Feature selection is important in data representation and intelligent diagnosis. Elastic net is one of the most widely used feature selectors. However, the features selected are dependant on the training data, and their weights dedicated for regularized regression are irrelevant to their importance if used for feature ranking, that degrades the model interpretability and extension. In this study, an intuitive idea is put at the end of multiple times of data splitting and elastic net based feature selection. It concerns the frequency of selected features and uses the frequency as an indicator of feature importance. After features are sorted according to their frequency, linear support vector machine performs the classification in an incremental manner. At last, a compact subset of discriminative features is selected by comparing the prediction performance. Experimental results on breast cancer data sets (BCDR-F03, WDBC, GSE 10810, and GSE 15852) suggest that the proposed framework achieves competitive or superior performance to elastic net and with consistent selection of fewer features. How to further enhance its consistency on high-dimension small-sample-size data sets should be paid more attention in our future work. The proposed framework is accessible online (https://github.com/NicoYuCN/elasticnetFR).

Recent papers have shown that sufficiently overparameterized neural networks can perfectly fit even random labels. Thus, it is crucial to understand the underlying reason behind the generalization performance of a network on real-world data. In this work, we propose several measures to predict the generalization error of a network given the training data and its parameters. Using one of these measures, based on noise resilience of the network, we secured 5th position in the predicting generalization in deep learning (PGDL) competition at NeurIPS 2020.
Many current approaches to the design of intrusion detection systems apply feature selection in a static, non-adaptive fashion. These methods often neglect the dynamic nature of network data which requires to use adaptive feature selection techniques. In this paper, we present a simple technique based on incremental learning of support vector machines in order to rank the features in real time within a streaming model for network data. Some illustrative numerical experiments with two popular benchmark datasets show that our approach allows to adapt to the changes in normal network behaviour an…

The need for learning from unlabeled data is increasing in contemporary machine learning. Methods for unsupervised feature ranking, which identify the most important features in such data are thus gaining attention, and so are their applications in studying high throughput biological experiments or user bases for recommender systems. We propose FRANe (Feature Ranking via Attribute Networks), an unsupervised algorithm capable of finding key features in given unlabeled data set. FRANe is based on ideas from network reconstruction and network analysis. FRANe performs better than state-of-the-art …
Weight sharing has become a de facto standard in neural architecture search because it enables the search to be done on commodity hardware. However, recent works have empirically shown a ranking disorder between the performance of stand-alone architectures and that of the corresponding shared-weight networks. This violates the main assumption of weight-sharing NAS algorithms, thus limiting their effectiveness. We tackle this issue by proposing a regularization term that aims to maximize the correlation between the performance rankings of the shared-weight network and that of the standalone arc…
Multinomial Logit (MNL) is one of the most popular discrete choice models and has been widely used to model ranking data. However, there is a long-standing technical challenge of learning MNL from many real-world ranking data: exact calculation of the MNL likelihood of \emph{partial rankings} is generally intractable. In this work, we develop a scalable method for approximating the MNL likelihood of general partial rankings in polynomial time complexity. We also extend the proposed method to learn mixture of MNL. We demonstrate that the proposed methods are particularly helpful for application…

Recovering global rankings from pairwise comparisons has wide applications from time synchronization to sports team ranking. Pairwise comparisons corresponding to matches in a competition can be construed as edges in a directed graph (digraph), whose nodes represent e.g. competitors with an unknown rank. In this paper, we introduce neural networks into the ranking recovery problem by proposing the so-called GNNRank, a trainable GNN-based framework with digraph embedding. Moreover, new objectives are devised to encode ranking upsets/violations. The framework involves a ranking score estimation …

We address the weakly supervised video highlight detection problem for learning to detect segments that are more attractive in training videos given their video event label but without expensive supervision of manually annotating highlight segments. While manually averting localizing highlight segments, weakly supervised modeling is challenging, as a video in our daily life could contain highlight segments with multiple event types, e.g., skiing and surfing. In this work, we propose casting weakly supervised video highlight detection modeling for a given specific event as a multiple instance r…

The abundance of information in web applications make recommendation essential for users as well as applications. Despite the effectiveness of existing recommender systems, we find two major limitations that reduce their overall performance: (1) inability to provide timely recommendations for both new and existing users by considering the dynamic nature of user preferences, and (2) not fully optimized for the ranking task when using implicit feedback. Therefore, we propose a novel deep learning based unified cross-network solution to mitigate cold-start and data sparsity issues and provide tim…

In artificial neural networks, understanding the contributions of input features on the prediction fosters model explainability and delivers relevant information about the dataset. While typical setups for feature importance ranking assess input features individually, in this study, we go one step further and rank the importance of groups of features, denoted as feature-blocks. A feature-block can contain features of a specific type or features derived from a particular source, which are presented to the neural network in separate input branches (multiblock ANNs). This work presents three meth…
Several tasks in machine learning are evaluated using non-differentiable metrics such as mean average precision or Spearman correlation. However, their non-differentiability prevents from using them as objective functions in a learning framework. Surrogate and relaxation methods exist but tend to be specific to a given metric. In the present work, we introduce a new method to learn approximations of such non-differentiable objective functions. Our approach is based on a deep architecture that approximates the sorting of arbitrary sets of scores. It is trained virtually for free using synthetic…

Empirical data on real complex systems are becoming increasingly available. Parallel to this is the need for new methods of reconstructing (inferring) the topology of networks from time-resolved observations of their node-dynamics. The methods based on physical insights often rely on strong assumptions about the properties and dynamics of the scrutinized network. Here, we use the insights from machine learning to design a new method of network reconstruction that essentially makes no such assumptions. Specifically, we interpret the available trajectories (data) as features, and use two indepen…

Due to the advantage of achieving a better performance under weak regularization, elastic net has attracted wide attention in statistics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and other fields. In particular, a variation of the elastic net, adaptive elastic net (AEN), integrates the adaptive grouping effect. In this paper, we aim to develop a new algorithm: Adaptive Elastic Net with Conditional Mutual Information (AEN-CMI) that further improves AEN by incorporating conditional mutual information into the gene selection process. We apply this new algorithm to screen significant genes for two kinds …
