We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of a Kitaev spin liquid candidate material Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ based on $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance line shape, Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. The first sample A shows signatures of magnetically ordered spins, and exhibits one sharp $^7$Li peak with FWHM increasing significantly below 14~K. $1/T_1^{stretch}$ of this sample displays a broad local maximum at 40~K, followed by a very sharp peak at $T_N = 9\pm1$~K due to critical slowing down of Ir spin fluctuations, a typical signature of magnetic long range order. In order to shed light on the position-by-position variation of $1/T_1$ throughout the sample, we use Inverse Laplace Transform $T_1$ analysis based on Tikhonov regularization to deduce the density distribution function $P(1/T_1)$. We demonstrate that $\sim 60\%$ of Ir spins are statically ordered at the NMR measurement timescale but the rest of the sample volume remains paramagnetic even at 4.2~K, presumably because of structural disorder induced primarily by stacking faults. In order to further investigate the influence of structural disorder, we compare these NMR results with those of a second sample B, which has been shown by transmission electron microscope to have domains with unwanted Ag inclusion at Li and Ir sites within the Ir honeycomb planes. The sample B displays an additional NMR peak with relative intensity of $\sim 17\%$. The small Knight shift and $1/T_1$ of these defect-induced $^7$Li sites and the enhancement of bulk susceptibility at low temperatures suggest that these defects generate domains of only weakly magnetic Ir spins accompanied by free spins, leading to a lack of clear signatures of long-range order. The apparent lack of long-range order could be easily misinterpreted as evidence for the realization of a spin liquid ground state in highly disordered Kitaev lattice.
We report low-temperature (down to $\sim$5 K) Raman signatures of the recently discovered intercalated honeycomb magnet Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, a putative Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate. The Kitaev QSL is predicted to host Majorana fermions as its emergent elementary excitations through a thermal fractionalization of entangled spins $S = 1/2$. We observe evidence of this fractionalization in the low-energy magnetic continuum whose temperature evolution harbours signatures of the predicted Fermi statistics obeyed by the itinerant Majorana quasiparticles. The magnetic Raman susceptibili…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) offers a large variety of novel and extraordinary magnetic and electronic properties in otherwise `ordinary pool' of heavy ion oxides. Here we present a detailed study on an apparently isolated hexagonal 2$H$ spin-chain $d^4$ iridate Sr$_3$LiIrO$_6$ (SLIO) with geometric frustration. Our structural studies clearly reveal perfect Li-Ir chemical order in this compound. Our combined experimental and {\it ab-initio} electronic structure investigations establish a magnetic ground state with finite Ir$^{5+}$ magnetic moments in this compound, contrary to the anticipated non…
The 5d-electron honeycomb compound H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_3$ [K. Kitagawa $et$ $al.$, Nature 554, 341-345 (2018)] exhibits an apparent quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. In this intercalated spin-orbital compound, a remarkable pile up of low-energy states was experimentally observed in specific heat and nuclear magnetic (NMR) spin relaxation. We show that a bond disordered Kitaev model can naturally account for this phenomenon, suggesting that disorder plays an essential role in its theoretical description. In the exactly soluble Kitaev model, we obtain, via spin fractionalization, a random bipartite h…
We use x-ray spectroscopy at Ir L$_3$/L$_2$ absorption edge to study powder samples of the intercalated honeycomb magnet Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. Based on x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements, and exact diagonalization calculations including next-neighbour Ir-Ir electron hoping integrals, we argue that the intercalation of Ag atoms results in a nearly itinerant electronic structure with enhanced Ir-O hybridization. As a result of the departure from the local relativistic $j_{\rm eff}\! = \!1/2$ state, we find that the relative orbital contribution to the magnetic m…
Recently H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been reported as a spin-orbital entangled quantum spin liquid (QSL) [K. Kitagawa et al., Nature {\bf 554}, 341 (2018)], albeit its connection to Kitaev QSL has not been yet identified. To unveil the related Kitaev physics, we perform the first Raman spectroscopy studies on single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ samples. We implement a soft chemical replacement of Li$^+$ with H$^+$ from $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystals to synthesize the single crystal samples of the iridate second generation H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. The Raman spectroscopy can be used to diagnose the Q…
Very recently a quantum liquid was reported to form in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, an iridate proposed to be a close realization of the Kitaev honeycomb model. To test this assertion we perform detailed quantum chemistry calculations to determine the magnetic interactions between Ir moments. We find that weakly bond dependent ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange dominates over other couplings, but still is substantially lower than in Na$_2$IrO$_3$. This reduction is caused by the peculiar position of the inter-layer species: removing hydrogen cations next to a Ir$_2$O$_2$ plaquette increases the Kitaev excha…
We have investigated experimentally and theoretically the series (Na$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$)$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. Contrary to what has been believed so far, only for $x\leq0.25$ the system forms uniform solid solutions. For larger Li content, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, the system shows a miscibility gap and a phase separation into an ordered Na$_{3}$LiIr$_2$O$_{6}$ phase with alternating Na$_3$ and LiIr$_2$O$_6$ planes, and a Li-rich phase close to pure Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. For $x\leq 0.25$ we observe (1) an increase of …
The nature of magnetism in the intercalated honeycomb iridate Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been a subject of recent intensive debate, where the absence or presence of antiferromagnetic order has been reported to be related to possible structural disorder effects and, an enhanced Ir-O hybridization and itinerancy with respect to the parent Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has been suggested as the origin of distinct x-ray spectroscopy features. In the present work we investigate the microscopic nature of the electronic and magnetic properties of Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ via a combination of density functional theory combin…
We present a microscopic study of a doped quantum spin liquid candidate, the hyperkagome Na$_3$Ir$_3$O$_8$ compound by using $^{23}$Na NMR. We determine the intrinsic behavior of the uniform \textbf{q} $ = 0$ susceptibility via shift measurements and the dynamical response by probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Throughout the studied temperature range, the susceptibility is consistent with a semimetal behavior, though with electronic bands substantially modified by correlations. Remarkably, the antiferromagnetic fluctuations present in the insulating parent compound Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ sur…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) often gives rise to interesting electronic and magnetic phases in an otherwise ordinary pool of paramagnetic heavy metal oxides. In presence of strong SOC, assumed to be working in $j$-$j$ coupling regime, 5$d^4$ iridates are generally speculated to possess a nonmagnetic $J_{eff}$~=~0 singlet ground state, which invariably gets masked due to different solid-state effects (e.g. hopping). Here, we try to probe the trueness of the atomic SOC-based proposal in an apparently 1-dimensional system, Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$, possessing a 2$H$ hexagonal structure with well separated Ir…
Hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, has been regarded as a promising candidate material for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid. Here the three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles forms the hyperkagome lattice of Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the local moments of Ir$^{4+}$ ions are described by the pseudospin $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ Kramers doublet. The Heisenberg model on this lattice is highly frustrated and quantum/classical versions have been studied in earlier literature. In this work, we derive a generic local-moment model beyond the Heisenberg limit …
Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as $α$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$ continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin-liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single crystal Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below $T_N$ the spectra show a broad distributio…
We propose a theoretical model for a gapless spin liquid phase that may have been observed in a recent experiment on $\mathrm{H_3Li Ir_2 O_6}$. Despite the insulating and non-magnetic nature of the material, the specific heat coefficient $C/T \sim 1/\sqrt{T}$ in zero magnetic field and $C/T \sim T/ B^{3/2}$ with finite magnetic field $B$ have been observed. In addition, the NMR relaxation rate shows $1/(T_1T) \sim (C/T)^2$. Motivated by the fact that the interlayer/in-plane lattice parameters are reduced/elongated by the hydrogen-intercalation of the parent compound $\mathrm{Li_2 Ir O_3}$, we …
Perovskite iridates of 6H hexagonal structure present a plethora of possibilities in terms of the variety of ground states resulting from a competition between spin-orbit coupling (SOC), hopping, noncubic crystal field ($Δ_{CFE}^{NC}$) and superexchange energy scales within the Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers. Here we have investigated one such compound Ba$_3$CdIr$_2$O$_9$ by x-ray diffraction, dc magnetic susceptibility($χ$), heat capacity($C_p$) and also ${}^{113}$Cd nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We have established that the magnetic ground state has a small but finite magnetic moment on…
We have carried out detailed bulk and local probe studies on the hexagonal oxides Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y) where Ir is expected to have a fractional oxidation state of +4.5. In the structure, Ir-Ir dimers are arranged in an edge shared triangular network parallel to the ab plane. Whereas only weak anomalies are evident in the susceptibility data, clearer anomalies are present in the heat capacity data. Our 45Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lineshape (first order quadrupole split) is symmetric at room temperature but becomes progressively asymmetric with decreasing temperatures. This is suggestiv…
Recent theoretical studies have suggested that Kitaev physics and such effects as formation of a mysterious spin-liquid state can be expected not only in RuCl3 and iridates, but also in conventional $3d$ transition metal compounds. Using DC and AC magnetometry, thermodynamic and $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance measurements (NMR) we studied such a candidate material Na3Co2SbO6. A full phase diagram of Na3Co2SbO6 in a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures is presented. The results demonstrate transformation of the antiferromagnetic structure under the external magnetic field, gradu…
