Voice-driven services (VDS) are being used in a variety of applications ranging from smart home control to payments using digital assistants. The input to such services is often captured via an open voice channel, e.g., using a microphone, in an unsupervised setting. One of the key operational security requirements in such setting is the freshness of the input speech. We present AEOLUS, a security overlay that proactively embeds a dynamic acoustic nonce at the time of user interaction, and detects the presence of the embedded nonce in the recorded speech to ensure freshness. We demonstrate that acoustic nonce can (i) be reliably embedded and retrieved, and (ii) be non-disruptive (and even imperceptible) to a VDS user. Optimal parameters (acoustic nonce's operating frequency, amplitude, and bitrate) are determined for (i) and (ii) from a practical perspective. Experimental results show that AEOLUS yields 0.5% FRR at 0% FAR for speech re-use prevention upto a distance of 4 meters in three real-world environments with different background noise levels. We also conduct a user study with 120 participants, which shows that the acoustic nonce does not degrade overall user experience for 94.16% of speech samples, on average, in these environments. AEOLUS can therefore be used in practice to prevent speech re-use and ensure the freshness of speech input.

With the development of smart devices, such as the Amazon Echo and Apple's HomePod, speech data have become a new dimension of big data. However, privacy and security concerns may hinder the collection and sharing of real-world speech data, which contain the speaker's identifiable information, i.e., voiceprint, which is considered a type of biometric identifier. Current studies on voiceprint privacy protection do not provide either a meaningful privacy-utility trade-off or a formal and rigorous definition of privacy. In this study, we design a novel and rigorous privacy metric for voiceprint p…

SpeechSplit can perform aspect-specific voice conversion by disentangling speech into content, rhythm, pitch, and timbre using multiple autoencoders in an unsupervised manner. However, SpeechSplit requires careful tuning of the autoencoder bottlenecks, which can be time-consuming and less robust. This paper proposes SpeechSplit 2.0, which constrains the information flow of the speech component to be disentangled on the autoencoder input using efficient signal processing methods instead of bottleneck tuning. Evaluation results show that SpeechSplit 2.0 achieves comparable performance to SpeechS…

We propose a neural text-to-speech (TTS) model that can imitate a new speaker's voice using only a small amount of speech sample. We demonstrate voice imitation using only a 6-seconds long speech sample without any other information such as transcripts. Our model also enables voice imitation instantly without additional training of the model. We implemented the voice imitating TTS model by combining a speaker embedder network with a state-of-the-art TTS model, Tacotron. The speaker embedder network takes a new speaker's speech sample and returns a speaker embedding. The speaker embedding with …

In most of practical scenarios, the announcement system must deliver speech messages in a noisy environment, in which the background noise cannot be cancelled out. The local noise reduces speech intelligibility and increases listening effort of the listener, hence hamper the effectiveness of announcement system. There has been reported that voices of professional announcers are clearer and more comprehensive than that of non-expert speakers in noisy environment. This finding suggests that the speech intelligibility might be related to the speaking style of professional announcer, which can be …

The goal of voice conversion is to transform source speech into a target voice, keeping the content unchanged. In this paper, we focus on self-supervised representation learning for voice conversion. Specifically, we compare discrete and soft speech units as input features. We find that discrete representations effectively remove speaker information but discard some linguistic content - leading to mispronunciations. As a solution, we propose soft speech units. To learn soft units, we predict a distribution over discrete speech units. By modeling uncertainty, soft units capture more content inf…

Custom voice, a specific text to speech (TTS) service in commercial speech platforms, aims to adapt a source TTS model to synthesize personal voice for a target speaker using few speech data. Custom voice presents two unique challenges for TTS adaptation: 1) to support diverse customers, the adaptation model needs to handle diverse acoustic conditions that could be very different from source speech data, and 2) to support a large number of customers, the adaptation parameters need to be small enough for each target speaker to reduce memory usage while maintaining high voice quality. In this wo…

This paper presents a novel framework to build a voice conversion (VC) system by learning from a text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system, that is called TTS-VC transfer learning. We first develop a multi-speaker speech synthesis system with sequence-to-sequence encoder-decoder architecture, where the encoder extracts robust linguistic representations of text, and the decoder, conditioned on target speaker embedding, takes the context vectors and the attention recurrent network cell output to generate target acoustic features. We take advantage of the fact that TTS system maps input text to speak…

Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis plays an important role in human-computer interaction. Currently, most TTS technologies focus on the naturalness of speech, namely, making the speeches sound like humans. However, the key tasks of the expression of emotion and the speaker identity are ignored, which limits the application scenarios of TTS synthesis technology. To make the synthesized speech more realistic and expand the application scenarios, we propose a multi-task anthropomorphic speech synthesis framework (MASS), which can synthesize speeches from text with specified emotion and speaker identit…
Translating imagined speech from human brain activity into voice is a challenging and absorbing research issue that can provide new means of human communication via brain signals. Endeavors toward reconstructing speech from brain activity have shown their potential using invasive measures of spoken speech data, however, have faced challenges in reconstructing imagined speech. In this paper, we propose NeuroTalk, which converts non-invasive brain signals of imagined speech into the user's own voice. Our model was trained with spoken speech EEG which was generalized to adapt to the domain of ima…

We present Deep Voice 3, a fully-convolutional attention-based neural text-to-speech (TTS) system. Deep Voice 3 matches state-of-the-art neural speech synthesis systems in naturalness while training ten times faster. We scale Deep Voice 3 to data set sizes unprecedented for TTS, training on more than eight hundred hours of audio from over two thousand speakers. In addition, we identify common error modes of attention-based speech synthesis networks, demonstrate how to mitigate them, and compare several different waveform synthesis methods. We also describe how to scale inference to ten million…
This paper introduces the Voices Obscured In Complex Environmental Settings (VOICES) corpus, a freely available dataset under Creative Commons BY 4.0. This dataset will promote speech and signal processing research of speech recorded by far-field microphones in noisy room conditions. Publicly available speech corpora are mostly composed of isolated speech at close-range microphony. A typical approach to better represent realistic scenarios, is to convolve clean speech with noise and simulated room response for model training. Despite these efforts, model performance degrades when tested agains…

In this paper we propose a new cross-lingual Voice Conversion (VC) approach which can generate all speech parameters (MCEP, LF0, BAP) from one DNN model using PPGs (Phonetic PosteriorGrams) extracted from inputted speech using several ASR acoustic models. Using the proposed VC method, we tried three different approaches to build a multilingual TTS system without recording a multilingual speech corpus. A listening test was carried out to evaluate both speech quality (naturalness) and voice similarity between converted speech and target speech. The results show that Approach 1 achieved the highe…

In smoking cessation clinical research and practice, objective validation of self-reported smoking status is crucial for ensuring the reliability of the primary outcome, that is, smoking abstinence. Speech signals convey important information about a speaker, such as age, gender, body size, emotional state, and health state. We investigated (1) if smoking could measurably alter voice features, (2) if smoking cessation could lead to changes in voice, and therefore (3) if the voice-based smoking status assessment has the potential to be used as an objective smoking cessation validation method.

This paper introduces a large-scale Korean speech dataset, called VOTE400, that can be used for analyzing and recognizing voices of the elderly people. The dataset includes about 300 hours of continuous dialog speech and 100 hours of read speech, both recorded by the elderly people aged 65 years or over. A preliminary experiment showed that speech recognition system trained with VOTE400 can outperform conventional systems in speech recognition of elderly people's voice. We present Translatotron 2, a neural direct speech-to-speech translation model that can be trained end-to-end. Translatotron 2 consists of a speech encoder, a linguistic decoder, an acoustic synthesizer, and a single attention module that connects them together. Experimental results on three datasets consistently show that Translatotron 2 outperforms the original Translatotron by a large margin on both translation quality (up to +15.5 BLEU) and speech generation quality, and approaches the same of cascade systems. In addition, we propose a simple method for preserving speakers' voices from the…
Thanks to improvements in machine learning techniques, including deep learning, speech synthesis is becoming a machine learning task. To accelerate speech synthesis research, we are developing Japanese voice corpora reasonably accessible from not only academic institutions but also commercial companies. In 2017, we released the JSUT corpus, which contains 10 hours of reading-style speech uttered by a single speaker, for end-to-end text-to-speech synthesis. For more general use in speech synthesis research, e.g., voice conversion and multi-speaker modeling, in this paper, we construct the JVS c…
Singing voice conversion is converting the timbre in the source singing to the target speaker's voice while keeping singing content the same. However, singing data for target speaker is much more difficult to collect compared with normal speech data.In this paper, we introduce a singing voice conversion algorithm that is capable of generating high quality target speaker's singing using only his/her normal speech data. First, we manage to integrate the training and conversion process of speech and singing into one framework by unifying the features used in standard speech synthesis system and s…

Voice-enabled interactions provide more human-like experiences in many popular IoT systems. Cloud-based speech analysis services extract useful information from voice input using speech recognition techniques. The voice signal is a rich resource that discloses several possible states of a speaker, such as emotional state, confidence and stress levels, physical condition, age, gender, and personal traits. Service providers can build a very accurate profile of a user's demographic category, personal preferences, and may compromise privacy. To address this problem, a privacy-preserving intermedia…

With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) technique, it's intuitive to construct a voice conversion system by cascading an ASR and TTS system. In this paper, we present a ASR-TTS method for voice conversion, which used iFLYTEK ASR engine to transcribe the source speech into text and a Transformer TTS model with WaveNet vocoder to synthesize the converted speech from the decoded text. For the TTS model, we proposed to use a prosody code to describe the prosody information other than text and speaker information contained in speech. A prosody e…
Voice cloning technologies have found applications in a variety of areas ranging from personalized speech interfaces to advertisement, robotics, and so on. Existing voice cloning systems are capable of learning speaker characteristics and use trained models to synthesize a person's voice from only a few audio samples. Advances in cloned speech generation technologies are capable of generating perceptually indistinguishable speech from a bona-fide speech. These advances pose new security and privacy threats to voice-driven interfaces and speech-based access control systems. The state-of-the-art…

Non-parallel many-to-many voice conversion is recently attract-ing huge research efforts in the speech processing community. A voice conversion system transforms an utterance of a source speaker to another utterance of a target speaker by keeping the content in the original utterance and replacing by the vocal features from the target speaker. Existing solutions, e.g., StarGAN-VC2, present promising results, only when speech corpus of the engaged speakers is available during model training. AUTOVCis able to perform voice conversion on unseen speakers, but it needs an external pretrained speake…
We propose a novel application based on acoustic-to-articulatory inversion towards quality assessment of voice converted speech. The ability of humans to speak effortlessly requires coordinated movements of various articulators, muscles, etc. This effortless movement contributes towards naturalness, intelligibility and speakers identity which is partially present in voice converted speech. Hence, during voice conversion, the information related to speech production is lost. In this paper, this loss is quantified for male voice, by showing increase in RMSE error for voice converted speech follo…
