Self-driving cars and other autonomous vehicles need to detect and track objects in camera images. We present a simple online tracking algorithm that is based on a constant velocity motion model with a Kalman filter, and an assignment heuristic. The assignment heuristic relies on four metrics: An embedding vector that describes the appearance of objects and can be used to re-identify them, a displacement vector that describes the object movement between two consecutive video frames, the Mahalanobis distance between the Kalman filter states and the new detections, and a class distance. These metrics are combined with a linear SVM, and then the assignment problem is solved by the Hungarian algorithm. We also propose an efficient CNN architecture that estimates these metrics. Our multi-frame model accepts two consecutive video frames which are processed individually in the backbone, and then optical flow is estimated on the resulting feature maps. This allows the network heads to estimate the displacement vectors. We evaluate our approach on the challenging BDD100K tracking dataset. Our multi-frame model achieves a good MOTA value of 39.1% with low localization error of 0.206 in MOTP. Our fast single-frame model achieves an even lower localization error of 0.202 in MOTP, and a MOTA value of 36.8%.

In this paper, we propose a Multiple Human Tracking method using multi-cues including Primitive Action Features (MHT-PAF). MHT-PAF can perform the accurate human tracking in dynamic aerial videos captured by a drone. PAF employs a global context, rich information by multi-label actions, and a middle level feature. The accurate human tracking result using PAF helps multi-frame-based action recognition. In the experiments, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed method using the Okutama-Action dataset. Our code is available online.

Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) is a long-standing task in computer vision. Current approaches based on the tracking by detection paradigm either require some sort of domain knowledge or supervision to associate data correctly into tracks. In this work, we present an unsupervised multiple object tracking approach based on visual features and minimum cost lifted multicuts. Our method is based on straight-forward spatio-temporal cues that can be extracted from neighboring frames in an image sequences without superivison. Clustering based on these cues enables us to learn the required appearance i…

Due to better video quality and higher frame rate, the performance of multiple object tracking issues has been greatly improved in recent years. However, in real application scenarios, camera motion and noisy per frame detection results degrade the performance of trackers significantly. High-speed and high-quality multiple object trackers are still in urgent demand. In this paper, we propose a new multiple object tracker following the popular tracking-by-detection scheme. We tackle the camera motion problem with an optical flow network and utilize an auxiliary tracker to deal with the missing …

Despite the great progress in video understanding made by deep convolutional neural networks, feature representation learned by existing methods may be biased to static visual cues. To address this issue, we propose a novel method to suppress static visual cues (SSVC) based on probabilistic analysis for self-supervised video representation learning. In our method, video frames are first encoded to obtain latent variables under standard normal distribution via normalizing flows. By modelling static factors in a video as a random variable, the conditional distribution of each latent variable bec…

Recent progress in multiple object tracking (MOT) has shown that a robust similarity score is key to the success of trackers. A good similarity score is expected to reflect multiple cues, e.g. appearance, location, and topology, over a long period of time. However, these cues are heterogeneous, making them hard to be combined in a unified network. As a result, existing methods usually encode them in separate networks or require a complex training approach. In this paper, we present a unified framework for similarity measurement which could simultaneously encode various cues and perform reasoni…

This paper introduces geometry and object shape and pose costs for multi-object tracking in urban driving scenarios. Using images from a monocular camera alone, we devise pairwise costs for object tracks, based on several 3D cues such as object pose, shape, and motion. The proposed costs are agnostic to the data association method and can be incorporated into any optimization framework to output the pairwise data associations. These costs are easy to implement, can be computed in real-time, and complement each other to account for possible errors in a tracking-by-detection framework. We perfor…
We introduce a prediction driven method for visual tracking and segmentation in videos. Instead of solely relying on matching with appearance cues for tracking, we build a predictive model which guides finding more accurate tracking regions efficiently. With the proposed prediction mechanism, we improve the model robustness against distractions and occlusions during tracking. We demonstrate significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods not only on visual tracking tasks (VOT 2016 and VOT 2018) but also on video segmentation datasets (DAVIS 2016 and DAVIS 2017).

We describe a target object with histogram of oriented gradients and raw color features, of which each one is characterized by a set of Boolean maps generated by uniformly thresholding their values. The Boolean maps effectively encode multi-scale connectivity cues of the target with different granularities. The fine-grained Boolean maps capture spatially structural details that are effective for precise target localization while the coarse-grained ones encode g…

Motion models play a great role in visual tracking applications for predicting the possible locations of objects in the next frame. Unlike target tracking in radar or aerospace domain which considers only points, object tracking in computer vision involves sizes of objects. Constant velocity motion model is the most widely used motion model for visual tracking, however, there is no clear and understandable derivation involving sizes of objects specially for new researchers joining this research field. In this document, we derive the constant velocity motion model that incorporates sizes of obj…

In this paper, visual tracking is empowered with wireless positioning to achieve high accuracy while maintaining robustness. Fundamentally different from the previous works, this study does not involve any specific wireless positioning algorithms. Instead, we use the confidence region derived from the wireless positioning Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) as the search region of visual trackers. The proposed framework is low-cost an…

Built upon their seminal work, there has been a plethora of recent improvements relying on convolutional neural network (CNN) pretrained on ImageNet as a feature extractor for visual tracking. However, most of their works relying on ad hoc analysis to design the weights for different layers either using boosting or hedging techniques as an ensemble tracker. In this paper, we go beyond the conventional DCF framework …

One of the major challenges of model-free visual tracking problem has been the difficulty originating from the unpredictable and drastic changes in the appearance of objects we target to track. Existing methods tackle this problem by updating the appearance model on-line in order to adapt to the changes in the appearance. Despite the success of these methods however, inaccurate and erroneous updates of the appearance model result in a tracker drift. In this paper, we introduce a novel real-time visual tracking algorithm based on a template selection strategy constructed by deep reinforcement l…
Most (3D) multi-object tracking methods rely on appearance-based cues for data association. By contrast, we investigate how far we can get by only encoding geometric relationships between objects in 3D space as cues for data-driven data association. We encode 3D detections as nodes in a graph, where spatial and temporal pairwise relations among objects are encoded via localized polar coordinates on graph edges. This representation makes our geometric relations invariant to global transformations and smooth trajectory changes, especially under non-holonomic motion. This allows our graph neural …

3D Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) has achieved tremendous achievement thanks to the rapid development of 3D object detection and 2D MOT. Recent advanced works generally employ a series of object attributes, e.g., position, size, velocity, and appearance, to provide the clues for the association in 3D MOT. However, these cues may not be reliable due to some visual noise, such as occlusion and blur, leading to tracking performance bottleneck. To reveal the dilemma, we conduct extensive empirical analysis to expose the key bottleneck of each clue and how they correlate with each other. The analysis …

In this work, we aim to deal with a more realistic problem of latency-aware tracking. Visual representation is crucial for a visual tracking method's performances. Conventionally, visual representations adopted in visual tracking rely on hand-crafted computer vision descriptors. These descriptors were developed generically without considering tracking-specific information. The deep slow local representations are learned offline on unlabeled data and transferred to the observational mode…

Second, when the appearance cue is unreliable, we comprehensively take motion cues, i.e., target and camera motions, into account to make the tracker …

Multiple object tracking is a challenging problem in computer vision due to difficulty in dealing with motion prediction, occlusion handling, and object re-identification. Many recent algorithms use motion and appearance cues to overcome these challenges. But using appearance cues increases the computation cost notably and therefore the speed of the algorithm decreases significantly which makes them inappropriate for online applications. In contrast, there are algorithms that only use motion cues to increase speed, especially for online applications. But these algorithms cannot handle occlusio…
