We investigate aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly coupled field theories within holography. We establish a hydrodynamic description for anomalous quantum field theories subject to a strong external field for the first time in the literature. Within holography, we explicitly demonstrate which transport coefficients are non-zero due to the chiral anomaly and thus important for the transport. We show that the standard treatment of the hydrodynamics for spontaneously broken translational invariance is more subtle and has to be revised since the description is missing a novel thermodynamic coefficient. Within holographic massive gravity, we lay out a road map for extensions of hydrodynamics to momentum dissipation. Furthermore, we study the imprint of spontaneously broken translations beyond linear response theory in terms of periodically driven strongly coupled quantum field theories. Another important non-equilibrium scenario specially important for the understanding of our universe is quantum gravity in de-Sitter. Recently, the bold claim of the so-called swampland conjectures has attracted great interest since it banishes all stable theories of quantum gravity on de-Sitter with matter into swampland. Within the well-defined framework of the DS/dS correspondence, we set out to derive consistency conditions on the matter content in de-Sitter. Surprisingly, our proposed bound is violated by any reasonable form of matter. In our discussion, we find a novel one-parameter family of entangling surfaces. The last chapter is dedicated to solvable irrelevant deformations in quantum field theory -- the $T\bar T$ deformation. Within holography, we derive the entanglement entropies for generic subintervals on a sphere. We also resolve the confusion in the literature about a seeming mismatch between the holographic field theory results for the entanglement entropy in general dimensions.
We study the properties of gravitational system in finite regions bounded by gravitational screens. We present the detail construction of the total energy of such regions and of the energy and momentum balance equations due to the flow of matter and gravitational radiation through the screen. We establish that the gravitational screen possesses analogs of surface tension, internal energy and viscous stress tensor, while the conservations are analogs of non-equilibrium balance equations for a viscous system. This gives a precise correspondence between gravity in finite regions and non-equilibri…
We define an effective temperature and study its properties for a class of out-of-equilibrium steady states in a heat bath. Our analysis is based on the anti-de Sitter spacetime/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, and examples include systems driven by applied electric fields and branes dragged in plasmas. We found that the effective temperature can be lower than that of the heat bath and that the out-of-equilibrium noise can be smaller than that in equilibrium. We show that a generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation relation holds for the effective temperature. In particular…
We derive a non-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation for bosonic correlation functions from holography in the classical gravity approximation at strong coupling. This generalizes the familiar thermal fluctuation-dissipation relation in absence of external sources. This also holds universally for any non-equilibrium state which can be obtained from a stable thermal equilibrium state in perturbative derivative (hydrodynamic) and amplitude (non-hydrodynamic) expansions. Therefore, this can provide a strong experimental test for the applicability of the holographic framework. We discuss ho…
We study the non-equilibrium steady-state phase transition from probe brane holography in $z=2$ Schrödinger spacetime. Concerning differential conductivity, a phase transition could occur in the conductor state. Considering constant current operator as the external field and the conductivity as an order parameter, we derive scaling behavior of order parameter near the critical point. We explore the critical exponents of the non-equilibrium phase transition in two different Schrödinger spacetimes, which originated $1)$ from supergravity, and $2)$ from AdS blackhole in the light-cone coordinates…
We study the critical exponents in the universal scaling laws of a holographic non-equilibrium steady state nearby its critical point of phase transition, which is driven by an AC electric field sitting in the boundary of the bulk. The applied electric filed drives the initial superconducting state into a non-equilibrium steady state with vanishing condensate as its amplitude is greater than a critical value. In the vicinity of the non-equilibrium critical point, we numerically calculate the six static and one dynamical critical exponents, and find that they have similar values to those in equ…
Small perturbations of a black brane are interpreted as small deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium in a dual theory with the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper, we calculate hydrodynamics of the dual Yang-Mills theory in the gravity side using membrane paradigm. This method is different from the usual AdS/CFT correspondence and evaluate classical solutions not at boundaries but at the place slightly away from a horizon. There are sound modes or shear modes for gravity perturbation. For sound modes, such calculation at the horizon has not yet been done. Then, we find that boundary stres…
In heavy-ion collisions, the quark-gluon plasma is produced far from equilibrium. This regime is currently inaccessible by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) computations. We calculate shear transport and entropy far from equilibrium in a holographic model, defining a time-dependent ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$. Large deviations of up to 60% from its near-equilibrium value, $1/4π$, are found for realistic situations at the Large Hadron Collider. We predict the far-from-equilibrium time-dependence of $η/s$ to substantially affect the evolution of the QCD plasma and to impact the…
We study the equilibration of a class of far-from-equilibrium strongly interacting systems using gauge/gravity duality. The systems we analyse are 2+1 dimensional and have a four dimensional gravitational dual. A prototype example of a system we analyse is the equilibration of a two dimensional fluid which is translational invariant in one direction and is attached to two different heat baths with different temperatures at infinity in the other direction. We realise such setup in gauge/gravity duality by joining two semi-infinite asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black branes of different te…
We compute anomalous transport phenomena sourced by vector and axial magnetic fields in out of equilibrium setups produced by Vaidya background metrics in holography. We use generalized Vaidya metrics that include momentum relaxation induced by massless scalar fields. While the background metric and gauge field show formally instantaneous thermalization the chiral magnetic effect has significantly large equilibration times. We study how the equilibration of the chiral magnetic effect depends on the length of the Vaidya quench and the momentum relaxation parameter. These results shed some light…
In holographic applications one can encounter scenarios where a long-wavelength instability can arise. In such situations, it is often the case that the dynamical end point of the instability is a new equilibrium phase with a nonlinear scalar hair condensate outside the black hole horizon. We here review holographic setups where symmetric horizons suffer from long-wavelength instabilities where a suitable equilibrium condensate phase does not exist. We study the dynamics of the simplest model in this exotic class, and show that it uncovers arbitrarily large curvatures in the vicinity of the ho…
We study properties of effective temperature of non-equilibrium steady states by using the anti-de Sitter spacetime/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. We consider non-equilibrium systems with a constant flow of current along an electric field, in which the current is carried by both the doped charges and those pair created by the electric field. We find that the effective temperature agrees with that of the Langevin systems if we take the limit where the pair creation is negligible. The effect of pair creation raises the effective temperature whereas the current by the doped char…
One of the most exciting things in recent theoretical physics is the suspicion that gravity may be holographic, dual to some sort of quantum field theory living on the boundary with one less dimension. Such a suspicion has been supported mainly by a variety of specific examples from string theory. This paper is intended to purport the holographic gravity from a different perspective. Namely we propose that such a holography can actually be observed within the context of Einstein's gravity, where neither is spacetime required to be asymptotically AdS nor the boundary to be located at conformal …
We study the chiral vortical effect far from equilibrium in a strongly coupled holographic field theory. Rotation is represented as a perturbation via a gravito-magnetic field on top of a five-dimensional charged AdS Vaidya metric. We also introduce a momentum relaxation mechanism by linear scalar field backgrounds and study the CVE dynamics as function of the charges, temperature and momentum relaxation. The far from equilibrium behavior shows that the CVE builds up with a significant delay in time compared to the quasi instantaneous equilibration of the background metric. We also pay special…
We study the real time evolution of the chiral magnetic effect out-of-equilibrium in strongly coupled anomalous field theories. We match the parameters of our model to QCD parameters and draw lessons of possible relevance for the realization of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions. In particular, we find an equilibration time of about $\sim0.35$ fm/c in presence of the chiral anomaly for plasma temperatures of order $T\sim300-400$ MeV.
This is the contribution to Quarks'2018 conference proceedings. This contribution is devoted to the holographic description of chaos and quantum complexity in the strongly interacting systems out of equilibrium. In the first part of the talk we present different holographic complexity proposals in out-of-equilibrium CFT following the local perturbation. The second part is devoted to the chaotic growth of the local operator size at a finite chemical potential. There are numerous results stating that the chemical potential may lead to the chaos disappearance, and we confirm these results from ho…
Motivated by a low-energy effective description of gauge theory/string theory duality, we conjecture that the dynamics of $SO(4)$-invariant states in a large class of four-dimensional conformal gauge theories on $S^3$ with non-equal central charges $c\ne a$ are universal on time scales $t_{\rm universal}\propto ({\cal E}-{\cal E}_{\rm vacuum})^{-1}$, in the limit where the energy ${\cal E}\to {\cal E}_{\rm vacuum}$. We show that low-energy excitations in $c\ne a$ CFTs do not thermalize in this limit. The holographic universality conjecture then implies that within the Einstein-scalar field sys…
Shear viscosity is a crucial property of QCD matter which determines the collective behavior of the the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Extending the near-equilibrium, high-precision investigations in theory and experiment, we take into account the fact that, in a collision, the QGP is generated far from equilibrium. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study a strongly coupled plasma and find a significant impact on the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$. In particular, we investigate the initial heating phase and find a decrease reaching do…
For a closed system to equilibrate from a given initial condition there must exist an equilibrium state with the energy equal to the initial one. Equilibrium states of a strongly coupled gauge theory with a gravitational holographic dual are represented by black holes. We study the spectrum of black holes in Pilch-Warner geometry. These black holes are holographically dual to equilibrium states of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ ${\cal N}=2^*$ gauge theory plasma on $S^3$ in the planar limit. We find that there is no energy gap in the black hole spectrum. Thus, there is a priory no obstruction for eq…
In this thesis I present numerical studies of entanglement entropy and the quantum null energy condition in strongly coupled far-from-equilibrium quantum states using holography. I give a careful introduction into the numerical methods used and provide the computer codes to compute entanglement entropy and the quantum null energy condition. These methods are then applied to systems of various degrees of complexity, including homogeneous and isotropic far- from-equilibrium quantum quenches dual to Vaidya spacetimes, to homogeneous and anisotropic finite temperature states dual to anisotropic bl…
We study universal spatial features of certain non-equilibrium steady states corresponding to flows of strongly correlated fluids over obstacles. This allows us to predict universal spatial features of far-from-equilibrium systems, which in certain interesting cases depend cleanly on the hydrodynamic transport coefficients of the underlying theory, such as $η/s$, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio. In this work we give a purely field-theoretical definition of the spatial collective modes identified earlier and proceed to demonstrate their usefulness in a set of examples, drawing on h…
We study the dynamics of D-branes in a smooth time-dependent background. The theory on the branes is a time-dependent non-commutative field theory. We find the metric and fluxes that determine the dual holographic closed string theory. This provides a concrete example of holography in a cosmological setting.
In the presence of a gravitational contribution to the chiral anomaly, the chiral magnetic effect induces an energy current proportional to the square of the temperature in equilibrium. In holography the thermal state corresponds to a black hole. We numerically study holographic quenches in which a planar shell of scalar matter falls into a black hole and rises its temperature. During the process the momentum density (energy current) is conserved. The energy current has two components, a non-dissipative one induced by the anomaly and a dissipative flow component. The dissipative component can …
Using the gauge-gravity duality, we argue that for a certain class of out-of-equilibrium steady-state systems in contact with a thermal background at a given temperature, the macroscopic physics can be captured by an effective thermodynamic description. The steady-state is obtained by applying a constant electric field that results in a stationary current flow. Within holography, we consider generic probe systems where an open string equivalence principle and an open string metric govern the effective thermodynamics. This description comes equipped with an effective temperature, which is large…
Microseconds after the Big Bang quarks and gluons formed a strongly-coupled non-conformal liquid driven out-of-equilibrium by the expansion of the Universe. We use holography to determine the non-equilibrium behavior of this liquid in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Universe and develop an expansion for the corresponding entropy production in terms of the derivatives of the cosmological scale factor. We show that the resulting series has zero radius of convergence and we discuss its resurgent properties. Finally, we compute the resummed entropy production rate in de Sitter Universe at la…
Recently, a minimal membrane description of the entanglement dynamics of large regions in generic chaotic systems was conjectured in arXiv:1803.00089. Analytic results in random circuits and spin chain numerics support this theory. We show that the results found by the author in arXiv:1612.00082 about the dynamics of entanglement entropy in theories with a holographic dual can be reformulated in terms of the same minimal membrane, providing strong evidence that the membrane theory describes all chaotic systems. We discuss the implications of our results for tensor network approaches to hologra…
We study the electric and heat current response resulting from an electric field quench in a holographic model of momentum relaxation at nonzero charge density. After turning the electric field off, currents return to equilibrium as governed by the vector quasi-normal modes of the dual black brane, whose spectrum depends qualitatively on a parameter controlling the strength of inhomogeneity. We explore the dynamical phase diagram as a function of this parameter, showing that signatures of incoherent transport become identifiable as an oscillatory ringdown of the heat current. We also study non…
Aging phenomena are examples of `non-equilibrium criticality' and can be exemplified by systems with Galilean and scaling symmetries but no time translation invariance. We realize aging holographically using a deformation of a non-relativistic version of gauge/gravity duality. Correlation functions of scalar operators are computed using holographic real-time techniques, and agree with field theory expectations. At least in this setup, general aging phenomena are reproduced holographically by complexifying the bulk space-time geometry, even in Lorentzian signature.
A relativistic fluid in 3+1 dimensions with a global $U(1)$ symmetry admits nine independent static susceptibilities at the second order in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion, which capture the response of the fluid in thermal equilibrium to the presence of external time-independent sources. Of these, seven are time-reversal $\mathbb{T}$ invariant and can be obtained from Kubo formulas involving equilibrium two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and the $U(1)$ current. Making use of the gauge/gravity duality along with the aforementioned Kubo formulas, we compute all seven $\math…
We report on the approach towards the hydrodynamic regime of boost-invariant N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma at strong coupling starting from various far-from-equilibrium states at tau=0. The results are obtained through numerical solution of Einstein's equations for the dual geometries, as described in detail in the companion article arXiv:1203.0755. Despite the very rich far-from-equilibrium evolution, we find surprising regularities in the form of clear correlations between initial entropy and total produced entropy, as well as between initial entropy and the temperature at thermalization, unde…
Space-based next-generation interferometers propose to measure the Lyapunov exponents of the nearly bound geodesics that comprise the photon ring surrounding the black hole M87*. We argue that these classical Lyapunov exponents equal the quantum Ruelle resonances describing the late-time approach to thermal equilibrium of the quantum microstate holographically dual to any Kerr black hole such as M87*. Moreover, we identify "near-ring regions" in the phase space of fields propagating on Kerr that exhibit critical behavior, including emergent conformal symmetries. These are analogues for sub-ext…
We calculate the transport of a theory with two conserved currents by holographic method and compare it with graphene data to determine its dynamical exponents $(z,θ)$ which characterizes a QCP. As a result, we find that the electric and the thermal conductivity data can be fit much more naturally if we assume $(z,θ)=(3/2,1)$ rather than $(1,0)$. Furthermore, we find that thermoelectric power data at high temperature can be fit if we use $(3/2,1)$ but not at all by $(1,0)$. The $θ=1$ result can be interpreted as taking into account the fermionic nature of the electrons and $z=3/2$ can be inter…
We show that holography arises naturally in the context of spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The result is not dependent on detailed assumptions about the dynamics of the theory being considered. It ties strongly the amount of information contained in a region of space to the tight mathematical underpinnings of loop quantum geometry, at least in this particular context.
Motivated by recent progress in developing action formulations of relativistic hydrodynamics, we use holography to derive the low energy dissipationless effective action for strongly coupled conformal fluids. Our analysis is based on the study of novel double Dirichlet problems for the gravitational field, in which the boundary conditions are set on two codimension one timelike hypersurfaces (branes). We provide a geometric interpretation of the Goldstone bosons appearing in such constructions in terms of a family of spatial geodesics extending between the ultraviolet and the infrared brane. F…
Understanding the real time dynamics of quantum systems without quasiparticles constitutes an important yet challenging problem. We study the superfluid-insulator quantum-critical point of bosons on a two-dimensional lattice, a system whose excitations cannot be described in a quasiparticle basis. We present detailed quantum Monte Carlo results for two separate lattice realizations: their low-frequency conductivities are found to have the same universal dependence on imaginary frequency and temperature. We then use the structure of the real time dynamics of conformal field theories described b…

The dynamical scaling of quantum critical systems in thermal equilibrium may be inherited in the driven steady-state, leading to universal out-of-equilibrium behaviour. This attractive notion has been demonstrated in just a few cases. We demonstrate how holography - a mapping between the quantum critical system and a gravity dual - provides an illuminating perspective and new results. Non-trivial out-of-equilibrium universality is particularly apparent in current noise, which is dual to Hawking radiation in the gravitational system. We calculate this in a 2-dimensional system driven by a stron…
We examine the formation and critical dynamics of topological defects via Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point, which is conjectured to dual to a Lifshitz geometry. Quantized magnetic fluxoids are spontaneously generated and trapped in the cores of order parameter vortices, which is a feature of type II superconductors. Time evolution of the average condensate is found to lag behind the instantaneous equilibrium value of the order parameter, a typical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics. Scalings of vortex number density and the "freeze-out" time match the pre…
We study the holographic non-relativistic fermions in the presence of bulk dipole coupling in charged dilatonic black hole background. We explore the nontrivial effects of the bulk dipole coupling, the fermion charge as well as the dilaton field on the flat band, the Fermi surface and the emergence of the gap by investigating the spectral function of the non-relativistic fermion system. In particular, we find that the presence of the flat band in the non-relativistic case will suppress the Fermi momentum. Besides, we observe that the effect of the dipole coupling in the dilaton gravity is more…
Plasma balls are droplets of deconfined plasma surrounded by a confining vacuum. We present the first holographic simulation of their real-time evolution via the dynamics of localized, finite-energy black holes in the five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) soliton background. The dual gauge theory is four-dimensional, N=4 super Yang-Mills compactified on a circle with supersymmetry-breaking boundary conditions. We consider horizonless initial data sourced by a massless scalar field. Prompt scalar field collapse then produces an excited black hole at the bottom of the geometry together with grav…
For any spherically symmetric black hole spacetime with an ideal fluid source, we establish a dual fluid system on a hypersurface near the black hole horizon. The dual fluid is incompressible and obeys Navier-Stokes equation subject to some external force. The force term in the fluid equation consists in two parts, one comes from the curvature of the hypersurface, the other comes from the stress-energy of the bulk fluid.
We argue that Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity provides the minimal holographic dual for Lifshitz-type field theories with anisotropic scaling and dynamical exponent z. First we show that Lifshitz spacetimes are vacuum solutions of HL gravity, without need for additional matter. Then we perform holographic renormalization of HL gravity, and show how it reproduces the full structure of the z=2 anisotropic Weyl anomaly in dual field theories in 2+1 dimensions, while its minimal relativistic gravity counterpart yields only one of two independent central charges in the anomaly.
We study generic types of holographic matter residing in Lifshitz invariant defect field theory as modeled by adding probe D-branes in the bulk black hole spacetime characterized by dynamical exponent $z$ and with hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. Our main focus will be on the collective excitations of the dense matter in the presence of an external magnetic field. Constraining the defect field theory to 2+1 dimensions, we will also allow the gauge fields become dynamical and study the properties of a strongly coupled anyonic fluid. We will deduce the universal properties of holographic mat…
We propose the holographic principle as a dynamical cutoff for any quantum theory of gravity with a geometric description at low energies, incorporating ideas of effective field theory. We illustrate the proposal by revisiting the problem of defining a measure for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes coupled to a scalar field and conclude by discussing the implications to the inflationary model.
We discuss the computation of the quantum effective action of strongly interacting field theories using holographic duality, and its use to determine quasi-equilibrium parameters of first order phase transitions relevant for gravitational wave production. A particularly simple holographic model is introduced, containing only the metric and a free massive scalar field. Despite the simplicity, the model contains a rich phase diagram, including first order phase transitions at non-zero temperature, due to various multi-trace deformations. We obtain the leading terms in the effective action from h…
In this paper we consider the energy and momentum transport in (1+1)-dimension conformal field theories (CFTs) that are deformed by an irrelevant operator $T\bar{T}$, using the integrability based generalized hydrodynamics, and holography. The two complementary methods allow us to study the energy and momentum transport after the in-homogeneous quench, derive the exact non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) and calculate the Drude weights and the diffusion constants. Our analysis reveals that all of these quantities satisfy universal formulae regardless of the underlying CFT, thereby generalizin…
We study correlation functions of elementary fermions in strongly interacting field theories using the AdS/CFT correspondence. This correspondence generically associates bulk fields to composite operators in field theory. We modify the holographic prescription in order to obtain correlators that correspond to fermonic single-particle excitations by introducing a dynamical fermionic source localized on a UV brane in a holographic background. We work out the conditions when these correlators obey the zeroth frequency sum-rule satisfied by angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) and ar…
We construct families of supersymmetric solutions of type IIB and D=11 supergravity that are invariant under the non-relativistic conformal algebra for various values of dynamical exponent z greater than or equal to 4 and 3, respectively. The solutions are based on five- and seven-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifolds and generalise the known solutions with dynamical exponent z=4 for the type IIB case and z=3 for the D=11 case, respectively.
Typically, an interactive system evolves towards thermal equilibrium, with hydrodynamics representing a universal framework for its late-time dynamics. Classification of the dynamical fixed points (DFPs) of a driven Quantum Field Theory (with time dependent coupling constants, masses, external background fields, etc.) is unknown. We use holographic framework to analyze such fixed points in one example of strongly coupled gauge theory, driven by homogeneous and isotropic expansion of the background metric - equivalently, a late-time dynamics of the corresponding QFT in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robert…
