We investigate intermodal forward Brillouin scattering in a solid-core PCF, demonstrating efficient power conversion between the HE11 and HE21 modes, with a maximum gain coefficient of 21.4/W/km. By exploring mechanical modes of different symmetries, we observe both polarization-dependent and polarization-independent intermodal Brillouin interaction. Finally, we discuss the role of squeeze film air damping and leakage mechanisms, ultimately critical to the engineering of PCF structures with enhanced interaction between high order optical modes through flexural mechanical modes.
We present detailed experimental study on noise-seeded intermodal modulation instability (IM-MI) in normal dispersion region of a conventional step-index fiber. The sharp refractive index contrast between core and cladding leads to large group velocity mismatch between the spatial modes, coaxing to efficient IM-MI and generation of multiple spectral peaks along with Raman peaks. Evolution of the spectrum with pump powers and fiber lengths are observed. Experimental findings are well supported with the theoretical framework based on bimodal-MI model considering the distinct dispersion parameter…
We report the suppression of intermodal modulation instability peaks as a consequence of Kerr induced self beam-cleaning in a 90m long graded-index multimode optical fiber under various specific launching conditions. The output spectrum and the modal beam profiles for three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP21) have been recorded for several values of pump pulse energy. Experimental findings establish that the nonlinear coupling among the guided modes leads to reshaping the output speckle pattern into a bell shape or higher-order spatially clean beam profile as the pump peak power increases, whereas in…
We theoretically and numerically investigate intermodal four-wave-mixing in km-long fibers, where random birefringence fluctuations are present along the fiber length. We identify several distinct regimes that depend on the relative magnitude between the length scale of the random fluctuations and the beat-lengths of the interacting quasi-degenerate modes. In addition, we analyze the impact of polarization mode-dispersion and we demonstrate that random variations of the core radius, which are typically encountered during the drawing stage of the fiber, can represent the major source of bandwid…
We present a detailed study of photon-pair generation in a multimode optical fiber via nonlinear four-wave mixing and intermodal phase-matching. We show that in multimode optical fibers, it is possible to generate correlated photon pairs in different fiber modes with large spectral shifts from the pump wavelength, such that the photon pairs are immune to contamination from spontaneous Raman scattering and residual pump photons. We also show that it is possible to generate factorable two-photon states exhibiting minimal spectral correlations between the photon pair components in conventional mu…
We experimentally and theoretically investigate the process of seeded intermodal four-wave mixing in a graded index multimode fiber, pumped in the normal dispersion regime. By using a fiber with a 100 micron core diameter, we generate a parametric sideband in the C band (1530-1565 nm), hence allowing the use of an Erbium-based laser to seed the mixing process. To limit nonlinear coupling between the pump and the seed to low-order fiber modes, the waist diameter of the pump beam is properly adjusted. We observe that the superimposed seed stimulates the generation of new spectral sidebands. A de…
We report on the experimental observation of a simultaneous threefold wavelength and spatial conversion process at telecommunication wavelengths taking place in a 6-LP-mode graded-index few-mode fiber. The physical mechanism is based on parallel and phase-matched frequency-degenerated intermodal four-wave mixing (FD-IFWM) phenomena occurring between the fundamental mode and higher-order spatial modes. More precisely, a single high-power frequency-degenerated pump wave is simultaneously injected in the four spatial modes LP01, LP11, LP02 and LP31 of a 1.8-km long graded-index few-mode fiber tog…
Interest in the nonlinear properties of multi-mode optical waveguides has seen a recent resurgence on account of the large dimensionality afforded by the platform. However, a perceived fundamental limitation of intermodal parametric interactions - that they are impractically narrowband - has yet to be solved. Here we show that by engineering the relative group velocity within the discrete spatial degree of freedom, we can tailor the phase matching bandwidth of intermodal parametric nonlinearities. We demonstrate group-velocity-tailored four-wave mixing between the $LP_{0,4}$ and $LP_{0,5}$ mod…
This study investigated the nonlinear frequency conversions between the six polarization modes of a two-mode birefringent fiber. The aim was to demonstrate that the selective excitation of different combinations of linearly polarized spatial modes at the pump wavelength initiates distinct intermodal vector four-wave mixing processes. In particular, this study shows that exciting two orthogonally polarized LP01 and LP11 modes can result in simultaneous generation of up to three pairs of different spatial modes of orthogonal polarizations at different wavelengths. The role of the phase birefring…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the energy transfer between modes during the tapering process of an optical nanofiber through spectrogram analysis. The results allow optimization of the tapering process, and we measure transmission in excess of 99.95% for the fundamental mode. We quantify the adiabaticity condition through calculations and place an upper bound on the amount of energy transferred to other modes at each step of the tapering, giving practical limits to the tapering angle.
We present a theoretical and experimental study of the generation of photon pairs through the process of spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in a few-mode, birefringent fiber. Under these conditions, multiple SFWM processes are in fact possible, each associated with a different combination of transverse modes for the four waves involved. We show that in the weakly guiding regime, for which the propagation modes may be well approximated by linearly polarized modes, the departure from circular symmetry due to the fiber birefringence translates into conservation rules which retain elements from a…
We propose a method for generating cascaded forward Brillouin scattering (CFBS), based on a counter-propagated pump-probe technique, utilizing backward stimulated Brillouin scattering as its seed. The CFBS, induced by forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (FSBS), is generated via the energy transfer from the probe light to other acoustic resonance frequencies. Experimental results for the CFBS generated in a 390-m-long highly nonlinear fiber indicate that it has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and that the center frequencies of its acoustic resonance peaks agree with theoretical values. T…
We predict and experimentally observe a nonlinear variant of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a single-mode fiber that arises from consideration of higher-order processes for phonon generation. The effect manifests itself at high laser excitation as the appearance of Stokes gain for a detuning equal to half of the conventional Brillouin frequency in the fiber, with no accompanying anti-Stokes absorption at the opposite detuning, and requires counter-propagating pump beams for phase-matching. We believe that this could be a new nonlinear optical effect that has not been observed before.
We present an experimental and theoretical study of cascaded high order Stimulated Brillouin Scatterings (SBS) in single mode fibers. It is shown that because of the back-scattering nature of the process, feedback in the input port is needed for obtaining a significant cascaded effect in nonresonant systems. We also discuss similarities to nonlinear photorefractive processes.
We observe an interference pattern using a simple fiber-optic interferometer consisting of an electrical spectrum analyzer and a narrowband light source, which is commonly employed for observing the Brillouin gain spectrum. This interference pattern expands well beyond the frequency range corresponding to the Brillouin frequency shift in silica fibers (approximately 11 GHz at 1550 nm). Using both silica single-mode and polymer optical sensing fibers, we then experimentally prove that the distinctive noise in a self-heterodyne-based Brillouin measurement with an unoptimized polarization state o…
An extensive study of the alignment between the pump, the signal and the polarization dependent gain (PDG) vectors in stimulated Brillouin amplification in randomly birefringent fibers is realized by numerically integrating the equations governing the propagation. At the fiber output, the signal tends to align to the PDG vector for large pump power because of the nonlinear polarization pulling effect. The PDG vector, for large random birefringence, aligns to a state that has the same linear component of the pump but opposite circular component.
Phase and/or intensity modulation techniques to broaden the Linewidth of an optical source are well known methods to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. A common technique used to achieve significant bandwidth enhancement in a simple fashion is to phase modulate with a filtered noise source. We will demonstrate here that, in this case the stochastic nature of noise requires an inclusion of length dependent corrections to the SBS threshold enhancement. This effect becomes particularly significant for short fiber lengths common to most high power fiber amplifiers.
We study a re-configurable nonreciprocal fiber ring cavity setup to generate tunable optical frequency combs. Coherent combs can be obtained by finely exploiting bi-chromatic Brillouin lasing and cascaded four-wave mixing in the nonlinear fiber cavity. We introduce a numerical model of the cavity system, which is validated by comparisons with experiments. Our work shows the importance of the mode pulling effect, controlled by the pump laser detuning, in setting the dynamics of the comb. This effect along with the impact of multimode lasing had been overlooked in previous fiber experiments. We …
The long-term lasing dynamics of Brillouin Fiber Lasers was recently shown to be governed by an intrinsic thermal feedback which stabilizes the lasing frequency at the lower half of the gain line. We show that this feedback can be utilized by means of pump modulation to greatly control this dynamics. Specifically, we demonstrate experimentally a bi-stable fiber laser where switching between lasing modes is possible by either controlling the cavity length or pump power. An inherent hysteretic response ensures the long-term stability of the laser in each mode. Excellent agreement is found betwee…
A passive white light cavity (WLC) based on a fiber resonator can be used for high-bandwidth optical data buffering. Here, we report on experimental studies of such a WLC, employing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)for producing the negative dispersion, using two different configurations. In one configuration, an absorption peak produced by a Brillouin pump is used. In the other configuration, two gain peaks produced by two separate Brillouin pumps are employed. In each case, we see evidence of the WLC effect. However, the range of parameters accessible experimentally limits the degree of …
A watt-level ultrahigh optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) tunable Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) has been demonstrated.By optimizing the length of the single mode fiber (SMF) cavity at 11m and its output ratio at sixty percent, 1.04 W output power, as well as stable SLM operation is obtained at 2.24 W pump power. The single pass cavity BFL has the advantage that Brillouin pump frequency doesn't need to match the cavity mode, thus the stability is greatly improved. As only SMF is used in the cavity, the operate wavelength can be tunable without the restriction from…
We measure the Brillouin gain spectra in two cores (the central core and one of the outer cores) of a ~3-m-long, silica-based, 7-core multi-core fiber (MCF) with incident light of 1550 nm wavelength, and investigate the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and its dependence on strain and temperature. The BFSs of both the cores are ~10.92 GHz, and the strain- and temperature-dependence coefficients of the BFS in the central core are 484.8 MHz/% and 1.08 MHz/K, respectively, whereas those in the outer core are 516.9 MHz/% and 1.03 MHz/K. All of these values are not largely different from those in a …
We describe the use of fiber Brillouin amplification (FBA) for the coherent transmission of optical frequencies over a 480 km long optical fiber link. FBA uses the transmission fiber itself for efficient, bi-directional coherent amplification of weak signals with pump powers around 30 mW. In a test setup we measured the gain and the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of FBA and compared it to that of the widely used uni-directional Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) and to our recently built bi-directional EDFA. We measured also the phase noise introduced by the FBA and used a new and si…
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has many applications, for example, in sensing, microwave photonics and signal processing. Here we report the first experimental study of SBS in chiral photonic crystal fiber (PCF), which displays optical activity and robustly maintains circular polarization states against external perturbations. As a result, circularly polarized pump light is cleanly back-scattered into a Stokes signal with the orthogonal circular polarization state, as is required by angular momentum conservation. By comparison, untwisted PCF generates a Stokes signal with an unpredictab…
We derive formal selection rules for Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in structured waveguides. Using a group-theoretical approach, we show how the waveguide symmetry determines which optical and acoustic modes interact for both forward and backward SBS. We present a general framework for determining this interaction and give important examples for SBS in waveguides with rectangular, triangular and hexagonal symmetry. The important role played by degeneracy of the optical modes is illustrated. These selection rules are important for SBS-based device design and for a full understanding the…
We report the superluminal phenomenon of both Stokes and pump light in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) via an optical-fiber ring lasing resonator. In our experiment, the superluminal generation of Stokes light firstly delayed with 33.79 ns and then propagated with the advancement of 93.34 ns within an 8-m single mode fiber (SMF), when the pump power increased from the SBS threshold to a higher power. This proves the first evidence that the optical interaction is determined by the group velocity even at the negative group velocity superluminal propagation. It is important that, this impli…
Here we identify a new form of optomechanical coupling in gas-filled hollow-core fibers. Stimulated forward Brillouin scattering is observed in air in the core of a photonic bandgap fiber. A single resonance is observed at 35 MHz, which corresponds to the first excited axial-radial acoustic mode in the air-filled core. The linewidth and coupling strengths are determined by the acoustic loss and electrostrictive coupling in air, respectively. A simple analytical model, refined by numerical simulations, is developed that accurately predicts the Brillouin coupling strength and frequency from the …
We have developed a conceptual design for an Active Fast Light Fiber Optic Sensor (AFLIFOS) that can perform simultaneously or separately as a gyroscope (differential mode effect) and a sensor for acceleration, strain, and other common mode effects. Two Brillouin lasers in opposite directions and separated in frequency by several free spectral ranges are used for this sensor. By coupling two auxiliary resonators to the primary fiber resonator, we produce superluminal effects for two laser modes. We develop a detailed theoretical model for optimizing the design of the AFLIFOS, and show that the…
In long-haul optical continuous-wave frequency transfer via fiber, remote bidirectional Er$^+$-doped fiber amplifiers are commonly used to mitigate signal attenuation. We demonstrate for the first time the ultrastable transfer of an optical frequency using a remote fiber Brillouin amplifier, placed in a server room along the link. Using it as the only means of remote amplification, on a 660 km loop of installed underground fiber we bridge distances of 250 km and 160 km between amplifications. Over several days of uninterrupted measurement we find an instability of the frequency transfer (Allan…
We developed an alternative configuration of simplified Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry, which can overcome the drawbacks of the original configuration. This system uses, as reference light, the light that is Fresnel reflected at a partial reflection point artificially produced near an optical circulator. We show that the influence of the 0th correlation peak fixed at the partial reflection point can be suppressed by replacing the nearby fibers with other fibers having different Brillouin frequency shift values (here, multi-mode fibers are used). Finally, we demonstrate a di…
We report on an accurate closed form analytical model for the gain of a Brillouin fiber amplifier that accounts for material loss in the depleted pump regime. We determined the operational model limits with respect to its relevant parameters and pump regimes through both numerical and experimental validation. As such, our results enable accurate performance prediction of Brillouin fiber amplifiers operating in the weak pump, high gain, and saturation regimes alike.
An analytical method is presented for designing N-coupled multi-core fibers with zero differential group delay. This approach effectively reduces the problem to a system of N-1 algebraic equations involving the associated coupling coefficients and propagation constants as obtained from coupled mode theory. Once the parameters of one of the cores are specified, the roots of the resulting N-1 equations can then be used to determine the characteristics of the remaining waveguide elements. Using this technique, a number of pertinent geometrical configurations are investigated in order to minimize …

We report a novel technique to detect dynamic strain variations simultaneously at multiple locations. Our technique is based on Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis implemented through external phase modulation to generate multiple independently-accessible correlation peaks within the sensing fiber. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the precise determination of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) from multiple locations independently, and the corresponding results are validated through controlled experiments. Two correlation peaks are generated within a 1 km long fiber and their …
We describe an easy-to-implement technique that allows for a complete experimental characterization of sub-wavelength diameter tapered optical fibers. Our method is based on a direct and fast numerical analysis of the backward Brillouin spectrum measured using a highly sensitive single-ended heterodyne coherent detection. It can be performed in situ without any manipulation nor optical alignment of optical microfibers. Sensitivity as high as a few nanometer for fiber diameter ranging from 500 nm to 1.2 micron is reported. This new method may help for the design and characterization of optical …
The resonance wavelength, where a fiber mode converter grating written using periodic external perturbations achieves phase matching, is both a critical design parameter and a device parameter. However, a method to precisely predict the resonance wavelength for any new fiber and grating writing apparatus has been missing so far. The missing link was the lack of direct experimental methods to estimate the modified intermodal phase after writing with external perturbations. The presented method can make this estimation from a single experiment, over a broad wavelength range, based on a novel mat…
In this work, a numerical modal decomposition approach is applied to model the optical field of laser light after propagating through a highly multi-mode fiber. The algorithm for the decomposition is based on the reconstruction of measured intensity profiles along the laser beam caustic with consideration of intermodal degrees of coherence derived from spectral analysis. To enhance the accuracy of the model, different approaches and strategies are applied and discussed. The presented decomposition into a set of LP modes enables both the wave-optical simulation of radiation transport by highly …

We present a novel, real-time, experimental technique for linear and nonlinear Brillouin zone spectroscopy of photonic lattices. The method relies on excitation with random-phase waves and far-field visualization of the spatial spectrum of the light exiting the lattice. Our technique facilitates mapping the borders of the extended Brillouin zones and the areas of normal and anomalous dispersion within each zone. For photonic lattices with defects (e.g., photonic crystal fibers), our technique enables far-field visualization of the defect mode overlaid on the extended Brillouin zone structure o…
Forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (F-SBS) is a third-order nonlinear-optical mechanism that couples between two co-propagating optical fields and a guided acoustic mode in a common medium. F-SBS gives rise to nonlinear wave mixing along optical fibers, which adds up with four-wave mixing induced by the Kerr effect. In this work, we report the distributed mapping of nonlinear wave mixing processes involving both mechanisms along standard single-mode fiber, in analysis, simulation and experiment. Measurements are based on a multi-tone, optical time-domain reflectometry setup, which is high…
We study the role of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a fiber cavity by numerical simulations and a simple theoretical model and find good agreement between experiment, simulation and theory. We also investigate an optomechanical system based on a fiber cavity in the presence on the nonlinear Brillouin scattering. Using simulation and theory, we show that this hybrid optomechanical system increases optomechanical damping for low mechanical resonance frequencies in the unresolved sideband regime. Furthermore, optimal damping occurs for blue detuning in stark contrast to standard optomechanics…

We formulate a generic concept of engineering optical modes and mechanical resonances in a pair of optically-coupled light-guiding membranes for achieving cascaded light scattering to multiple Stokes and anti-Stokes orders. By utilizing the light pressure exerted on the webs and their induced flexural vibrations, featuring flat phonon dispersion curve with a non-zero cut-off frequency, we show how to realize exact phase-matching between multiple successive optical side-bands. We predict continuous-wave generation of frequency combs for fundamental and high-order optical modes mediated via back…
Guided Acoustic Wave Brillouin Scattering (GAWBS) generates phase and polarization noise of light propagating in glass fibers. This excess noise affects the performance of various experiments operating at the quantum noise limit. We experimentally demonstrate the reduction of GAWBS noise in a photonic crystal fiber in a broad frequency range using cavity sound dynamics. We compare the noise spectrum to the one of a standard fiber and observe a 10-fold noise reduction in the frequency range up to 200 MHz. Based on our measurement results as well as on numerical simulations we establish a model …
A direct-detection Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is proposed and demonstrated by using an up-conversion single-photon detector and a fiber Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer (FFP-SI). Taking advantage of high signal-to-noise ratio of the detector and high spectrum resolution of the FFP-SI, the Brillouin spectrum along a polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is recorded on a multiscaler with a small data size directly. In contrast with conventional BOTDR adopting coherent detection, photon-counting BOTDR is simpler in structure and easier in data processing. In the demonst…
The analysis of substances outside the cladding has challenged the optical fiber sensors community for decades. A common solution relies on the propagation of light in cladding modes. However, the coupling of light to/from these modes is typically based on permanent gratings in specific locations, which restrict the sensors to point measurements only. In this work, we present dynamic, random-access coupling of light between core and cladding modes of standard fibers, in arbitrarily located short sections. Coupling is based on the stimulation of Brillouin dynamic gratings by two coded pump wave…

Pulse compression processing based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in an optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Broadband microwave signal is electro-optically modulated onto the pump lightwave that is launched into one end of the fiber. Acoustic wave in the fiber inherits the amplitude and phase information of the pump lightwave and thus the coupling between the acoustic wave and pump lightwave leads to the auto-correlated process of the pump lightwave as well as the modulated microwave signal. Derivation of the SBS coupling equations shows that the short-pul…
