COVID-19 clinical trial design is a critical task in developing therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. In this study, we apply a deep learning approach to extract eligibility criteria variables from COVID-19 trials to enable quantitative analysis of trial design and optimization. Specifically, we train attention-based bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Att-BiLSTM) models and use the optimal model to extract entities (i.e., variables) from the eligibility criteria of COVID-19 trials. We compare the performance of Att-BiLSTM with traditional ontology-based method. The result on a benchmark dataset shows that Att-BiLSTM outperforms the ontology model. Att-BiLSTM achieves a precision of 0.942, recall of 0.810, and F1 of 0.871, while the ontology model only achieves a precision of 0.715, recall of 0.659, and F1 of 0.686. Our analyses demonstrate that Att-BiLSTM is an effective approach for characterizing patient populations in COVID-19 clinical trials.

We present a neural transition-based parser for spinal trees, a dependency representation of constituent trees. The parser uses Stack-LSTMs that compose constituent nodes with dependency-based derivations. In experiments, we show that this model adapts to different styles of dependency relations, but this choice has little effect for predicting constituent structure, suggesting that LSTMs induce useful states by themselves.

We present extensions to a continuous-state dependency parsing method that makes it applicable to morphologically rich languages. Starting with a high-performance transition-based parser that uses long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks to learn representations of the parser state, we replace lookup-based word representations with representations constructed from the orthographic representations of the words, also using LSTMs. This allows statistical sharing across word forms that are similar on the surface. Experiments for morphologically rich languages show that the parsing m…

We present a transition-based AMR parser that directly generates AMR parses from plain text. We use Stack-LSTMs to represent our parser state and make decisions greedily. In our experiments, we show that our parser achieves very competitive scores on English using only AMR training data. Adding additional information, such as POS tags and dependency trees, improves the results further.

We propose a transition-based dependency parser using Recurrent Neural Networks with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units. This extends the feedforward neural network parser of Chen and Manning (2014) and enables modelling of entire sequences of shift/reduce transition decisions. On the Google Web Treebank, our LSTM parser is competitive with the best feedforward parser on overall accuracy and notably achieves more than 3% improvement for long-range dependencies, which has proved difficult for previous transition-based parsers due to error propagation and limited context information. Our findin…

In Vietnamese dependency parsing, several methods have been proposed. Dependency parser which uses deep neural network model has been reported that achieved state-of-the-art results. In this paper, we proposed a new method which applies LSTM easy-first dependency parsing with pre-trained word embeddings and character-level word embeddings. Our method achieves an accuracy of 80.91% of unlabeled attachment score and 72.98% of labeled attachment score on the Vietnamese Dependency Treebank (VnDT).
We present a simple and effective scheme for dependency parsing which is based on bidirectional-LSTMs (BiLSTMs). Each sentence token is associated with a BiLSTM vector representing the token in its sentential context, and feature vectors are constructed by concatenating a few BiLSTM vectors. The BiLSTM is trained jointly with the parser objective, resulting in very effective feature extractors for parsing. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by applying it to a greedy transition-based parser as well as to a globally optimized graph-based parser. The resulting parsers have very sim…
We present a simple LSTM-based transition-based dependency parser. Our model is composed of a single LSTM hidden layer replacing the hidden layer in the usual feed-forward network architecture. We also propose a new initialization method that uses the pre-trained weights from a feed-forward neural network to initialize our LSTM-based model. We also show that using dropout on the input layer has a positive effect on performance. Our final parser achieves a 93.06% unlabeled and 91.01% labeled attachment score on the Penn Treebank. We additionally replace LSTMs with GRUs and Elman units in our mo…

Semantic parsing can be defined as the process of mapping natural language sentences into a machine interpretable, formal representation of its meaning. Semantic parsing using LSTM encoder-decoder neural networks have become promising approach. However, human automated translation of natural language does not provide grammaticality guarantees for the sentences generate such a guarantee is particularly important for practical cases where a data base query can cause critical errors if the sentence is ungrammatical. In this work, we propose an neural architecture called Encoder CFG-Decoder, whose…
Recently, neural network approaches for parsing have largely automated the combination of individual features, but still rely on (often a larger number of) atomic features created from human linguistic intuition, and potentially omitting important global context. To further reduce feature engineering to the bare minimum, we use bi-directional LSTM sentence representations to model a parser state with only three sentence positions, which automatically identifies important aspects of the entire sentence. This model achieves state-of-the-art results among greedy dependency parsers for English. We…
We suggest a compositional vector representation of parse trees that relies on a recursive combination of recurrent-neural network encoders. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we use the representation as the backbone of a greedy, bottom-up dependency parser, achieving state-of-the-art accuracies for English and Chinese, without relying on external word embeddings. The parser's implementation is available for download at the first author's webpage.

The need for tree structure modelling on top of sequence modelling is an open issue in neural dependency parsing. We investigate the impact of adding a tree layer on top of a sequential model by recursively composing subtree representations (composition) in a transition-based parser that uses features extracted by a BiLSTM. Composition seems superfluous with such a model, suggesting that BiLSTMs capture information about subtrees. We perform model ablations to tease out the conditions under which composition helps. When ablating the backward LSTM, performance drops and composition does not rec…

We present a transition-based parser that jointly produces syntactic and semantic dependencies. It learns a representation of the entire algorithm state, using stack long short-term memories. Our greedy inference algorithm has linear time, including feature extraction. On the CoNLL 2008--9 English shared tasks, we obtain the best published parsing performance among models that jointly learn syntax and semantics.
As for semantic role labeling (SRL) task, when it comes to utilizing parsing information, both traditional methods and recent recurrent neural network (RNN) based methods use the feature engineering way. In this paper, we propose Syntax Aware Long Short Time Memory(SA-LSTM). The structure of SA-LSTM modifies according to dependency parsing information in order to model parsing information directly in an architecture engineering way instead of feature engineering way. We experimentally demonstrate that SA-LSTM gains more improvement from the model architecture. Furthermore, SA-LSTM outperforms …

While India has been one of the hotspots of COVID-19, data about the pandemic from the country has proved to be largely inaccessible at scale. Much of the data exists in unstructured form on the web, and limited aspects of such data are available through public APIs maintained manually through volunteer effort. This has proved to be difficult both in terms of ease of access to detailed data and with regards to the maintenance of manual data-keeping over time. This paper reports on our effort at automating the extraction of such data from public health bulletins with the help of a combination o…

Modeling the parser state is key to good performance in transition-based parsing. Recurrent Neural Networks considerably improved the performance of transition-based systems by modelling the global state, e.g. stack-LSTM parsers, or local state modeling of contextualized features, e.g. Bi-LSTM parsers. Given the success of Transformer architectures in recent parsing systems, this work explores modifications of the sequence-to-sequence Transformer architecture to model either global or local parser states in transition-based parsing. We show that modifications of the cross attention mechanism o…
We propose a technique for learning representations of parser states in transition-based dependency parsers. Our primary innovation is a new control structure for sequence-to-sequence neural networks---the stack LSTM. Like the conventional stack data structures used in transition-based parsing, elements can be pushed to or popped from the top of the stack in constant time, but, in addition, an LSTM maintains a continuous space embedding of the stack contents. This lets us formulate an efficient parsing model that captures three facets of a parser's state: (i) unbounded look-ahead into the buff…

Internet forums and public social media, such as online healthcare forums, provide a convenient channel for users (people/patients) concerned about health issues to discuss and share information with each other. In late December 2019, an outbreak of a novel coronavirus (infection from which results in the disease named COVID-19) was reported, and, due to the rapid spread of the virus in other parts of the world, the World Health Organization declared a state of emergency. In this paper, we used automated extraction of COVID-19 related discussions from social media and a natural language proces…

There is a growing interest in investigating what neural NLP models learn about language. A prominent open question is the question of whether or not it is necessary to model hierarchical structure. We present a linguistic investigation of a neural parser adding insights to this question. We look at transitivity and agreement information of auxiliary verb constructions (AVCs) in comparison to finite main verbs (FMVs). This comparison is motivated by theoretical work in dependency grammar and in particular the work of Tesnière (1959) where AVCs and FMVs are both instances of a nucleus, the basi…

During this lockdown period, social media plat-forms have played an important role to spread information about this pandemic across the world, as people used to express their feelings through the social networks. Considering this catastrophic situation, we developed an experimental approach to analyze the reactions of people on Twitter taking into ac-count the popular words either directly or indirectly based on this pa…

The parsing model is trained end-to-end using only the text tokens as input. The transition system has been designed to output frame graphs directly without any intervening symbolic representation. The SLING framework includes an efficient and scalable frame store implementation as well as a neural network JIT compiler for fast inference during pa…

Our work involves enriching the Stack-LSTM transition-based AMR parser (Ballesteros and Al-Onaizan, 2017) by augmenting training with Policy Learning and rewarding the Smatch score of sampled graphs. In addition, we also combined several AMR-to-text alignments with an attention mechanism and we supplemented the parser with pre-processed concept identification, named entities and contextualized embeddings. We achieve a highly competitive performance that is comparable to the best published results. We show an in-depth study ablating each of the new components of the parser
In this paper, we describe the system submitted for the SemEval 2018 Task 3 (Irony detection in English tweets) Subtask A by the team Binarizer. Irony detection is a key task for many natural language processing works. Our method treats ironical tweets to consist of smaller parts containing different emotions. We break down tweets into separate phrases using a dependency parser. We then embed those phrases using an LSTM-based neural network model which is pre-trained to predict emoticons for tweets. Finally, we train a fully-connected network to achieve classification.
Semantic parsing is the process of mapping a natural language sentence into a formal representation of its meaning. In this work we use the neural network approach to transform natural language sentence into a query to an ontology database in the SPARQL language. This method does not rely on handcraft-rules, high-quality lexicons, manually-built templates or other handmade complex structures. Our approach is based on vector space model and neural networks. The proposed model is based in two learning steps. The first step generates a vector representation for the sentence in natural language an…

Natural language is hierarchically structured: smaller units (e.g., phrases) are nested within larger units (e.g., clauses). When a larger constituent ends, all of the smaller constituents that are nested within it must also be closed. While the standard LSTM architecture allows different neurons to track information at different time scales, it does not have an explicit bias towards modeling a hierarchy of constituents. This paper proposes to add such an inductive bias by ordering the neurons; a vector of master input and forget gates ensures that when a given neuron is updated, all the neuro…

Unlike the previous top models that use very complicated network architectures, we first demonstrate that carefully designing sequential in…
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, a type of recurrent neural network with a more complex computational unit, have been successfully applied to a variety of sequence modeling tasks. In this paper we develop Tree Long Short-Term Memory (TreeLSTM), a neural network model based on LSTM, which is designed to predict a tree rather than a linear sequence. TreeLSTM defines the probability of a sentence by estimating the generation probability of its dependency tree. At each time step, a node is generated based on the representation of the generated sub-tree. We further enhance the modeling power…

Most existing recursive neural network (RvNN) architectures utilize only the structure of parse trees, ignoring syntactic tags which are provided as by-products of parsing. We present a novel RvNN architecture that can provide dynamic compositionality by considering comprehensive syntactic information derived from both the structure and linguistic tags. Specifically, we introduce a structure-aware tag representation constructed by a separate tag-level tree-LSTM. With this, we can control the composition function of the existing word-level tree-LSTM by augmenting the representation as a supplem…
In this work, we first analyze the memory behavior in three recurrent neural networks (RNN) cells; namely, the simple RNN (SRN), the long short-term memory (LSTM) and the gated recurrent unit (GRU), where the memory is defined as a function that maps previous elements in a sequence to the current output. Our study shows that all three of them suffer rapid memory decay. Then, to alleviate this effect, we introduce trainable scaling factors that act like an attention mechanism to adjust memory decay adaptively. The new design is called the extended LSTM (ELSTM). Finally, to design a system that …

In this paper, we propose attentive graph convolutional networks to enhance neural CCG supertagging through a novel solution of leveraging contextual information. Specifically, we build the graph from chunks (n-grams) extracted from a lexicon and apply attention ov…

Deep learning approaches are superior in NLP due to their ability to extract informative features and patterns from languages. The two most successful neural architectures are LSTM and transformers, used in large pretrained language models such as BERT. While cross-lingual approaches are on the rise, most current NLP techniques are designed and applied to English, and less-resourced languages are lagging behind. In morphologically rich languages, information is conveyed through morphology, e.g., through affixes modifying stems of words. Existing neural approaches do not explicitly use the info…
