Full-reference (FR) point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) has achieved impressive progress in recent years. However, in many cases, obtaining the reference point clouds is difficult, so no-reference (NR) metrics have become a research hotspot. Few researches about NR-PCQA are carried out due to the lack of a large-scale PCQA dataset. In this paper, we first build a large-scale PCQA dataset named LS-PCQA, which includes 104 reference point clouds and more than 22,000 distorted samples. In the dataset, each reference point cloud is augmented with 31 types of impairments (e.g., Gaussian noise, contrast distortion, local missing, and compression loss) at 7 distortion levels. Besides, each distorted point cloud is assigned with a pseudo quality score as its substitute of Mean Opinion Score (MOS). Inspired by the hierarchical perception system and considering the intrinsic attributes of point clouds, we propose a NR metric ResSCNN based on sparse convolutional neural network (CNN) to accurately estimate the subjective quality of point clouds. We conduct several experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed NR metric. The results demonstrate that ResSCNN exhibits the state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance among all the existing NR-PCQA metrics and even outperforms some FR metrics. The dataset presented in this work will be made publicly accessible at http://smt.sjtu.edu.cn. The source code for the proposed ResSCNN can be found at https://github.com/lyp22/ResSCNN.
The real-world applications of 3D point clouds have been growing rapidly in recent years, but not much effective work has been dedicated to perceptual quality assessment of colored 3D point clouds. In this work, we first build a large 3D point cloud database for subjective and objective quality assessment of point clouds. We construct 20 high quality, realistic, and omni-directional point clouds of diverse contents. We then apply downsampling, Gaussian noise, and three types of compression algorithms to create 740 distorted point clouds. We carry out a subjective experiment to evaluate the qua…
Recently, image quality assessment (IQA) has achieved remarkable progress with the success of deep learning. However, the strict pre-condition of full-reference (FR) methods has limited its application in real scenarios. And the no-reference (NR) scheme is also inconvenient due to its unsatisfying performance as a result of ignoring the essence of image quality. In this paper, we introduce a brand new scheme, namely external-reference image quality assessment (ER-IQA), by introducing external reference images to bridge the gap between FR and NR-IQA. As the first implementation and a new baseli…
In this paper, we propose a reduced reference (RR) point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) model named R-PCQA to quantify the distortions introduced by the lossy compression. Specifically, we use the attribute and geometry quantization steps of different compression methods (i.e., V-PCC, G-PCC and AVS) to infer the point cloud quality, assuming that the point clouds have no other distortions before compression. First, we analyze the compression distortion of point clouds under separate attribute compression and geometry compression to avoid their mutual masking, for which we consider 5 point clo…
In the last few years, image processing researchers spent a substantial amount of time and effort developing and perfecting image quality assessment algorithms. Bright-field microscopy, for example, produces images whose quality is a bottleneck for consistent evaluation. For instance, when a stack of images of a specimen is acquired in different focal plane configurations, there will be a set of blurred or partially blurred elements in it, impairing proper evaluation. This work aims to provide an image quality assessment metric, without the presence of a reference image for comparison, to dete…

Image quality assessment(IQA) is of increasing importance for image-based applications. Its purpose is to establish a model that can replace humans for accurately evaluating image quality. According to whether the reference image is complete and available, image quality evaluation can be divided into three categories: full-reference(FR), reduced-reference(RR), and non-reference(NR) image quality assessment. Due to the vigorous development of deep learning and the widespread attention of researchers, several non-reference image quality assessment methods based on deep learning have been propose…

With the wide applications of colored point cloud in many fields, point cloud perceptual quality assessment plays a vital role in the visual communication systems owing to the existence of quality degradations introduced in various stages. However, the existing point cloud quality assessments ignore the mechanism of human visual system (HVS) which has an important impact on the accuracy of the perceptual quality assessment. In this paper, a progressive knowledge transfer based on human visual perception mechanism for perceptual quality assessment of point clouds (PKT-PCQA) is proposed. The PKT…
Due to the existence of quality degradations introduced in various stages of visual signal acquisition, compression, transmission and display, image quality assessment (IQA) plays a vital role in image-based applications. According to whether the reference image is complete and available, image quality evaluation can be divided into three categories: Full-Reference(FR), Reduced- Reference(RR), and Non- Reference(NR). This article will review the state-of-the-art image quality assessment algorithms.
Point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) has become an appealing research field in recent days. Considering the importance of saliency detection in quality assessment, we propose an effective full-reference PCQA metric which makes the first attempt to utilize the saliency information to facilitate quality prediction, called point cloud quality assessment using 3D saliency maps (PQSM). Specifically, we first propose a projection-based point cloud saliency map generation method, in which depth information is introduced to better reflect the geometric characteristics of point clouds. Then, we constr…
The main goal of objective image quality assessment is to devise computational, mathematical models which are able to predict perceptual image quality consistently with subjective evaluations. The evaluation of objective image quality assessment algorithms is based on experiments conducted on publicly available benchmark databases. In this study, our goal is to give a comprehensive evaluation about no-reference image quality assessment algorithms, whose original source codes are available online, using the recently published KADID-10k database which is one of the largest available benchmark da…
Significant progress has been made in the past decade for full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA). However, new large scale image quality databases have been released for evaluating image quality assessment algorithms. In this study, our goal is to give a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art FR-IQA metrics using the recently published KADID-10k database which is largest available one at the moment. Our evaluation results and the associated discussions is very helpful to obtain a clear understanding about the status of state-of-the-art FR-IQA metrics.
Objective image quality assessment deals with the prediction of digital images' perceptual quality. No-reference image quality assessment predicts the quality of a given input image without any knowledge or information about its pristine (distortion free) counterpart. Machine learning algorithms are heavily used in no-reference image quality assessment because it is very complicated to model the human visual system's quality perception. Moreover, no-reference image quality assessment algorithms are evaluated on publicly available benchmark databases. These databases contain images with their c…
We propose a new prototype model for no-reference video quality assessment (VQA) based on the natural statistics of space-time chips of videos. Space-time chips (ST-chips) are a new, quality-aware feature space which we define as space-time localized cuts of video data in directions that are determined by the local motion flow. We use parametrized distribution fits to the bandpass histograms of space-time chips to characterize quality, and show that the parameters from these models are affected by distortion and can hence be used to objectively predict the quality of videos. Our prototype meth…

Understanding semantic information is an essential step in knowing what is being learned in both full-reference (FR) and no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) methods. However, especially for many severely distorted images, even if there is an undistorted image as a reference (FR-IQA), it is difficult to perceive the lost semantic and texture information of distorted images directly. In this paper, we propose a Mask Reference IQA (MR-IQA) method that masks specific patches of a distorted image and supplements missing patches with the reference image patches. In this way, our model o…
The main focus of this document is to evaluate the performance of the existing LDR and HDR metrics on HDR video content which in turn will allow for a better understanding of how well each of these metrics work and if they can be applied in capturing, compressing, transmitting process of HDR data. To this end a series of subjective tests is performed to evaluate the quality of DML-HDR video database [1], when several different representing types of artifacts are present using a HDR display. Then, the correlation between the results from the existing LDR and HDR quality metrics and those from s…

An important scenario for image quality assessment (IQA) is to evaluate image restoration (IR) algorithms. The state-of-the-art approaches adopt a full-reference paradigm that compares restored images with their corresponding pristine-quality images. However, pristine-quality images are usually unavailable in blind image restoration tasks and real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose a practical solution named degraded-reference IQA (DR-IQA), which exploits the inputs of IR models, degraded images, as references. Specifically, we extract reference information from degraded images by dist…
Blind or no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) is a fundamental, unsolved, and yet challenging problem due to the unavailability of a reference image. It is vital to the streaming and social media industries that impact billions of viewers daily. Although previous NR-IQA methods leveraged different feature extraction approaches, the performance bottleneck still exists. In this paper, we propose a simple and yet effective general-purpose no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) framework based on multi-task learning. Our model employs distortion types as well as subjective huma…
Point cloud is one of the most widely used digital formats of 3D models, the visual quality of which is quite sensitive to distortions such as downsampling, noise, and compression. To tackle the challenge of point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) in scenarios where reference is not available, we propose a no-reference quality assessment metric for colored point cloud based on captured video sequences. Specifically, three video sequences are obtained by rotating the camera around the point cloud through three specific orbits. The video sequences not only contain the static views but also include…
Following the advent of immersive technologies and the increasing interest in representing interactive geometrical format, 3D Point Clouds (PC) have emerged as a promising solution and effective means to display 3D visual information. In addition to other challenges in immersive applications, objective and subjective quality assessments of compressed 3D content remain open problems and an area of research interest. Yet most of the efforts in the research area ignore the local geometrical structures between points representation. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing a novel…

We present a novel no-reference quality assessment metric, the image transferred point cloud quality assessment (IT-PCQA), for 3D point clouds. For quality assessment, deep neural network (DNN) has shown compelling performance on no-reference metric design. However, the most challenging issue for no-reference PCQA is that we lack large-scale subjective databases to drive robust networks. Our motivation is that the human visual system (HVS) is the decision-maker regardless of the type of media for quality assessment. Leveraging the rich subjective scores of the natural images, we can quest the …

The present manuscripts proposes a new No Reference Regional Mutual Information based technique for evaluating the quality of an image. We use regional mutual information on subsets of the complete image. Proposed technique is tested on four benchmark natural image databases, and one benchmark synthetic database. In this paper, we propose a no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) method via feature level pseudo-reference (PR) hallucination. The proposed quality assessment framework is grounded on the prior models of natural image statistical behaviors and rooted in the view that the perceptually meaningful features could be well exploited to characterize the visual quality. Herein, the PR features from the distorted images are learned by a mutual learning scheme with the pristine reference as the supervision, and the discriminative characteristics of PR features are further ensured with the tr…
In practical media distribution systems, visual content usually undergoes multiple stages of quality degradation along the delivery chain, but the pristine source content is rarely available at most quality monitoring points along the chain to serve as a reference for quality assessment. As a result, full-reference (FR) and reduced-reference (RR) image quality assessment (IQA) methods are generally infeasible. Although no-reference (NR) methods are readily applicable, their performance is often not reliable. On the other hand, intermediate references of degraded quality are often available, e.…

No-Reference Image Quality Assessment (NR-IQA) aims to assess the perceptual quality of images in accordance with human subjective perception. Unfortunately, existing NR-IQA methods are far from meeting the needs of predicting accurate quality scores on GAN-based distortion images. To this end, we propose Multi-dimension Attention Network for no-reference Image Quality Assessment (MANIQA) to improve the performance on GAN-based distortion. We firstly extract features via ViT, then to strengthen global and local interactions, we propose the Transposed Attention Block (TAB) and the Scale Swin Tr…
A wide variety of image denoising methods are available now. However, the performance of a denoising algorithm often depends on individual input noisy images as well as its parameter setting. In this paper, we present a no-reference image denoising quality assessment method that can be used to select for an input noisy image the right denoising algorithm with the optimal parameter setting. This is a challenging task as no ground truth is available. This paper presents a data-driven approach to learn to predict image denoising quality. Our method is based on the observation that while individua…

To improve the viewer's Quality of Experience (QoE) and optimize computer graphics applications, 3D model quality assessment (3D-QA) has become an important task in the multimedia area. Point cloud and mesh are the two most widely used digital representation formats of 3D models, the visual quality of which is quite sensitive to lossy operations like simplification and compression. Therefore, many related studies such as point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) and mesh quality assessment (MQA) have been carried out to measure the visual quality degradations of 3D models. However, a large part of…
Light field image quality assessment (LF-IQA) plays a significant role due to its guidance to Light Field (LF) contents acquisition, processing and application. The LF can be represented as 4-D signal, and its quality depends on both angular consistency and spatial quality. However, few existing LF-IQA methods concentrate on effects caused by angular inconsistency. Especially, no-reference methods lack effective utilization of 2-D angular information. In this paper, we focus on measuring the 2-D angular consistency for LF-IQA. The Micro-Lens Image (MLI) refers to the angular domain of the LF i…

Traditional video quality assessment (VQA) methods evaluate localized picture quality and video score is predicted by temporally aggregating frame scores. However, video quality exhibits different characteristics from static image quality due to the existence of temporal masking effects. In this paper, we present a novel architecture, namely C3DVQA, that uses Convolutional Neural Network with 3D kernels (C3D) for full-reference VQA task. C3DVQA combines feature learning and score pooling into one spatiotemporal feature learning process. We use 2D convolutional layers to extract spatial feature…
The goal of full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) is to predict the quality of an image as perceived by human observers with using its pristine, reference counterpart. In this study, we explore a novel, combined approach which predicts the perceptual quality of a distorted image by compiling a feature vector from convolutional activation maps. More specifically, a reference-distorted image pair is run through a pretrained convolutional neural network and the activation maps are compared with a traditional image similarity metric. Subsequently, the resulted feature vector is mapped o…

In no-reference 360-degree image quality assessment (NR 360IQA), graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which model interactions between viewports through graphs, have achieved impressive performance. However, prevailing GCN-based NR 360IQA methods suffer from three main limitations. First, they only use high-level features of the distorted image to regress the quality score, while the human visual system (HVS) scores the image based on hierarchical features. Second, they simplify complex high-order interactions between viewports in a pairwise fashion through graphs. Third, in the graph construc…
To support the application scenarios where high-resolution (HR) images are urgently needed, various single image super-resolution (SISR) algorithms are developed. However, SISR is an ill-posed inverse problem, which may bring artifacts like texture shift, blur, etc. to the reconstructed images, thus it is necessary to evaluate the quality of super-resolution images (SRIs). Note that most existing image quality assessment (IQA) methods were developed for synthetically distorted images, which may not work for SRIs since their distortions are more diverse and complicated. Therefore, in this paper…

In this work, we propose a no-reference video quality assessment method, aiming to achieve high-generalization capability in cross-content, -resolution and -frame rate quality prediction. In particular, we evaluate the quality of a video by learning effective feature representations in spatial-temporal domain. In the spatial domain, to tackle the resolution and content variations, we impose the Gaussian distribution constraints on the quality features. The unified distribution can significantly reduce the domain gap between different video samples, resulting in a more generalized quality featu…
Perceptual video quality assessment models are either frame-based or video-based, i.e., they apply spatiotemporal filtering or motion estimation to capture temporal video distortions. Despite their good performance on video quality databases, video-based approaches are time-consuming and harder to efficiently deploy. To balance between high performance and computational efficiency, Netflix developed the Video Multi-method Assessment Fusion (VMAF) framework, which integrates multiple quality-aware features to predict video quality. Nevertheless, this fusion framework does not fully exploit temp…
Generally, humans are more skilled at perceiving differences between high-quality (HQ) and low-quality (LQ) images than directly judging the quality of a single LQ image. This situation also applies to image quality assessment (IQA). Although recent no-reference (NR-IQA) methods have made great progress to predict image quality free from the reference image, they still have the potential to achieve better performance since HQ image information is not fully exploited. In contrast, full-reference (FR-IQA) methods tend to provide more reliable quality evaluation, but its practicability is affecte…
Omnidirectional images, aka 360 images, can deliver immersive and interactive visual experiences. As their popularity has increased dramatically in recent years, evaluating the quality of 360 images has become a problem of interest since it provides insights for capturing, transmitting, and consuming this new media. However, directly adapting quality assessment methods proposed for standard natural images for omnidirectional data poses certain challenges. These models need to deal with very high-resolution data and implicit distortions due to the spherical form of the images. In this study, we…
In this paper, we propose a deep learning based video quality assessment (VQA) framework to evaluate the quality of the compressed user's generated content (UGC) videos. The proposed VQA framework consists of three modules, the feature extraction module, the quality regression module, and the quality pooling module. For the feature extraction module, we fuse the features from intermediate layers of the convolutional neural network (CNN) network into final quality-aware feature representation, which enables the model to make full use of visual information from low-level to high-level. Light field image (LFI) quality assessment is becoming more and more important, which helps to better guide the acquisition, processing and application of immersive media. However, due to the inherent high dimensional characteristics of LFI, the LFI quality assessment turns into a multi-dimensional problem that requires consideration of the quality degradation in both spatial and angular dimensions. Therefore, we propose a novel Tensor oriented No-reference Light Field image Quality evaluator (Tensor-NLFQ) based on tensor theory. Specifically, since the LFI is regarded as a low-rank 4D tensor,…
