We look into the nonparametric regression estimation with additive and multiplicative noise and construct adaptive thresholding estimators based on Laguerre series. The proposed approach achieves asymptotically near-optimal convergence rates when the unknown function belongs to Laguerre-Sobolev space. We consider the problem under two noise structures; (1) { i.i.d.} Gaussian errors and (2) long-memory Gaussian errors. In the { i.i.d.} case, our convergence rates are similar to those found in the literature. In the long-memory case, the convergence rates depend on the long-memory parameters only when long-memory is strong enough in either noise source, otherwise, the rates are identical to those under { i.i.d.} noise.
In this work, we delve into the nonparametric empirical Bayes theory and approximate the classical Bayes estimator by a truncation of the generalized Laguerre series and then estimate its coefficients by minimizing the prior risk of the estimator. The minimization process yields a system of linear equations the size of which is equal to the truncation level. We focus on the empirical Bayes estimation problem when the mixing distribution, and therefore the prior distribution, has a support on the positive real half-line or a subinterval of it. By investigating several common mixing distribution…
The paper presents a multiplicative bias reduction estimator for nonparametric regression. The approach consists to apply a multiplicative bias correction to an oversmooth pilot estimator. In Burr et al. [2010], this method has been tested to estimate energy spectra. For such data set, it was observed that the method allows to decrease bias with negligible increase in variance. In this paper, we study the asymptotic properties of the resulting estimate and prove that this estimate has zero asymptotic bias and the same asymptotic variance as the local linear estimate. Simulations show that our …
In this paper, we consider an unknown functional estimation problem in a general nonparametric regression model with the feature of having both multiplicative and additive noise. We propose two new wavelet estimators in this general context. We prove that they achieve fast convergence rates under the mean integrated square error over Besov spaces. The obtained rates have the particularity of being established under weak conditions on the model. A numerical study in a context comparable to stochastic frontier estimation (with the difference that the boundary is not necessarily a production funct…
This paper presents a nonparametric method for estimating the conditional density associated to the jump rate of a piecewise-deterministic Markov process. In our framework, the estimation needs only one observation of the process within a long time interval. Our method relies on a generalization of Aalen's multiplicative intensity model. We prove the uniform consistency of our estimator, under some reasonable assumptions related to the primitive characteristics of the process. A simulation example illustrates the behavior of our estimator.
This paper is devoted to the nonparametric estimation of the jump rate and the cumulative rate for a general class of non-homogeneous marked renewal processes, defined on a separable metric space. In our framework, the estimation needs only one observation of the process within a long time. Our approach is based on a generalization of the multiplicative intensity model, introduced by Aalen in the seventies. We provide consistent estimators of these two functions, under some assumptions related to the ergodicity of an embedded chain and the characteristics of the process. The paper is illustrat…
We consider a stochastic individual-based model in continuous time to describe a size-structured population for cell divisions. This model is motivated by the detection of cellular aging in biology. We address here the problem of nonparametric estimation of the kernel ruling the divisions based on the eigenvalue problem related to the asymptotic behavior in large population. This inverse problem involves a multiplicative deconvolution operator. Using Fourier technics we derive a nonparametric estimator whose consistency is studied. The main difficulty comes from the non-standard equations conn…
We consider nonparametric estimation of a regression curve when the data are observed with multiplicative distortion which depends on an observed confounding variable. We suggest several estimators, ranging from a relatively simple one that relies on restrictive assumptions usually made in the literature, to a sophisticated piecewise approach that involves reconstructing a smooth curve from an estimator of a constant multiple of its absolute value, and which can be applied in much more general scenarios. We show that, although our nonparametric estimators are constructed from predictors of the…
This article examines density estimation by combining a parametric approach with a nonparametric factor. The plug-in parametric estimator is seen as a crude estimator of the true density and is adjusted by a nonparametric factor. The nonparametric factor is derived by a criterion called local L_2-fitting. A class of estimators that have multiplicative adjustment is provided, including estimators proposed by several authors as special cases, and the asymptotic theories are developed. Theoretical comparison reveals that the estimators in this class are better than, or at least competitive with, …
Discontinuity in density functions is of economic importance and interest. For instance, in studies on regression discontinuity designs, discontinuity in the density of a running variable suggests violation of the no-manipulation assumption. In this paper we develop estimation and testing procedures on discontinuity in densities with positive support. Our approach is built on splitting the gamma kernel (Chen, 2000) into two parts at a given (dis)continuity point and constructing two truncated kernels. The jump-size magnitude of the density at the point can be estimated nonparametrically by two…
We study the performance of nonparametric Bayes procedures for one-dimensional diffusions with periodic drift. We improve existing convergence rate results for Gaussian process (GP) priors with fixed hyper parameters. Moreover, we exhibit several possibilities to achieve adaptation to smoothness. We achieve this by considering hierarchical procedures that involve either a prior on a multiplicative scaling parameter, or a prior on the regularity parameter of the GP.
The multiplicative censoring model introduced in Vardi [Biometrika 76 (1989) 751--761] is an incomplete data problem whereby two independent samples from the lifetime distribution $G$, $\mathcal{X}_m=(X_1,...,X_m)$ and $\mathcal{Z}_n=(Z_1,...,Z_n)$, are observed subject to a form of coarsening. Specifically, sample $\mathcal{X}_m$ is fully observed while $\mathcal{Y}_n=(Y_1,...,Y_n)$ is observed instead of $\mathcal{Z}_n$, where $Y_i=U_iZ_i$ and $(U_1,...,U_n)$ is an independent sample from the standard uniform distribution. Vardi [Biometrika 76 (1989) 751--761] showed that this model unifies …
This paper proposes consistent estimators for transformation parameters in semiparametric models. The problem is to find the optimal transformation into the space of models with a predetermined regression structure like additive or multiplicative separability. We give results for the estimation of the transformation when the rest of the model is estimated non- or semi-parametrically and fulfills some consistency conditions. We propose two methods for the estimation of the transformation parameter: maximizing a profile likelihood function or minimizing the mean squared distance from independenc…
This paper considers adaptive, minimax estimation of a quadratic functional in a nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) model, which is an important problem in optimal estimation of a nonlinear functional of an ill-posed inverse regression with an unknown operator. We first show that a leave-one-out, sieve NPIV estimator of the quadratic functional can attain a convergence rate that coincides with the lower bound previously derived in Chen and Christensen [2018]. The minimax rate is achieved by the optimal choice of the sieve dimension (a key tuning parameter) that depends on the smoothne…
We study random series priors for estimating a functional parameter (f\in L^2[0,1]). We show that with a series prior with random truncation, Gaussian coefficients, and inverse gamma multiplicative scaling, it is possible to achieve posterior contraction at optimal rates and adaptation to arbitrary degrees of smoothness. We present general results that can be combined with existing rate of contraction results for various nonparametric estimation problems. We give concrete examples for signal estimation in white noise and drift estimation for a one-dimensional SDE.
