We employ a viable $f(R)$ gravity model capable of giving an inflationary phase in order to study the subsequent reheating phase due to particle creation at the expense of energy in the scalaron field. Since quantum mechanics is expected to play a dominant role in particle creation, we formulate a plausible scenario of reheating obeying Heisenberg's uncertainty principle that imposes constraints on the particles created in the configuration space. We show that, so long as the energy available in the scalaron field is sufficient to populate the entire configuration space, the energy density of the particles grows, attaining a maximum value giving an efficient reheating. Beyond this maximum, the available energy becomes insufficient to populate the entire configuration space leading to a declining energy density.
We further find that there is a negligible growth of energy density in the inflationary phase that lasts for $\sim 10^7 \, t_{\rm P}$, although particles are constantly created in this phase. The subsequent reheating phase spans for $\sim10^{11} \, t_{\rm P}$ and it begins with a well-defined preheating stage lasting for $\sim 10^{5} \, t_{\rm P}$, making a cross-over to a thermilization regime. The temperature at the beginning of the thermilization is found to be $T_{\rm th}\sim 10^{12}$ GeV, whereas the reheating temperature is estimated as $T_{r}\sim10^{13}$ GeV. Importantly, these estimates follow from a single parameter, the scalaron mass, $M\sim10^{-5} \, M_{\rm P}$.
We propose an extension of the scalaron-Higgs model by a non-minimal coupling of the Standard Model Higgs boson to the quadratic Ricci scalar resulting in a Higgs-dependent scalaron mass. The model predicts a successful stage of effective single-field Starobinsky inflation. It features a multi-field amplification mechanism leading to a peak in the inflationary power spectrum at small wavelengths which enhances the production of primordial black holes. The extended scalaron-Higgs model unifies inflationary cosmology with elementary particle physics and explains the origin of cold dark matter in…

The Reheating process at the end of inflation is often modeled by an oscillating scalar field which shows a background dust-like behaviour, prompting the analysis of gravitational collapse and black hole formation in this era to be approached by the spherical collapse of standard structure formation. In the scalar field dark matter structure formation process virialized halos halt the direct collapse, resulting in halos with condensed central cores at the de Broglie scale of the dominant scalar field. We show that a similar process can take place during reheating, leading to the formation of p…
We investigate the co-evolution of dark matter (DM) density perturbation and metric perturbation in the WIMP paradigm. Instead of adopting the conventional assumption that DM starts out in thermal equilibrium, we propose a simple phase of DM production for the WIMP paradigm and extend our analysis to this phase. Being free from the envelop of thermal equilibrium, an amplified perturbative resonance between DM density perturbation and scalar modes of metric perturbation takes place during the DM production phase, and consequently results in a suppression of the tensor-to-scalar ratio of metric …
Primordial gravitational waves (GWs) carry the imprints of the dynamics of the universe during its earliest stages. With a variety of GW detectors being proposed to operate over a wide range of frequencies, there is great expectation that observations of primordial GWs can provide us with an unprecedented window to the physics operating during inflation and reheating. In this work, we closely examine the effects of the regime of reheating on the spectrum of primordial GWs observed today. We consider a scenario wherein the phase of reheating is described by an averaged equation of state (EoS) p…
In order to describe inflation in general relativity, scalar fields must inevitably be used, with all the setbacks of that description. On the other hand, $f(R)$ gravity and other modified gravity theories seem to provide a unified description of early and late-time dynamics without resorting to scalar or phantom theories. The question is, can modified gravity affect directly the mysterious radiation domination era? Addressing this question is the focus in this work, and we shall consider the case for which in the early stages of the radiation domination era, namely during the reheating era, t…
We investigate Hawking evaporation of a population of primordial black holes (PBHs) prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) as a mechanism to achieve asymmetric reheating of two sectors coupled solely by gravity. While the visible sector is reheated by the inflaton or a modulus, the dark sector is reheated by PBHs. Compared to inflationary or modular reheating of both sectors, there are two advantages: $(i)$ inflaton or moduli mediated operators that can subsequently thermalize the dark sector with the visible sector are not relevant to the asymmetric reheating process; $(ii)$ the mass and abu…
We study perturbations of a complex scalar field during reheating with no self-interaction in the regime $ μ\gg H$, when the scalar field has a fast oscillatory behaviour (close to a pressure-less fluid). We focus on the precise determination of the instability scale and find it differs from that associated with a real scalar field. We further look at the probability that unstable fluctuations form Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) obtaining a significant production of tiny PBHs which quickly evaporate and may subsequently leave a population of Planck-mass relics. We finally impose restrictions on…
We discuss the model of the primordial black holes formation at the reheating stage. These small massive black holes appear due to specific properties of the compact extra dimensions. The latter gives rise the low energy model containing the effective scalar field potential capable for the domain walls production. Formed during inflation, these walls are quite dense so they collapse soon after inflation ends. The discussion is performed within the scope of multidimensional $f(R)$-gravity.
Inflationary magnetogenesis has long been assumed to be the most promising mechanism for producing large-scale magnetic fields in our universe. However, generically, such models are plagued with either backreaction or strong coupling problems within the standard framework. This paper has shown that the reheating phase can play a crucial role in alleviating those problems along with CMB. Assuming the electrical conductivity to be negligible during the entire period of reheating, the classic Faraday electromagnetic induction changes the magnetic field's dynamics drastically. Our detailed analysi…

We discuss the footprint of evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) on stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) induced by scalar perturbations. We consider the case where PBHs once dominated the Universe but eventually evaporated before the big bang nucleosynthesis. The reheating through the PBH evaporation could end with a sudden change in the equation of state of the Universe compared to the conventional reheating caused by particle decay. We show that this "sudden reheating" by the PBH evaporation enhances the induced GWs, whose amount depends on the length of the PBH-dominated era and th…
We investigate the generation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) with the aid of gravitationally increased friction mechanism originated from the NonMinimal field Derivative Coupling (NMDC) to gravity framework, with the quartic potential. Applying the coupling parameter as a two-parted function of inflaton field and fine-tuning of five parameter assortments we can acquire ultra slow-roll phase to slow down the inflaton field due to high friction. This enables us to achieve enough enhancement in the amplitude of curvature perturbations power spectra to generate PBHs with different masses. The re…
We explore the consequences of a time-dependent inflaton Equation-of-State (EoS) parameter in the context of the post-inflationary perturbative Boltzmann reheating. In particular, we numerically solve the perturbative coupled system of Boltzmann equations involving the inflaton energy density, the radiation energy density and the related entropy density and temperature of the produced particle thermal bath. We exploit reasonable Ansätze for the EoS and discuss the robustness of the Boltzmann system. We also comment on the possible microscopic origin related to a time dependent inflaton potenti…
In this work we investigate the effects of a geometrically generated early dark energy era on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. The early dark energy era, which we choose it to have a constant equation of state parameter $w$, is synergistically generated by an appropriate $f(R)$ gravity in the presence of matter and radiation perfect fluids. As we demonstrate, the predicted signal for the energy spectrum of the $f(R)$ primordial gravitational waves is amplified and can be detectable, for various reheating temperatures, especially for large reheating temperatures. The s…
