Moiré superlattices - periodic orbital overlaps and lattice-reconstruction between sites of high atomic registry in vertically-stacked 2D layered materials - are quantum-active interfaces where non-trivial quantum phases on novel phenomena can emerge from geometric arrangements of 2D materials, which are not intrinsic to the parent materials. Unexpected distortions in band-structure and topology lead to long-range correlations, charge-ordering, and several other fascinating quantum phenomena hidden within the physical space between the (similar or dissimilar) parent materials. Stacking, twisting, gate-modulating, and optically-exciting these superlattices open up a new field for seamlessly exploring physics from the weak to strong correlations limit within a many-body and topological framework. It is impossible to capture it all, and the aim of this review is to highlight some of the important recent developments in synthesis, experiments, and potential applications of these materials.
The relative orientation (twist) of successive layers of stacked two-dimensional (2D) materials creates variations in the interlayer atomic registry. The variations often form a super lattice, called a moiré pattern, which can alter electronic properties. In this work we introduce a classification of the single-particle electronic structures that can occur in twisted stacks of 2D layers by characterizing them as "moiré molecules" or "moiré crystals". The molecules generate localized electronic states and moiré flat bands, while the crystals are sometimes unconventional and produce electronic b…
In van der Waals heterostructures, electronic bands of two-dimensional (2D) materials, their nontrivial topology, and electron-electron interactions can be dramatically changed by a moire pattern induced by twist angles between different layers. Such process is referred to as twistronics, where the tuning of twist angle can be realized through mechanical manipulation of 2D materials. Here we demonstrate an experimental technique that can achieve in situ dynamical rotation and manipulation of 2D materials in van der Waals heterostructures. Using this technique we fabricated heterostructures whe…
Moiré patterns made of two-dimensional (2D) materials represent highly tunable electronic Hamiltonians, allowing a wide range of quantum phases to emerge in a single material. Current modeling techniques for moiré electrons requires significant technical work specific to each material, impeding large-scale searches for useful moiré materials. In order to address this difficulty, we have developed a material-agnostic machine learning approach and test it here on prototypical one-dimensional (1D) moiré tight-binding models. We utilize the stacking dependence of the local density of states (SD-LD…
We present a quick and reliable method to cut 2D materials for creating 2D twisted heterostructures and devices. We demonstrate the effectiveness of using a tapered fibre scalped for cutting graphene. Electrical transport measurements show evidence of the desired twist between the graphene layers fabricated using our technique. Statistics of the number of successfully twisted stacks made using our method is compared with h-BN assisted tear-and-stack method. Also, our method can be used for twisted stack fabrication of materials that are few nanometers thick. Finally, we demonstrate the versati…
Interlayer rotation angle couples strongly to the electronic states of twisted van der Waals layers. However, not every angle is energetically favorable. Recent experiments on rotation-tunable electronics reveal the existence of a discrete set of angles at which the rotation-tunable electronics assume the most stable configurations. Nevertheless, a quantitative map for locating these intrinsically preferred twist angles in twisted bilayer system has not been available, posing challenges for the on-demand design of twisted electronics that are intrinsically stable at desired twist angles. Here …
The ability in experiments to control the relative twist angle between successive layers in two-dimensional (2D) materials offers a new approach to manipulating their electronic properties; we refer to this approach as "twistronics". A major challenge to theory is that, for arbitrary twist angles, the resulting structure involves incommensurate (aperiodic) 2D lattices. Here, we present a general method for the calculation of the electronic density of states of aperiodic 2D layered materials, using parameter-free hamiltonians derived from ab initio density-functional theory. We use graphene, a …

Twisted two-dimensional (2D) layered materials exhibit many novel and unique phenomena, such as insulation and superconductivity transition, and superlubricity. However, the effect of twisting on these phenomena remains unclear. A key challenge is the lack of linkage between the twisting and the material properties. Here, twisting induced moiré pattern is directly correlated with the configuration entropy of the bilayer graphene, based on which a new twisting phase transition in layered materials is uncovered. Most critically, the twisting phase transition is found size dependent. The diversit…
Twistronic assembly of 2D materials employs the twist angle between adjacent layers as a tuning parameter for designing the electronic and optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we study how interlayer hybridization, weak ferroelectric charge transfer between layers, and piezoelectric response to deformations set the valence and conduction band edges across the moir{é} supercell in twistronic homobilayers of MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We show that, due to the lack of inversion symmetry in the monolayer crystals, bilayers with parallel (P) and anti-parallel (AP)…
Twistronic heterostructures have recently emerged as a new class of quantum electronic materials with properties determined by the twist angle between the adjacent two-dimensional materials. Here we study moiré superlattice minibands in graphene (G) encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) with an almost perfect alignment with both the top and bottom hBN crystals. We show that, for such an orientation of the unit cells of the hBN layers that locally breaks inversion symmetry of the graphene lattice, the hBN/G/hBN structure features a Kagomé network of topologically protected chiral states…
Strong band engineering in two-dimensional (2D) materials can be achieved by introducing moiré superlattices, leading to the emergence of various novel quantum phases with promising potential for future applications. Presented works to create moiré patterns have been focused on a twist embedded inside channel materials or between channel and substrate. However, the effects of a twist inside the substrate materials on the unaligned channel materials are much less explored. In this work, we report the realization of superlattice multi-Dirac cones with the coexistence of the main Dirac cone in a …

The properties of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are drastically altered by a tunable moiré superlattice arising from periodic variations of atomic alignment between the layers. Exciton diffusion represents an important channel of energy transport in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). While early studies performed on TMD heterobilayers have suggested that carriers and excitons exhibit long diffusion lengths, a rich variety of scenarios can exist. In a moiré crystal with a large supercell size and deep potential, interlayer excitons may be completely localized. As the…
The sub-threshold swing is the fundamental critical parameter determining the operation of a transistor in low-power applications such as switches. It determines the fraction of dissipation due to the gate capacitance used for turning the device on and off, and in a conventional transistor it is limited by Boltzmann's tyranny to kTln(10)/q, or 60 mV per decade. Here, we demonstrate that the sub-threshold swing of a topological transistor, in which conduction is enabled by a topological phase transition via electric field switching, can be sizably reduced in a non-interacting system by modulati…
