We study the valence band structure of ReSe$_{2}$ crystals with varying thickness down to a single layer using nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory. The width of the top valence band in the direction perpendicular to the rhenium chains decreases with decreasing number of layers, from 280 meV for the bulk to 61 meV for monolayer. This demonstrates increase of in-plane anisotropy induced by changes in the interlayer coupling and suggests progressively more one-dimensional character of electronic states in few-layer rhenium dichalcogenides.
Morphological instability of a planar surface ([111], [011], or [001]) of an ultra-thin metal film is studied in a parameter space formed by three major effects (the quantum size effect, the surface energy anisotropy and the surface stress) that influence a film dewetting. The analysis is based on the extended Mullins equation, where the effects are cast as functions of the film thickness. The formulation of the quantum size effect (Z. Zhang et al., PRL 80, 5381 (1998)) includes the oscillation of the surface energy with thickness caused by electrons confinement. By systematically comparing th…
A quantitative description of Coulomb interactions is developed for two-dimensional superconducting materials, enabling us to compare intrinsic with external screening effects, such as those due to substrates. Using the example of a doped monolayer of MoS2 embedded in a tunable dielectric environment, we demonstrate that the influence of external screening is limited to a length scale, bounded from below by the effective thickness of the quasi-two-dimensional material and from above by its intrinsic screening length. As a consequence, it is found that unconventional Coulomb-driven superconduct…
Optical properties of thin layers of rhenium diselenide (ReSe$_2$) with thickness ranging from mono- (1 ML) to nona-layer (9 MLs) are demonstrated. The photoluminescence (PL) and Raman scattering were measured at low ($T$=5 K) and room ($T$=300 K) temperature, respectively. The PL spectra of ReSe$_2$ layers display two well-resolved emission lines, which blueshift by about 120 meV when the layer thickness decreases from 9 MLs to a monolayer. A rich structure of the observed low-energy Raman scattering modes can be explained within a linear chain model. The two phonon modes of intralayer vibrat…
We use density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study multiple control parameters for tuning the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CaVO$_3$ thin films. We focus on separating the effects resulting from substrate-induced epitaxial strain from those related to the reduced thickness of the film. We show that tensile epitaxial strain of around 3-4% is sufficient to induce a transition to a paramagnetic Mott-insulating phase. This corresponds to the level of strain that could be achieved on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate. Using free-standing slab models, we then demonstrate…
Interplay between Exchange Interaction and Magnetic Shape Anisotropy of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a non-magnetic matrix for rare-earth-free permanent magnets
Artificial confinement of electrons by tailoring the layer thickness has turned out to be a powerful tool to harness control over competing phases in nano-layers of complex oxides. We investigate the effect of dimensionality on transport properties of $d$-electron based heavy-fermion metal CaCu$_{3}$Ru$_{4}$O$_{12}$. Transport behavior evolves from metallic to localized regime upon reducing thickness and a metal insulator transition is observed below 3 nm film thickness for which sheet resistance crosses $h/e^{2} \sim 25~$k$Ω$, the quantum resistance in 2D. Magnetotransport study reveals a str…
The study of hexagonal silicon polytypes attracts special attention due to their unique physical properties compared to the traditional cubic phase of Si. Thus, for some hexagonal phases, a significant improvement in the emission properties has been demonstrated. In this work, the luminescent properties of SiO2/Si structures irradiated with Kr+ ions at different doses and annealed at 800 °C have been systematically investigated. For such structures, a photoluminescence line at ~ 1240 nm is observed and associated with the formation of hexagonal 9R-Si phase inclusions. It is found that the vari…
Heteroepitaxy offers a new type of control mechanism for the crystal structure, the electronic correlations, and thus the functional properties of transition-metal oxides. Here, we combine electrical transport measurements, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the evolution of the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) in NdNiO$_3$ films as a function of film thickness and NdGaO$_3$ substrate crystallographic orientation. We find that for two different substrate facets, orthorhombic (101) and (011), modifications of t…
Most metallic transition metal dichalcogenides undergo charge density wave (CDW) instabilities with similar or identical ordering vectors in bulk and in single layer, albeit with different critical temperatures. Metallic 1T-TiTe$_2$ is a remarkable exception as it shows no evidence of charge density wave formation in bulk, but it displays a stable $2\times2$ reconstruction in single-layer form. The mechanism for this 3D-2D crossover of the transition is still unclear, although strain from the substrate and the exchange interaction have been pointed out as possible formation mechanisms. Here, b…
Thickness is one of the fundamental parameters that define the electronic, optical, and thermal properties of two-dimensional (2D) crystals. Phonons in molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) were recently found to exhibit unique thickness dependence due to interplay between short and long range interactions. Here we report Raman spectra of atomically thin sheets of WS2 and WSe2 in the mono- to few-layer thickness regime. We show that, similar to the case of MoS2, the characteristic and modes exhibit stiffening and softening with increasing number of layers, respectively, with a small shift of less than 3…
Suppression of the critical temperature in homogeneously disordered superconducting films is a consequence of the disorder-induced enhancement of Coulomb repulsion. We demonstrate that for the majority of thin films studied now this effect cannot be completely explained in the assumption of two-dimensional diffusive nature of electrons motion. The main contribution to the $T_c$ suppression arises from the correction to the electron-electron interaction constant coming from small scales of the order of the Fermi wavelength that leads to the critical temperature shift $δT_c/T_{c0} \sim - 1/k_Fl$…
The research field of two dimensional (2D) materials strongly relies on optical microscopy characterization tools to identify atomically thin materials and to determine their number of layers. Moreover, optical microscopy-based techniques opened the door to study the optical properties of these nanomaterials. We presented a comprehensive study of the differential reflectance spectra of 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, with thickness ranging from one layer up to six layers. We analyzed the thickness-dependent energy of the different exciton…
We investigate thickness series of films of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl in order to study the effect of annealing on the interface with a MgO layer and on the bulk magnetic properties. Our results reveal that while the perpendicular interface anisotropy constant $K^{\perp}_{\rm S}$ is zero for the as-deposited samples, its value increases with annealing up to a value of $1.14\, \pm \,0.07$~mJ/m$^2$ for the series annealed at 320$^{\rm o}$C and of $2.07\, \pm \,0.7$~mJ/m$^2$ for the 450$^{\rm o}$C annealed series owing to a strong modification of the interface during the thermal treatment. Thi…
We present a comparative investigation of the influence of crystallinity and film thickness on the acoustic and thermal properties of 2D layered PtSe2 thin films of varying thickness (0.6-24 nm) by combining a set of experimental techniques, namely, frequency domain thermo-reflectance, low-frequency Raman and pump-probe coherent phonon spectroscopy. We find a 35% reduction in the cross-plane thermal conductivity of polycrystalline films with thickness larger than 12 nm compared to the crystalline films of the same thickness due to phonon grain boundary scattering. Density functional theory cal…
In magnetic topological phases of matter, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is an emergent phenomenon driven by ferromagnetic doping, magnetic proximity effects and strain engineering. The realization of QAH states with multiple dissipationless edge and surface conduction channels defined by a Chern number $\mathcal{C}\geq1$ was foreseen for the ferromagnetically ordered SnTe class of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). From magnetotransport measurements on Sn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te ($0.00\leq{x}\leq{0.08}$)(111) epitaxial thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF$_{2}$ substra…
We have studied the interplay of a giant spin-orbit splitting and of quantum confinement in artificial Bi-Ag-Si trilayer structures. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals the formation of a complex spin-dependent gap structure, which can be tuned by varying the thickness of the Ag buffer layer. This provides a means to tailor the electronic structure at the Fermi energy, with potential applications for silicon-compatible spintronic devices.
The properties of helical thin films have been thoroughly investigated by classical Monte Carlo simulations. The employed model assumes classical planar spins in a body-centered tetragonal lattice, where the helical arrangement along the film growth direction has been modeled by nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor competing interactions, the minimal requirement to get helical order. We obtain that, while the in-plane transition temperatures remain essentially unchanged with respect to the bulk ones, the helical/fan arrangement is stabilized at more and more low temperature when the film…
The electronic properties of hydrogenated, spherical, Si/Ge and Ge/Si core-shell nanocrystals with a diameter ranging from 1.8 to 4.0 nm are studied within Density Functional Theory. Effects induced by quantum confinement and strain on the near-band-edge states localization, as well as the band-offset properties between Si and Ge regions, are investigated in detail. On the one hand, we prove that Si(core)/Ge(shell) nanocrystals always show a type II band-offset alignment, with the HOMO mainly localized on the Ge shell region and the LUMO mainly localized on the Si core region. On the other han…
Understanding the operation mode of a two-dimensional (2D) material-based field-effect transistor (FET) is one of the most essential issues in the study of electronics and physics. The existing Schottky barrier-FET model for devices with global back gate and metallic contacts overemphasizes the metal-2D contact effect, and the widely observed residual conductance cannot be explained by this model. Here, an accumulation-mode FET model, which directly reveals 2D channel transport properties, is developed based on a partial top-gate MoS2 FET with metallic contacts and a channel thickness of 0.65~…
The physical and electronic properties of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials are highly related to their thickness. Therefore, the rapid and accurate identification of single- and few- to multi-layer nanosheets is essential to their fundamental study and practical applications. Here, a universal optical method has been developed for simple, rapid and reliable identification of single- to quindecuple-layer (1L-15L) 2D nanosheets, including graphene, MoS2, WSe2 and TaS2, on Si substrates coated with 90 nm or 300 nm SiO2. The optical contrast differences between the substrates a…

The research on two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets has promoted the development of ultrahigh-density and nanoscale data storage. However, intrinsic ferromagnetism in layered magnets is always subject to many factors, such as stacking orders, interlayer couplings, and the number of layers. Here, we report a magnetic transition from soft to hard ferromagnetic behaviors as the thickness of CrSiTe$_3$ flakes decreases down to several nanometers. Phenomenally, in contrast to the negligible hysteresis loop in the bulk counterparts, atomically thin CrSiTe$_3$ shows a rectangular lo…
Recently, the observation of atomic thin film SnTe with a Curie temperature (Tc) higher than that of the bulk (Chang et. al., Science 353, 274 (2016)) has boosted the research on two-dimensional (2D) ferroic materials tremendously. However, the origin of such phenomenon has yet been thoroughly investigated, which hinder the understanding and design of novel materials with ferroic orders at 2D limit. By using the density functional theory, we investigated the structural and ferroelectrical properties of 2D SnTe, to reveal the thickness dependence. The calculated results demonstrate that the 2D …
X-ray reflectometry (XRR) provides researchers and manufacturers with a non-destructive way to determine thickness, roughness, and density of thin films deposited on smooth substrates. Due to the nested nature of equations modeling this phenomenon, the inter-relation between instrument alignment and parameter estimation accuracy is somewhat opaque. In this study, we intentionally shift incident angle information contained in a high-quality XRR data set and refine this shifted data using an identical structural model to assess the effect angle misalignment has on parameter estimation. We develo…
Among the magnetostrictive alloys the one formed of iron and gallium (called "Galfenol" from its U.S. Office of Naval Research discoverers in the late 90's) is attractive for its low hysteresis, good tensile stress, good machinability and its rare-earth free composition. One of its applications is its association with a piezoelectric material to form a extrinsic multiferroic composite as an alternative to the rare room temperature intrinsic multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$. This study focuses on thin Fe$_{0.81}$Ga$_{0.19}$ films of thickness 5, 10, 20 and 60 nm deposited by sputtering onto glas…
We investigated the complex interaction between a nickel layer and a 4H-SiC substrate under UV-laser irradiation since the early stages of the atomic inter-diffusion. An exhaustive description is still lacking in the literature. A multimethod approach based on Transmission Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Diffraction (electron and X-ray) techniques has been implemented for a cross-correlated description of the final state of the contact after laser irradiation. They detailed the stoichiometry and the lattice structure of each phase formed as well as the Ni/Si alloy profi…
There have been continuous efforts to seek for novel functional two-dimensional semiconductors with high performance for future applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we introduce a successful experimental approach to fabricate monolayer phosphorene by mechanical cleavage and the following Ar+ plasma thinning process. The thickness of phosphorene is unambiguously determined by optical contrast combined with atomic force microscope (AFM). Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the pristine and plasma-treated samples. The Raman frequency of A2g mode stiffens, and …
Ionic layer epitaxy (ILE) has recently been developed as an effective strategy to synthesize nanometer-thick 2D materials with a non-layered crystal structure, such as ZnO. The packing density of the amphiphilic monolayer is believed to be a key parameter that controls the nanosheet nucleation and growth. In this work, we systematically investigated the growth behavior of single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets templated at the water-air interface by an anionic oleylsulfate monolayer with different packing densities. The thicknesses of ZnO nanosheets were tuned from one unit cell to four unit cells,…
Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising for two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting devices and novel phenomena. For 2D applications, their work function, ionization energy, and electron affinity are required as a function of thickness, but research on this is yet to cover the full family of compounds. Here, we present the work function, ionization energy, and electron affinity of few-layer and bulk MX2 (M = Mo, W and X = S, Se, Te) in 2H phase obtained accurately by the density functional theory and GW calculations. For each compound, we consider one-, two-, three-, four-layer, and …
Heavy metal-ferromagnet bilayer structures have attracted great research interest for charge-to-spin interconversion. In this work, we have investigated the effect of the permalloy seed layer on the Ta polycrystalline phase and its spin Hall angle. Interestingly, for the same deposition rates the crystalline phase of Ta deposited on Py seed layer strongly depends on the thickness of the seed layer. We have observed a phase transition from $α$-Ta to ($α$+$β$)-Ta while increasing the Py seed layer thickness. The observed phase transition is attributed to the strain at interface between Py and Ta…
