We report on the consequences of non-uniform exchange in magnetic systems. The quantum mechanical exchange interaction between spins is responsible for the phenomenon of magnetic order, and is generally considered to be uniform across bulk magnetic systems. Partly inspired by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction--also known as antisymmetric exchange--we use a linearly varying exchange interaction along a magnetic strip as a route to spatial inversion symmetry-breaking. We find that, in addition to asymmetric modes and localization, spatially-varying exchange can be used to design nonreciprocal magnetic signal excitation at frequencies that are tunable. Moreover, our work predicts nonreciprocity to occur across a vast range of frequencies up to hundreds of GHz. Such spin wave engineering is a key area of ongoing research in the fields of magnonics and spintronics, which are expected to enable the next generation of communication technology. Analogous nonreciprocity is expected to occur in other wave systems with gradient properties.
The precise determination of critical point is the basis to extract various critical properties of phase transitions. We identify that for two-dimensional inversion asymmetric insulators, with and without time-reversal symmetry, when topological phase transitions take place, all nonvanishing components of band-edge shift current tensor will reverse their signs in a singular way, regardless of what realistic value the temperature takes. This remarkable sign-reversal behavior of band-edge shift current tensor thus can be applied to determine the critical points of various topological phase trans…
The charge inversion phenomenon is studied by molecular dynamics simulations, focusing on size and valence asymmetric salts, and a threshold of surface charge density for charge inversion. The charge inversion criteria by the electrophoretic mobility and the radial distribution functions of ions coincide except around the charge inversion threshold. The reversed electrophoretic mobility increases with the ratio of coion to counterion radii, while it decreases with the ratio of coion to counterion valences. The monovalent salt enhances charge inversion of a strongly charged macroion at small io…
Manipulating spin currents in magnetic insulators is a key technology in spintronics. We theoretically study a simple inversion-asymmetric model of quantum antiferromagnets, where both the exchange interaction and the magnetic field are staggered. We calculate spin currents generated by external electric and magnetic fields by using a quantum master equation. We show that an ac electric field with amplitude $E_0$ leads, through exchange-interaction modulation, to the dc and second-harmonic spin currents proportional to $E_0^2$. We also show that dc and ac staggered magnetic fields $B_0$ genera…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are new forms of quantum matter that are characterized by their insulating bulk state and exotic metallic surface state, which hosts helical Dirac fermions1-2. Very recently, BiTeCl, one of the polar semiconductors, has been discovered by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to be the first strong inversion asymmetric topological insulator (SIATI). In contrast to the previously discovered 3D TIs with inversion symmetry, the SIATI are expected to exhibit novel topological phenomena, including crystalline-surface-dependent topological surf…
The search for inversion asymmetric topological insulators (IATIs) persists as an effect for realizing new topological phenomena. However, so for only a few IATIs have been discovered and there is no IATI exhibiting a large band gap exceeding 0.6 eV. Using first-principles calculations, we predict a series of new IATIs in saturated Group III-Bi bilayers. We show that all these IATIs preserve extraordinary large bulk band gaps which are well above room-temperature, allowing for viable applications in room-temperature spintronic devices. More importantly, most of these systems display large bulk…
We study ultrafast photocurrents in thin films of a model ferromagnetic metal with broken bulk inversion symmetry, the half-metallic Heusler compound NiMnSb, following excitation with an optical pump pulse with photon energy 1.55 eV. Remarkably, in terms of the direction of the sample magnetization M, all photocurrents are found to be a superposition of a component with Rashba- and Dresselhaus-type symmetry. We explain the Dresselhaus bulk photocurrent as follows: Pump-induced electron heating induces an excess of spin μ_s||M, which transfers spin angular momentum into states with Dresselhaus-…
Recent experimental realization of long sought Weyl fermions in non-magnetic crystals has greatly motivated condensed matter physicists to search for materials supporting Weyl fermions. Weyl fermions appear to be very promising for future electronics, often referred as Weyltronics. Here, by means of first-principle calculations, we report a stoichiometric crystal structure of BiSb with broken space-inversion symmetry. This structure is insulating in bulk and has non-trivial band topology. We observe a pressure driven Weyl semi-metallic phase transition in this crystal structure. The obtained W…
The search for strongly inversion asymmetric topological insulators is an active research field because these materials possess distinct properties compared with the inversion symmetric ones. In particular, it is desirable to realize a large Rashba spin-splitting (RSS) in such materials, which combined with the topological surface states (TSS) could lead to useful spintronics applications. In this report, based on first principles calculations, we predict that the heterostructure of BiTeI/Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ is a strong topological insulator with a giant RSS. The coexistence of TSS and RSS in the…
The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in noncentrosymmetric systems leads to various nonuniform chiral magnetic textures. Polarized neutron scattering is a powerful method for investigation such chiral distributions. The most used technique is a small-angle neutrons scattering (SANS). Multilayered magnetic films with the interface induced DMI (iDMI) can't be investigated by SANS because of their small volume. The appropriate technique is a polarized neutron reflectometry. Within the framework of the continuum theory of micromagnetics, we explore the impact of the iDMI on th…
We have studied the magnetic properties of multilayers composed of ferromagnetic metal Co and heavy metals with strong spin orbit coupling (Pt and Ir). Multilayers with symmetric (ABA stacking) and asymmetric (ABC stacking) structures are grown to study the effect of broken structural inversion symmetry. We compare the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy of symmetric Pt/Co/Pt, Ir/Co/Ir multilayers and asymmetric Pt/Co/Ir, Ir/Co/Pt multilayers. First, the interface contribution to the PMA is studied using the Co layer thickness dependence of the effective PMA energy. Comparison of th…
In inversion asymmetric semiconductors, spin-orbit interactions give rise to very effective relaxation mechanisms of the electron spin. Recent work, based on the dimensionally constrained D'yakonov Perel' mechanism, describes increasing electron-spin relaxation times for two-dimensional conducting layers with decreasing channel width. The slow-down of the spin relaxation can be understood as a precursor of the one-dimensional limit.
Ternary cubic perovskite compounds of the form A_(1/3)A'_(1/3)A''_(1/3)BO_3 and AB_(1/3)B'_(1/3)B''_(1/3)O_3, in which the differentiated cations form an alternating series of monolayers, are studied using first-principles methods. Such compounds are representative of a possible new class of materials in which ferroelectricity is perturbed by compositional breaking of inversion symmetry. For isovalent substitution on either sublattice, the ferroelectric double-well potential is found to persist, but becomes sufficiently asymmetric that minority domains may no longer survive. The strength of th…
The transport properties of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are very sensitive to interface modifications. In this work we investigate both experimentally and theoretically the effect of asymmetric barrier modifications on the bias dependence of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in single crystal Fe/MgO-based MTJs with (i) one crystalline and one rough interface and (ii) with a monolayer of O deposited at the crystalline interface. In both cases we observe an asymmetric bias dependence of TMR and a reversal of its sign at large bias. We propose a general model to explain the bias dependence i…
Microscopic mechanism for the Rashba-type band splitting is examined in detail. We show how asymmetric charge distribution is formed when local orbital angular momentum (OAM) and crystal momentum get interlocked due to surface effects. An electrostatic energy term in the Hamiltonian appears when such OAM and crystal momentum dependent asymmetric charge distribution is placed in an electric field produced from an inversion symmetry breaking (ISB). Analysis by using an effective Hamiltonian shows that, as the atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength increases from weak to strong, originally OAM…
We examine the current-induced dynamics of a skyrmion that is subject to both structural and bulk inversion asymmetry. There arises a hybrid type of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which is in the form of a mixture of interfacial and bulk DMIs. Examples include crystals with symmetry classes C$_n$ as well as magnetic multilayers composed of a ferromagnet with a noncentrosymmetric crystal and a nonmagnet with strong spin-orbit coupling. As a striking result, we find that, in systems with a hybrid DMI, the spin-orbit-torque-induced skyrmion Hall angle is asymmetric for the two different …
Using $\vec{k}$$\cdot$$\vec{p}$ theory, we derive an effective four band model describing the physics of the typical two-dimensional topological insulator (HgTe/CdTe quantum well) in the presence of out-of-plane in z-direction inversion breaking and in-plane confining potentials. We find that up to third order in perturbation theory, only the inversion breaking potential generates new elements to the four band Hamiltonian that are off-diagonal in spin space. When this new effective Hamiltonian is folded into an effective two band model for the conduction (electron) or valence (heavy hole) band…
We present a detailed study of the influence of various interactions on the spin quantum tunneling in a Mn12 wheel molecule. The effects of single-ion and exchange (spin-orbit) anisotropy are first considered, followed by an analysis of the roles played by secondary influences, e.g. disorder, dipolar and hyperfine fields, and magnetoacoustic interactions. Special attention is paid to the role of the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinski-Moriya (DM) interaction. This is done within the framework of a 12-spin microscopic model, and also using simplified dimer and tetramer approximations in which the elect…
