Recent years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in nonlinear multimode optical systems where a host of intriguing effects have been observed that are impossible in single-mode settings. While nonlinearity can provide a rich environment where the chaotic power exchange among thousands of modes can lead to novel behaviors, at the same time, it poses a major challenge in terms of understanding and harnessing these processes to advantage. Over the years, statistical models have been developed to macroscopically describe the response of these complex systems. One of the cornerstones of these theoretical formalisms is the prediction of a photon-photon mediated thermalization process that leads to a Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of mode occupations. Here we report the use of mode-resolved measurement techniques to make the first direct observations of thermalization to a Rayleigh-Jeans power distribution in a multimode optical fiber. We experimentally demonstrate that the underlying system Hamiltonian remains invariant during propagation while power equipartition takes place among degenerate groups of modes - all in full accord with theoretical predictions. Our results may pave the way toward a new generation of high-power optical sources whose brightness and modal content can be controlled using principles from thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.
The wave turbulence theory predicts that a conservative system of nonlinear waves can exhibit a process of condensation, which originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution of classical waves. Considering light propagation in a multimode fiber, we show that light condensation is driven by an energy flow toward the higher-order modes, and a bi-directional redistribution of the wave-action (or power) to the fundamental mode and to higher-order modes. The analysis of the near-field intensity distribution provides experimental evidence of this mechanism. The kinetic …
We present a general theory of thermalization of light in multimode optical fibers, including optical beams with nonzero orbital angular momentum or vortex beams. A generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition is obtained, based on the conservation of the angular momentum. We confirm our predictions by numerical simulations and experiments based on holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. This establishes new constraints for the achievement of spatial beam self-cleaning, giving previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.
We show that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a light field can be thermalized in a nonlinear cylindrical multimode optical waveguide. We find, that upon thermal equilibrium, the maximization of the optical entropy leads to a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution that governs the power modal occupancies with respect to the discrete OAM charge numbers. This distribution is characterized by a temperature that is by nature different from that associated with the longitudinal electromagnetic momentum flow of the optical field. Counterintuitively and in contrast to previous results, we demon…
Although the temperature of a thermodynamic system is usually believed to be a positive quantity, under particular conditions, negative temperature equilibrium states are also possible. Negative temperature equilibriums have been observed with spin systems, cold atoms in optical lattices and two-dimensional quantum superfluids. Here we report the observation of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization of light waves to negative temperature equilibrium states. The optical wave relaxes to the equilibrium state through its propagation in a multimode optical fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system.…
We address the problem of thermalization in the presence of a time-dependent disorder in the framework of the nonlinear Schrödinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation with a random potential. The thermalization to the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution is driven by the nonlinearity. On the other hand, the structural disorder is responsible for a relaxation toward the homogeneous equilibrium distribution (particle equipartition), which thus inhibits thermalization (energy equipartition). On the basis of the wave turbulence theory, we derive a kinetic equation that accounts for the presence of strong disor…
Classical nonlinear waves exhibit a phenomenon of condensation that results from the natural irreversible process of thermalization, in analogy with the quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. Wave condensation originates in the divergence of the thermodynamic equilibrium Rayleigh-Jeans distribution, which is responsible for the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the system. However, achieving complete thermalization and condensation of incoherent waves through nonlinear optical propagation is known to require prohibitive large interaction lengths. Here, we derive a discrete kinetic…

We develop a spatiotemporal mode decomposition technique to study the mode power distribution of ultrashort pulses emerging from long spans of graded-index multimode fiber, for different input laser conditions. We find that beam mode power content in the dispersive pulse propagation regime can be described by the Bose-Einstein law, as a result of the process of power diffusion from linear and nonlinear mode coupling among nondegenerate mode groups. In the soliton regime, the output mode power distribution approaches the Rayleigh-Jeans law
Theoretical studies on wave turbulence predict that a purely classical system of random waves can exhibit a process of condensation, in analogy with the quantum Bose-Einstein condensation. We report the experimental observation of the transition to condensation of classical optical waves propagating in a multimode fiber, i.e., in a conservative Hamiltonian system without thermal heat bath. In contrast to conventional self-organization processes featured by the non-equilibrium formation of nonlinear coherent structures (solitons, vortices...), here the self-organization originates in the equili…
Since its first demonstration in graded-index multimode fibers, spatial beam self-cleaning has attracted a growing research interest. It allows for the propagation of beams with a bell-shaped spatial profile, thus enabling the use of multimode fibers for several applications, from biomedical imaging to high-power beam delivery. So far, beam self-cleaning has been experimentally studied under several different experimental conditions. Whereas it has been theoretically described as the irreversible energy transfer from high-order modes towards the fundamental mode, in analogy with a beam condens…
Because of their massless nature, photons do not interact in linear optical media. However, light beam propagation in nonlinear media permits to break this paradigm, and makes it possible to observe photon-photon interactions. Based on this principle, a beam of light propagating in a nonlinear multimode optical system can be described as a gas of interacting particles. As a consequence, the spatio-temporal evolution of this photon gas is expressed in terms of macroscopic thermodynamic variables, e.g., temperature and chemical potential. Moreover, the gas evolution is subject to experiencing ty…
We establish dispersion engineering rules that allow us to control the thermalization process and the thermal state of an initial beam propagating in a multimode nonlinear photonic circuit. To this end, we have implemented a kinetic equation (KE) approach in systems whose Bloch dispersion relation exhibits bands and gaps. When the ratio between the gap-width to the band-width is larger than a critical value, the KE has stationary solutions which differ from the standard Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) distribution. The theory also predicts the relaxation times above which such non-conventional thermal sta…
Classical nonlinear random waves can exhibit a process of condensation. It originates in the singularity of the Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium distribution and it is characterized by the macroscopic population of the fundamental mode of the system. Several recent experiments revealed a phenomenon of spatial beam cleaning of an optical field that propagates through a graded-index multimode optical fiber (MMF). Our aim in this article is to provide physical insight into the mechanism underlying optical beam self-cleaning through the analysis of wave condensation in the presence of structural disorde…
