This is the second in a two-part paper devoted to studying entanglement entropy and edge modes in the A model topological string theory. This theory enjoys a gauge-string (Gopakumar-Vafa) duality which is a topological analogue of AdS/CFT. In part 1, we defined a notion of generalized entropy for the topological closed string theory on the resolved conifold. We provided a canonical interpretation of the generalized entropy in terms of the q-deformed entanglement entropy of the Hartle-Hawking state. We found string edge modes transforming under a quantum group symmetry and interpreted them as entanglement branes. In this work, we provide the dual Chern-Simons gauge theory description. Using Gopakumar-Vafa duality, we map the closed string theory Hartle-Hawking state to a Chern-Simons theory state containing a superposition of Wilson loops. These Wilson loops are dual to closed string worldsheets that determine the partition function of the resolved conifold. We show that the undeformed entanglement entropy due to cutting these Wilson loops reproduces the bulk generalized entropy and therefore captures the entanglement underlying the bulk spacetime. Finally, we show that under the Gopakumar-Vafa duality, the bulk entanglement branes are mapped to a configuration of topological D-branes, and the non-local entanglement boundary condition in the bulk is mapped to a local boundary condition in the gauge theory dual. This suggests that the geometric transition underlying the gauge-string duality may also be responsible for the emergence of entanglement branes.
We extend the string model building rules for the construction of chiral supersymmetric Type I compactifications on smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds. These models contain stacks of D9-branes endowed with general stable U(n) bundles on their world-volume and D5-branes wrapping holomorphic curves on the Calabi-Yau.
We discuss chiral supersymmetric compactifications of the SO(32) heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with direct sums of stable bundles with structure group U(n). In addition we allow for non-perturbative heterotic five-branes. These models are S-dual to Type I compactifications with D9- and D5-branes, which by themselves are mirror symmetric to general intersecting D6-brane models. For the construction of concrete examples we consider elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with SU(n) bundles given by the spectral cover construction. The U(n) bundles are obtained via twisting …
The low energy effective action describing the standard Kaluza-Klein reduction of heterotic string theory on a d-torus possesses a manifest O(d,d+16) symmetry. We consider generalized Scherk-Schwarz reductions of the heterotic string to construct massive gauged supergravities. We show that the resulting action can still be written in a manifestly O(d,d+16) invariant form, however, the U-duality transformations also act on the mass parameters. The latter play the dual role of defining the scalar potential and the nonabelian structure constants. We conjecture that just as for the standard reduct…
We analyze the fate of excitations in regions of closed string tachyon condensate, a question crucial for understanding unitarity in a class of black holes in string theory. First we introduce a simple new example of {\it quasilocal} tachyon condensation in a globally stable AdS/CFT background, and review tachyons' appearance in black hole physics. Then we calculate forces on particles and fields in a tachyon phase using a field theoretic model with spatially localized exponentially growing time dependent masses. This model reveals two features, both supporting unitary evolution in the bulk of…

We define entanglement entropy in string perturbation theory using the orbifold method -- a stringy analog of the replica method in field theory. To this end, we use the Newton series to analytically continue in $N$ the partition functions for string orbifolds on $\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}_N$ conical spaces, known for all odd integer $N$. In the concrete example of ten-dimensional Type-IIB strings, the one-loop partition function can be computed explicitly and the one-loop entropy can be expressed as a manifestly modular invariant series in terms of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function. The convergence …
Progress in identifying the bulk microstate interpretation of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula requires understanding how to define entanglement entropy in the bulk closed string theory. Unfortunately, entanglement and Hilbert space factorization remains poorly understood in string theory. As a toy model for AdS/CFT, we study the entanglement entropy of closed strings in the topological A-model in the context of Gopakumar-Vafa duality. We will present our results in two separate papers. In this work, we consider the bulk closed string theory on the resolved conifold and give a self-consistent factor…

We study the entanglement entropy for open bosonic strings on multiple $Dp$-branes by using the covariant open string field theory. Choosing one of the spatial coordinates which are tangential to the hyperplane on which $Dp$-branes are located, we divide the hyperplane into two halves. By using the string wavefunction in the Fock space representation, we evaluate the entanglement entropy. The entanglement entropy is found to be proportional to the area of $(p-1)$-dimensional boundary of the bipartite hyperplanes and divergent in the ultraviolet (UV) region as well as in the infrared (IR) regio…
What is the meaning of entanglement in a theory of extended objects such as strings? To address this question we consider the spatial entanglement between two intervals in the Gross-Taylor model, the string theory dual to two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at large $N$. The string diagrams that contribute to the entanglement entropy describe open strings with endpoints anchored to the entangling surface, as first argued by Susskind. We develop a canonical theory of these open strings, and describe how closed strings are divided into open strings at the level of the Hilbert space. We derive the …
Entanglement entropy for spatial subregions is difficult to define in string theory because of the extended nature of strings. Here we propose a definition for Bosonic open strings using the framework of string field theory. The key difference (compared to ordinary quantum field theory) is that the subregion is chosen inside a Cauchy surface in the "space of open string configurations". We first present a simple calculation of this entanglement entropy in free light-cone string field theory, ignoring subtleties related to the factorization of the Hilbert space. We reproduce the answer expected…
To understand an emergent spacetime is to understand the emergence of locality. Entanglement entropy is a powerful diagnostic of locality, because locality leads to a large amount of short distance entanglement. Two dimensional string theory is among the very simplest instances of an emergent spatial dimension. We compute the entanglement entropy in the large $N$ matrix quantum mechanics dual to two dimensional string theory, in the semiclassical limit of weak string coupling. We isolate a logarithmically large, but finite, contribution that corresponds to the short distance entanglement of th…
The $α'$-deformed frame-like Double Field Theory (DFT) is a T-duality and gauge invariant extension of DFT in which generalized Green-Schwarz transformations provide a gauge principle that fixes the higher-derivative corrections. It includes all the first order $α'$-corrections of the bosonic and heterotic string low energy effective actions and of the Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach $α'$-geometry. Here we gauge this theory and parameterize it in terms of a frame, a two-form, a dilaton, gauge vectors and scalar fields. This leads to a unified framework that extends the previous construction by including …
We show that the entropy resulting from the counting of microstates of non extremal black holes using field theory duals of string theories can be interpreted as arising from entanglement. The conditions for making such an interpretation consistent are discussed. First, we interpret the entropy (and thermodynamics) of spacetimes with non degenerate, bifurcating Killing horizons as arising from entanglement. We use a path integral method to define the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state in such spacetimes and discuss explicitly its entangled nature and its relation to the geometry. If string theory on …
In local quantum field theory, the entanglement entropy of a region is divergent due to the arbitrary short-wavelength correlations near the boundary of the region. Quantum gravitational fluctuations are expected to cut off the entropy of the ultraviolet modes. Guided by this, we study the entanglement entropy in closed string theory. We factorize the configuration space of closed strings based on the position of the center of mass. We then compute the one-loop Rényi partition functions corresponding to this factorization using the replica method and string field theory. The short-wavelength m…
We invoke the black hole/qubit correspondence to derive the classification of four-qubit entanglement. The U-duality orbits resulting from timelike reduction of string theory from D=4 to D=3 yield 31 entanglement families, which reduce to nine up to permutation of the four qubits.
We derive a perturbative expansion for space time entanglement entropy in string theory by comparing replica trick constructions on the target space and on the worldsheet. Requiring the two approaches to match implies a set of constrains on the amplitudes involved and produces a non-trivial relation among target space and world sheet entanglement. We will be mainly interested in bosonic string on a flat background but also discuss the superstring generalization.
In this paper, we will compute the holographic complexity (dual to a volume in AdS), holographic fidelity susceptibility and the holographic entanglement entropy (dual to an area in AdS) in a two-dimensional version of $AdS$ which is dual to open strings. We will explicitly demonstrate that these quantities are well defined, and then argue that a relation for fidelity susceptibility and time should hold in general due to the $AdS_2$ version of the classical Kepler's principle. We will demonstrate that it holds for $AdS_2$ solution as well as conformal copies metrics in bulk theory of a prescri…
We show that the quantum entanglement can be transmuted to a force using the holographic duality. First, we prove that there is an open string in the spectrum of the holographic fermion coupled with scalar. The string ends at two fermions and its tension vanishes in the limit of zero scalar condensation. We associate such string with a dimer and identify the scalar condensation as the degree of the dimerization. Together with divergently large entanglement entropy, the model is expected to describe the Spin Liquid. As a consistency check, we show that there is a Mott transition as the dimeriza…
We discuss further our proposed modification of the Susskind-Horowitz-Polchinski scenario in which black hole entropy goes over to string entropy as one scales the string length scale up and the string coupling constant down, keeping Newton's constant unchanged. In our approach, based on our 'matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis', 'string entropy' here should be interpreted as the likely entanglement entropy between (approximately) the single long string and the stringy atmosphere which, as we argue, arise in a pure multistring state of given energy in a (rescaled) box. In a previous simple …
We investigate how topological entanglement of Chern-Simons theory is captured in a string theoretic realization. Our explorations are motivated by a desire to understand how quantum entanglement of low energy open string degrees of freedom is encoded in string theory (beyond the oft discussed classical gravity limit). Concretely, we realize the Chern-Simons theory as the worldvolume dynamics of topological D-branes in the topological A-model string theory on a Calabi-Yau target. Via the open/closed topological string duality one can map this theory onto a pure closed topological A-model strin…
We study minimal co-dimension-2 surfaces in the asymptotically flat background of extremal 3-brane solutions in ten-dimensional type IIB supergravity. A conjectured open-closed string duality combined with the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription implies that the area of the surfaces we consider could be interpreted as the entanglement entropy of a dual (3+1)-dimensional large-N, strongly-coupled open string field theory on D3-branes. As the size of the surface is varied we observe a transition from a volume law to an area law in agreement with expectations from non-locality in an open string field the…
In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy in string theory in the simplest setup of dividing the nine dimensional space into two halves. This corresponds to the leading quantum correction to the horizon entropy in string theory on the Rindler space. This entropy is also called the conical entropy and includes surface term contributions. We first derive a new simple formula of the conical entropy for any free higher spin fields. Then we apply this formula to computations of conical entropy in open and closed superstring. In our analysis of closed string, we study the twisted conical entr…
We study the entanglement of closed strings degrees of freedom in order to investigate the microscopic structure and statistics of objects as D-branes. By considering the macroscopic pure state (MPS) limit, whenever the entanglement entropy goes to zero (in such a way that the macroscopic properties of the state are preserved), we show that boundary states may be recovered in this limit and, furthermore, the description through closed string (perturbative) degrees of freedom collapses. We also show how the thermal properties of branes and closed strings could be described by this model, and it…
We derive the extended renormalized entanglement entropy (EREE) and the Fisher information metric in the case of closed bosonic strings in homogeneous plane wave background. Our investigations are conducted within the framework of Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD). The formalism is also illustrated on the example of some particular models in condensed matter physics and the non-equilibrium case for system with dissipations.
The entanglement renormalization flow of a (1+1) free boson is formulated as a path integral over some auxiliary scalar fields. The resulting effective theory for these fields amounts to the dilaton term of non-critical string theory in two spacetime dimensions. A connection between the scalar fields in the two theories is provided, allowing to acquire novel insights into how a theory of gravity emerges from the entanglement structure of another one without gravity.
We study the new class of solutions in linearized open string field theory (OSFT) involving higher-spin modes. Unlike the elementary OSFT solutions (on-shell vertex operators) that, acting on a vacuum, define wavefunctions of pure states (e.g. a tachyon), the solutions that we describe correspond to the reduced density matrices which eigenvalues describe the entanglement between higher-spin modes with different spin values. We compute the entanglement entropy on these OSFT solutions, and the answer is expressed in terms of converging series in inverse weighted partition numbers. In the case of…
The $Lif_{4}^{(2)} \times S^1 \times S^5$ spacetime is an exact solution of $F1-D2-D8$ configuration in type IIA supergravity and can accommodate charged excitations of the fundamental string. By gauge/gravity duality, it is related to an excited state of a non-relativistic QFT with anisotropic Lifshitz scaling symmetry. We study mutual and tripartite information and entanglement wedge cross-section in bulk gravity for boundary subsystems that are disjoint strips of very narrow width. Our work helps understand the nature of entanglement in the QFT excited state, which is in general a mixed one…
In this letter new aspects of string theory propagating in a pp-wave time dependent background with a null singularity are explored. It is shown the appearance of a 2d entanglement entropy dynamically generated by the background. For asymptotically flat observers, the vacuum close to the singularity is unitarily inequivalent to the vacuum at $τ= -\infty$ and it is shown that the 2d entanglement entropy diverges close to this point. As a consequence, the positive time region is inaccessible for observers in $τ=-\infty$. For a stationary measure, the vacuum at finite time is seen by those observ…
We discuss a duality of (0,2) heterotic string vacua which implies that certain pairs of (0,2) Calabi-Yau compactifications on topologically distinct target manifolds yield identical string theories. Some complex structure moduli in one model are interpreted in the dual model as deforming the holomorphic structure of the vacuum gauge bundle (and vice versa). A better understanding of singularity resolution for (0,2) models may reveal that this duality of compactifications on singular spaces is part of a larger story, involving smooth topology-changing processes which interpolate between the (0…

A surprising result in $e^+ e^-$ collisions is that the particle spectra from the string formed between the expanding quark-antiquark pair have thermal properties even though scatterings appear not to be frequent enough to explain this. We address this problem by considering the finite observable interval of a relativistic quantum string in terms of its reduced density operator by tracing over the complement region. We show how quantum entanglement in the presence of a horizon in spacetime for the causal transfer of information leads locally to a reduced mixed-state density operator. For very …
We consider observational limits on a proposed model of the string landscape in inflation. In this scenario, effects from the decoherence of entangled quantum states in long-wavelength modes in the universe result in modifications to the Friedmann Equation and a corresponding modification to inflationary dynamics. Previous work by Holman, Mersini-Houghton, and Takahashi suggested that such effects could provide an explanation for well-known anomalies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), such as the lack of power on large scales and the "cold spot" seen by both the WMAP and Planck satellit…
We consider quantum entanglement between gauge fields in some region of space A and its complement B. It is argued that the Hilbert space of physical states of gauge theories cannot be decomposed into a direct product of Hilbert spaces of states localized in A and B. The reason is that elementary excitations in gauge theories - electric strings - are associated with closed loops rather than points in space, and there are closed loops which belong both to A and B. Direct product structure and hence the reduction procedure with respect to the fields in B can only be defined if the Hilbert space …
The (F1,D2,D8) brane configuration with $Lif_4^{(2)}\times {S}^1\times S^5$ geometry is a known Lifshitz vacua supported by massive $B_{μν}$ field in type IIA theory. This system allows exact IR excitations which couple to massless modes of the fundamental string. Due to these massless modes the solutions have a flow to a dilatonic $Lif_4^{(3)}\times S^1\times S^5$ vacua in IR. We study the entanglement entropy on the boundary of this spacetime for the strip and the disc subsystems. To our surprise net entropy density of the excitations at first order is found to be independent of the typical …
To understand the time-dependent quantum correlation in expanding universes, we study the time-dependent entanglement entropy in the braneworld model. If we take into account a generalized string cloud geometry caused by uniformly distributed open strings, cosmologies on the braneworld result in the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with various matter contents. On the dual field theory side, open strings are reinterpreted as a fundamental matter, while the black hole mass corresponds to the excitation energy of massless gauge bosons. In this work, we show how the string…
In this work, we study the phenomena of quantum entanglement by computing de Sitter entanglement entropy from von Neumann measure. For this purpose we consider a bipartite quantum field theoretic setup in presence of axion originating from ${\bf Type~ II~B}$ string theory. We consider the initial vacuum to be CPT invariant non-adiabatic $α$ vacua state under ${\bf SO(1,4)}$ ismometry, which is characterized by a real one-parameter family. To implement this technique we use a ${\bf S^2}$ which divide the de Sitter into two exterior and interior sub-regions. First, we derive the wave function of…
Introduction of electric field in the D-brane worldvolume induces a horizon in the open string geometry perceived by the brane fluctuations. We study the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and subregion complexity (HSC) in these asymptotically AdS geometries in three, four and five dimensions aiming to capture these quantities in the flavor sector introduced by the D-branes. Both the strip and spherical subregions have been considered. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy associated with the open string horizon, which earlier failed to reproduce the thermal entropy in the boundary, …
We investigate the quantum entanglement in rapidity space of the soft gluon wave function of a quarkonium, in theories with non-trivial rapidity evolutions. We found that the rapidity evolution drastically changes the behavior of the entanglement entropy, at any given order in perturbation theory. At large $N_c$, the reduced density matrices that "resum" the leading rapidity-logs can be explicitly constructed, and shown to satisfy Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK)-like evolution equations. We study their entanglement entropy in a simplified $1+1$ toy model, and in 3D QCD. The entanglement entropy in the…
Some issues in the loop variable renormalization group approach to gauge invariant equations for the free fields of the open string are discussed. It had been shown in an earlier paper that this leads to a simple form of the gauge transformation law. We discuss in some detail some of the curious features encountered there. The theory looks a little like a massless theory in one higher dimension that can be dimensionally reduced to give a massive theory. We discuss the origin of some constraints that are needed for gauge invariance and also for reducing the set of fields to that of standard str…
We recall the existing string theory understanding of black hole entropy and argue it is incomplete but we put forward a modified version, based on the author's 'matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis', which, we claim, gives a more satisfactory understanding and also a resolution to the Information Loss Puzzle. This hypothesis pictures a black hole equilibrium as an, overall pure, state, with given energy, consisting of a black hole with its (mostly matter) atmosphere in a box and identifies the black hole's entropy with the pure state's matter-gravity entanglement entropy. We assume this equ…
Recently it has been observed that the group $E_7$ can be used to describe a special type of quantum entanglement of seven qubits partitioned into seven tripartite systems. Here we show that this curious type of entanglement is entirely encoded into the discrete geometry of the Fano plane. We explicitly work out the details concerning a qubit interpretation of the $E_7$ generators as representatives of tripartite protocols acting on the 56 dimensional representation space. Using these results we extend further the recently studied analogy between quantum information theory and supersymmetric b…
