particles and thus spacetime becomes non-simply connected. Although the matching will not be exact in general it is possible to make the error arbitrarily small by assuming that the distance between the particles is much larger than the radius of the wormhole mouths. Whenever the masses of the two wormhole mouths are diff…
We provide a new model of higher dimensional wormholes supported by phantom energy derived from a scalar field with negative kinetic term. We have shown that the Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) violating phantom energy can be reduced as desired. We have also noticed that dimension of the spacetime plays a crucial role for measuring the ANEC violating matter needed.
Recently in (Phys. Rev. D 76, 087502 (2007) and Phys. Rev. D 77, 089903(E) (2008)) a thin-shell wormhole has been introduced in 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) gravity which was supported by normal matter. We wish to consider this solution and investigate its stability. Our analysis shows that for the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) parameter $α<0,$ stability regions form for a narrow band of finely-tuned mass and charge. For the case $α>0$, we iterate once more that no stable, normal matter thin-shell wormhole exists.
