Observations conducted using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array on the protoplanetary disk around TW Hya show the nitrogen fractionation of HCN molecules in HC$^{14}$N/HC$^{15}$N $\sim$120 at a radius of $\sim$20 AU. In this study, we investigated the physical and chemical conditions that control this nitrogen fractionation process. To this end, a new disk model was developed, in which the isotope-selective photodissociation of N$_2$ and isotope-exchange chemical reactions have been incorporated. Our model can successfully reproduce the observed HCN column density when the elemental abundances of the gas-phase carbon and oxygen are depleted by two orders of magnitude relative to those in the interstellar medium and carbon is more abundant than oxygen ([C/O]$_{\rm elem}>$ 1). The isotope-selective photodissociation of N$_2$ is the dominant nitrogen fractionation process in our models. The observed HC$^{14}$N/HC$^{15}$N ratio, which increases outwards, can also be reproduced by the model by assuming that the small dust grains in the atmosphere of the outer disk are depleted more than those in the inner disk. This is consistent with grain evolution models, according to which small dust grains are continuously replenished in the inner disk due to fragmentation of the large dust grains that radially drift from the outer disk.
The existence of a kinematically defined moving group of stars centred at U = -40, V = -17 km/s referred to as the Hyades Supercluster, has been suggested as the debris of an originally large star forming event, with its core being the present day Hyades open cluster. Using high-resolution UVES spectra, we present elemental abundances for a range of alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture elements for 26 proposed supercluster stars. Our results show that the sample stars display a heterogeneous abundance distribution, with a clump around [Fe/H] = +0.15. We also calculate stellar radial velocities a…
We upgraded the chemical network from the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry 2006 to include isotopes such as ^{13}C and ^{18}O. This includes all corresponding isotopologues, their chemical reactions and the properly scaled reaction rate coefficients. We study the fractionation behavior of astrochemically relevant species over a wide range of model parameters, relevant for modelling of photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). We separately analyze the fractionation of the local abundances, fractionation of the total column densities, and fractionation visible in the emission line ratios. We find tha…
Context. The increased sensitivity and high spectral resolution of millimeter telescopes allow the detection of an increasing number of isotopically substituted molecules in the interstellar medium. The 14N/ 15N ratio is difficult to measure directly for carbon containing molecules. Aims. We want to check the underlying hypothesis that the 13C/ 12C ratio of nitriles and isonitriles is equal to the elemental value via a chemical time dependent gas phase chemical model. Methods. We have built a chemical network containing D, 13C and 15N molecular species after a careful check of the possible fra…
Gas giants accrete their envelopes from the gas and dust of proto-planetary disks, so it is important to determine the composition of the inner few AU, where most giant planets are expected to form. We aim to constrain the elemental carbon and oxygen abundance in the inner disk ($R<$2.3 AU) of TW Hya and compare with the outer disk ($R>2.3$ AU) where carbon and oxygen appear underabundant by a factor of $\sim$50. Archival infrared observations of TW Hya are compared with a detailed thermo-chemical model, DALI. The inner disk gas mass and elemental C and O abundances are varied to fit the infra…
Although ammonia is an abundant molecule commonly observed towards the dense interstellar medium, it has not yet been established whether its main formation route is from gas-phase ion-molecule reactions or grain-surface hydrogen additions on adsorbed nitrogen atoms. Deuterium fractionation can be used as a tool to constrain formation mechanisms. High abundances of deuterated molecules are routinely observed in the dense interstellar medium, with the ratio between deuterated molecules and the main isotopologue enhanced by several orders of magnitude with respect to the elemental D/H ratio. In …
We observed the J = 9-8 and 16-15 rotational transitions of the normal species and five 13C isotopologues of HC5N to study its formation mechanisms toward the cyanopolyyne peak in Taurus Molecular Cloud-1, with the 45-m radio telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory. We detected the five 13C isotopologues with high signal-to-noise ratios between 12 and 20, as well as the normal species. The abundance ratios of the five 13C isotopologues of HC5N are found to be 1.00:0.97:1.03:1.05:1.16 (0.19) for [H13CCCCCN]:[HC13CCCCN]:[HCC13CCCN]:[HCCC13CCN]:[HCCCC13CN]. We do not find any significant differen…
The 15N isotopologue abundance ratio measured today in different bodies of the solar system is thought to be connected to 15N-fractionation effects that would have occured in the protosolar nebula. The present study aims at putting constraints on the degree of 15N-fractionation that occurs during the prestellar phase, through observations of D, 13C and 15N-substituted isotopologues towards B1b. Both molecules from the nitrogen hydride family, i.e. N2H+ and NH3, and from the nitrile family, i.e. HCN, HNC and CN, are considered in the analysis. As a first step, we model the continuum emission in…
Aims: The two stable isotopes of nitrogen, 14N and 15N, exhibit a range of abundance ratios both inside and outside the solar system. The elemental ratio in the solar neighborhood is 440. Recent ALMA observations showed HCN/HC15N ratios from 83 to 156 in six T Tauri and Herbig disks and a CN/C15 N ratio of 323 +/- 30 in one T Tauri star. We aim to determine the dominant mechanism responsible for these enhancements of 15N: low-temperature exchange reactions or isotope-selective photodissociation of N2. Methods: Using the thermochemical code DALI, we model the nitrogen isotope chemistry in circu…

We investigate nitrogen isotope fractionation in forming and evolving molecular clouds using gas-ice astrochemical simulations. We find that the bulk gas can become depleted in heavy nitrogen (15N) due to the formation of 15N-enriched ices. Around the chemical transition from atomic nitrogen to N2, N15N is selectively photodissociated, which results in the enrichment of 15N in atomic nitrogen. As 15N-enriched atomic nitrogen is converted to ammonia ice via grain surface reactions, the bulk gas is depleted in 15N. The level of 15N depletion in the bulk gas can be up to a factor of two compared …
C-fractionation has been studied from a theoretical point of view with different models of time-dependent chemistry, including both isotope-selective photodissociation and low-temperature isotopic exchange reactions. Recent chemical models predict that the latter may lead to a depletion of $^{13}$C in nitrile-bearing species, with $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios two times higher than the elemental abundance ratio of 68 in the local ISM. Since the carbon isotopic ratio is commonly used to evaluate the $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N ratios with the double-isotope method, it is important to study C-fractionation in …
We present stellar parameters and abundances of 11 elements (Li, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn) of 13 F6-K2 main-sequence stars in the young groups AB Doradus, Carina Near, and Ursa Major. The exoplanet-host star ιHorologii is also analysed. The three young associations have lithium abundance consistent with their age. All other elements show solar abundances. The three groups are characterised by a small scatter in all abundances, with mean [Fe/H] values of 0.10 (σ=0.03), 0.08 (σ=0.05), and 0.01 (σ=0.03) dex for AB Doradus, Carina Near, and Ursa Major, respectively. The distribut…
The distributions of deuterated molecules in protoplanetary disks are expected to depend on the molecular formation pathways. We use observations of spatially resolved DCN emission from the disk around TW Hya, acquired during ALMA Science verification with a ~3" synthesized beam, together with comparable DCO+ observations from the Submillimeter Array, to investigate differences in the radial distributions of these species and hence differences in their formation chemistry. In contrast to DCO+, which shows an increasing column density with radius, DCN is better fit by a model that is centrally …
In the context of the IRAM 30m Large Program GEMS, we present a study of thioformaldehyde in several starless cores located in star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus, and Orion. We investigate the influence of the environmental conditions on the abundances of these molecules in the cores, and the effect of time evolution. We have modelled the observed lines of H2CS, HDCS, and D2CS using the radiative transfer code RADEX. We have also used the chemical code Nautilus to model the evolution of these species depending on the characteristics of the starless cores. We derive column densities and …
The isotopic ratio of nitrogen in nearby protoplanetary disks, recently measured in CN and HCN, indicates that a fractionated reservoir of nitrogen is available at the stage of comet formation. This reservoir presents a 3:1 enrichment in 15N relative to the elemental ratio of 330, identical to that between comets and the sun, suggesting that similar processes are responsible for the fractionation in the protosolar nebula (PSN) and in PSN analogs. However, how the fractionation of nitrogen takes place is an open question. Previously obtained HCN/HC15N abundance ratios suggest that HCN may be en…
Deuterated interstellar molecules frequently have abundances relative to their main isotopologues much higher than the overall elemental D-to-H ratio in the cold dense interstellar medium. The H$_3^+$ and its isotopologues play a key role in the deuterium fractionation; however, the abundances of these isotopologues have not been measured empirically with respect to H$_3^+$ to date. Our aim was to constrain the relative abundances of H$_2$D$^+$ and D$_3^+$ in the cold outer envelope of the hot core CRL 2136 IRS 1. We carried out three observations targeting H$_3^+$ and its isotopologues using …
The isotopic ratio of nitrogen measured in primitive Solar System bodies shows a broad range of values, the origin of which remains unknown. One key question is whether these isotopic reservoirs of nitrogen predate the comet formation stage or are posterior to it. Another central question is elucidating the processes that can produce the observed variations in the 14N/15N isotopic ratio. Disks that orbit pre-main-sequence stars provide unique opportunities for observing the chemical content of analogs of the protosolar nebula and therefore for building a comprehensive scenario for the origin o…
CO isotopologue transitions are routinely observed in molecular clouds to probe the column density of the gas, the elemental ratios of carbon and oxygen, and to trace the kinematics of the environment. We aim at estimating the abundances, excitation temperatures, velocity field and velocity dispersions of the three main CO isotopologues towards a subset of the Orion B molecular cloud. We use the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB) technique to analyze and estimate the precision of the physical parameters in the framework of local-thermodynamic-equilibrium excitation and radiative transfer with an additive …
