In superconducting circuits interrupted by Josephson junctions, the dependence of the energy spectrum on offset charges on different islands is $2e$ periodic through the Aharonov-Casher effect and resembles a crystal band structure that reflects the symmetries of the Josephson potential. We show that higher-harmonic Josephson elements described by a $\cos(2φ)$ energy-phase relation provide an increased freedom to tailor the shape of the Josephson potential and design spectra featuring multiplets of flat bands and Dirac points in the charge Brillouin zone. Flat bands provide noise-insensitive quantum states, and band engineering can help improve the coherence of the system. We discuss a modified version of a flux qubit that achieves in principle no decoherence from charge noise and introduce a flux qutrit that shows a spin-one Dirac spectrum and is simultaneously quote robust to both charge and flux noise.
Increasing the degree of control over physical qubits is a crucial component of quantum computing research. We report a superconducting qubit of fluxonium type with the Ramsey coherence time reaching $T_2^*= 1.48 \pm 0.13 \mathrm{~ms}$, which exceeds the state of the art value by an order of magnitude. As a result, the average single-qubit gate fidelity grew above $0.9999$, surpassing, to our knowledge, any other solid-state quantum system. Furthermore, by measuring energy relaxation of the parity-forbidden transition to second excited state, we exclude the effect of out-of-equilibrium quasipa…
We demonstrate enhanced relaxation and dephasing times of transmon qubits, up to ~ 60 μs by fabricating the interdigitated shunting capacitors using titanium nitride (TiN). Compared to lift-off aluminum deposited simultaneously with the Josephson junction, this represents as much as a six-fold improvement and provides evidence that previous planar transmon coherence times are limited by surface losses from two-level system (TLS) defects residing at or near interfaces. Concurrently, we observe an anomalous temperature dependent frequency shift of TiN resonators which is inconsistent with the pr…
We identify the different contributions to quantum interference in a mesoscopic metallic loop in contact with two superconducting electrodes. At low temperature, a flux-modulated Josephson coupling is observed with strong damping over the thermal length L_{T}. At higher temperature, the magnetoresistance exhibits large h/2e-periodic oscillations with 1/T power law decay. This flux-sensitive contribution arises from coherence of low-energy quasiparticles states over the phase-breaking length L_ϕ. Mesoscopic fluctuations contribute as a small h/e oscillation, resolved only in the purely normal s…
Extending the qubit coherence times is a crucial task in building quantum information processing devices. In the three-dimensional cavity implementations of circuit QED, the coherence of superconducting qubits was improved dramatically due to cutting the losses associated with the photon emission. Next frontier in improving the coherence includes the mitigation of the adverse effects of superconducting quasiparticles. In these lectures, we review the basics of the quasiparticles dynamics, their interaction with the qubit degree of freedom, their contribution to the qubit relaxation rates, and …
We derive a theory for the generation of arbitrary spin-spin interactions in superconducting circuits via periodic time modulation of the individual qubits or the qubit-qubit interactions. The modulation frequencies in our approach are in the microwave or radio frequency regime so that the required fields can be generated with standard generators. Among others, our approach is suitable for generating spin lattices that exhibit quantum spin liquid behavior such as Kitaev's honeycomb model.
Quantum behavior of superconducting nanowires may essentially depend on the employed experimental setup. Here we investigate a setup that enables passing equilibrium supercurrent across an arbitrary segment of the wire without restricting fluctuations of its superconducting phase. The low temperature physics of the system is determined by a combined effect of collective sound-like plasma excitations and quantum phase slips. At $T=0$ the wire exhibits two quantum phase transitions, both being controlled by the dimensionless wire impedance $g$. While thicker wires with $g>16$ stay superconductin…
The existence of vacuum fluctuations is one of the most important predictions of modern quantum field theory. In the vacuum state, fluctuations occurring at different frequencies are uncorrelated. However, if a parameter in the Lagrangian of the field is modulated by an external pump, vacuum fluctuations stimulate spontaneous downconversion processes, creating squeezing between modes symmetric with respect to half of the frequency of the pump. Here we show that by double parametric pumping of a superconducting microwave cavity, it is possible to generate another fundamental type of correlation…
The transition line of superconducting arrays of holes exhibits a rich field structure due to the interference of superconducting states nucleated at the holes edges. We studied by means of resistance measurements their effect on the T*c(H) line as a function of transverse magnetic field using regular arrays of nanofabricated micron size holes. The arrays transition fields are higher than for the bulk. Moreover we found a nontrivial field modulation of the T*c(H) line with an inversion, with increasing field, of the modulation concavity which we assigned to a crossover from a collective to an …
Spin/magnetisation relaxation and coherence times, respectively T_1 and T_2, initially defined in the context of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), are general concepts applicable to a wide range of systems, including quantum bits [1-4]. At first glance, these ideas might seem to be irrelevant to conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors, as the BCS superconducting ground state is a condensate of Cooper pairs of electrons with opposite spins (in a singlet state) [5]. It has recently been demonstrated, however, that a non-equilibrium magnetisation can appear in the quasipartic…
We demonstrate the ability of an epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor nanowire to serve as a field-effect switch to tune a superconducting cavity. Two superconducting gatemon qubits are coupled to the cavity, which acts as a quantum bus. Using a gate voltage to control the superconducting switch yields up to a factor of 8 change in qubit-qubit coupling between the on and off states without detrimental effect on qubit coherence. High-bandwidth operation of the coupling switch on nanosecond timescales degrades qubit coherence.
We study the effect of a finite proximity superconducting (SC) coherence length in SN and SNS junctions consisting of a semiconducting topological insulating wire whose ends are connected to either one or two s-wave superconductors. We find that such systems behave exactly as SN and SNS junctions made from a single wire for which some regions are sitting on top of superconductors, the size of the topological SC region being determined by the SC coherence length. We also analyze the effect of a non-perfect transmission at the NS interface on the spatial extension of the Majorana fermions. Moreo…
When a superconducting ring encloses a magnetic flux that is not an integer multiple of half the quantum of flux, a voltage arises in the direction perpendicular to the temperature gradient. This effect is entirely due to thermal fluctuations. We study the dependence of this voltage on the temperature gradient, flux, position, average temperature, BCS coherence length, thermal coherence length, and the Kramer--Watts-Tobin parameter. The largest voltages were obtained for fluxes close to $0.3Φ_0$, average temperatures slightly below the critical temperature, thermal coherence length of the orde…
We theoretically investigate the influence of designed pulse sequences in restoring quantum coherence lost due to background noise in superconducting qubits. We consider both 1/f noise and Random Telegraph Noise, and show that the qubit coherence time can be substantially enhanced by carefully engineered pulse sequences. Conversely, the time dependence of qubit coherence under external pulse sequences could be used as a spectroscopic tool for extracting the noise mechanisms in superconducting qubits, i.e. by using Uhrig's pulse sequence one can obtain information about moments of the spectral …
Significant improvements in superconducting qubit coherence times have been achieved recently with three-dimensional microwave waveguide cavities coupled to transmon qubits. While many of the measurements in this direction have utilized superconducting aluminum cavities, other recent work has involved qubits coupled to copper cavities with coherence times approaching 0.1 ms. The copper provides a good path for thermalizing the cavity walls and qubit chip, although the substantial cavity loss makes conventional dispersive qubit measurements challenging. We are exploring various approaches for i…
A superconducting phase with an extremely low carrier density of the order of 10^13 cm^-2 is present at LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces. If depleted from charge carriers by means of a gate field, this superconducting phase undergoes a transition into a metallic/insulating state that is still characterized by a gap in the spectral density of states. Measuring and analyzing the critical field of this gap, we provide evidence that macroscopically phase-coherent Cooper pairs are present in the metallic/insulating state. This is characterized by fluctuating vortex-antivortex pairs, and not by individual, …
Superconducting films subject to an in-plane magnetic field exhibit a gapless superconducting phase. We explore the quasi-particle spectral properties of the gapless phase and comment on the transport properties. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of the quantum interference phenomena in this phase to the nature of the impurity scattering. We find that films subject to columnar defects exhibit a `Berry-Robnik' symmetry which changes the fundamental properties of the system. Furthermore, we explore the integrity of the gapped phase. As in the magnetic impurity system, we show that optima…
We present measurements of coherence and successive decay dynamics of higher energy levels of a superconducting transmon qubit. By applying consecutive $π$-pulses for each sequential transition frequency, we excite the qubit from the ground state up to its fourth excited level and characterize the decay and coherence of each state. We find the decay to proceed mainly sequentially, with relaxation times in excess of 20 $μ$s for all transitions. We also provide a direct measurement of the charge dispersion of these levels by analyzing beating patterns in Ramsey fringes. The results demonstrate t…
Significant advances in coherence have made superconducting quantum circuits a viable platform for fault-tolerant quantum computing. To further extend capabilities, highly coherent quantum systems could act as quantum memories for these circuits. A useful quantum memory must be rapidly addressable by qubits, while maintaining superior coherence. We demonstrate a novel superconducting microwave cavity architecture that is highly robust against major sources of loss that are encountered in the engineering of circuit QED systems. The architecture allows for near-millisecond storage of quantum sta…
We introduce the concept of Floquet odd-frequency superconducting pairs and establish their emergence in time-periodic conventional superconductors, where the continuous time-translation invariance is broken. We show that these exotic Cooper pairs are possible because the Floquet modes in time-periodic systems provide an additional index (a Floquet index) that broadens the classification of pair symmetries, with no analog in the static regime. Our results thus put forward a different route for odd-frequency superconducting pairs and pave the way for Floquet engineered dynamical superconducting…
Transportation of Cooper-pairs by a movable single Cooper-pair-box placed between two remote superconductors is shown to establish coherent coupling between them. This coupling is due to entanglement of the movable box with the leads and is manifested in the supression of quantum fluctuations of the relative phase of the order parameters of the leads. It can be probed by attaching a high resistance Josephson junction between the leads and measuring the current through this junction. The current is suppressed with increasing temperature.

We present an experiment where the quantum coherence in the edge states of the integer quantum Hall regime is tuned with a decoupling gate. The coherence length is determined by measuring the visibility of quantum interferences in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a function of temperature, in the quantum Hall regime at filling factor two. The temperature dependence of the coherence length can be varied by a factor of two. The strengthening of the phase coherence at finite temperature is shown to arise from a reduction of the coupling between co-propagating edge states. This opens the way for a…
The last two decades have seen tremendous advances in our ability to generate and manipulate quantum coherence in mesoscopic superconducting circuits. These advances have opened up the study of quantum optics of microwave photons in superconducting circuits as well as providing important hardware for the manipulation of quantum information. Focusing primarily on charge-based qubits, we provide a brief overview of these developments and discuss the present state of the art. We also survey the remarkable progress that has been made in realizing circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) in which supe…
The quality factor and energy decay time of superconducting resonators have been measured as a function of material, geometry, and magnetic field. Once the dissipation of trapped magnetic vortices is minimized, we identify surface two-level states (TLS) as an important decay mechanism. A wide gap between the center conductor and the ground plane, as well as use of the superconductor Re instead of Al, are shown to decrease loss. We also demonstrate that classical measurements of resonator quality factor at low excitation power are consistent with single-photon decay time measured using qubit-re…

Quantum systems are affected by interactions with their environments, causing decoherence through two processes: pure dephasing and energy relaxation. For quantum information processing it is important to increase the coherence time of Josephson qubits and other artificial two-level atoms. We show theoretically that if the coupling between these qubits and a cavity field is longitudinal and in the ultrastrong-coupling regime, the system is strongly protected against relaxation. Vice versa, if the coupling is transverse and in the ultrastrong-coupling regime, the system is protected against pur…
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we address the problem of the superconductor-insulator phase transition (SIT) in homogeneously disordered ultrathin (2-15 nm) films of NbN. Samples thicker than 8 nm, for which the Ioffe-Regel parameter $k_F l \geq 5.6$, manifest a conventional superconductivity : A spatially homogeneous BCS-like gap, vanishing at the critical temperature, and a vortex lattice in magnetic field. Upon thickness reduction, however, while $k_F l$ lowers, the STS revealed striking deviations from the BCS scenario, among which a progressive decrease of the coherence peak…
Analog quantum simulations offer rich opportunities for exploring complex quantum systems and phenomena through the use of specially engineered, well-controlled quantum systems. A critical element, increasing the scope and flexibility of such experimental platforms, is the ability to access and tune in situ different interaction regimes. Here, we present a superconducting circuit building block of two highly coherent transmons featuring in situ tuneable photon hopping and nonlinear cross-Kerr couplings. The interactions are mediated via a nonlinear coupler, consisting of a large capacitor in p…
Artificial lattices of coherently coupled macroscopic states are at the heart of applications ranging from solving hard combinatorial optimisation problems to simulating complex many-body physical systems. The size and complexity of the problems scales with the extent of coherence across the lattice. Although the fundamental limit of spatial coherence depends on the nature of the couplings and lattice parameters, it is usually engineering constrains that define the size of the system. Here, we engineer polariton condensate lattices with active control on the spatial arrangement and condensate …
Quantum bits (qubits) are at the heart of quantum information processing schemes. Currently, solid-state qubits, and in particular the superconducting ones, seem to satisfy the requirements for being the building blocks of viable quantum computers, since they exhibit relatively long coherence times, extremely low dissipation, and scalability. The possibility of achieving quantum coherence in macroscopic circuits comprising Josephson junctions, envisioned by Legett in the 1980's, was demonstrated for the first time in a charge qubit; since then, the exploitation of macroscopic quantum effects i…
The production of entangled pairs of electrons in ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet or normal metal-superconductor-normal metal three-terminal structures has aroused considerable interest in the last twenty years. In these studies, the distance between the contacts is limited by the zero-energy superconducting coherence length. Here, we demonstrate nonlocality and quantum correlations in voltage-biased three-terminal Josephson junctions over the ultralong distance that exceeds the superconducting coherence length by orders of magnitude. The effect relies on} the interplay between the time…

The short coherence lengths characteristic of low-dimensional superconductors are associated with usefully high critical fields or temperatures. Unfortunately, such materials are often sensitive to disorder and suffer from phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter which diverge with temperature $T$, magnetic field $H$ or current $I$. We propose an approach to overcome synthesis and fluctuation problems: building superconductors from inhomogeneous composites of nanofilaments. Macroscopic crystals of quasi-one-dimensional Na$_{2-δ}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ featuring Na vacancy disorder ($δ\a…
A robust cryogenic infrastructure in form of a wired, thermally optimized dilution refrigerator is essential for present and future solid-state based quantum processors. Here, we engineer an extensible cryogenic setup, which minimizes passive and active heat loads, while guaranteeing rapid qubit control and readout. We review design criteria for qubit drive lines, flux lines, and output lines used in typical experiments with superconducting circuits and describe each type of line in detail. The passive heat load of stainless steel and NbTi coaxial cables and the active load due to signal dissi…
We investigate a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based on carbon nanotubes in a fork geometry [J.-P. Cleuziou {\it et al.}, Nature Nanotechnology {\bf 1}, 53 (2006)], involving tunneling of evanescent quasiparticles through a superconductor over a distance comparable to the superconducting coherence length, with therefore ``non local'' processes generalizing non local Andreev reflection and elastic cotunneling. Non local processes induce a reduction of the critical current and modify the current-phase relation. We discuss arbitrary interface transparencies. Such devices in …
We propose a way to control the Josephson energy of a single Josephson junction embedded in one- dimensional superconducting metamaterial: an inhomogeneous superconducting loop, made out of a superconducting nanowire or a chain of Josephson junctions. The Josephson energy is renormalized by the electromagnetic modes propagating along the loop. We study the behaviour of the modes as well as of their frequency spectrum when the capacitance and the inductance along the loop are spatially modulated. We show that, depending on the amplitude of the modulation, the renormalized Josephson energy is ei…
The superconducting phase qubit combines Josephson junctions into superconducting loops and defines one of the promising solid state device implementations for quantum computing. While conventional designs are based on magnetically frustrated superconducting loops, here we discuss the advantages offered by $π$-junctions in obtaining naturally degenerate two-level systems. Starting from a basic five-junction loop, we show how to construct degenerate two-level junctions and superconducting phase switches. These elements are then effectively engineered into a superconducting phase qubit which ope…
Low-loss cavities are important in building high-coherence superconducting quantum computers. Generating high quality joints between parts is crucial to the realization of a scalable quantum computer using the circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) framework. In this paper, we adapt the technique of indium bump bonding to the cQED architecture to realize high quality superconducting microwave joints between chips. We use this technique to fabricate compact superconducting cavities in the multilayer microwave integrated quantum circuits (MMIQC) architecture and achieve single photon quality fac…
In this work, we study a series of tunable flux qubits inductively coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator fabricated on a sapphire substrate. Each qubit includes an asymmetric superconducting quantum interference device which is controlled by the application of an external magnetic field and acts as a tunable Josephson junction. The tunability of the qubits is typically $\pm 3.5$ GHz around their central gap frequency. The measured relaxation times are limited by dielectric losses in the substrate and can attain $T_{1}\sim 8 μs$. The echo dephasing times are limited by flux noise even at op…
We assess independently the impact of high-temperature substrate annealing and metal deposition conditions on the coherence of transmon qubits in the standard 2D circuit-QED architecture. We restrict our study to devices made with aluminum interdigital capacitors on sapphire substrates. We record more than an order-of-magnitude improvement in the relaxation time of devices made with an annealed substrate, independent of whether a conventional evaporator or molecular beam epitaxy chamber was used to deposit the aluminum. We also infer similar levels of flux noise and photon shot noise through d…
The "quantronium" is a superconducting qubit consisting of a split Cooper pair box in which a large tunnel junction is inserted. This circuit has a special bias point where the Larmor frequency is, to first order, insensitive to fluctuations in the bias parameters -- the charge of the box island and the phase of the large junction. At this optimal working point, the state of the qubit can be determined by dispersive measurements that probe the second derivative of the state energy with respect to these bias parameters. We use the quantronium phase degree of freedom to perform a non-linear, dis…
Here we present a theoretical investigation of the Floquet spectrum in multiterminal quantum dot Josephson junctions biased with commensurate voltages. We first draw an analogy between the electronic band theory and superconductivity which enlightens the time-periodic dynamics of the Andreev bound states. We then show that the equivalent of the Wannier-Stark ladders observed in semiconducting superlattices via photocurrent measurements, appears as specific peaks in the finite frequency current fluctuations of superconducting multiterminal quantum dots. In order to probe the Floquet-Wannier-Sta…
Quantum coherence and control is foundational to the science and engineering of quantum systems. In van der Waals (vdW) materials, the collective coherent behavior of carriers has been probed successfully by transport measurements. However, temporal coherence and control, as exemplified by manipulating a single quantum degree of freedom, remains to be verified. Here we demonstrate such coherence and control of a superconducting circuit incorporating graphene-based Josephson junctions. Furthermore, we show that this device can be operated as a voltage-tunable transmon qubit, whose spectrum refl…
We study a superconducting single-charge transistor, where the coherence of Cooper pair tunneling is destroyed by the coupling to a tunable dissipative environment. Sequential tunneling and cotunneling processes are analyzed to construct the shape of the conductance peaks and their dependence on the dissipation and temperature. Unexpected features are found due to a cross-over between two distinct regimes, one `environment-assisted' the other `environment-dominated'. Several of the predictions have been confirmed by recent experiments. The model and results apply also to the dynamics of Joseph…
For the realisation of scalable solid-state quantum-bit systems, spins in semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates. A key requirement for quantum logic operations is a sufficiently long coherence time of the spin system. Recently, hole spins in III-V-based quantum dots were discussed as alternatives to electron spins, since the hole spin, in contrast to the electron spin, is not affected by contact hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins. Here, we report a breakthrough in the spin coherence times of hole ensembles, confined in so called natural quantum dots, in narrow GaAs/AlGa…

In this paper, we present a novel route to tunable spontaneous valley coherence in heterostructures of two dimensional valleytronic materials with other layered materials hosting anisotropic polaritonic modes. We first discuss the dependence of this coherence on the conductivity tensor of the anisotropic part of a general heterostructure and on its geometrical configuration. Subsequently, we propose two implementations - one, using anisotropic plasmons in phosphorene and another with hyperbolic phonon polaritons in MoO3. In both these systems we show for the first time electrostatic tunability…
Mesoscopic low frequency noise in electrical characteristics of disordered conductors is a result of dynamic quantum interference pattern due to motion of defects. This has been firmly established by demonstrating the characteristic partial suppression of the noise amplitude by the dephasing effect of a weak external magnetic field. The spatial correlation of the quantum interference pattern in disordered normal state conductors is invariably limited by the exponential phase relaxation due to inelastic processes. In this paper we develop a quantitative theory of the mesoscopic noise in the s-w…
We examine energy relaxation of non-equilibrium quasiparticles in "dirty" superconductors with the electron mean free path much shorter than the superconducting coherence length. Relaxation of low-energy non-equilibrium quasiparticles is dominated by phonon emission. We derive the corresponding collision integral and find the quasiparticle relaxation rate. The latter is sensitive to the breaking of time reversal symmetry (TRS) by a magnetic field (or magnetic impurities). As a concrete application of the developed theory, we address quasiparticle trapping by a vortex and a current-biased const…
The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect has been accepted and has promoted interdisciplinary scientific activities in modern physics. To observe the AB effect in condensed matter physics, the whole system needs to maintain phase coherence, in a tiny ring of the diameter 1 micrometer and at low temperatures below 1 K. We report that AB oscillations have been measured at high temperature 79 K by use of charge-density wave (CDW) loops in TaS3 ring crystals. CDW condensate maintained macroscopic quantum coherence, which extended over the ring circumference 85 micrometer. The periodicity of the oscillations …
We investigate fluctuations of persistent current (PC) in nanorings both with and without dissipation and decoherence. We demonstrate that such PC fluctuations may persist down to zero temperature provided there exists either interaction with an external environment or an external (periodic) potential produced, e.g., by quantum phase slips in superconducting nanorings. Provided quantum coherence is maintained in the system PC noise remains coherent and can be tuned by an external magnetic flux $Φ_x$ piercing the ring. If quantum coherence gets suppressed by interactions with a dissipative bath…
