Interacting single-level quantum dot connected to BCS superconducting leads represents a well-controllable system to study the interplay between the correlation effects and the electron pairing that can result in a $0-π$ (singlet-doublet) quantum phase transition. The physics of this system can be well described by the impurity Anderson model. We present an analysis of the statistics of the perturbation expansion order of the continuous-time hybridization expansion quantum Monte Carlo algorithm in the vicinity of such a first-order impurity quantum phase transition. By calculating the moments of the histograms of the expansion order which deviate from the ideal Gaussian shape, we provide an insight into the thermodynamic mixing of the two phases at low but finite temperatures which is reflected in the bimodal nature of the histograms.
We report a detailed analytic investigation of the interplay between size quantization and local scattering centers in armchair graphene nanoribbons, as seen in the conductance. The scattering property of a local scattering center is dependent on if it is located on one sublattice (A-site impurity) or both (impurity situated at neighboring carbon atoms, A-B-site impurity). The A-site impurity scatters in a similar way as a localized impurity in a one-dimensional channel made from a two-dimensional electron gas. On the other hand, the A-B-site impurity introduces A- to B-sublattice scattering, …
We report a detailed investigation of the interplay between size quantization and local scattering centers in graphene nanoribbons, as seen in the local density of states. The spectral signatures, obtained after Fourier transformation of the local density of states, include characteristic peaks that can be related to the transverse modes of the nanoribbon. In armchair ribbons, the Fourier transformed density of states of one of the two inequivalent sublattices takes a form similar to that of a quantum channel in a two-dimensional electron gas, modified according to the differences in bandstruc…
We analyze the full counting statistics of a multiorbital Kondo effect in a quantum dotwith the SU(N) symmetry in the framework of the renormalized perturbation theory. The current probability distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary dot-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ in the particle-hole symmetric case. The resulting cumulant up to the leading nonlinear term of applied bias voltages indicates two types of electron transfer, respectively carrying charge $e$ and $2e$, with different $N$-dependences. The cross correlation between different orbital currents shows exponential enhancement w…
We study non-equilibrium current fluctuations through a quantum dot, which includes a ferromagnetic Hund's rule coupling $J$, in the low-energy Fermi liquid regime using the renormalized perturbation theory. The resulting cumulant for the current distribution in the particle-hole symmetric case, shows that spin-triplet and spin-singlet pairs of quasiparticles are formed in the current due to the Hund's rule coupling and these pairs enhance the current fluctuations. In the fully screened higher-spin Kondo limit, the Fano factor takes a value $F_b = (9M+6)/ (5M+4)$ determined by the orbital dege…
We analyse the full counting statistics (FCS) of the charge transport through the Anderson impurity model (AIM) and similar systems with a single conducting channel. The object of principal interest is the generating function for the cumulants of charge current distribution. We derive an exact analytic formula relating the FCS generating function to the self energy of the system in the presence of the measuring field. We first check that our approach reproduces correctly known results in simple limits, like the FCS of the resonant level system (AIM without Coulomb interaction). We then proceed…
We show that the macroscopic current and charge can be formulated as a Quantum Mechanical zero mode problem. We find that the current is given by the velocity operator of a particle restricted to move around a circle. As an explicit example we investigate a Luttinger liquid of length $L$ which is perturbed by a time dependent impurity. Using the statistical mechanics of zero modes we computed the non-equilibrium current. In particular we show that in the low temperature limit, $L_T/L>1$, the zero mode method introduced here becomes essential for computing the current.
The time dependent full counting statistics of charge transport through an interacting quantum junction is evaluated from its generating function, controllably computed with the inchworm Monte Carlo method. Exact noninteracting results are reproduced; then, we continue to explore the effect of electron--electron interactions on the time-dependent charge cumulants, first-passage time distributions and $n$-electron transfer distributions. We observe a crossover in the noise from Coulomb blockade- to Kondo-dominated physics as the temperature is decreased. In addition, we uncover long-tailed spin…
We consider the quench of an atomic impurity via a single Rydberg excitation in a degenerate Fermi gas. The Rydberg interaction with the background gas particles induces an ultralong-range potential that binds particles to form dimers, trimers, tetramers, etc. Such oligomeric molecules were recently observed in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In this work, we demonstrate with a functional determinant approach that quantum statistics and fluctuations have observable spectral consequences. We show that the occupation of molecular states is predicated on the Fermi statistics, which suppresses m…
The elementary excitations of a fractional quantum Hall liquid are quasiparticles or quasiholes which are neither bosons nor fermions, but so-called anyons. Here we study impurity particles immersed in a quantum Hall liquid which bind to the quasiholes via repulsive interactions with the liquid. We show that the angular momentum of an impurity is given by the multiple of a fractional "quantum" of angular momentum, and can directly be observed from the impurity density. In a system with several impurities bound to quasiholes, their total angular momentum interpolates between the values for free…

The full counting statistics for the charge transport through an undoped graphene sheet in the presence of strong potential impurities is studied. Treating the scattering off the impurity in the s-wave approximation, we calculate the impurity correction to the cumulant generating function. This correction is universal provided the impurity strength is tuned to a resonant value. In particular, the conductance of the sample acquires a correction of 16e^2/(pi^2 h) per resonant impurity.
One of the hallmarks of quantum statistics, tightly entwined with the concept of topological phases of matter, is the prediction of anyons. Although anyons are predicted to be realized in certain fractional quantum Hall systems, they have not yet been unambiguously detected in experiment. Here we introduce a simple quantum impurity model, where bosonic or fermionic impurities turn into anyons as a consequence of their interaction with the surrounding many-particle bath. A cloud of phonons dresses each impurity in such a way that it effectively attaches fluxes/vortices to it and thereby convert…
Recent experimental realization of strongly imbalanced mixtures of ultracold atoms opens new possibilities for studying impurity dynamics in a controlled setting. We discuss how the techniques of atomic physics can be used to explore new regimes and manifestations of Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe (OC), which could not be accessed in solid state systems. We consider a system of impurity atoms localized by a strong optical lattice potential and immersed in a sea of itinerant Fermi atoms. Ramsey interference experiments with impurity atoms probe OC in the time domain, while radio-frequency…
We propose to investigate the full counting statistics of nonequilibrium spin transport with an ultracold atomic quantum gas. The setup makes use of the spin control available in atomic systems to generate spin transport induced by an impurity atom immersed in a spin-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. In contrast to solid-state realizations, in ultracold atoms spin relaxation and the decoherence from external sources is largely suppressed. As a consequence, once the spin current is turned off by manipulating the internal spin degrees of freedom of the Fermi system, the nonequilibrium spin pop…
We study the statistics of charge transfer through an impurity in a chiral Luttinger liquid (realized experimentally as a quantum point contact in a fractional quantum Hall edge state device). Taking advantage of the integrability we present a procedure for obtaining the cumulant generating function of the probability distribution to transfer a fixed amount of charge through the constriction. Using this approach we analyze in detail the behaviour of the third cumulant C_3 as a function of applied voltage, temperature and barrier height. We predict that C_3 can be used to measure the fractional…
Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function, and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landa…
We present a method for calculating the full counting statistics of a nonequilibrium quantum system based on the propagator noncrossing approximation (NCA). This numerically inexpensive method can provide higher order cumulants for extended parameter regimes, rendering it attractive for a wide variety of purposes. We compare NCA results to Born-Markov quantum master equations (QME) results to show that they can access different physics, and to numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte-Carlo data to assess their validity. As a demonstration of its power, the NCA method is employed to study the i…
We study various geometrical aspects of the propagation of particles obeying fractional statistics in the physical setting of the quantum Hall system. We find a discrete set of zeros for the two-particle kernel in the lowest Landau level; these arise from a combination of a two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect and the exchange phase related to fractional statistics. The kernel also shows short distance exclusion statistics, for instance, in a power law behavior as a function of initial and final positions of the particles. We employ the one-particle kernel to compute impurity-mediated tunneling a…
We develop a general approach to nonequilibrium nanostructures formed by one-dimensional channels coupled by tunnel junctions and/or by impurity scattering. The formalism is based on nonequilibrium version of functional bosonization. A central role in this approach is played by the Keldysh action that has a form reminiscent of the theory of full counting statistics. To proceed with evaluation of physical observables, we assume the weak-tunneling regime and develop a real-time instanton method. A detailed exposition of the formalism is supplemented by two important applications: (i) tunneling i…
Particle-based ensemble semi-classical Monte Carlo (MC) methods employ quantum corrections (QCs) to address quantum confinement and degenerate carrier populations to model tomorrow's ultra-scaled MOSFETs. Here we present new approaches to quantum confinement and carrier degeneracy effects in a three-dimensional (3D) MC device simulator, and illustrate their significance through simulation of n-channel Si and III-V FinFETs. Original contributions include our treatment of far-from-equilibrium degenerate statistics and QC-based modeling of surface-roughness scattering, as well as considering quan…
We study the statistics of thermal energy transfer in the nonequilibrium (two-bath) spin-boson model. This quantum many-body impurity system serves as a canonical model for quantum energy transport. Our method makes use of the Majorana fermion representation for the spin operators, in combination with the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function approach. We derive an analytical expression for the cumulant generating function of the model in the steady state limit, and show that it satisfies the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation symmetry. We obtain analytical expressions for the heat current and its…
We apply a recently developed 1/(N-1) expansion to the full counting statistics for the N-fold degenerate Anderson impurity model in the Kondo regime. This approach is based on the perturbation theory in the Coulomb interaction U and is different from the conventional large N theories, such as the usual 1/N expansion and non-crossing approximation. We have confirmed that the calculations carried out up to order 1/(N-1)^2 agree closely with those of the numerical renormalization group at N=4, where the degeneracy is still not so large. This ensures the applicability of our approach for N>4. We …
We demonstrate that identical impurities immersed in a two-dimensional many-particle bath can be viewed as flux-tube-charged-particle composites described by fractional statistics. In particular, we find that the bath manifests itself as an external magnetic flux tube with respect to the impurities, and hence the time-reversal symmetry is broken for the effective Hamiltonian describing the impurities. The emerging flux tube acts as a statistical gauge field after a certain critical coupling. This critical coupling corresponds to the intersection point between the quasiparticle state and the ph…
A local impurity usually only strongly affects few single-particle energy levels, thus cannot induce a quantum phase transition (QPT), or any macroscopic quantum phenomena in a many-body system within the Hermitian regime. However, it may happen for a non-Hermitian impurity. We investigate the many-body ground state property of a one-dimensional tight-binding ring with an embedded single asymmetrical dimer based on exact solutions. We introduce the concept of semi-localization state to describe a new quantum phase, which is a crossover from extended to localized state. The peculiar feature is …
