We study motion of tagged particles in a harmonic chain of active particles. We consider three models of active particle dynamics - run and tumble particle, active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle and active Brownian particle. We investigate the variance, auto correlation, covariance and unequal time cross correlation of two tagged particles. For all three models, we observe that the mean squared displacement undergoes a crossover from the super-diffusive $\sim t^μ$ scaling for $t \ll τ_A$ ($τ_A$ being the time scale arising due to the activity) to the sub-diffusive $\sim \sqrt{t}$ scaling for $t \gg τ_A$, where $μ= \frac{3}{2}$ for RTP, $μ= \frac{5}{2}$ for AOUP. For the $x$ and $y$-coordinates of ABPs we get $μ=\frac{7}{2}$ and $μ=\frac{5}{2}$ respectively. We show that these crossover behaviours in each case can be described by appropriate crossover function that connects these two scaling regimes. We compute these crossover functions explicitly. In addition, we also find that the equal and unequal time auto and cross correlations obey interesting scaling forms in the appropriate limits of the observation time $t$. The associated scaling functions are rigorously derived in all cases. All our analytical results are well supported by the numerical simulations.
The thermodynamics of a long self-repulsive chain is studied. In $D<4$ dimensions it shows two distinctly different regimes, corresponding to weak and strong correlations in the system. A simple microscopic analytical model is presented which successfully describes both the regimes. The self-consistent scheme is used, in which the center of mass of a chain is fixed explicitly. This allows to take correlations into account in an indirect manner.
We report experimental evidence for a crossover between a liquid-like state and a gas-like state in fluid methane (CH4). This crossover is observed in all of our experiments, up to 397 K temperature; 2.1 times the critical temperature of methane. The crossover has been characterized with both Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction in a number of separate experiments, and confirmed to be reversible. We associate this crossover with the Frenkel line - a recently hypothesized crossover in dynamic properties of fluids extending to arbitrarily high pressure and temperature, dividing the phase dia…
We study nonadiabatic electron transfer within the biased spin-boson model. We calculate the incoherent transfer rate in analytic form at all temperatures for a power law form of the spectral density of the solvent coupling. In the Ohmic case, we present the exact low temperature corrections to the zero temperature rate for arbitrarily large bias energies between the two redox sites. Both for Ohmic and non-Ohmic coupling, we give the rate in the entire regime extending from zero temperature, where the rate depends significantly on the detailed spectral behaviour, via the crossover region, up t…
We show the existence of fragile-to-strong transitions in kinetically constrained systems by studying the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a generic constrained Ising spin chain which interpolates between the symmetric and fully asymmetric cases. We find that for large but finite asymmetry the model displays a crossover from fragile to strong glassy behaviour at finite temperature, which is controlled by the asymmetry parameter. The relaxation in the fragile region presents stretched exponential behaviour, with a temperature dependent stretching exponent which is predicted. Our r…
We study heat conduction in one, two and three dimensional anharmonic lattices connected to stochastic Langevin heat baths. The inter-atomic potential of the lattices is double-well type, i.e., $V_{\rm DW}(x)=k_2x^2/2+k_4 x^4/4$ with $k_2<0$ and $k_4>0$. We observe two different temperature regimes of transport: a high-temperature regime where asymptotic length dependence of nonequilibrium steady state heat current is similar to the well-known Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices with an inter-atomic potential, $V_{\rm FPU}(x)=k_2x^2/2+k_4 x^4/4$ with $k_2,k_4>0$. A low temperature regime where heat cond…
We apply simulated tempering and magnetizing (STM) Monte Carlo simulations to the two-dimensional three-state Potts model in an external magnetic field in order to investigate the crossover scaling behaviour in the temperature-field plane at the Potts critical point and towards the Ising universality class for negative magnetic fields. Our data set has been generated by STM simulations of several square lattices with sizes up to 160 x 160 spins, supplemented by conventional canonical simulations of larger lattices at selected simulation points. We present careful scaling and finite-size scalin…
Interacting physical systems in the neighborhood of criticality (and massive continuum field theories) can often be characterized by just two physical scales: a (macroscopic) correlation length and a (microscopic) interaction range, related to the coupling and measured by the Ginzburg number $G$. A critical crossover limit can be defined when both scales become large while their ratio stays finite. The corresponding scaling functions are universal, and they are related to the standard field-theory renormalization-group functions. The critical crossover describes the unique flow from the Gaussi…
We propose a model which explains how power-law crossover behaviour can arise in a system which is capable of experiencing cascading failure. In our model the susceptibility of the system to cascades is described by a single number, the propagation power, which measures the ease with which cascades propagate. Physically, such a number could represent the density of unstable material in a system, its internal connectivity, or the mean susceptibility of its component parts to failure. We assume that the propagation power follows an upward drifting Brownian motion between cascades, and drops disc…
We investigate the static critical behaviour of a uniaxial magnetic layer, with finite thickness L in one direction, yet infinitely extended in the remaining d dimensions. The magnetic dipole-dipole interaction is taken into account. We apply a variant of Wilson's momentum shell renormalisation group approach to describe the crossover between the critical behaviour of the 3-D Ising, 2-d Ising, 3-D uniaxial dipolar, and the 2-d uniaxial dipolar universality classes. The corresponding renormalisation group fixed points are in addition to different effective dimensionalities characterised by dist…
A spatial avalanche model is introduced, in which avalanches increase stability in the regions where they occur. Instability is driven globally by a driving process that contains shocks. The system is typically subcritical, but the shocks occasionally lift it into a near or super critical state from which it rapidly retreats due to large avalanches. These shocks leave behind a signature -- a distinct power--law crossover in the avalanche size distribution. The model is inspired by landslide field data, but the principles may be applied to any system that experiences stabilizing failures, posse…
The emerging diffusive dynamics in many complex systems shows a characteristic crossover behaviour from anomalous to normal diffusion which is otherwise fitted by two independent power-laws. A prominent example for a subdiffusive-diffusive crossover are viscoelastic systems such as lipid bilayer membranes, while superdiffusive-diffusive crossovers occur in systems of actively moving biological cells. We here consider the general dynamics of a stochastic particle driven by so-called tempered fractional Gaussian noise, that is noise with Gaussian amplitude and power-law correlations, which are c…
Employing Monte-Carlo simulation techniques we investigate the statistical properties of equally charged particles confined in a one-dimensional box trap and detect a crossover from a crystalline to a cluster phase with increasing temperature. The corresponding transition temperature depends separately on the number of particles N and the box size L, implying non-extensivity due to the long-range character of the interactions. The probability density of the spacing between the particles exhibits at low temperatures an accumulation of discrete peaks with an overall asymmetric shape. In the vici…
We consider a discrete time quantum walker in one dimension, where at each step, the step length $\ell$ is chosen from a distribution $P(\ell) \propto \ell^{-δ-1}$ with $\ell \leq \ell_{max}$. We evaluate the probability $f(x,t)$ that the walker is at position $x$ at time $t$ and its first two moments. As expected, the disorder effectively localizes the walk even for large values of $δ$. Asymptotically, $\langle x^2 \rangle \propto t^{3/2}$ and $\langle x \rangle \propto t^{1/2}$ independent of $δ$ and $\ell$, both finite. The scaled distribution $f(x,t)t^{1/2}$ plotted versus $x/t^{1/2}$ show…
We discuss the thermal entanglement close to a quantum phase transition by analyzing the concurrence for one dimensional models in the quantum Ising universality class. We demonstrate that the entanglement sensitivity to thermal and to quantum fluctuations obeys universal $T\neq 0$--scaling behaviour. We show that the entanglement, together with its criticality, exhibits a peculiar universal crossover behaviour.
The idea that the dynamics of a spin is determined by the size of its neighbouring domains was recently introduced (S. Biswas and P. Sen, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 80}, 027101 (2009)) in a Ising spin model (henceforth, referred to as model I). A parameter $p$ is now defined to modify the dynamics such that a spin can sense domain sizes up to $R = pL/2$ in a one dimensional system of size $L$. For the cutoff factor $p$ \to 0$, the dynamics is Ising like and the domains grow with time $t$ diffusively as $ t^{1/z}$ with $z=2$, while for $p=1$, the original model I showed ballistic dynamics with $z \simeq…
We consider the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with S=1/2 and very weak easy-plane exchange anisotropy; by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method, based on the continuous-time loop algorithm, we find that the thermodynamics of the model is highly sensitive to the presence of tiny anisotropies and is characterized by a crossover between isotropic and planar behaviour. We discuss the mechanism underlying the crossover phenomenon and show that it occurs at a temperature which is characteristic of the model. The expected Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is observed bel…
We examine the crossover from classical to non-classical critical behaviour in two-dimensional systems with a one-component order parameter. Since the degree of universality of the corresponding crossover functions is still subject to debate, we try to induce non-universal effects by adding interactions with a second length scale. Although the crossover functions clearly depend on the range of the interactions, they turn out to be remarkably robust against further variation of the interaction profile. In particular, we find that the earlier observed non-monotonic crossover of the effective sus…
A dissipative stochastic sandpile model is constructed on one and two dimensional small-world networks with different shortcut densities $ϕ$ where $ϕ=0$ and $1$ represent a regular lattice and a random network respectively. In the small-world regime ($2^{-12} \le ϕ\le 0.1$), the critical behaviour of the model is explored studying different geometrical properties of the avalanches as a function of avalanche size $s$. For both the dimensions, three regions of $s$, separated by two crossover sizes $s_1$ and $s_2$ ($s_1<s_2$), are identified analyzing the scaling behaviour of average height and a…
We study the evolution of a system of free fermions in one dimension under the simultaneous effects of coherent tunneling and stochastic Markovian noise. We identify a class of noise terms where a hierarchy of decoupled equations for the correlation functions emerges. In the special case of incoherent, nearest-neighbour hopping the equation for the two-point functions is solved explicitly. The Green's function for the particle density is obtained analytically and a timescale is identified where a crossover from ballistic to diffusive behaviour takes place. The result can be interpreted as a co…
The phase transition in a 3D array of classical anharmonic oscillators with harmonic nearest-neighbour coupling (discrete $ϕ^4$ model) is studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and by analytical methods. The model allows to choose a single dimensionless parameter a determining completely the behaviour of the system. Changing a from 0 to $+\infty$ allows to go continuously from the displacive to the order-disorder limit. We calculate the transition temperature $T_c$ and the temperature dependence of the order parameter down to T=0 for a wide range of the parameter a. The $T_c$ from MC calculat…
Within self-consistent field theory we study the phase behaviour of a symmetric binary AB polymer blend confined into a thin film. The film surfaces interact with the monomers via short range potentials. One surface attracts the A component and the corresponding semi-infinite system exhibits a first order wetting transition. The surface interaction of the opposite surface is varied as to study the crossover from capillary condensation for symmetric surface fields to the interface localisation/delocalisation transition for antisymmetric surface fields. In the former case the phase diagram has a…
Early sedimentation in a liquid mixture off-critically quenched in its miscibility gap was investigated with a light attenuation technique. The time evolution of the droplets distribution is characteristic of an emulsion coalescing by gravitational collisions. This sedimentation behaviour has given access to the phase-separating kinetics and a crossover on the way toward equilibrium was observed, which separates free growth from conserved order-parameter coarsening with a crossover time fitting well to theoretical predictions.
We study scaling properties of the model of fully developed turbulence for a compressible fluid, based on the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation, by means of the field theoretic renormalization group (RG). The scaling properties in this approach are related to fixed points of the RG equation. Here we study a possible existence of other scaling regimes and an opportunity of a crossover between them. This may take place in some other space dimensions, particularly at $d = 4$. A new regime may there arise and then by continuity moves into $d = 3$. Our calculations have shown that there really exis…
The low-temperature properties and crossover phenomena of $d$-dimensional transverse Ising-like systems within the influence domain of the quantum critical point are investigated solving the appropriate one-loop renormalization group equations. The phase diagram is obtained near and at $d=3$ and several sets of critical exponents are determined which describe different responses of a system to quantum fluctuations according to the way of approaching the quantum critical point. The results are in remarkable agreement with experiments for a wide variety of compounds exhibiting a quantum phase tr…
Tensor-network methods are used to perform a comparative study of the two-dimensional classical Heisenberg and $\mathrm{RP}^2$ models. We demonstrate that uniform matrix product states (MPS) with explicit $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ symmetry can probe correlation lengths up to $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ sites accurately, and we study the scaling of entanglement entropy and universal features of MPS entanglement spectra. For the Heisenberg model, we find no signs of a finite-temperature phase transition, supporting the scenario of asymptotic freedom. For the $\mathrm{RP}^2$ model we observe an abrupt onset of sc…
Due to their unique topology of having no chain ends, dilute solutions of ring polymers exhibit behaviour distinct from their linear chain counterparts. The universality of their static and dynamic properties, as a function of solvent quality $z$ in the thermal crossover regime between $θ$ and athermal solvents, is studied here using Brownian dynamics simulations. The universal ratio $U_{\text{RD}}$ of the radius of gyration $R_g$ to the hydrodynamic radius $R_H$ is determined, and a comparative study of the swelling ratio $α_g$ of the radius of gyration, the swelling ratio $α_H$ of the hydrod…
We study the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin glass in Migdal-Kadanoff approximation. At zero temperature, T=0, the properties of the spin glass result from the ground-state degeneracy and can be elucidated using scaling arguments based on entropy. The approach to the asymptotic scaling regime is very slow, and the correct exponents are only visible beyond system sizes around 64. At T>0, a crossover from the zero-temperature behaviour to the behaviour expected from the droplet picture occurs at length scales proportional to $T^{-d_s/2}$ where $d_s$ is the fract…
The phase behavior of liquids confined in a slit geometry does not reveal a crossover from a three to a two-dimensional behavior as the gap size decreases. Indeed, the prototypical two-dimensional hexatic phase only occurs in liquids confined to a monolayer. Here, we demonstrate that the dimensionality crossover is apparent in the lateral size dependence of the relaxation dynamics of confined liquids, developing a Debye model for the density of vibrational states of confined systems and performing extensive numerical simulations. In confined systems, Mermin-Wagner fluctuations enhance the ampl…
Among the challenges in discriminating between theoretical approaches to the glass transition is obtaining suitable data. In particular, particle--resolved data in liquids supercooled past the mode--coupling crossover has until recently been hard to obtain. Here we combine nano-particle resolved experiments and GPU simulation data which addresses this and investigate the predictions of differing theoretical approaches. We find support for both dynamic facilitation and thermodynamic approaches. In particular, excitations, the elementary units of relaxation in dynamic facilitation theory follow …
The passive and active motion of micron-sized tracer particles in crowded liquids and inside living biological cells is ubiquitously characterised by "viscoelastic" anomalous diffusion, in which the increments of the motion feature long-ranged negative and positive correlations. While viscoelastic anomalous diffusion is typically modelled by a Gaussian process with correlated increments, so-called fractional Gaussian noise, an increasing number of systems are reported, in which viscoelastic anomalous diffusion is paired with non-Gaussian displacement distributions. Following recent advances in…
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of spin-spin correlation functions for the integrable Heisenberg chain. To this end we use the Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM) technique developed in \cite{AK} which results in a set of non-linear integral equations (NLIE). In the case of the largest eigenvalue the solution to these equations yields the free energy and by modifications of the paths of integration the next-leading eigenvalues and hence the correlation lengths are obtained. At finite field $h>0$ and sufficiently high temperature $T$ the next-leading eigenvalue is unique and given by a 1-stri…

Infrared asymptotic behaviour of a scalar field, passively advected by a random shear flow, is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group and the operator product expansion. The advecting velocity is Gaussian, white in time, with correlation function of the form $\propto δ(t-t') / k_{\bot}^{d-1+ξ}$, where $k_{\bot}=|{\bf k}_{\bot}|$ and ${\bf k}_{\bot}$ is the component of the wave vector, perpendicular to the distinguished direction (`direction of the flow') --- the $d$-dimensional generalization of the ensemble introduced by Avellaneda and Majda [{\it Commun. Math. Phys.} …
A two-loop renormalization group analysis of the critical behaviour at an isotropic Lifshitz point is presented. Using dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of poles, we obtain the expansions of the critical exponents $ν$ and $η$, the crossover exponent $ϕ$, as well as the (related) wave-vector exponent $β_q$, and the correction-to-scaling exponent $ω$ to second order in $ε_8=8-d$. These are compared with the authors' recent $ε$-expansion results [{\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 62} (2000) 12338; {\it Nucl. Phys. B} {\bf 612} (2001) 340] for the general case of an $m$-axial Lifshitz point…
The statistical mechanics of a ribbon polymer made up of two semiflexible chains is studied using both analytical techniques and simulation. The system is found to have a crossover transition at some finite temperature, from a type of short range order to a fundamentally different sort of short range order. In the high temperature regime, the 2-point correlation functions of the object are identical to worm-like chains, while in the low temperature regime they are different due to a twist structure. The crossover happens when the persistence length of individual strands becomes comparable to t…
We study (1+1)-dimensional turbulence in the framework of the Martin-Siggia-Rose field theory formalism. The analysis is focused on the asymptotic behaviour at the right tail of the probability distribution function (pdf) of velocity differences, where shock waves do not contribute. A BRS-preserving scheme of phase space reduction, based on the smoothness of the relevant velocity fields, leads to an effective theory for a few degrees of freedom. The sum over fluctuations around the instanton solution is written as the expectation value of a functional of the time-dependent physical fields, whi…
