We present time series analyses of three-decade long radio observations of the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+164 made at the University of Michigan Radio Astronomical Observatory operating at three central frequencies of 4.8 GHz, 8.0 GHz and 14.5 GHz. We detected a quasi-periodic oscillation of $\sim$965 days in all three frequency bands in the light curve of the effectively simultaneous observations, along with strong signals at $\sim$1950 d, $\sim$1350 d, and $\sim$660 d. The periodicity is analyzed with three methods: Data Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform, Generalized Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform. These methods are chosen as they have different analysis approaches toward robust measurement of claimed periodicities. The QPO at $965\pm 50$ days is found to be significant (at least $3.5σ$) and is persistent throughout the observation for all three radio frequencies, and the others, which may be harmonics, are comparably significant in at least the 8.0 GHz and 14.5 GHz bands. We briefly discuss plausible explanations for the origin of such long and persistent periodicity.
We reviewed multi-wavelength blazars variability and detection of quasi-periodic oscillations on intra-day timescales. The variability timescale from few minutes to up to less than a days is commonly known as intra-day variability. These fast variations are extremely useful to constrain the size of emitting region, black hole mass estimation, etc. It is noticed that in general blazars show intra-day variability in the complete electromagnetic spectrum. But some class of blazars either do not show or show very little intra-day variability in a specific band of electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars …
We examine the 2008-2016 gamma-ray and optical light curves of a number of bright Fermi blazars. In a fraction of them, the periodograms show possible evidence of quasi-periodicities related in the two bands. This coincidence strengthens their physical meaning. Comparing with results from the periodicity search of quasars, the presence of quasi-periodicities in blazars suggests that the basic condition for its observability is related to the relativistic jet in the observer direction, but the overall picture remains uncertain.
Evidence for the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the optical polarization of the blazar PKS 2155-304, during a period of enhanced gamma-ray brightness, is presented. The periodogram of the polarized flux revealed the existence of a prominent peak at $T\sim 13$ min, detected at >99.7% significance, and $T\sim 30$ min, which was nominally significant at >99%. This is the first evidence of QPOs in the polarization of an active galactic nucleus, potentially opening up a new avenue of studying this phenomenon.
Blazar variability may be driven by stochastic processes. On the other hand, quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) behaviors are recently reported to be detected in $\it{Fermi}$-LAT data of blazars. However, the significances of these QPO signals given by traditional Fourier-like methods are still questioned. We analyze $γ$-ray light curves of the QPO blazars with two Gaussian process methods, CARMA and $\it{celerite}$, to examine the appropriateness of Gaussian processes for characterizing $γ$-ray light curves of blazars and the existence of the reported QPOs. We collect a sample of 27 blazars wit…
Search for periodic signals from blazars has become widely discussed topic in recent years. In the scenario that such periodic changes originate from the innermost regions of blazars, the signals bear imprints of the processes occurring near the central engine, which is mostly inaccessible to our direct view. Such signals provide insights into various aspect of blazar studies including disk-jet connection, magnetic field configuration and, more importantly, strong gravity near the supermassive black holes and release of gravitational waves from the binary supermassive black hole systems. In th…
The search for periodic signals from blazars has become an actively pursued field of research in recent years. This is because periodic signals bring us information about the processes occurring near the innermost regions of blazars, which are mostly inaccessible to our direct view. Such signals provide insights into some of the extreme conditions that take place in the vicinity of supermassive black holes that lead to the launch of the relativistic jets. In addition, studies of characteristic timescales in blazar light curves shed light on some of the challenging issues in blazar physics that…
We examine the gamma-ray quasi-periodic variability of PKS 2155-304 with the latest publicly available \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data which covers the years from 2008 August to 2016 October. We produce the light curves in two ways, i.e., the exposure-weighted aperture photometry and the maximum likelihood optimization. The light curves are then analyzed by using Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ); and the results reveal a significant quasi-periodicity with a period of $1.74\pm0.13$ years and a significance of $\sim$ 4.9 $σ$. The constraint of multifrequencies q…
We report the detection of several quasi-periodicities around 0.6--2.5 days in the optical emission of the blazar S4 0954+658. The source was observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in six sectors and it showed these features in all but one of them, with a QPO of 1.52 days apparently present in portions of four of them. We used the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram method to search for significant signals and we confirmed them using a weighted wavelet transform for time-frequency domain analyses. We discuss several possible explanations for these rapid quasi-periodic va…
Since 2016 October, the active galaxy PKS 2247-131 has undergone a gamma-ray outburst, which we studied using data obtained with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The emission arises from a relativistic jet in PKS 2247-131, as an optical spectrum only shows a few weak absorption lines, typical of the BL Lacertae sub-class of the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. Here we report a ~34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the emission after the initial flux peak of the outburst. Compared to one-year time-scale QPOs, previously identified in blazars in Fermi energies, PKS 2247-131 ex…
The availability of about a decade of uninterrupted sky monitoring by the Fermi satellite has made possible to study long-term quasi-periodicities for high-energy sources. It is therefore not a surprise that for several blazars in the recent literature claims for such periodicities, with various level of confidence, have been reported. The confirmation of these findings could be of tremendous importance for the physical description of this category of sources and have consequences for the gravitational wave background interpretation. In this work we carry out a temporal analysis of the Fermi l…
We report our search for quasi-periodic signals in long-term optical and $γ$-ray data for the blazar PKS~1222+216, where the data are from the Steward Observatory blazar monitoring program and the all-sky survey with the Large Area Telescope onboard the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}, respectively. A quasi-periodic signal, with a period of $\simeq$420\,days and a significance of $>5σ$, is found in the measurements of the optical linear polarization degree for the source, while no similar signals are found in the optical and $γ$-ray light curves covering approximately the same time perio…
We detected a possible quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of ~ 71 days in the 0.1 -- 300 GeV gamma-ray Fermi-LAT light curve of the high redshift flat spectrum radio quasar B2 1520+31. We identify and confirm that quasi-period by Lomb Scargle periodogram (LSP), and weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ) analyses. Using this QPO period, and assuming it originates from accretion-disc fluctuations at the innermost stable circular orbit, we estimate the central supermassive black hole mass to range between ~ 5.4 * 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ for a non-rotating black hole and ~ 6.0 * 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ for a…
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) originating from innermost regions of blazars can provide unique perspective of some of the burning issues in blazar studies including disk-jet connection, launch of relativistic jets from the central engine, and other extreme conditions near the fast rotating supermassive black holes. However, a number of hurdles associated with searching QPOs in blazars e.g., red-noise dominance, modest significance of the detection and periodic modulation lasting for only a couple of cycles, make it difficult to estimate the true significance of the detection. In this work,…
We report a nominally high-confidence $γ$-ray quasi-periodic modulation in the blazar PKS 0301$-$243. For this target, we analyze its \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2017 May. Two techniques, i.e., the maximum likelihood optimization and the exposure-weighted aperture photometry, are used to build the $γ$-ray light curves. Then both the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform are applied to the light curves to search for period signals. A quasi-periodicity with a period of $2.1\pm0.3$ yr appears at the significance level of $\sim5σ$, although it …
Long-term gamma-ray variability of a non-blazar Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) PKS 0521-36 is investigated by using Fermi-LAT pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2021 March. The results show that the histogram of the gamma-ray fluxes follows a log-normal distribution. Interestingly, in the analysis of about 5.8-year (from MJD 56317 to 58447) LAT data between two outbursts (occurring during 2012 October and 2019 May respectively), a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with a period of about 1.1 years (about 5 sigma of significance) is found in the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), the Weighted W…
We report detection of a line-like feature in the $γ$-ray spectrum of the blazar B0516$-$621, for which the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope onboard {\it Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (Fermi)} are analyzed. The feature is at $\sim$7\,GeV and different analyses are conducted to check its real presence. We determine that it has a significance of 2.5--3.0$σ$, and cautiously note the presence of possible systematics in the data which could reduce the significance. This putative feature is too narrow to be explained with radiation processes generally considered for jet emission of blaz…
We present periodicity search analyses on the $γ$-ray lightcurve of the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089 observed by the \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope. We report the detection of two transient quasi-periodic oscillations: a 3.6-day QPO during the outburst in 2009 that lasted five cycles (MJD 54906--54923); and a periodicity of 92 days spanning over 650 days from 2018 to 2020 (MJD 58200--58850), which lasted for seven cycles. We employed the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, REDFIT, and the Monte Carlo lightcurve simulation techniques to find any periodicity and the correspon…
We have considered the \textit{Fermi} $γ$-ray light curve of the blazar PKS 0537-441 during a high state extending from 2008/08/10 to 2011/08/27. The periodogram exhibits a peak at T $\sim$ 280 d, with a significance of $\sim$ 99.7 \%. A peak of similar relevance at $\frac{1}{2}$ T is found in the optical light curves. Considering the entire duration of the \textit{ Fermi} light curve 2008-2015, no significant peak is revealed, while the optical one remains meaningful. Comparing with recent observations of PKS 2155-304 and PG 1553+113 it seems that month-year oscillations can characterize some…

Quasi-periodic fluctuations in the light curves of blazars can provide insight into the underlying emission process. This type of flux modulation hints at periodic physical processes that result in emission. CTA 102, a flat spectrum radio quasar at $z=1.032$, has displayed significant activity since 2016. The multi-waveband light curve of CTA 102 shows signs of quasi-periodic oscillations during the 2016-2017 flare. Our goal is to quantify the presence of any periodicity in the emitted flux during the mentioned period and to explore the causes that can give rise to it. Techniques such as the L…
We search for $γ$-ray and optical periodic modulations in a distant flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 0426-380 (the redshift $z=1.1$). Using two techniques (i.e., the maximum likelihood optimization and the exposure-weighted aperture photometry), we obtain $γ$-ray light curves from \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data covering from 2008 August to 2016 December. We then analyze the light curves with the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ). A $γ$-ray quasi-periodicity with a period of 3.35 $\pm$ 0.68 years is found at the significance-level of $\simeq3.6\ σ$. Th…
We present the results of a long-term periodicity search in a sample of $γ$-ray blazars within a multiwavelength context. These blazars have been selected from the Steward Observatory sample as part of its optical monitoring program between 2008 and 2018. We study 15 sources with a temporal coverage in their optical total and polarized emission sufficiently large ($>9$ years) to perform a reliable long-term periodicity analysis. We collect data from several observatories to extend the coverage, enabling the search of longer periods. In addition, data are also gathered in the high-energy ($E>10…
We searched for quasi-periodicities on year-like timescales in the light curves of 6 blazars in the optical - near infrared bands and we made a comparison with the high energy emission. We obtained optical/NIR light curves from REM photometry plus archival SMARTS data and we accessed the Fermi light curves for the $γ$-ray data. The periodograms often show strong peaks in the optical and gamma-ray bands, which in some cases may be inter-related. The significance of the revealed peaks is then discussed, taking into account that the noise is frequency dependent. Quasi-periodicities on a year-like…
We report on quasi-periodic variability found in two blazars included in the Steward Observatory Blazar Monitoring data sample: the BL Lac object 3C 66A and the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar B2 1633+38. We collect optical photometric and polarimetric data in V and R bands of these sources from different observatories: St. Petersburg University, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, WEBT-GASP, Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey, Steward Observatory, STELLA Robotic Observatory and Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope. In addition, an analysis of the $γ$-ray light curves from $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT is in…
The OVRO 40-m telescope has been monitoring the 15 GHz radio flux density of over 1200 blazars since 2008. The 15 GHz light curve of the flat spectrum radio quasar J1359+4011 shows a strong and persistent quasi-periodic oscillation. The time-scale of the oscillation varies between 120 and 150 days over a $\sim4$ year time span. We interpret this as the active galactic nucleus mass-scaled analog of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations from Galactic microquasars, or as evidence of modulation of the accretion flow by thermal instabilites in the "inner" accretion disc.
We report the detection of a probable $γ$-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of around 314 days in the monthly binned 0.1 -- 300 GeV $γ$-ray {\it Fermi}-LAT light curve of the well known BL Lac blazar OJ 287. To identify and quantify the QPO nature of the $γ$-ray light curve of OJ 287, we used the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), REDFIT, and weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ) analyses. We briefly discuss possible emission models for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) that can explain a $γ$-ray QPO of such a period in a blazar. Reports of changes in the position of quasi-stationary radio …
The variability of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 is studied using almost 10 years of optical, X-ray and gamma-rays data. Publicly available data have been gathered and analyzed with the aim to characterize the variability and to search for log-normality or periodic behavior. The optical and X-ray range follow a log-normal process; a hint for a periodicity of about 700 days is found in optical and in the high energy (100 MeV <E<300 GeV) range. A one zone, time-dependent, synchrotron self-Compton model is successfully used to reproduce the evolution with energy of the vari…
We describe a scenario to explain blazar periodicities with timescales of $\sim$ few years. The scenario is based on a binary super-massive black hole (SMBH) system in which one of the two SMBH carries a jet. We discuss the various mechanisms that can cause the jet to precess and produce corkscrew patterns through space with a scale of $\sim$ few pc. It turns out that the dominant mechanism responsible for the precession is simply the imprint of the jet-carrying SMBH orbital speed on the jet. Gravitational deflection and Lense-Thirring precession (due to the gravitational field of the other SM…
We present a long term optical $R$ band light curve analysis of the gravitationally lensed blazar AO 0235+164 in the time span 1982 - 2019. Several methods of analysis lead to the result that there is a periodicity of ~8.13 years present in these data. In addition, each of these five major flares are apparently double-peaked, with the secondary peak following the primary one by ~2 years. Along with the well known system, OJ 287, our finding constitutes one of the most secure cases of long term quasi-periodic optical behaviour in a blazar ever found. A binary supermassive black hole system appe…
We analyze the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of the historical light curve of FSRQs PKS 0405-385 detected by the Fermi LAT from August 2008 to November 2021. To identify and determine the QPO signal of PKS 0405-385 in the $γ$-ray light curve, we use four time series analysis techniques based on frequency and time domains, i.e., the Lomb-Scargle periodogram (LSP), the weighted wavelet z-transform (WWZ), the REDFIT and the epoch folding. The results show that PKS 0405-385 has a quasi-periodic behavior of $\sim$2.8 yr with the significance of $\sim$4.3$σ$ in Fermi long-term monitoring. Remarka…
We report the detection ($>4σ$) of a Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) in the $γ$-ray light curve of 3C 454.3 along with a simultaneous marginal QPO detection ($>2.4σ$) in the optical light curves. Periodic flux modulations were detected in both of these wavebands with a dominant period of $\sim 47$ days. The $γ$-ray QPO lasted for over 450 days (from MJD 56800 to 57250) resulting in over nine observed cycles which is among the highest number of periods ever detected in a blazar light curve. The optical light curve was not well sampled for almost half of the $γ$-ray QPO span due to the daytime …
In this work, we explore the long-term variability properties of the blazar PKS 0219-164 in the radio and the $γ$-ray regime, utilizing the OVRO 15 GHz and the \fermi/LAT observations from the period 2008--2017. We found that $γ$-ray emission is more variable than the radio emission implying that $γ$ ray emission possibly originated in more compact regions while the radio emission represented continuum emission from the large scale jets. Also, in $γ$-ray the source exhibited spectral variability characterized by the \emph{ softer-when-brighter} trend, a less frequently observed feature in the …
The mechanism for producing gamma-ray quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in blazar is unknown. One possibility is the geometric model, in which without the need for intrinsic quasi-periodic variation, the relativistic Doppler factor changes periodically, resulting in observed gamma-ray QPO. We propose a method to test this geometric model. We analyze the {\it Fermi}-LAT data of PG 1553+113 spanning from 2008 August until 2018 February. According to 29 four-month average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the energy range of 0.1-300 GeV, we split the {\it Fermi}-LAT energy range into three b…
We systematically search for quasiperiodic oscillatory (QPO) signals on the month timescale among the 1525 sources given in the Fermi Large Area Telescope Light Curve Repository. We find a transient QPO of 31.3$\pm$1.8 days in the gamma-ray band light curve of the TeV blazar S5 0716+714, which has seven cycles (MJD 55918-56137) for the first time by weighted wavelet Z-transform and Lomb-Scargle periodogram methods. Monte Carlo simulations based on the power spectral density and probability distribution function were used to evaluate the confidence level of the QPO, and the result is $\sim 4.1σ…
Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays undergo pair production with low energy photons of background radiation fields. This leads to an attenuation of the primary gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources in the interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL) which stretches from ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelengths. In the presence of magnetic fields, gamma-rays could oscillate into hypothetical axion-like particles (ALPs). This might lead to a reduced opacity of the Universe for VHE gamma-rays, as ALPs circumvent pair production. Here, the impact of photon-ALP conversions on the spectr…
