We study some comparison between a bilinear cohomology pairing in local coefficients and the Blanchfield pairing of a knot. We show that the former pairing is an $S$-equivalent invariant, and give a criterion to a relation between the two pairings. We also observe that the pairings of some knots are equivalent, and that the pairings of other knots are not equivalent.
We prove a decomposition formula for twisted Blanchfield pairings of 3-manifolds. As an application we show that the twisted Blanchfield pairing of a 3-manifold obtained from a 3-manifold Y with a representation $ϕ: Z[π_1(Y)] \to R$, infected by a knot J along a curve $η$ with $ϕ(η) \neq 1$, splits orthogonally as the sum of the twisted Blanchfield pairing of Y and the ordinary Blanchfield pairing of the knot J, with the latter tensored up from $Z[t,t^{-1}]$ to R.
We calculate Blanchfield pairings of 3-manifolds. In particular, we give a formula for the Blanchfield pairing of a fibred 3-manifold and we give a new proof that the Blanchfield pairing of a knot can be expressed in terms of a Seifert matrix.
It is well known that the Blanchfield pairing of a knot can be expressed using Seifert matrices. In this paper, we compute the Blanchfield pairing of a colored link with non-zero Alexander polynomial. More precisely, we show that the Blanchfield pairing of such a link can be written in terms of generalized Seifert matrices which arise from the use of C-complexes.
We give a formula for the duality structure of the 3-manifold obtained by doing zero-framed surgery along a knot in the 3-sphere, starting from a diagram of the knot. We then use this to give a combinatorial algorithm for computing the twisted Blanchfield pairing of such 3-manifolds. With the twisting defined by Casson-Gordon style representations, we use our computation of the twisted Blanchfield pairing to show that some subtle satellites of genus two ribbon knots yield non-slice knots. The construction is subtle in the sense that, once based, the infection curve lies in the second derived s…
In a classic paper Zeeman introduced the k-twist spin of a knot K and showed that the exterior of a twist spin fibers over S^1. In particular this result shows that the knot K # -K is doubly slice. In this paper we give a quick proof of Zeeman's result. The k-twist spin of K also gives rise to two metabolizers for K # -K and we determine these two metabolizers precisely.
Given a link $L$, the Blanchfield pairing $\operatorname{Bl}(L)$ is a pairing which is defined on the torsion submodule of the Alexander module of $L$. In some particular cases, namely if $L$ is a boundary link or if the Alexander module of $L$ is torsion, $\operatorname{Bl}(L)$ can be computed explicitly; however no formula is known in general. In this article, we compute the Blanchfield pairing of any link, generalizing the aforementioned results. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof that the Blanchfield pairing is hermitian. Finally, we also obtain short proofs of several properties of $\o…
We establish homotopy ribbon concordance obstructions coming from the Blanchfield form and Levine-Tristram signatures. Then, as an application of twisted Alexander polynomials, we show that for every knot K with nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exists an infinite family of knots that are all concordant to K and have the same Blanchfield form as K, such that no pair of knots in that family is homotopy ribbon concordant.
We introduce a new technique for showing classical knots and links are not slice. As one application we resolve a long-standing question as to whether certain natural families of knots contain topologically slice knots. We also present a simpler proof of the result of Cochran-Teichner that the successive quotients of the integral terms of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of the knot concordance group have rank 1. For links we have similar results. We show that the iterated Bing doubles of many algebraically slice knots are not topologically slice. Some of the proofs do not use the existence…
Novikov initiated the study of the algebraic properties of quadratic forms over polynomial extensions by a far-reaching analogue of the Pontrjagin-Thom transversality construction of a Seifert surface of a knot and the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior. In this paper the analogy is applied to explain the relationship between the Seifert forms over a ring with involution and Blanchfield forms over the Laurent polynomial extension.
In this article, we give a classification of Alexander modules of null-homologous knots in rational homology spheres. We characterize these modules A equipped with their Blanchfield forms $ϕ$, and the modules A such that there is a unique isomorphism class of $(A,ϕ)$, and we prove that for the other modules A, there are infinitely many such classes. We realise all these $(A,ϕ)$ by explicit knots in rational homology spheres.
In this survey article we present connections between Picard--Lefschetz invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities and Blanchfield forms for links. We emphasize the unifying role of Hermitian Variation Structures introduced by Némethi.
We define the twisted Blanchfield pairing of a symmetric triad of chain complexes over a group ring Z[G], together with a unitary representation of G over an Ore domain with involution. We prove that the pairing is sesquilinear, and we prove that it is hermitian and nonsingular under certain extra conditions. A twisted Blanchfield pairing is then associated to a 3-manifold together with a decomposition of its boundary into two pieces and a unitary representation of its fundamental group.
We study cobordisms and cobordisms rel boundary of PL locally-flat disk knots $D^{n-2}\into D^n$. Cobordisms of disk knots that do not fix the boundary sphere knots are easily classified by the cobordism properties of these boundaries, and any two even-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundary knots are cobordant rel boundary. However, the cobordism rel boundary theory of odd-dimensional disk knots is more subtle. Generalizing results of Levine on cobordism of sphere knots, we define disk knot Seifert matrices and show that two higher-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundaries are cob…
In 1997, T. Cochran, K. Orr, and P. Teichner defined a filtration {F_n} of the classical knot concordance group C. The filtration is important because of its strong connection to the classification of topological 4-manifolds. Here we introduce new techniques for studying C and use them to prove that, for each natural number n, the abelian group F_n/F_{n.5} has infinite rank. We establish the same result for the corresponding filtration of the smooth concordance group. We also resolve a long-standing question as to whether certain natural families of knots, first considered by Casson-Gordon and…
This is the first paper in a series of three devoted to studying twisted linking forms of knots and three-manifolds. Its function is to provide the algebraic foundations for the next two papers by describing how to define and calculate signature invariants associated to a linking form $M\times M\to\mathbb{F}(t)/\mathbb{F}[t^{\pm1}]$ for $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C}$, where $M$ is a torsion $\mathbb{F}[t^{\pm 1}]$-module. Along the way, we classify such linking forms up to isometry and Witt equivalence and study whether they can be represented by matrices.
Recently Kearton showed that any Seifert matrix of a knot is S--equivalent to the Seifert matrix of a prime knot. We show in this note that such a matrix is in fact S--equivalent to the Seifert matrix of a hyperbolic knot. This result follows from reinterpreting this problem in terms of Blanchfield pairings and by applying results of Kawauchi.
In [BF12] the authors associated to a knot K an invariant n_R(K) which is defined using the Blanchfield form and which gives a lower bound on the unknotting number. In this paper we express n_R(K) in terms of Levine-Tristram signatures and nullities of K. In the proof we also show that the Blanchfield form with real coefficients is diagonalizable.
In this paper we survey some work on representations of $B_n$ given by the induced action on a homology module of some space. One of these, called the Lawrence-Krammer representation, recently came to prominence when it was shown to be faithful for all $n$. We will outline the methods used, applying them to a closely related representation for which the proof is slightly easier. The main tool is the Blanchfield pairing, a sesquilinear pairing between elements of relative homology. We discuss two other applications of the Blanchfield pairing, namely a proof that the Burau representation is not …
This paper concerns twisted signature invariants of knots and 3-manifolds. In the fibered case, we reduce the computation of these invariants to the study of the intersection form and monodromy on the twisted homology of the fiber surface. Along the way, we use rings of power series to obtain new interpretations of the twisted Milnor pairing introduced by Kirk and Livingston. This allows us to relate these pairings to twisted Blanchfield pairings. Finally, we study the resulting signature invariants, all of which are twisted generalisations of the Levine-Tristram signature.
Null Lagrangian-preserving surgeries are a generalization of the Garoufalidis and Rozansky null-moves, that these authors introduced to study the Kricker lift of the Kontsevich integral, in the setting of pairs (M,K) composed of a rational homology sphere M and a null-homologous knot K in M. They are defined as replacements of null-homologous rational homology handlebodies of M\K by other such handlebodies with identical Lagrangian. A null Lagrangian-preserving surgery induces a canonical isomorphism between the rational Alexander modules of the involved pairs, which preserves the Blanchfield …
Let M be a closed oriented 3-manifold with first Betti number one. Its equivariant linking pairing may be seen as a two-dimensional cohomology class in an appropriate infinite cyclic covering of the space of ordered pairs of distinct points of M. We show how to define the equivariant cube Q(K) of this Blanchfield pairing with respect to a framed knot K that generates H_1(M)/Torsion. This article is devoted to the study of the invariant Q. We prove many properties for this invariant including two surgery formulae. Via surgery, the invariant Q is equivalent to an invariant of null-homologous kno…
Using Blanchfield pairings, we show that two Alexander polynomials cannot be realized by a pair of matrices with Gordian distance one if a corresponding quadratic equation does not have an integer solution. We also give an example of how our results help in calculating the Gordian distances, algebraic Gordian distances and polynomial distances.
Let M be a closed oriented 3-manifold with first Betti number one. Its equivariant linking pairing may be seen as a two-dimensional cohomology class in an appropriate infinite cyclic covering of the configuration space of ordered pairs of distinct points of M. We show how to define the equivariant cube Q(M,K) of this Blanchfield pairing with respect to a framed knot K that generates H_1(M;Z)/Torsion. We present the invariant Q(M,K) and some of its properties including a surgery formula. Via surgery, the invariant Q is equivalent to an invariant Q' of null-homologous knots in rational homology …
Given a representation of a link group, we introduce a trilinear form, as a topological invariant. We show that, if the link is either hyperbolic or a knot with malnormality, then the trilinear form equals the pairing of the (twisted) triple cup product and the fundamental relative 3-class. Further, we give some examples of the computation.
We show that bilinear cup products with local coefficients of closed 3-manifolds recover some twisted pairings of infinite covers and the Casson-Gordon local signatures. As a result, we further give diagrammatic computations of the pairings and signatures.
We provide a diagrammatic computation for the bilinear form, which is defined as the pairing between the (relative) cup products with every local coefficients and every integral homology 2-class of every links in the 3-sphere. As a corollary, we construct bilinear forms on the twisted Alexander modules of links.
We give uniform, explicit, and simple face-pairing descriptions of all the branched cyclic covers of the 3-sphere, branched over two-bridge knots. Our method is to use the bi-twisted face-pairing constructions of Cannon, Floyd, and Parry; these examples show that the bi-twist construction is often efficient and natural. Finally, we give applications to computations of fundamental groups and homology of these branched cyclic covers.
Let K and K' be 2-knots. Suppose that K and K' are ribbon-move equivalent. Then the Farber-Levine pairing for K is equivalent to that for K' and the (Z-)torsion part of the first Alexander module of $K$ is isomorphic to that of K' as Z[Z] modules. Let K be a 2-knot which is ribbon-move equivalent to the trivial knot. Then the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer-Casson-Gordon-Ruberman Q/Z-valued \widetildeη-invariants of K for Z_d is zero. (d is a natural number. d>2.).
We discuss the ribbon-move for 2-knots, which is a local move. Let $K$ and $K'$ be 2-knots. Then we have: Suppose that $K$ and $K'$ are ribbon-move equivalent. (1) Let ${\mathrm {Tor}} H_1(\widetilde X_K; {\Z})$ (resp. ${\mathrm {Tor}} H_1(\widetilde X_{K'}; {\Z})$) be the $\Z$-torsion submodule of the Alexander module $H_1(\widetilde X_K; {\Z})$ (resp. $H_1(\widetilde X_{K'}; {\Z})$). Then ${\mathrm {Tor}} H_1(\widetilde X_K; {\Z})$ is isomorphic to ${\mathrm {Tor}} H_1(\widetilde X_{K'}; {\Z})$ not only as $\Z$-modules but also as ${\Z}[t,t^{-1}]$-modules. (2) The Farber-Levine pairing for $…
Given an abelian group $A$ and a Lie group $G$, we construct a bilinear pairing from $A\timesπ_1({\mathcal R})$ to $π_1(G)$, where $\mathcal R$ is a subvariety of the variety of representations $A\to G$. In the case where $A$ is the peripheral subgroup of a torus or two-bridge knot group, $G=S^1$ and $\mathcal R$ is a certain variety of representations arising from suitable SU(2)-representations of the knot group, we show that this pairing is not identically zero. We discuss the consequences of this result for the SU(2)-representations of fundamental groups of manifolds obtained by Dehn surger…
