Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are well-motivated low-energy relics of high-energy extensions of the Standard Model, which interact with the known particles through higher-dimensional operators suppressed by the mass scale $Λ$ of the new-physics sector. Starting from the most general dimension-5 interactions, we discuss in detail the evolution of the ALP couplings from the new-physics scale to energies at and below the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. We derive the relevant anomalous dimensions at two-loop order in gauge couplings and one-loop order in Yukawa interactions, carefully considering the treatment of a redundant operator involving an ALP coupling to the Higgs current. We account for one-loop (and partially two-loop) matching contributions at the weak scale, including in particular flavor-changing effects. The relations between different equivalent forms of the effective Lagrangian are discussed in detail. We also construct the effective chiral Lagrangian for an ALP interacting with photons and light pseudoscalar mesons, pointing out important differences with the corresponding Lagrangian for the QCD axion.
We review searches for closed string axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) in IIB string flux compactifications. For natural values of the background fluxes and TeV scale gravitino mass, the moduli stabilisation mechanism of the LARGE Volume Scenario predicts the existence of a QCD axion candidate with intermediate scale decay constant, f_a ~ 10^9 ... 10^12 GeV, associated with the small cycles wrapped by the branes hosting the visible sector, plus a nearly massless and nearly decoupled ALP associated with the LARGE cycle. In setups where the visible sector branes are wrapping more than the m…
The QCD axion was originally predicted as a dynamical solution to the strong CP problem. Axion like particles (ALPs) are also a generic prediction of many high energy physics models including string theory. Theoretical models for axions are reviewed, giving a generic multi-axion action with couplings to the standard model. The couplings and masses of these axions can span many orders of magnitude, and cosmology leads us to consider several distinct populations of axions behaving as coherent condensates, or relativistic particles. Light, stable axions are a mainstay dark matter candidate. Axion…
We review how axion-like particles (ALPs) naturally emerge in the low-energy effective field theory of string compactifications. We focus on the study of their mass spectrum and couplings, stressing that they depend on the mechanism used to fix the moduli. We present concrete examples where either open or closed string modes behave as QCD axions which do not overproduce cold dark matter. Relativistic ALPs can also be produced by the decay of the lightest modulus which drives reheating. These ALPs contribute to dark radiation and could be detected via axion-photon conversion in astrophysical ma…
Axion like particles (ALPs) are quite generic in many scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model, they are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and appear once any global $U(1)$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The ALPs can gain mass from various non-perturbative quantum effects, such as anomalies or instantons. ALPs can couple to the matter sector incluidng a scalar condensate such as inflaton or moduli field via derivative interactions, which are suppressed by the axion {\it decay constant}, $f_χ$ . Although weakly interacting, the ALPs can be produced abundantly from the coherent osci…
We discuss the problem of constructing models containing an axion and axion-like particles, motivated by astrophysical observations, with decay constants at the intermediate scale ranging from $10^9$GeV to $10^{13}$GeV. We present examples in which the axion and axion-like particles arise accidentally as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of automatic global chiral symmetries, in models having exact discrete symmetries.
Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are among of the most popular candidates for dark matter. Axions are also considered as new physics contributions to the muon g-2. Following the existed interest to ALPs we consider interaction between neutrinos and hypothetical axion-like particles and derive for the first time the probability of neutrino oscillations accounting for their interactions mediated by ALPs. The corresponding effective mixing angle is derived.
We propose a search for long lived axion-like particles (ALPs) in exotic top decays. Flavour-violating ALPs appear as low energy effective theories for various new physics scenarios such as t-channel dark sectors or Froggatt-Nielsen models. In this case the top quark may decay to an ALP and an up- or charm-quark. For masses in the few GeV range, the ALP is long lived across most of the viable parameter space, suggesting a dedicated search. We propose to search for these long lived ALPs in $t\bar{t}$ events, using one top quark as a trigger. We focus on ALPs decaying in the hadronic calorimeter…
Cosmology and particle physics are closer today than ever before, with several searches underway at the interface between cosmology, particle physics, and field theory. The mystery of dark matter (DM) is one of the greatest common unsolved problems between these fields. It is established now based on many astrophysical and cosmological observations that only a small fraction of the total matter content of the universe is made of baryonic matter, while the vast majority is constituted by dark matter. However, the nature of such a component is still unknown. One theoretically well-motivated appr…
We explore models and phenomenology of a photophobic axion-like particle (ALP), an axion whose coupling to photons is maximally suppressed without fine-tuning of the underlying parameters. We demonstrate that photophobia can be a natural UV property of ALP models and determine the irreducible coupling of photophobic ALPs to photons induced by violations of the axion shift symmetry. The signatures of photophobic axions are radically different from those of typical ALPs and are of particular interest for collider-based experiments, for which Standard Model triboson measurements provide a signifi…
The recent detection of the cosmic microwave background polarimeter experiment BICEP2 of tensor fluctuations in the B-mode power spectrum basically excludes all plausible axion models where its decay constant is above $10^{13}$ GeV. Moreover, there are strong theoretical, astrophysical, and cosmological motivations for models involving, in addition to the axion, also axion-like particles (ALPs), with decay constants in the intermediate scale range, between $10^9$ GeV and $10^{13}$ GeV. Here, we present a general analysis of models with an axion and further ALPs and derive bounds on the relativ…
Light pseudoscalars, or axion like particles (ALPs), are much studied due to their potential relevance to the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The most relevant coupling of ALPs from the viewpoint of current experimental searches is to the photon: in this work, we study the generation of this coupling as an effect of quantum corrections, originated from an underlying Lorentz violating background. Most interestingly, we show that the interaction so generated turns out to be Lorentz invariant, thus mimicking the standard ALPs coupling to the photon that is considered in th…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a compelling candidate for dark matter (DM), whose production is associated with the formation of a string-wall network. If walls bounded by strings persist, which requires the potential to have multiple local minima ($N>1$), they must annihilate before they become dominant. They annihilate mostly into gravitational waves and non-relativistic ALPs. We show that for ALPs other than the QCD axion these gravitational waves, if produced at temperatures below 100 eV, could be detected by future cosmological probes for ALPs with mass from $10^{-16}$ to $10^{6}$ eV tha…
X-ray telescopes are an exceptional tool for searching for new fundamental physics. In particular, X-ray observations have already placed world-leading bounds on the interaction between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs). ALPs are hypothetical new ultra-light particles motivated by string theory models. They can also act as dark matter and dark energy, and provide a solution to the strong CP problem. In a background magnetic field, ALPs and photons may interconvert. This leads to energy dependent modulations in both the flux and polarisation of the spectra of point sources shining through…
The axion is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. It appears after the spontaneous breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, which was proposed to solve the strong-CP problem. Other pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, postulated in some extensions of the standard model of particle physics, are called axion-like particles (ALPs) if they share certain characteristics with the axion, in particular a coupling to two photons. Thus far, axion and ALP searches have been unsuccessful, indicating that their couplings have to be extremely weak. However, axions and ALPs could be responsible for some observable effect…
Cosmological precision data can be used to set very strict constraints on Axions and Axion-like particles (ALPs) produced thermally in the big bang. We briefly review the known bounds and propose two new constraints for Axions and ALPs decaying in the early universe, based upon the concomitant dilution of baryon and neutrino densities, using WMAP7 and other cosmological data.
Several laboratory experiments have published limits on axionlike particles (ALPs) with feeble couplings to electrons and masses in the keV-MeV range, under the assumption that such ALPs comprise the dark matter. We note that ALPs decay radiatively into photons, and show that for a large subset of the parameter space ostensibly probed by these experiments, the lifetime of the ALPs is shorter than the age of the universe. Such ALPs cannot consistently make up the dark matter, which significantly affects the interpretation of published limits from GERDA, Edelweiss-III, SuperCDMS and Majorana. Mo…
Using recent supernova models, I revisit the Supernova 1987a constraints on scalar/pseudoscalar Axion-Like-Particles (ALPs). On the basis of the neutrino detections, the luminosity of ALPs must be $\lesssim 5\times10^{52} \,\mathrm{erg}/s$ after the core-bounce, and this bound limits ALPs couplings. Contrary to the QCD axion models where all couplings are $\sim 1/f_a$, it has been shown recently that a radion/dilaton could have far different coupling strength to photons and to nucleons. This fact has raised a need to establish the limits on each coupling independently. The bounds from ALPs emi…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) might constitute the totality of the cold dark matter (CDM) observed. The parameter space of ALPs depends on the mass of the particle $m$ and on the energy scale of inflation $H_I$ , the latter being bound by the non-detection of primordial gravitational waves. We show that the bound on HI implies the existence of a mass scale $m_χ= 10 {\rm \,neV} ÷ 0.5 {\rm \,peV}$, depending on the ALP susceptibility $χ$, such that the energy density of ALPs of mass smaller than $m_χ$ is too low to explain the present CDM budget, if the ALP field has originated after the end of in…
Production of axionlike particles (ALPs) by primordial magnetic fields may have significant impacts on cosmology. We discuss the production of ALPs in the presence of the primordial magnetic fields. We find a region of the ALP mass and photon coupling which realizes the observed properties of the dark matter with appropriate initial conditions for the magnetic fields. This region may be interesting in light of recent indications for the 3.5 keV lines from galaxy clusters. For a small axion mass, a region of previously allowed parameter spaces is excluded by overproduction of ALPs as a hot/warm…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a class of hypothetical pseudoscalar particles which feebly interact with ordinary matter. The hot plasma of core-collapse supernovae is a possible laboratory to explore physics beyond the standard model including ALPs. Once produced, some of the ALPs can be absorbed by the supernova matter and affect energy transfer. In this study, we calculate the ALP emission in core-collapse supernovae and the backreaction on supernova dynamics consistently. It is found that the stalled bounce shock can be revived if the coupling between ALPs and photons is as high as g_{ag}…
Ultraviolet completions for axion-like particles (ALPs) lighter than the neutral pion generically induce ALP-neutral pion mixing, and are therefore sensitive to direct constraints on the mixing angle. For ALPs below the pion mass, we demonstrate that strong and novel bounds on the ALP-pion mixing angle can be extracted from existing rare pion decay data, measured by the PIENU and PIBETA experiments.
Axion-like particles (ALPs) and photons inter-convert in the presence of a magnetic field. At keV energies in the environment of galaxy clusters, the conversion probability can become unsuppressed for light ALPs. Conversion of thermal X-ray photons into ALPs can introduce a step-like feature into the cluster thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum, and we argue that existing X-ray data on galaxy clusters should be sufficient to extend bounds on ALPs in the low-mass region $m_a \lesssim 1 \times 10^{-12}\,{\rm eV}$ down to $M \sim 7\times 10^{11}\, {\rm GeV}$, and that for $10^{11}\, {\rm GeV} < M \les…
We study QCD axion or cosmological axion-like particles (ALPs) in a model inspired by the recent interest in 4-dimensional clockwork models, with the global symmetry being accidentally enforced by a gauge abelian quiver with scalar bifundamental fields. For the QCD axion, we analyze the connection between the degree of protection of the axion mass against gravitational corrections, the explanation of the hierarchy $f_a \ll M_P$ and the number of colored fermions needed to generate anomalous couplings to gluons, all linked together by the underlying gauge symmetries. Based on that model and on …
We propose new searches for axion-like particles (ALPs) produced in flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. This proposal exploits the often-overlooked coupling of ALPs to W bosons, leading to FCNC production of ALPs even in the absence of a direct coupling to fermions. Our proposed searches for resonant ALP production in decays such as $B\rightarrow K^{(*)}a,\,a\rightarrow γγ$ and $K\rightarrow πa, \,a\rightarrow γγ$ could greatly improve upon the current sensitivity to ALP couplings to Standard Model particles. We also determine analogous constraints and discovery prospects for inv…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken global symmetries in high-energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM). This makes them a prime target for future experiments aiming to discover new physics which addresses some of the open questions of the SM. While future high-precision experiments can discover ALPs with masses well below the GeV scale, heavier ALPs can be searched for at future high-energy lepton and hadron colliders. We discuss the reach of the different proposed colliders, focusing on resonant ALP production, ALP production in the decay …

A prominent aspect of the hunt for cold dark matter is looking for light scalar candidates such as axion-like particles (ALPs). The coupling between ALPs and photons allows for the spontaneous decay of ALPs into pairs of photons. It has been previously shown that stimulated ALP decay rates can become significant on cosmic time scales. Furthermore, it has been claimed, in several recent works, that ALPs can gravitationally thermalize and form macroscopic condensates. Consequently, the photon occupation number of ambient populations (like the cosmic microwave background) can receive Bose enhance…
Gravitational waves provide a novel way to probe axions or axion-like particles coupled to a dark photon field, even in the absence of couplings to Standard Model particles. In the conventional misalignment mechanism, the generation of an observable stochastic gravitational wave background, however, requires large axion decay constants. We here investigate the gravitational wave signal generated within the kinetic misalignment scenario, where the axion is assumed to have a large initial velocity. Its kinetic energy then provides a sufficiently high energy budget to generate a detectable gravit…
New light particles produced in supernovae can lead to additional energy loss and a consequent deficit in neutrino production in conflict with the neutrinos observed from Supernova 1987A (SN1987A). Contrary to the majority of previous SN1987A studies, we examine the impact of $Z'$ bosons, axions, and axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with the muons produced in SN1987A. For the first time, we find constraints on generic $Z'$ bosons coupled to muons, and apply our results to particle models including gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ number, $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$, and gauged $B-L$ number, $U(1)_{B-L}$. We const…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudoscalar bosons predicted by string theory. The ALPs have a shallower potential than a quadratic one, which induces the instability and can form the solitonic object called oscillon/I-ball. Although the lifetime of oscillons can be very long for some type of potentials, they finally decay until the present. We perform the numerical lattice simulations to investigate the decay process of oscillons and evaluate the averaged momentum of ALPs emitted from the oscillon decay. It is found that, if oscillons decay in the early universe, the free-streaming length of…
Ultralight axion like particles (ALPs) of mass $m_a\in (10^{-21}\rm{eV}-10^{-22}\rm{eV})$ with axion decay constant $f_a\sim 10^{17}\rm{GeV}$ can be candidates for fuzzy dark matter (FDM). If celestial bodies like Earth and Sun are immersed in a low mass axionic FDM potential and if the ALPs have coupling with nucleons then the coherent oscillation of the axionic field results a long range axion hair outside of the celestial bodies. The range of the axion mediated Yukawa type fifth force is determined by the distance between the Earth and the Sun which fixes the upper bound of the mass of axio…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) with lepton-flavor violating couplings can be probed in exotic muon and tau decays. The sensitivity of different experiments depends strongly on the ALP mass and its couplings to leptons and photons. For ALPs that can be resonantly produced, the sensitivity of three-body decays such as $μ\to 3e$ and $τ\to 3μ$ exceeds by many orders of magnitude that of radiative decays like $μ\to eγ$ and $τ\toμγ$. Searches for these two types of processes are therefore highly complementary. We discuss experimental constraints on ALPs with a single dominant lepton-flavor violating co…
We find that a geometric phase characterizes the phenomenon of mixing of photons with axion-like particles (ALPs). The laboratory observation of such a phase may provide a novel tool able to detect such a mixing phenomenon. We show that the geometric phase is dependent on the axion-like particle mass and coupling constant. We discuss an interferometric experiment able to detect the geometric phase associated to the ALPs-photon mixing.
We investigate the prospects for discovering axion-like particles (ALPs) via a light-by-light (LBL) scattering at two colliders, the future circular collider (FCC-ee) and circular electron-positron collider (CEPC). The promising sensitivities to the effective ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ are obtained. Our numerical results show that the FCC-ee and CEPC might be more sensitive to the ALPs with mass 2 GeV $\sim$ 10 GeV than the LHC and CLIC.
We review the physics case for very weakly coupled ultralight particles beyond the Standard Model, in particular for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs): (i) the axionic solution of the strong CP problem and its embedding in well motivated extensions of the Standard Model; (ii) the possibility that the cold dark matter in the Universe is comprised of axions and ALPs; (iii) the ALP explanation of the anomalous transparency of the Universe for TeV photons; and (iv) the axion or ALP explanation of the anomalous energy loss of white dwarfs. Moreover, we present an overview of ongoing and near-f…
We argue that a large region of so far unconstrained parameter space for axion-like particles (ALPs), where their couplings to the Standard Model are of order $(0.01\!-\!1)\,\mbox{TeV}^{-1}$, can be explored by searches for the exotic Higgs decays $h\to Za$ and $h\to aa$ in Run-2 of the LHC. Almost the complete region in which ALPs can explain the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be probed by searches for these decays with subsequent decay $a\toγγ$, even if the relevant couplings are loop suppressed and the $a\toγγ$ branching ratio is less than~1.
X-ray observations of bright AGNs in or behind galaxy clusters offer unique capabilities to constrain axion-like particles (ALPs). Existing analysis technique rely on measurements of the global goodness-of-fit. We develop a new analysis methodology that improves the statistical sensitivity to ALP-photon oscillations by isolating the characteristic quasi-sinusoidal modulations induced by ALPs. This involves analysing residuals in wavelength space allowing the Fourier structure to be made manifest as well as a machine learning approach. For telescopes with microcalorimeter resolution, simulation…
In the past few years, the search for axion-like particles (ALPs) has grown significantly due to their potential to account for the total abundance of the cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe. The coupling between ALPs and photons allows the spontaneous decay of ALPs into pairs of photons. For ALPs condensed in CDM halos around galaxies, the stimulated decay of ALPs is also possible. In this work, we examine the detectability of the radio emissions produced from this process with forthcoming radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and MeerKAT. Our results, using recent more…
Light pseudoscalars interacting pre-dominantly with Standard Model gauge bosons (so-called axion-like particles or ALPs) occur frequently in extensions of the Standard Model. In this work we review and update existing constraints on ALPs in the keV to GeV mass region from colliders, beam dump experiments and astrophysics. We furthermore provide a detailed calculation of the expected sensitivity of Belle II, which can search for visibly and invisibly decaying ALPs, as well as long-lived ALPs. The Belle II sensitivity is found to be substantially better than previously estimated, covering wide r…
If axion-like particles (ALPs) constitute a major part of dark matter (DM), due to the bosonic nature and a relative small mass, they could behave differently from the point like dark matter particles on the formation of the cosmic structures. When studying the structure formation, it is often useful to consider DM as a special fluid with a given density and a given velocity. ALP fluid obeys a same continuity equation comparing to the point-like collisionless DM but has a different first-order velocity equation. In the linear regime of structure formation, the resulted observational difference…

We consider a muonphilic axion-like-particle (ALP), denoted as $a$, lighter than twice the muon mass. ALPs of this mass range dominantly decay into a pair of photons, induced by a triangular muon loop. Such light muonphilic ALPs are naturally long-lived. At the atmosphere, the ALPs are copiously produced from charged-meson decays in air showers, such as $π^\pm \to μ^\pm νa$, via the ALP-muon coupling $g_{aμμ}$. After propagating tens of kilometers, the ALPs decay with $a\to γγ$ inside large-volume Cherenkov detectors near the Earth's surface, such as Super-Kamiokande (SK). We find the present …
We propose a novel method to search for axion-like particles (ALPs) at particle accelerator experiments (exps). ALPs produced at the target via the Primakoff effect subsequently enter a region with a magnetic field, where they are converted to photons that are then detected. Dubbed Particle Accelerator helioScopes for Slim Axion-like-particle deTection (PASSAT), our proposal uses the principle of the axion helioscope but replaces ALPs produced in Sun with those produced in a target material. Since we rely on ALP-photon conversions, our proposal probes light (slim) ALPs that are otherwise inacc…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model (SM). When ALP mass lies in the range of MeV to GeV, the cosmology and astrophysics will be largely irrelevant. In this work, we investigate such light ALPs through the ALP-strahlung process $pp \to V a (\to γγ)$ at the 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ (HL-LHC). With the photon-jet algorithm, we demonstrate that our approach can probe the mass range of ALPs, which is inaccessible to previous LHC experiments. The obtained result can surpass the existing limits on ALP-photon coupling in t…
One of the fundamental results used in observational cosmology is the distance duality relation (DDR), which relates the luminosity distance, $D_L$, with angular diameter distance, $D_A$, at a given redshift $z$. We employ the observed limits of this relation to constrain the coupling of axion like particles (ALPs) with photons. With our detailed $3D$ ALP-photon mixing simulation in standard $Λ$CDM universe and latest DDR limits observed in Holand \& Barros (2016) we limit the coupling constant $g_ϕ\le 6 \times 10^{-13} GeV^{-1}\left(\frac{nG}{\langle B \rangle_{\rm Mpc}}\right)$ for ALPs of m…
String theory compactifications may generate many light axion-like particles (ALPs) with weak couplings to electromagnetism. In general, a large number of ALPs may exist, with a linear combination having a potentially observable coupling to electromagnetism. The basis in which only one ALP couples to electromagnetism is in general misaligned with the mass basis. This leads to mixing between the `electromagnetic' ALP and a number of `hidden' ALPs that do not interact directly with the photon. The process is analagous to neutrino oscillations. I will discuss the phenomenological consequences of …
The high-energy Universe is potentially a great laboratory for searching new light bosons such as axion-like particles (ALPs). Cosmic sources are indeed the scene of violent phenomena that involve strong magnetic field and/or very long baselines, where the effects of the mixing of photons with ALPs could lead to observable effects. Two examples are archetypal of this fact, that are the Universe opacity to gamma-rays and the imprints of astrophysical magnetic turbulence in the energy spectra of high-energy sources. In the first case, hints for the existence of ALPs can be proposed whereas the s…
It was recently pointed out that very energetic subclasses of supernovae (SNe), like hypernovae and superluminous SNe, might host ultra-strong magnetic fields in their core. Such fields may catalyze the production of feebly interacting particles, changing the predicted emission rates. Here we consider the case of axion-like particles (ALPs) and show that the predicted large scale magnetic fields in the core contribute significantly to the ALP production, via a coherent conversion of thermal photons. Using recent state-of-the-art SN simulations including magnetohydrodynamics, we find that if AL…
