In recent years, evidence for lepton flavour universality violation beyond the Standard Model has been accumulated. In this context, a singly charged $SU(2)_L$ singlet scalar ($ϕ^\pm$) is very interesting, as it can only have flavour off-diagonal couplings to neutrinos and charged leptons, therefore necessarily violating lepton flavour (universality). In fact, it gives a (necessarily constructive) tree-level effect in $\ell\to\ell^\primeνν$ processes, while contributing to charged lepton flavour violating only at the loop-level. Therefore, it can provide a common explanation of the hints for new physics in
$τ\toμνν/τ(μ)\to eνν$ and of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly. Such an explanation predicts ${\rm Br }[τ\to eγ]$ to be of the order of a few times $10^{-11}$ while ${ \rm Br}[τ\to eμμ]$ can be of the order of $10^{-9}$ for order one couplings and therefore in the reach of forthcoming experiments. Furthermore, we derive a {novel} coupling-independent lower limit on the scalar mass of $\approx 200\,$GeV by recasting LHC slepton searches. In the scenario preferred by low energy precision data, the lower limit is even strengthened to $\approx300\,$GeV, showing the complementary between LHC searches and flavour observables. Furthermore, we point out that this model can be tested by reinterpreting DM mono-photon searches at future $e^+e^-$ colliders.
The singly charged $SU(2)_L$ singlet scalar, with its necessarily flavour violating couplings to leptons, lends itself particularly well for an explanation of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly and of hints for lepton flavour universality violation in $τ\to μ\bar νν$. In a setup addressing both anomalies, we predict loop-induced effects in $τ\to eγ$ and in $τ\to eμμ$. A recast of ATLAS selectron and smuon searches allows us to derive a coupling-independent lower limit of $\approx 200$ GeV on the mass of the singly charged singlet scalar. At a future $e^+e^-$ collider, dark matter mono-photon searches c…
We consider the generation of neutrino masses via a singly-charged scalar singlet. Under general assumptions we identify two distinct structures for the neutrino mass matrix. This yields a constraint for the antisymmetric Yukawa coupling of the singly-charged scalar singlet to two left-handed lepton doublets, irrespective of how the breaking of lepton-number conservation is achieved. The constraint disfavours large hierarchies among the Yukawa couplings. We study the implications for the phenomenology of lepton-flavour universality, measurements of the $W$-boson mass, flavour violation in the …
The coming flavour precision era will allow to uncover various patterns of flavour violation in different New Physics scenarios. We discuss different classes of them. A simple extension of the Standard Model that generally introduces new sources of flavour and CP violation as well as right-handed currents is the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the SM gauge group. In such Z' models correlations between various flavour observables emerge that could test and distinguish different Z' scenarios. A concrete model with flavour violating Z' couplings is the 331 model based on the gauge group SU(3…
We study lepton flavour-violating interactions which could result in the $τ$-lepton production in the $ν_μN$ scattering or in $μ\to τ$ conversion on nucleons at high energies. Phenomenological bounds on the strength of $\barτν_μ\bar{q}q^{'}$ interactions are extracted from the combined result of the NOMAD and CHORUS experiments on searching for $ν_μ - ν_τ$ oscillations. Some of these bounds supersede limits from rare decays. We also propose a ``missing energy'' type experiment searching for $μ- τ$ conversion on nucleons. The experiment can be performed at a present accelerator or at a future n…
In the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, we compare the lower bounds on the scale of new physics possibly contributing to the $f\bar{f}h$ effective couplings, obtained from the measurements of different observables, under the assumption that the Wilson coefficients of the relevant dim 6 operators respect certain flavour structure: either the Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) ansatz or a flavour symmetry, often invoked to explain the observed pattern of fermion masses and mixings. We perform a global analysis of the bounds following from the limits on the diagonal couplings …
We present a new method to expose the dead cone effect at colliders using iterative declustering techniques. Iterative declustering allows to unwind the jet clustering and to access the subjets or branches at different depths of the jet tree. Our method consists on declustering the heavy flavour-tagged jet using Cambridge-Achen algorithm following the branch containing the heavy flavour at each step and registering the kinematics of the complementary untagged prong. The kinematics of the complementary untagged prong fill a Lund map representing the gluon radiation off the heavy flavour quark a…
The LHCb Collaboration recently gave an update on testing lepton flavour universality with $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \ell^+ \ell^-$, in which a 3.1 standard deviations from the standard model prediction was observed. The g-2 experiment also reports a 3.3 standard deviations from the standard model on muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement. These deviations could be explained by introducing new particles including leptoquarks. In this paper, we show the possibility to search for heavy spin-1 leptoquarks at a future TeV scale muon collider by performing studies from three channels: 1) same flavou…
We determine the ground state and first excited state masses of singly and doubly charmed spin 1/2 and 3/2 baryons with positive and negative parity. Configurations with $N_f=2+1$ non-perturbatively improved Wilson-clover fermions were employed, with the same quark action also being used for the valence quarks, including the charm. The spectrum is calculated for pion masses in the range $M_π\sim 259-460$ MeV at a lattice spacing $a\sim 0.075$ fm. Finite volume effects are studied comparing lattices with two different linear spatial extents ($1.8\,{\rm fm}$ and $2.4\,{\rm fm}$). The physical po…
After a summary of the motivations for searching flavour violating decays and electric dipole moments in the leptonic sector, I briefly sketch the present status of the limits on lepton-slepton misalignement and discuss the potentialities of the planned experimental improvements. Candidates for theories beyond the Standard Model have to satisfy all these experimental constraints; I will discuss in particular how the supersymmetric SM extended with the see-saw faces the flavour problem.
A discovery of flavour-changing Higgs-boson decays would constitute an undeniable signal of new physics. We derive model-independent constraints on the tch and tuh couplings that arise from the bounds on hadronic electric dipole moments. Comparisons of the present and future sensitivities with both the direct LHC constraints and the indirect limits from D-meson physics are also presented.
While the triplet-like Higgses up to a few hundred GeV masses are already excluded for a vast region of the model parameter space from the LHC searches, strikingly, there is a region of this parameter space that is beyond the reach of the existing LHC searches, and doubly/singly-charged and neutral Higgses as light as 200 GeV or even lighter are still allowed by the LHC data. We study several search strategies targeting different parts of this LHC elusive parameter space at two configurations of $e^-e^+$ colliders -- 500 GeV and 1 TeV centre of mass energies. We find that a vast region of this…
In models with extended Higgs sectors, Higgs-boson-mediated Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) can naturally appear. We study the physics potential of an electron-photon collider %as an option of the International Linear Collider on searching LFV processes $e^-γ\to\ell^-φ(\ell=μ,τ; φ=H, A)$ where $H$ and $A$ are extra CP even and odd Higgs bosons, respectively, in the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the effective two Higgs doublet model. The production cross section can be significantly large for the maximal allowed values of the LFV coupling constants under the current experimental data…
Singly and doubly charged Higgs bosons in the Higgs Triplet Model mediate the lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays tau to \bar{l}ll and mu to e gamma. The LFV decay rates are proportional to products of two triplet Yukawa couplings (h_{ij}) which can be expressed in terms of the parameters of the neutrino mass matrix and an unknown triplet vacuum expectation value. We determine the parameter space of the neutrino mass matrix in which a signal for tau to \bar{l}ll and/or mu to e gamma is possible at ongoing and planned experiments. The conditions for respecting the stringent upper limit for mu…
We discuss how the Zee-Babu model can be tested combining information from neutrino data, low-energy experiments and direct searches at the LHC. We update previous analysis in the light of the recent measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$, the new MEG limits on $μ\rightarrow e γ$, the lower bounds on doubly-charged scalars coming from LHC data, and, of course, the discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs boson by ATLAS and CMS. In particular, we find that the new singly- and doubly-charged scalars are accessible at the second run of the LHC, yielding different signatures depending on the neutri…
We discuss the potential of $τ$-charm and B factories for the search of new physics through the study of rare $τ$ decays. We consider decays that involve the violation of lepton flavour conservation. Such decays bear a close relationship to the physics of neutrino mass and the properties of the lepton sector of the electroweak theory.
We study the collider phenomenology of a simplified model containing a right-handed $W$ in which the $W_R$ couples predominantly to the third generation in the quark sector. The model also includes a light Majorana neutrino, with $M_1\sim {\cal O}(100)$ GeV, giving rise to lepton-number-violating signatures that are visible at the LHC. Taking into account all the searches from the LHC and Tevatron, we find that this $W_R$ can still be as light as $M_R \sim 300$ GeV. We show that this type of new physics, and others like it, can be detected at the LHC using final states with three same-sign sam…
We first study the hadronic lepton flavor violating tau decays within the littlest Higgs model with T-parity (including one or two pseudoscalars, or a vector resonance). We consider the case where only T-odd particles and partner fermions contribute, and also its extension including Majorana neutrinos coming from an inverse seesaw. In both cases our mean values lie only one order of magnitude below current upper limits, strengthening the case of searching for these decays in the quest for new physics.
In this work we assess the potential of discovering new physics by searching for lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) decays of the $Z$ boson, $Z\to \ell_i \ell_j$, at the proposed circular $e^+e^-$ colliders CEPC and FCC-ee. Both projects plan to run at the $Z$-pole as a Tera Z factory, i.e., collecting $\mathcal O\left(10^{12}\right)$ $Z$ decays. In order to discuss the discovery potential in a model-independent way, we revisit the LFV $Z$ decays in the context of the Standard Model effective field theory and study the indirect constraints from LFV $μ$ and $τ$ decays on the operators that can indu…
Upcoming Lepton Flavour Violation experiments searching for $μ\rightarrow 3e$ and $μ$ to $ e $ conversion in nuclei processes will provide new opportunities to test the fundamental properties of the neutrino sector, and possibly the origin of matter. In recent work, it was shown that the Type II Seesaw mechanism alone can simultaneously explain the neutrino masses, Leptogenesis, and inflation. A key prediction of this model was the possibility of signals being produced in Lepton Flavour Violation decays. Searches at future experiments such as Mu3e and COMET will be integral to determining the …
We study new top flavor violating resonances that are singly produced in association with a top at the LHC. Such top flavor violating states could be responsible for the Tevatron top forward-backward asymmetry. Since top flavor violating states can directly decay to a top (or anti-top) and jet, and are produced in conjunction with another (oppositely charged) top, the direct signature of such states is a t j (or tbar j) resonance in t tbar j events. In general, these states can be very light and have O(1) couplings to the top sector so that they are copiously produced. We present a search stra…
We propose to investigate flavour changing neutral currents in the $c \to u γ$ transition through the measurement of the difference between $Γ(D^0 \to ρ^0 γ)$ and $Γ(D^0 \to ωγ)$. This is based on the observation that $D^0 \to (d \bar d) γ$ is due to long distance physics while $D^0 \to (u \bar u) γ$ arises from the $c \to u γ$ transition. The effect of $ρ- ω$ mixing is included. A difference in the decay widths of more than about 30% would be indicative of new physics.
In this article we propose a simple model which can provide a combined explanation of the $Z\to b\bar b$ forward-backward asymmetry, the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly (CAA), $τ\toμνν$ and $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data. This model is obtained by extending the Standard Model (SM) by two heavy vector-like quarks (an $SU(2)_L$ doublet (singlet) with hypercharge $-5/6$ (-1/3)), two new scalars (a neutral and a singly charged one) and a gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry. The mixing of the new quarks with the SM ones, after electroweak symmetry breaking, does not only explain $Z\to b\bar b$ data but also generates a lep…
We show how B -> pi pi decays can be used to search for new physics in the b -> d flavour-changing neutral current. One needs one piece of theoretical input, which we take to be a prediction for P/T, the ratio of the penguin and tree amplitudes in Bd -> pi+ pi-. If present, new physics can be detected over most of the parameter space. If α(ϕ_2) can be obtained independently, measurements of B+ -> pi+ pi0 and Bd/Bd(bar) -> pi0 pi0 are not even needed.
The Higgs-portal lepton flavor violation is studied in a vectorlike lepton model. For evading the constraints from rare $Z\to \ell^\pm_i \ell^\mp_j$ decays, we introduce two triplet vectorlike leptons, $(1,3)_{-1}$ and $(1,3)_{0}$. The resultant branching ratio for $h\to μτ$ can be up to $10^{-4}$ when the constraints from the invisible $Z$ decays are applied. As a result, the signal strength for $ττ$ channel has a $12\%$ deviation from the standard model prediction, while the muon $g-2$ is two-order of magnitude smaller than the data and $BR(τ\to μγ)$ is of order of $10^{-12}$. A predicted do…
In certain new physics scenarios, a singly charged Higgs boson can couple to both fermions and $W^\pm Z$ at tree level. We develop new strategies beyond current experimental searches using $pp\to jjH^\pm$, $H^\pm \to tb $ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). With the effective $H^\pm W^\mp Z$ and $H^\pm tb$ couplings we perform a model-independent analysis at the collision energy $\sqrt{s}=13$~TeV with the integrated luminosity of $3~\text{ab}^{-1}$. We derive the discovery prospects and exclusion limits for the charged Higgs boson in the mass range from 200~GeV to 1~TeV. With $|F_{WZ}|,|A_t|\s…
Within an effective-field-theory framework, we present a model-independent analysis of the potential of discovering new physics by searching for lepton flavour violation in heavy quarkonium decays and, more in general, we study the phenomenology of lepton-flavour-violating (LFV) 2 quark - 2 lepton ($2q2\ell$) operators with two charm or bottom fields. We compute the constraints from LFV muon and tau decays on the new-physics operators that can induce LFV processes involving $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ systems, thus providing a comprehensive list of indirect upper limits on processes such as $J/ψ\t…
We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena, by deriving Markovian master equations that describe the time-evolution of particle number densities in a statistical ensemble with arbitrary flavour content. As an application of this general formalism, we study flavour effects in a scenario of resonant leptogenesis (RL) and obtain the flavour-covariant evolution equations for heavy-neutrino and lepton number densities. This provides a complete and unified description of RL, capturing three distinct physical phenomena: (i) the resonant mixing between the heavy-neutrino st…
The simplest extension of the SM that generally introduces new sources of flavour and CP violation as well as right-handed currents is the addition of a U(1) gauge symmetry to the SM gauge group. If the corresponding heavy gauge boson Z' mediates FCNC processes in the quark sector at tree-level, these new physics contributions imply a pattern of deviations from SM expectations for FCNC processes depending only on Z' couplings to fermions and on its mass. This implies stringent correlations between Delta F=2 and Delta F=1 observables which govern the landscape of the allowed parameter space for…
Recent signals for narrow hadrons containing heavy and light flavours are compared with quark model predictions for spectroscopy, strong decays, and radiative transitions. In particular, the production and identification of excited charmed and cs states are examined with emphasis on elucidating the nature of $0^+$ and $1^+$ states. Roughly 200 strong decay amplitudes of $D$ and $D_s$ states up to 3.3 GeV are presented. Applications include determining flavour content in $η$ mesons and the mixing angle in $P$ and $D$ wave states and probes of putative molecular states. We advocate searching for…
In many extensions of the Standard Model flavour changing neutral current processes can be mediated by tree-level heavy neutral scalars and/or pseudo-scalars H^0(A^0). This generally introduces new sources of flavour violation and CP violation as well as left-handed and right-handed scalar currents. These new physics contributions imply a pattern of deviations from SM expectations for FCNC processes that depends only on the couplings of H^0(A^0) to fermions and on their masses. In situations in which a single H^0 or A^0 dominates NP contributions stringent correlations between Delta F=2 and De…
Searching for vectorlike $T$ quarks in the $T\to tZ$ channel at a future muon-proton collider

The nuclear aspects of flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, predicted by various new-physics models to occur in the presence of nuclei, are examined by computing the relevant nuclear matrix elements within the context of the quasi-particle RPA using realistic strong two-body forces. One of our aims is to explore the role of the non-standard interactions (NSI) in the leptonic sector and specifically: (i) in lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes involving the neutral particles $ν_\ell$ and $\tildeν_\ell$, $\ell = e,μ,τ$ and (ii) in charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) process…
We propose a gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ extended two Higgs doublet model to explain both neutrino mass and lepton anomalous magnetic moments ($g-2$). Neutrino mass is generated via an inverse seesaw mechanism by introducing singlet fermions. Especially, we update the result of muon $g-2$ in light of the very recent report by E989 experiment at Fermilab, indicating $a_μ^{\rm FNAL}=116592040(54)\times 10^{-11}$. Combining BNL result, we have the following deviation from the standard model prediction $Δa_μ=(2.51\pm 5.9)\times10^{-10}$ at 4.2 $σ$. Thanks to an appropriate assignment for $U(1)_{B-L}\times…
In recent years, intriguing hints for the violation of Lepton Flavour Universality (LFU) have been accumulated in semileptonic $B$ decays, both in the neutral-current transitions $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ (i.e., $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$) and the charged-current transitions $b\to c\ell^-\barν_\ell$ (i.e., $R_D$, $R_{D^*}$ and $R_{J/ψ}$). LHCb has reported deviations from the Standard Model (SM) expectations in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ processes as well as in the ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$, which together point at New Physics (NP) affecting muons with a high significance. Furthermore, hints for LFU violation in $R_…
Lepton charge asymmetries can be used as an alternative means of searching for new physics. They are interesting because they are small in the Standard Model and therefore, necessarily evidence new physics. In this work we explore the use of lepton asymmetries as a probe of the flavour structure of the left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation. We find that new physics may enhance the magnitude of $a_{SL}$ up to the precent level within the appropiate parameter space.
The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is an upgrade of the Belle / KEKB experiment. It will start physics data taking from 2018 and with $40$ times luminosity, its goal is to accumulate 50 $ab^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data. The physics programs have a wide range of areas for new physics, such as more constraints on CKM Unitarity Triangle, searching for charged Higgs, direct CPV, Lepton Flavour Violation and dark matter. In this monograph, we will review the current status of Belle II and SuperKEKB construction and introduce the main physics opportunities at this facility.
The couplings of the low scale type I see-saw model are severely constrained by the requirement of reproducing the correct neutrino mass and mixing parameters, by the non-observation of lepton number and charged lepton flavour violating processes and by electroweak precision data. We show that all these constraints still allow for the possibility of an exotic Higgs decay channel into a light neutrino and a heavy neutrino with a sizable branching ratio. We also estimate the prospects to observe this decay at the LHC and discuss its complementarity to the indirect probes of the low scale type I …
We provide an updated scan of the allowed parameter space of the two-loop Zee-Babu model for neutrino mass. Taking into account most recent experimental data on $μ\to eγ$ as well as the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ we obtain lower bounds on the masses of the singly and doubly charged scalars of between 1 to 2 TeV, with some dependence on perturbativity and fine-tuning requirements. This makes the scalars difficult to observe at LHC with 14 TeV even with optimistic assumptions on the luminosity, and would require a multi-TeV linear collider to see the scalar resonances. We point out, however, that a s…
HiggsBounds 2.0.0 is a computer code which tests both neutral and charged Higgs sectors of arbitrary models against the current exclusion bounds from the Higgs searches at LEP and the Tevatron. As input, it requires a selection of model predictions, such as Higgs masses, branching ratios, effective couplings and total decay widths. HiggsBounds 2.0.0 then uses the expected and observed topological cross section limits from the Higgs searches to determine whether a given parameter scenario of a model is excluded at the 95% C.L. by those searches. Version 2.0.0 represents a significant extension …
In this article we investigate the prospects of searching for sterile neutrinos in lowscale seesaw scenarios via the lepton flavour violating (but lepton number conserving) dilepton dijet signature. In our study, we focus on the final state $e^\pm μ^\mp jj$ at the HL-LHC and the FCC-hh (or the SppC). We perform a multivariate analysis at the detector level including the dominant SM backgrounds from di-top, di-boson, and tri-boson. Under the assumption of the active-sterile neutrino mixings $|V_{ l N}|^2=|θ_e|^2=|θ_μ|^2$ and $|V_{ τN}|^2 = |θ_τ|^2=0$, the sensitivities on the signal production …
