We present the first general formulas for the central and non-central moments of the multinomial distribution, using a combinatorial argument and the factorial moments previously obtained in Mosimann (1962). We use the formulas to give explicit expressions for all the non-central moments up to order 8 and all the central moments up to order 4. These results expand significantly on those in Newcomer (2008) and Newcomer et al. (2008), where the non-central moments were calculated up to order 4.
We give the first explicit formulas for the joint third and fourth central moments of the multinomial distribution, by differentiating the moment generating function. A general formula for the joint factorial moments was previously given in Mosimann (1962).
In Siotani & Fujikoshi (1984), a precise local limit theorem for the multinomial distribution is derived by inverting the Fourier transform, where the error terms are explicit up to order $N^{-1}$. In this paper, we give an alternative (conceptually simpler) proof based on Stirling's formula and a careful handling of Taylor expansions, and we show how the result can be used to approximate multinomial probabilities on most subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Furthermore, we discuss a recent application of the result to obtain asymptotic properties of Bernstein estimators on the simplex, we improve the m…
We show that the moment generating function of the Kullback-Leibler divergence (relative entropy) between the empirical distribution of $n$ independent samples from a distribution $P$ over a finite alphabet of size $k$ (i.e. a multinomial distribution) and $P$ itself is no more than that of a gamma distribution with shape $k - 1$ and rate $n$. The resulting exponential concentration inequality becomes meaningful (less than 1) when the divergence $\varepsilon$ is larger than $(k-1)/n$, whereas the standard method of types bound requires $\varepsilon > \frac{1}{n} \cdot \log{\binom{n+k-1}{k-1}} …
Diaconis and Griffiths (2014) study the multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials orthogonal on the multinomial distribution. In this paper we derive the reproducing kernel orthogonal polynomials Q_n(x,y};N,p) on the multinomial distribution which are sums of products of orthonormal polynomials in x and y of fixed total degree n=0,1,.., N. sum_{n=0}^N rho^nQ_n(x,y);N,p) arises naturally from a probabilistic argument. An application to a multinomial goodness of fit test is developed, where the chi-squared test statistic is decomposed into orthogonal components which test the order of fit. A new dupli…
Let $μ$ be a probability measure (or corresponding random variable) such that all moments $μ_n$ exist. Knowledge of the moments is not sufficient to determine infinite divisibility of the measure; we show also that infinitely divisible, and in particular lognormal, distributions lose infinitely divisibilty when censored in certain ways even if all moments are arbitrarily close to those of the uncensored distribution. The moments of a composition of k copies of $μ$ are expressed as combinatorial compositions of the $μ_n$. We express the moments of the compositions in the context of occupancy pr…
This note examines linear combinations of multi-indexed sequences and derives the multivariate generating function of such a linear combination in terms of the original sequence's m.g.f. Applications include finding distributions and moments of non-negative discrete random variables conditioned on non-negative linear combinations of the original variables. Examples include independent Poisson r.v.'s and a $d$-variate multinomial distribution.
An $(n,k)$-Poisson Multinomial Distribution (PMD) is the distribution of the sum of $n$ independent random vectors supported on the set ${\cal B}_k=\{e_1,\ldots,e_k\}$ of standard basis vectors in $\mathbb{R}^k$. We show that any $(n,k)$-PMD is ${\rm poly}\left({k\over σ}\right)$-close in total variation distance to the (appropriately discretized) multi-dimensional Gaussian with the same first two moments, removing the dependence on $n$ from the Central Limit Theorem of Valiant and Valiant. Interestingly, our CLT is obtained by bootstrapping the Valiant-Valiant CLT itself through the structura…
This paper analyses a class of route choice models with closed-form probability expressions, namely, Generalized Multivariate Extreme Value (GMEV) models. A large group of these models emerge from different utility formulas that combine systematic utility and random error terms. Twelve models are captured in a single discrete choice framework. The additive utility formula leads to the known logit family, being multinomial, path-size, paired combinatorial and link-nested. For the multiplicative formulation only the multinomial and path-size weibit models have been identified; this study also id…
In the paper we develop an approach to asymptotic normality through factorial cumulants. Factorial cumulants arise in the same manner from factorial moments, as do (ordinary) cumulants from (ordinary) moments. Another tool we exploit is a new identity for "moments" of partitions of numbers. The general limiting result is then used to (re-)derive asymptotic normality for several models including classical discrete distributions, occupancy problems in some generalized allocation schemes and two models related to negative multinomial distribution.
The Mahonian statistic is the number of inversions in a permutation of a multiset with $a_i$ elements of type $i$, $1\le i\le m$. The counting function for this statistic is the $q$ analog of the multinomial coefficient $\binom{a_1+...+a_m}{a_1,... a_m}$, and the probability generating function is the normalization of the latter. We give two proofs that the distribution is asymptotically normal. The first is {\it computer-assisted}, based on the method of moments. The Maple package {\tt MahonianStat}, available from the webpage of this article, can be used by the reader to perform experiments …
In this paper, we consider the occupancy distribution for an open network of infinite server queues with multivariate batch arrivals following a non-homogeneous Poisson process, and general service time distributions. We derive a probability generating function for the transient occupancy distribution of the network, and prove that it is necessary and sufficient for ergodicity that the expected occupancy time for each batch be finite. Further, we recover recurrence relations for the transient probability mass function formulated in terms of a distribution obtained by compounding the batch size…
A detailed proof of a recent result on explicit formulae for the product moments $E \left \{ X_1^{a_1} X_2^{a_2} \cdots X_n^{a_n}\right \}$ of multivariate Gaussian random variables is provided in this note.
We propose Mecke-Palm formulas for multiple integrals with respect to a Poisson random measure interlaced with its intensity measure. We apply such formulas to multiple mixed Lévy systems of Lévy processes and obtain moment formulas for products of interlaced multiple Poisson integrals.
We present the product formula for complex multiple Wiener-Ito integrals. As applications, we show the Ustunel-Zakai independent criterion, the Nourdin-Rosinski asymptotic moment-independent criterion and joint convergence criterion for complex multiple Wiener-Ito integrals.
In this paper, we obtain explicit product and moment formulas for products of iterated integrals generated by families of square integrable martingales associated with an arbitrary Lévy process. We propose a new approach applying the theory of compensated-covariation stable families of martingales. Our main tool is a representation formula for products of elements of a compensated-covariation stable family, which enables to consider Lévy processes, with both jumps and Gaussian part.
Recursions for moments of multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration are derived. It turns out that the $k$-th (mixed) moments and the $k$-th (mixed) central moments are polynomials of the initial value of the process, and their degree are at most $k$ and $\lfloor k/2 \rfloor$, respectively.
We prove a formula to express multivariate monotone cumulants of random variables in terms of their moments by using a Hopf algebra of decorated Schröder trees.
We revisit the foundational Moment Formula proved by Roger Lee fifteen years ago. We show that when the underlying stock price martingale admits finite log-moments E[|log(S)|^q] for some positive q, the arbitrage-free growth in the left wing of the implied volatility smile is less constrained than Lee's bound. The result is rationalised by a market trading discretely monitored variance swaps wherein the payoff is a function of squared log-returns, and requires no assumption for the underlying martingale to admit any negative moment. In this respect, the result can derived from a model-independ…
This survey provides a unified discussion of multiple integrals, moments, cumulants and diagram formulae associated with functionals of completely random measures. Our approach is combinatorial, as it is based on the algebraic formalism of partition lattices and Möbius functions. Gaussian and Poisson measures are treated in great detail. We also present several combinatorial interpretations of some recent CLTs involving sequences of random variables belonging to a fixed Wiener chaos.
Using a change of basis in the algebra of symmetric functions, we compute the moments of the Hermitian Jacobi process. After a careful arrangement of the terms and the evaluation of the determinant of an `almost upper-triangular' matrix, we end up with a moment formula which is considerably simpler than the one derived in \cite{Del-Dem}. As an application, we propose the Hermitian Jacobi process as a dynamical model for optical fibers MIMO channels and compute its Shannon capacity for small enough power at the transmitter. Moreover, when the size of the Hermitian Jacobi process is larger than …
