The study of neutrino flavour oscillations in astrophysical sources has been boosted in the last two decades thanks to achievements in experimental neutrino physics and observational astronomy. We here discuss two cases of interest in the modelling of short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs): hypercritical, i.e. highly super-Eddington spherical/disk accretion onto a neutron star (NS)/black hole (BH). We show that in both systems the ambient conditions of density and temperature imply the occurrence of neutrino flavour oscillations, with a relevant role of neutrino self-interactions.
Recent measurements of the Kerr parameters of the black holes in M33 X-7 and LMC X-1 yield a*=0.84\pm0.05 and a*=0.90^{+.04}_{-.09} respectively. We study massive binary evolution scenarios that can reproduce such high values for the Kerr parameters. We first discuss a model with Case C mass transfer leading to a common envelope and tidal synchronization of the primary before it collapses into a black hole. We also study a Case M evolution model (which involves tidally-locked, rotationally-mixed, chemically-homogeneous stars in a close binary). Our analysis suggests that, regardless of the spe…
Recent observations of AdLIGO and Virgo have shown that the spin measurements in binary black hole (BH) systems are typically small, which is consistent with the predictions by the classical isolated binary evolution channel. In this standard formation channel, the progenitor of the first-born BH is assumed to have efficient angular momentum transport. The BH spins in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), however, have been found consistently to be extremely high. In order to explain the high BH spins, the inefficient angular momentum transport inside the BH progenitor is required. This requiremen…
The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm explains a class of energetic, $E_{\rm iso}\gtrsim 10^{52}$~erg, long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with Ic supernovae, recently named binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe). The progenitor is a tight binary system formed of a carbon-oxygen (CO) core and a neutron star companion. The supernova ejecta of the exploding CO core triggers a hypercritical accretion process onto the neutron star, which reaches in a few seconds the critical mass, and gravitationally collapses to a black hole emitting a GRB. In our previous simulations of this p…
The measurement of the period and period derivative, and the canonical model of dipole radiation have provided a method to estimate the low superficial magnetic fields in the so-called Central Compact Objects (CCOs). In the present work, a scenario is introduced in order to explain the magnetic behavior of such CCOs. Based on magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the post core-collapse supernova phase during the hypercritical accretion episode, we argue that the magnetic field of a newborn neutron star could have been early buried. During this phase, thermal neutrinos are created mainly by the pa…
Cassiopeia A the youngest supernova remnant known in the Milky Way is one of the brightest radio sources in the sky and a unique laboratory for supernova physics. Although its compact remnant was discovered in 1999 by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, nowadays it is widely accepted that a neutron star lies in the center of this supernova remnant. In addition, new observations suggest that such neutron star with a low magnetic field and evidence of a carbon atmosphere could have suffered a hypercritical accretion phase seconds after the explosion. Considering this hypercritical accretion episode, …
The properties of a new-born neutron star, produced in a core-collapse supernova, can be strongly affected by the possible late fallback which occurs several hours after the explosion. This accretion occurs in the regime dominated by neutrino cooling, explored initially in this context by Chevalier (1989). Here we revisit this approach in a 1D spherically symmetric model and carry out numerical simulations in 2D in an accretion column onto a neutron star considering detailed microphysics, neutrino cooling and the presence of magnetic fields in ideal MHD. We compare our numerical results to the…
We present magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of the late post-supernova hypercritical accretion to understand its effect on the magnetic field of the new-born neutron star. We consider as an example the case of a magnetic field loop protruding from the star's surface. The accreting matter is assumed to be non magnetized and, due to the high accretion rate, matter pressure dominates over magnetic pressure. We find that an accretion envelope develops very rapidly and once it becomes convectively stable the magnetic field is easily buried and pushed into the newly forming neutron star cru…
Recent X-ray observations in the central compact remnant of Puppis A and other young pulsars have provided convincing evidence about the anti-magnetar nature of the so-called central compact objects (CCOs). The measured period derivative, corrected by the proper movement, provides exceptionally low superficial magnetic fields for such sources. Using the dipole radiation canonical model, the superficial magnetic field of the CCO (RX J0822-4300) in Puppis A was estimated to be $B\simeq 2.9 \times 10^{10}$ G. In this paper, we present a numerical model to interpret the unusual magnetic-field beha…
The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm has been successfully applied to the explanation of the concomitance of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with supernovae (SNe) Ic. The progenitor is a tight binary system composed by a carbon-oxygen (CO) core and a neutron star (NS) companion. The explosion of the SN leads to hypercritical accretion onto the NS companion which reaches the critical mass, hence inducing its gravitational collapse to a black hole (BH) with consequent emission of the GRB. The first estimates of this process were based on a simplified model of the binary parameters and the B…

We present magnetohydrodynamical simulations of a strong accretion onto magnetized proto-neutron stars for the Kesteven 79 (Kes 79) scenario. The supernova remnant Kes 79, observed with the Chandra ACIS-I instrument during approximately 8.3 h, is located in the constellation Aquila at a distance of 7.1 kpc in the galactic plane. It is a galactic and a very young object with an estimate age of 6 kyr. The Chandra image has revealed, for the first time, a point-like source at the center of the remnant. The Kes 79 compact remnant belongs to a special class of objects, the so-called Central Compact…
Following the induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with type Ib/c supernovae, we present numerical simulations of the explosion of a carbon-oxygen (CO) core in a binary system with a neutron-star (NS) companion. The supernova ejecta trigger a \emph{hypercritical} accretion process onto the NS thanks to a copious neutrino emission and the trapping of photons within the accretion flow. We show that temperatures 1--10~MeV develop near the NS surface, hence electron-positron annihilation into neutrinos becomes the main cooling channel leading to accre…
The neutrino signal from SN1987A confirmed the core-collapse scenario and the possible formation of a neutron star. Although this compact object has eluded all observations, theoretical and numerical developments have allowed a glimpse of the fate of it. In particular, a hypercritical accretion model has been proposed to forecast the accretion of $\sim 0.15 \:\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ in two hours and the subsequent submergence of the magnetic field in the newborn neutron star. In this paper, we revisit the Chevalier's model in a numerical framework, focusing on the neutrino cooling effect on the su…
In the binary-driven hypernova model of long gamma-ray bursts, a carbon-oxygen star explodes as a supernova in presence of a neutron star binary companion in close orbit. Hypercritical (i.e. highly super-Eddington) accretion of the ejecta matter onto the neutron star sets in, making it reach the critical mass with consequent formation of a Kerr black hole. We have recently shown that, during the accretion process onto the neutron star, fast neutrino flavour oscillations occur. Numerical simulations of the above system show that a part of the ejecta keeps bound to the newborn Kerr black hole, l…
The central engine of Gamma Ray Bursts is hidden from direct probing with photons mainly due to the high densities involved. Inferences on their properties are thus made from their cosmological setting, energetics, low-energy counterparts and variability. If GRBs are powered by hypercritical accretion onto compact objects, on small spatial scales the flow will exhibit fluctuations, which could in principle be reflected in the power output of the central engine and ultimately in the high energy prompt emission. Here we address this issue by characterizing the variability in neutrino cooled accr…
On 2018 July 28, GRB 180728A triggered \textit{Swift} satellites and, soon after the determination of the redshift, we identified this source as a type II binary-driven hypernova (BdHN II) in our model. Consequently, we predicted the appearance time of its associated supernova (SN), which was later confirmed as SN 2018fip. A BdHN II originates in a binary composed of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) undergoing SN, and the SN ejecta hypercritically accrete onto a companion neutron star (NS). From the time of the SN shock breakout to the time when the hypercritical accretion starts, we inf…

We simulate the first minutes of the evolution of a binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) event, with a special focus on the associated accretion processes of supernova (SN) ejecta onto the newborn neutron star ($ν$NS) and the NS companion. We calculate the rotational evolution of the $ν$NS and the NS under the torques exerted by the accreted matter and the magnetic field. We take into account general relativistic effects and use realistic hypercritical accretion rates obtained from three-dimensional smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical simulations of the BdHN for a variety of orbital peri…
Neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries exhibit oscillations during thermonuclear bursts, attributed to asymmetric brightness patterns on the burning surfaces. All models that have been proposed to explain the origin of these asymmetries (spreading hotspots, surface waves, and cooling wakes) depend on the accretion rate. By analysis of archival RXTE data of six oscillation sources, we investigate the accretion rate dependence of the amplitude of burst oscillations. This more than doubles the size of the sample analysed previously by Muno et al. (2004), who found indications for a relationship…
The physical origin of high-frequency QPOs (HFQPOs) in black-hole X-ray binaries remains an enigma despite many years of detailed observational studies. Although there exists a number of models for HFQPOs, many of these are simply "notions" or "concepts" without actual calculation derived from fluid or disk physics. Future progress requires a combination of numerical simulations and semi-analytic studies to extract physical insights. We review recent works on global oscillation modes in black-hole accretion disks, and explain how, with the help of general relativistic effects, the energy store…
Black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) display a wide range of variability phenomena, from long duration spectral state changes to short-term broadband variability and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). A particularly puzzling aspect is the production of QPOs, which -- if properly understood -- could be used as a powerful diagnostic tool of black hole accretion and evolution. In this work we analyse a high resolution three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a geometrically thin accretion disk which is tilted by $65^{\circ}$ with respect to the black hole spin axis.…
We study the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around the distorted Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of the resonant models. We confine ourselves to the case of a quadrupole distortion which can be caused for example by the accreting matter flow in the vicinity of the compact object. For the purpose we examine the linear stability of the circular geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane and derive analytical expressions for the radial and vertical epicyclic frequencies. We investigate their properties in comparison with the isolated Schwarzschild black hole. Due to th…
We report the discovery of burst oscillations from the intermittent accretion-powered millisecond pulsar (AMP) HETE J1900.1-2455, with a frequency approximately 1 Hz below the known spin frequency. The burst oscillation properties are far more similar to those of the non-AMPs and Aql X-1 (an intermittent AMP with a far lower duty cycle), than those of the AMPs SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE J1814-338. We discuss the implications for models of the burst oscillation and intermittency mechanisms.
The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) paradigm of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with supernovae (SNe) predicts a copious neutrino-antineutrino ($ν\barν$) emission owing to the hypercritical accretion process of SN ejecta onto a neutron star (NS) binary companion. The neutrino emission can reach luminosities of up to $10^{57}$MeV s$^{-1}$, mean neutrino energies 20 MeV, and neutrino densities $10^{31}$ cm$^{-3}$. Along their path from the vicinity of the NS surface outward, such neutrinos experience flavor transformations dictated by the neutrino to electron density ratio. We deter…
We consider a description of the stochastic oscillations of the general relativistic accretion disks around compact astrophysical objects interacting with their external medium based on a generalized Langevin equation with colored noise, which accounts for the general memory and retarded effects of the frictional force, and on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The presence of the memory effects influences the response of the disk to external random interactions, and modifies the dynamical behavior of the disk, as well as the energy dissipation processes. The generalized Langevin equation of…
We present the spectrum of eigenfrequencies of axisymmetric acoustic-inertial oscillations of thin accretion disks for a Schwarzschild black hole modeled with a pseudo-potential. There are nine discrete frequencies, corresponding to trapped modes. Eigenmodes with nine or more radial nodes in the inner disk belong to the continuum, whose frequency range starts somewhat below the maximum value of the radial epicyclic frequency. The results are derived under the assumption that the oscillatory motion is parallel to the midplane of the disk.
We study the quasi-periodic oscillations from the accretion disk around rotating traversable wormholes by means of the resonance models. We investigate the linear stability of the circular geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane for a general class of wormhole geometries deriving analytical expressions for the epicyclic frequencies. Since wormholes can often mimic black holes in the astrophysical observations, we analyze the properties of the quasi-circular oscillatory motion in comparison with the Kerr black hole. We demonstrate that wormholes possess distinctive features, which can be observ…
We study the oscillations of an axisymmetric, viscous, radiative, general relativistic hydrodynamical simulation of a geometrically thin disk around a non-rotating, $6.62\,M_\odot$ black hole. The numerical setup is initialized with a Novikov-Thorne, gas-pressure-dominated accretion disk, with an initial mass accretion rate of $\dot{m} = 0.01\,L_\mathrm{Edd}/c^2$ (where $L_\mathrm{Edd}$ is the Eddington luminosity and $c$ is the speed of light). Viscosity is treated with the $α$-prescription. The simulation was evolved for about $1000$ Keplerian orbital periods at three Schwarzschild radii (IS…
We present eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of trapped acoustic-inertial oscillations of thin accretion disks for a Schwarzschild black hole and a rapidly rotating Newtonian star (a Maclaurin spheroid). The results are derived in the formalism of Nowak and Wagoner (1991) with the assumption that the oscillatory motion is parallel to the midplane of the disk. The first four radial modes for each of five azimuthal modes $m = 0$ through $m = 4$ are presented. The frequencies and wavefunctions of the lowest modes may be accurately approximated by the Airy function.
In this paper, the numerical investigation of a Bondi-Hoyle accretion around a non-rotating black hole in a novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated by solving the general relativistic hydrodynamical equations using the high resolution shock capturing scheme. For this purpose, the accreated matter from the wind-accreating X-ray binaries falls towards the black hole from the far upstream side of the domain, suphersonically. We study the effects of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ in 4D EGB gravity on the accreated matter and shock cones created in the downstream re…
Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) have been routinely observed in black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs). These LFQPOs can be explained by axisymmetric shock oscillation in accretion flow around a rotating black hole. We address the physical origin of Type-C LFQPOs in BHXRBs observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite considering a minimum number of free parameters, namely, specific energy and specific angular momentum of the infalling matter for a given set of BH mass and spin parameter. We apply the solution for a large number of BH candidates to further strengthen the…
High luminosity accretion onto a strongly magnetized neutron star results in a radiation pressure dominated, magnetically confined accretion column. We investigate the dynamics of these columns using two-dimensional radiative relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations, restricting consideration to modest accretion rates where the height of the column is low enough that Cartesian geometry can be employed. The column structure is dynamically maintained through high-frequency oscillations of the accretion shock at $\simeq 10-25$~kHz. These oscillations arise because it is necessary to redistrib…
Coherent oscillations and the evolution of the X-ray spectrum during thermonuclear X-ray bursts in accreting neutron-star X-ray binaries have been studied intensively but separately. We analysed all the X-ray bursts of the source 4U 1728-34 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We found that the presence of burst oscillations can be used to predict the behaviour of the blackbody radius during the cooling phase of the bursts. If a burst shows oscillations, during the cooling phase the blackbody radius remains more or less constant for ~2 - ~8s, whereas in bursts that do not show oscillations th…
This review covers the main aspects of black hole accretion disk theory. We begin with the view that one of the main goals of the theory is to better understand the nature of black holes themselves. In this light we discuss how accretion disks might reveal some of the unique signatures of strong gravity: the event horizon, the innermost stable circular orbit, and the ergosphere. We then review, from a first-principles perspective, the physical processes at play in accretion disks. This leads us to the four primary accretion disk models that we review: Polish doughnuts (thick disks), Shakura-Su…

High-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) appear in general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetically choked accretion flows around rapidly rotating black holes (BHs). We perform polarized radiative transfer calculations with ASTRORAY code to explore the manifestations of these QPOs for SgrA*. We construct a simulation-based model of a radiatively inefficient accretion flow and find model parameters by fitting the mean polarized source spectrum. The simulated QPOs have a total sub-mm flux amplitude up to 5% and a linearly polarized flux amplitude up to 2%. The oscill…
We present a toy model of mildly super-Eddington, optically thin accretion onto a compact star in the Schwarzschild metric, which predicts periodic variations of luminosity when matter is supplied to the system at a constant accretion rate. These are related to the periodic appearance and disappearance of the Eddington Capture Sphere. In the model the frequency is found to vary inversely with the luminosity. If the input accretion rate varies (strictly) periodically, the luminosity variation is quasi-periodic, and the quality factor is inversely proportional to the relative amplitude of mass a…
Bondi accretion assumes that there is a sink of mass at the center -- which in case of a black hole (BH) corresponds to the advection of matter across the event horizon. Other stars, such as a neutron star (NS), have surfaces and hence the infalling matter has to slow down at the surface. We study the initial value problem in which the matter distribution is uniform and at rest at $t=0$. We consider different inner boundary conditions for BHs and NSs: outflow boundary condition (mimicking mass sink at the center) valid for BHs; and {\em reflective} and steady-shock (allowing gas to cross the i…

We study the effect of large-scale magnetic fields on the non-axisymmetric inertial-acoustic modes (also called p-modes) trapped in the innermost regions of accretion discs around black holes (BHs). These global modes could provide an explanation for the high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) observed in BH X-ray binaries. There may be observational evidence for the presence of such large-scale magnetic fields in the disks since episodic jets are observed in the same spectral state when HFQPOs are detected. We find that a large-scale poloidal magnetic field can enhance the corotat…
We investigate the effects of subsonic turbulence on a normal mode of oscillation [a possible origin of the high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) within some black hole accretion disks]. We consider perturbations of a time-dependent background (steady state disk plus turbulence), obtaining an oscillator equation with stochastic damping, (mildly) nonlinear restoring, and stochastic driving forces. The (long-term) mean values of our turbulent functions vanish. In particular, turbulence does not damp the oscillation modes, so `turbulent viscosity' is not operative. However, the freq…
Given the peculiar and (in spite of many efforts) unexplained quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) twin peak phenomena in accretion disc PSD observations, the present exploratory analytical article tries to inquire deeper into the relationship between discoseismic modes and the underlying driving turbulence in order to assess its importance. We employ a toy model in the form of a Gaussian white noise driven damped harmonic oscillator with stochastic frequency. This oscillator represents the discoseismic mode. (Stochastic damping was also considered, but interestingly found to be less relevant for …
We investigate the frequency and amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) 4U 1636-53 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We find that no mHz QPOs appear when the source is in the hard spectral state. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the frequency and the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs. Notwithstanding, for the first time, we find that the absolute RMS amplitude of the mHz QPOs is insensitive to the parameter Sa, which measures the position of the source in the colour…
Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) are very puzzling since they remain totally unexplained by popular earlier models of accretion disks. The significant rms value in power density spectrum implies that the oscillation involves in the dynamical and non-linear variation of certain region of the accretion disk itself. The nature of the energy dependence implies that the region which produces Comptonized hard tail is also responsible for QPOs. Similarly, the occurrences of the QPOs are strongly related to the jet formation and the spectral states. These features are the natural consequences of the…
Magnetic fields are important for accretion disc structure. Magnetic fields in a disc system may be transported with the accreted matter. They can be associated with either the central body and/or jet, and be fossil or dynamo excited in situ. We consider dynamo excitation of magnetic fields in accretion discs of accreting binary systems in an attempt to clarify possible configurations of dynamo generated magnetic fields. We first model the entire disc with realistic radial extent and thickness using an alpha-quenching non-linearity. We then study the simultaneous effect of feedback from the Lo…
We study the dynamics of spiral waves and oscillation modes in relativistic rotating discs around black holes. Generalizing the Newtonian theory, we show that wave absorption can take place at the corotation resonance, where the pattern frequency of the wave matches the background disc rotation rate. We derive the general relativistic expression for the disc vortensity (vorticity divided by surface density), which governs the behaviour of density perturbation near corotation. Depending on the gradient of the generalized disc vortensity, corotational wave absorption can lead to the amplificatio…
Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) show burst oscillations during thermonuclear explosions of the accreted plasma which are markedly different from those observed in non-pulsating low mass X-ray binaries. The AMXP XTE J1814-338 is known for having burst oscillations that are phase locked (constant phase difference) and coincident with the accretion powered pulsations during all its thermonuclear bursts but the last one. In this work we use a coherent timing analysis to investigate this phenomenon in more detail and with higher time resolution than was done in the past. We confirm that…
We study the temporal and energy spectral properties of the unique neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-462. After assuming the HB/NB vertex as a reference position of accretion rate, the horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) of the HB/NB vertex is roughly 50 Hz. It indicates that the HBO is independent with the accretion rate or the source intensity. The spectral analysis shows $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{2.9\pm0.09}$ in the HB/NB vertex and $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{1.7\pm0.06}$ in the NB/FB vertex, which implies that different accretion rate may be produced i…
We simulate shock-free and shocked viscous accretion flow onto a black hole in a two dimensional cylindrical geometry, where initial conditions were chosen from analytical solutions. The simulation code used the Lagrangian Total Variation Diminishing (LTVD) and remap routine, which enabled us to attain high accuracy in capturing shocks and to handle the angular momentum distribution correctly. Inviscid shock-free accretion disk solution produced a thick disk structure, while the viscous shock-free solution attained a Bondi-like structure, but in either case, no jet activity nor any QPO-like ac…
Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binary systems containing a strongly magnetized white dwarf that accretes matter coming from an M-dwarf companion. High-energy radiation coming from those objects is emitted from the accretion column close to the white dwarf photosphere at the impact region. Its properties depend on the characteristics of the white dwarf and an accurate accretion column model allows the properties of the binary system to be inferred, such as the white dwarf mass, its magnetic field, and the accretion rate. We study the temporal and spectral behaviour of the accretion re…
We analysed the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data from a sample of bright accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). With the aim of studying the quasi-periodic variability as a function of the accretion regime, we carried out a systematic search of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray time series of these systems, using the integrated fractional variability as a tracker for the accretion states. We found that the three QPO types originally identified in the '80s for the brightest LMXBs, the so-called Z-sources, i.e., horizontal, normal and flaring branch…
A model of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is proposed based on the perturbed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations of accretion disk. It turns out that the LFQPOs frequencies of some BHXBs can be fitted by the frequencies of the toroidal Alfvén wave oscillation corresponding to the maximal radiation flux. In addition, the positive correlation of the LFQPO frequencies with the radiation flux from accretion disk is well interpreted.
