Engineering nanophotonic mode dispersions in ultrathin, planar structures enables significant control over infrared perfect absorption (PA) and thermal emission characteristics. Here, using simulations, the wavelength and angular ranges over which ultrathin, low loss, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) films on a reflecting surface most efficiently absorb and re-radiate are identified, and the design parameters that tailor the ENZ mode dispersion within these limits are investigated. While the absorption is spectrally limited to wavelengths where the refractive index ($n$) lies below unity, the angular limits are determined by the ENZ material dispersion in this range. A model of ultrathin-film interference is developed to provide physical insight into the absorption resonances in this regime, occurring well below the conventional quarter-wavelength thickness limit. Driven by non-trivial phase shifts incurred on reflection at the $n<1$ surface, these resonant interferences are shown to be universal wave phenomena in planar structures having appropriate index contrast, extending beyond ENZ materials. Selective choice of material, film thickness and loss allows fine-tailoring the mode dispersions, enabling wide variation in spectral range ($ \sim 0.1 - 1.0 μm$) and precise directional control of spectrally and angularly narrow-band PA and thermal radiation, paving the way towards efficient ENZ-based infrared optical and thermal coatings.
We experimentally demonstrate efficient third harmonic generation from an indium tin oxide (ITO) nanofilm (lambda/42 thick) on a glass substrate for a pump wavelength of 1.4 um. A conversion efficiency of 3.3x10^-6 is achieved by exploiting the field enhancement properties of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode with an enhancement factor of 200. This nanoscale frequency conversion method is applicable to other plasmonic materials and reststrahlen materials in proximity of the longitudinal optical phonon frequencies.
We demonstrate that a strong asymmetric transmission for forward and backward propagation of tilted circular polarized optical waves is supported by ultrathin epsilon-near-zero hyperbolic slabs. We find that, remarkably, this effect is solely triggered by anisotropy without resorting to any breaking of reciprocity and chiral symmetries or spatial nonlocal effects. In addition, we show that the asymmetric transmission undergoes a dramatic enhancement if the slab is hyperbolic in the epsilon-near-zero regime. This happens since, close to epsilon-near-zero point, the hyperbolic dispersion activat…
Above-light-line surface plasmon polaritons can arise at the interface between a metal and epsilon-near-zero metamaterial. This unique feature induces unusual fast-wave non-radiative modes in a epsilon-near-zero material/metal bilayer. Excitation of this peculiar mode leads to wide-angle perfect absorption in low-loss ultrathin metamaterials. The ratio of the perfect absorption wavelength to the thickness of the epsilon-near-zero metamaterial can be as high as 10^4; the electromagnetic energy can be confined in a layer as thin as λ/10000. Unlike conventional fast-wave leaky modes, these fast-w…
Immense optical field enhancement was predicted to occur for the Berreman mode in ultrathin films at frequencies in the vicinity of epsilon near zero (ENZ). Here, we report the first experimental proof of this prediction in the mid-infrared by probing the resonantly enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) at the longitudinal optic phonon frequency from a deeply subwavelength-thin aluminum nitride (AlN) film. Employing a transfer matrix formalism, we show that the field enhancement is completely localized inside the AlN layer, revealing that the observed SHG signal of the Berreman mode is sol…
The unique properties of the emerging photonic materials - conducting nitrides and oxides - especially their tailorability, large damage thresholds, and the so-called epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior, have enabled novel photonic phenomena spanning optical circuitry, tunable metasurfaces, and nonlinear optical devices. This work explores direct control of the optical properties of polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) by tailoring the film thickness, and their potential for ENZ-enhanced photonic applications. We demonstrate that TiN-AZO bilayers act as Ferre…
This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
Nonreciprocal transmission forms the basic operation mechanism of optical diodes and isolators and requires the tantalizing task of breaking the Lorentz reciprocity law. In this work, strong nonreciprocal transmission is demonstrated by using a compact nonlinear parity-time (PT) symmetric system based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials photonically doped with gain and loss defects and separated by an ultrathin air gap. The nonlinear response of this scalable configuration is triggered at relatively low optical intensities due to the strong electric field confinement in the defects. The extre…
We report the first observation of epsilon near zero (ENZ) phonon polaritons in an ultrathin AlN film fully hybridized with surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) supported by the adjacent SiC substrate. Employing a strong coupling model for the analysis of the dispersion and electric field distribution in these hybridized modes, we show that they share the most prominent features of the two precursor modes. The novel ENZ-SPhP coupled polaritons with a highly propagative character and deeply sub-wavelength light confinement can be utilized as building blocks for future infrared and terahertz (THz) n…
We present a theoretical analysis of the effects of short range surface plasmon polariton excitation on sub-wavelength bridges in metal gratings. We show that localized resonances in thin metal bridges placed within the slit of a free-standing silver grating dramatically modify transmission spectra and boost absorption regardless of the periodicity of the grating. Additionally, the interference of multiple localized resonances makes it possible to tailor the absorption properties of ultrathin gratings, regardless of the apertures' geometrical size. This tunable, narrow-band, enhanced-absorptio…
Optical properties of a metasurface which can be considered a monolayer of two classical uniaxial metamaterials, parallel-plate and nanorod arrays, are investigated. It is shown that such metasurface acts as an ultimately thin sub-50 nm wave plate. This is achieved via an interplay of epsilon-near-zero and epsilon-near-pole behavior along different axes in the plane of the metasurface allowing for extremely rapid phase difference accumulation in very thin metasurface layers. These effects are shown to not be disrupted by non-locality and can be applied to the design of ultrathin wave plates, P…
Optomechanics deals with the control and applications of mechanical effects of light that stems from the redistribution of photon momenta in light scattering. Here, we investigate, analytically and numerically, optical forces on polarizable particles in proximity of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. We look at the general features of the repulsive-attractive optomechanics from the nano to the microscale exploiting different theoretical methods (dipole approximation, finite elements calculations, transition (T-)matrix). We discuss the role of realistic layered materials, as our ENZ substra…
The field effect in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors plays a key role in field-effect transistors (FETs), which are the fundamental building blocks of modern digital integrated circuits. Recent works show that the field effect can also be used to make optical/plasmonic modulators. In this paper, we report field effect electro-absorption modulators (FEOMs) each made of an ultrathin epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) film, as the active material, sandwiched in a silicon or plasmonic waveguide. Without a bias, the ENZ film maximizes the attenuation of the waveguides and the modulators work at the …
Nonreciprocal transmission is the fundamental process behind unidirectional wave propagation phenomena. In our work, a compact and practical parity-time (PT) symmetric metamaterial is designed based on two Silicon Carbide (SiC) media separated by an air gap and photonically doped with gain and loss defects. We demonstrate that an exceptional point (EP) is formed in this PT-symmetric system when SiC operates as a practical epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material and by taking into account its moderate optical loss. Furthermore and even more importantly, strong self-induced nonreciprocal transmission i…
In recent years, the concept of metamaterials has offered platforms for unconventional tailoring and manipulation of the light-matter interaction. Here, we explore the notion of "static optics", in which the electricity and magnetism are decoupled and their fields are statically distributed, while being temporally dynamic. This occurs when both the relative effective permittivity and permeability attain near-zero values at an operating frequency. We theoretically investigate some of the unprecedented wave features, such as unusual radiation characteristics of an emitter embedded in such epsilo…
We theoretically study unattenuated electromagnetic guided wave modes in centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal layered systems. By solving Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic fields and using the appropriate boundary conditions, we derive dispersion relations for propagating modes in a finite-sized Weyl semimetal. Our findings reveal that for ultrathin structures, and proper Weyl cones tilts, extremely localized guided waves can propagate along the semimetal interface over a certain range of frequencies. This follows from the anisotropic nature of the semimetal where the diagonal components o…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to the order of 0.01% at SH wavelength of 282 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump power via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d3…
We experimentally demonstrate single beam directional perfect absorption (to within experimental accuracy) of p-polarized light in the near-infrared using unpatterned, deep subwavelength films of indium tin oxide (ITO) on Ag. The experimental perfect absorption occurs slightly above the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) frequency of ITO where the permittivity is less than one. Remarkably, we obtain perfect absorption for films whose thickness is as low as ~1/50th of the operating free-space wavelength and whose single pass attenuation is only ~ 5%. We further derive simple analytical conditions for perf…
