We study the implications of the anyon fusion equation $a\times b=c$ on global properties of $2+1$D topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). Here $a$ and $b$ are anyons that fuse together to give a unique anyon, $c$. As is well known, when at least one of $a$ and $b$ is abelian, such equations describe aspects of the one-form symmetry of the theory. When $a$ and $b$ are non-abelian, the most obvious way such fusions arise is when a TQFT can be resolved into a product of TQFTs with trivial mutual braiding, and $a$ and $b$ lie in separate factors. More generally, we argue that the appearance of such fusions for non-abelian $a$ and $b$ can also be an indication of zero-form symmetries in a TQFT, of what we term "quasi-zero-form symmetries" (as in the case of discrete gauge theories based on the largest Mathieu group, $M_{24}$), or of the existence of non-modular fusion subcategories. We study these ideas in a variety of TQFT settings from (twisted and untwisted) discrete gauge theories to Chern-Simons theories based on continuous gauge groups and related cosets. Along the way, we prove various useful theorems.
We study Galois actions on $2+1$D topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), characterizing their interplay with theory factorization, gauging, the structure of gapped boundaries and dualities, 0-form symmetries, 1-form symmetries, and 2-groups. In order to gain a better physical understanding of Galois actions, we prove sufficient conditions for the preservation of unitarity. We then map out the Galois orbits of various classes of unitary TQFTs. The simplest such orbits are trivial (e.g., as in various theories of physical interest like the Toric Code, Double Semion, and 3-Fermion Model), an…
Symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) are short-range entangled gapped states protected by global symmetry. Nontrivial SPT phases cannot be adiabatically connected to the trivial disordered state(or atomic insulator) as long as certain global symmetry $G$ is unbroken. At low energies, most of two-dimensional SPTs with Abelian symmetry can be described by topological quantum field theory (TQFT) of multi-component Chern-Simons type. However, in contrast to the fractional quantum Hall effect where TQFT can give rise to interesting bulk anyons, TQFT for SPTs only supports trivial bulk excita…
Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) pertinent to some emergent low energy phenomena of condensed matter lattice models in 2+1 and 3+1D are explored. Many of our field theories are highly-interacting without free quadratic analogs. Some of our bosonic TQFTs can be regarded as the continuum field theory formulation of Dijkgraaf-Witten twisted discrete gauge theories. Other bosonic TQFTs beyond the Dijkgraaf-Witten description and all fermionic spin TQFTs are either higher-form gauge theories where particles must have strings attached, or fermionic discrete gauge theories obtained by gaugi…
We study 3d and 4d systems with a one-form global symmetry, explore their consequences, and analyze their gauging. For simplicity, we focus on $\mathbb{Z}_N$ one-form symmetries. A 3d topological quantum field theory (TQFT) $\mathcal{T}$ with such a symmetry has $N$ special lines that generate it. The braiding of these lines and their spins are characterized by a single integer $p$ modulo $2N$. Surprisingly, if $\gcd(N,p)=1$ the TQFT factorizes $\mathcal{T}=\mathcal{T}'\otimes \mathcal{A}^{N,p}$. Here $\mathcal{T}'$ is a decoupled TQFT, whose lines are neutral under the global symmetry and $\m…
We consider a generalization of the axioms of a TQFT, so called half-projective TQFT's, with an anomaly, $x^μ$, in the composition law. $μ$ is a coboundary on the cobordism categories with non-negative, integer values. The element $x$ of the ring over which the TQFT is defined does not have to be invertible. In particular, it may be 0. This modification makes it possible to extend quantum-invariants, which vanish on $S^1\times S^2$, to non-trivial TQFT's. (A TQFT in the sense of Atiyah with this property has to be trivial all together). Under a few natural assumptions the notion of a half-proj…
We construct a new class of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (3d TQFTs) by considering generalized Argyres-Douglas theories on $S^1 \times M_3$ with a non-trivial holonomy of a discrete global symmetry along the $S^1$. For the minimal choice of the holonomy, the resulting 3d TQFTs are non-unitary and semisimple, thus distinguishing themselves from theories of Chern-Simons and Rozansky-Witten types respectively. Changing the holonomy performs a Galois transformation on the TQFT, which can sometimes give rise to more familiar unitary theories such as the $(G_2)_1$ and $(F_4)_…
The constraints of $BF$ topological gauge theories are used to construct Hamiltonians which are anti-commutators of the BRST and anti-BRST operators. Such Hamiltonians are a signature of Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFT's). By construction, both classes of topological field theories share the same phase spaces and constraints. We find that, for 2+1 and 1+1 dimensional space-times foliated as $M=Σ\times\IR$, a homomorphism exists between the constraint algebras of our TQFT and those of canonical gravity. The metrics on the two-dimensional hypersurfaces are also obtained.
We derive a canonical form for 2-group gauge theory in 3+1D which shows they are either equivalent to Dijkgraaf-Witten theory or to the so-called "EF1" topological order of Lan-Wen. According to that classification, recently argued from a different point of view by Johnson-Freyd, this amounts to a very large class of all 3+1D TQFTs. We use this canonical form to compute all possible anomalies of 2-group gauge theory which may occur without spontaneous symmetry breaking, providing a converse of the recent symmetry-enforced-gaplessness constraints of Córdova-Ohmori and also uncovering some possi…
We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their g…
We consider the 4d superconformal index for ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theories on $S^1 \times L(r,1)$, where $L(r,1)$ is a Lens space. We focus on a one-parameter slice of the three-dimensional fugacity space and in that sector we show S-duality. We do so by rewriting the index in a way that resembles a correlation function of a 2d TFT, which however, we do not identify.
In this short paper, we argue that the chiral central charge $c_-$ of a (2+1)d topological ordered state is sometimes strongly constrained by 't Hooft anomaly of anti-unitary global symmetry. For example, if a (2+1)d fermionic TQFT has a time reversal anomaly with $T^2=(-1)^F$ labeled as $ν\in\mathbb{Z}_{16}$, the TQFT must have $c_-=1/4$ mod $1/2$ for odd $ν$, while $c_-=0$ mod $1/2$ for even $ν$. This generalizes the fact that the bosonic TQFT with $T$ anomaly in a particular class must carry $c_-=4$ mod $8$ to fermionic cases. We also study such a constraint for fermionic TQFT with $U(1)\ti…
We perform a study of time reversal symmetry of abelian anyons $\mathcal{A}$ in 2+1 dimensions, in the spin structure independent cases. We will find the importance of the group $\mathcal{C}$ of time-reversal-symmetric anyons modulo anyons composed from an anyon and its time reversal. Possible choices of local Kramers degeneracy are given by quadratic refinements of the braiding phases of $\mathcal{C}$, and the anomaly is then given by the Arf invariant of the chosen quadratic refinement. We also give a concrete study of the cases when $|\mathcal{A}|$ is odd or $\mathcal{A}=(\mathbb{Z}_2)^N$.
We consider a class of quantum field theories and quantum mechanics, which we couple to $\mathbb Z_N$ topological QFTs, in order to classify non-perturbative effects in the original theory. The $\mathbb Z_N$ TQFT structure arises naturally from turning on a classical background field for a $\mathbb Z_N$ 0- or 1-form global symmetry. In $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory coupled to $\mathbb Z_N$ TQFT, the non-perturbative expansion parameter is $\exp[-S_I/N]= \exp[-{8 π^2}/{g^2N}]$ both in the semi-classical weak coupling domain and strong coupling domain, corresponding to a fractional topological charg…

The non-perturbative validity of covariant BRST-quantization of gauge theories on compact Euclidean space-time manifolds is reviewed. BRST-quantization is related to the construction of a Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) of Witten type on the gauge group. The criterion for the non-perturbative validity of the quantization is that the partition function of the corresponding TQFT does not vanish and that its (equivariant) BRST-algebra is free of anomalies. I sketch the construction of a TQFT whose partition function is proportional to the generalized Euler-characteristic of the coset spac…
Evaluating the propagator by the usual time-sliced manner, we use it to compute the second virial coefficient of an anyon gas interacting through the repulsive potential of the form $g/r^2 (g > 0)$. All the cusps for the unpolarized spin-1/2 as well as spinless cases disappear in the $ω\to 0$ limit, where $ω$ is a frequency of harmonic oscillator which is introduced as a regularization method. As $g$ approaches to zero, the result reduces to the noninteracting hard-core limit.
We study the effect of a Chern-Simons term in a theory with discrete gauge group H, which in (2+1)-dimensional space time describes (non-abelian) anyons. As in a previous paper, we emphasize the underlying algebraic structure, namely the Hopf algebra D(H). We argue on physical grounds that the addition of a Chern-Simons term in the action leads to a non-trivial 3-cocycle on D(H). Accordingly, the physically inequivalent models are labelled by the elements of the cohomology group H^3(H,U(1)). It depends periodically on the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term which model is realized. This estab…
This short note was born out of discussions on anyons in the FQHE at the YITP workshop "Fundamental problems of quantum field theories" (December 19-21, 2001, YITP, Kyoto). At that time, I felt that there might not be a sound consensus of opinion on the subject. Now, I would like to show my understanding here, the essential part of which is based on hep-th/0110197. The first problem discussed is a notion of ``bosonized electrons (bosonization)", which are unphysical objects from the standpoint of the Chern-Simons gauge invariance. Therefore, their condensate is merely of mathematical concept a…
