We present the 1.4GHz radio luminosity functions (RLFs) of galaxies in the COSMOS field, measured above and below the $5σ$ detection threshold, using a Bayesian model-fitting technique. The radio flux-densities from VLA-COSMOS 3-GHz data, are extracted at the position of stellar mass-limited near-infrared (NIR) galaxies. We fit a local RLF model, which is a combination of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star-forming galaxy (SFG), in 10 redshift bins with a pure luminosity evolution (PLE) model. We show that the evolution strength is similar to literature values up to $z\sim 1.6$. Beyond $z\sim 2$, we find that the SFG RLF exhibits a negative evolution ($L^*$ moves to lower luminosities) due to the decrease in low stellar-mass sources in our stellar mass-limited sample at high redshifts. From the RLF for SFGs, we determine the evolution in the cosmic star-formation-rate density (SFRD), which we find to be consistent with the established behaviour up to $z\sim 1$. Beyond $z\sim 1$ cosmic SFRD declines if one assumes an evolving infrared--radio correlation (IRRC), whereas it stays relatively higher if one adopts a constant IRRC. We find that the form of the relation between radio luminosity and SFR is therefore crucial in measuring the cosmic SFRD from radio data. We investigate the effects of stellar mass on the total RLF by splitting our sample into low ($10^{8.5} \leq M/\mathrm{M}_{\odot} \leq 10^{10}$) and high ($M>10^{10}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) stellar-mass subsets. We find that the SFRD is dominated by sources in the high stellar masses bin, at all redshifts.
This work studies the correlation among environmental density and radio AGN presence up to $z = 2$. Using data from the photometric COSMOS survey and its radio 1.4 GHz follow-up (VLA-COSMOS), a sample of radio AGNs has been defined. The environment was studied using the richness distributions inside a parallelepiped with base side of 1 Mpc and height proportional to the photometric redshift precision. Radio AGNs are found to be always located in environments significantly richer than those around galaxies with no radio emission. Moreover, a distinction based on radio AGN power shows that the s…
We present the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project based on 384 hours of observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 3 GHz (10 cm) toward the two square degree Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. The final mosaic reaches a median rms of 2.3 uJy/beam over the two square degrees at an angular resolution of 0.75". To fully account for the spectral shape and resolution variations across the broad (2 GHz) band, we image all data with a multiscale, multifrequency synthesis algorithm. We present a catalog of 10,830 radio sources down to 5 sigma, out of which 67 are combined from mul…

In this data paper we present and characterise the multi-component radio sources identified in the VLA-COSMOS Large Project at 3 GHz (0.75 arcsec resolution, 2.3 μJy/beam rms), i.e. the radio sources which are composed of two or more radio blobs. The classification of objects into multi-components was done by visual inspection of 351 of the brightest and most extended blobs from a sample of 10,899 blobs identified by the automatic code blobcat. For that purpose we used multi-wavelength information of the field, such as the 1.4-GHz VLA-COSMOS data and the UltraVISTA stacked mosaic available for …
We present deep 3 GHz VLA observations of the potentially recoiling black hole CID-42 in the COSMOS field. This galaxy shows two optical nuclei in the HST/ACS image and a large velocity offset of ~ 1300 km/s between the broad and narrow H beta emission line although the spectrum is not spacially resolved (Civano et al. 2010). The new 3 GHz VLA data has a bandwidth of 2 GHz and to correctly interpret the flux densities imaging was done with two different methods: multi-scale multi-frequency synthesis and spectral windows stacking. The final resolutions and sensitivities of these maps are 0.7" w…
We present 90 cm VLA imaging of the COSMOS field, comprising a circular area of 3.14 square degrees at 8.0"x6.0" angular resolution with an average rms of 0.5 mJy/beam. The extracted catalog contains 182 sources (down to 5.5sigma), 30 of which are multi-component sources. Using Monte Carlo artificial source simulations we derive the completeness of the catalog, and we show that our 90 cm source counts agree very well with those from previous studies. Using X-ray, NUV-NIR and radio COSMOS data to investigate the population mix of our 90 cm radio sample, we find that our sample is dominated by a…
Using a Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) L-band (1-2 GHz) survey covering $\sim100$\,deg$^2$ of the Stripe 82 field, we have obtained a catalogue of 2716 radio AGN. For these AGN, we investigate the impact of galaxy density on 1.4 GHz radio luminosity ($L_{1.4}$). We determine their close environment densities using the surface density parameter, $Σ_N,$ for $N=2$ and $N=5,$ which we bin by redshift to obtain a pseudo-3D galaxy density measure. Matching the radio AGN to sources without radio detections in terms of redshift, $K-$band magnitude and ($g-K$)-colour index, we obtain samples of …
We make use of ultra-deep 3 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the COSMOS field from the multi-band COSMOS-XS survey to infer radio luminosity functions (LFs) of star-forming galaxies (SFGs). Using $\sim$1300 SFGs with redshifts out to $z\sim4.6$, and fixing the faint and bright end shape of the radio LF to the local values, we find a strong redshift trend that can be fitted by pure luminosity evolution with the luminosity parameter given by $α_L \propto (3.40 \pm 0.11) - (0.48 \pm 0.06)z$. We then combine the ultra-deep COSMOS-XS data-set with the shallower VLA-COSMOS $\mathr…
We study the composition of the faint radio population selected from the VLA-COSMOS 3GHz Large Project, a radio continuum survey performed at 10 cm wavelength. The survey covers the full 2 square degree COSMOS field with mean $rms\sim2.3$ $μ$Jy/beam, cataloging 10,899 source components above $5\times rms$. By combining these radio data with UltraVISTA, optical, near-infrared, and Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared data, as well as X-ray data from the Chandra Legacy, and Chandra COSMOS surveys, we gain insight into the emission mechanisms within our radio sources out to redshifts of $z\sim5$. From these…
We present an investigation of radio luminosity functions (LFs) and number counts based on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. The radio-selected sample of 7826 galaxies with robust optical/near-infrared counterparts with excellent photometric coverage allows us to construct the total radio LF since z~5.7. Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, we fit the redshift dependent pure luminosity evolution model to the data and compare it with previously published VLA-COSMOS LFs obtained on individual populations of radio-selected star-forming galaxies and galaxies …
($ABRIDGED$) We probe the physical properties and large-scale environment of radio AGN in the faintest FR population to-date, and link them to their radio structure. We use the VLA-COSMOS Large Project at 3 GHz, with resolution and sensitivity of 0".75 and 2.3 $μ$Jy/beam, respectively, to explore the FR dichotomy down to $μ$Jy levels. We classify objects as FRIs, FRIIs or hybrid FRI/FRII based on the surface-brightness distribution along their radio structure. Our control sample is the jet-less/compact radio AGN (COM AGN) which show excess radio emission at 3 GHz VLA-COSMOS exceeding what is c…
Using the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), we report six detections of CO(J=1-0) emission and one upper limit in z=2-3 galaxies originally detected in higher-J CO emission in the Atacama Large submillimeter/Millimeter Array (ALMA) Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS). From the CO(J=1-0) line strengths, we measure total cold molecular gas masses of M_gas = 2.4-11.6 x 10^10 (alpha_CO/3.6) Msun. We also measure a median CO(J=3-2) to CO(J=1-0) line brightness temperature ratio of r_31 = 0.84 +/- 0.26, and a CO(J=7-6) to CO(J=1-0) ratio range of r_71 <0.05 to 0.1…
We present ultra-deep, matched-resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 10 and $3$ GHz in the COSMOS field: the COSMOS-XS survey. The final 10 and $3$ GHz images cover $\sim16\rm{arcmin}^{2}$ and $\sim180\rm{arcmin}^{2}$ and reach median rms values of $0.41μ\rm{Jy\,beam}^{-1}$ and $0.53μ\rm{Jy\,beam}^{-1}$, respectively. Both images have an angular resolution of $\sim 2.0''$. To fully account for the spectral shape and resolution variations across the broad bands, we image all data with a multi-scale, multi-frequency synthesis algorithm. We present source catalogs for t…
Several problems regarding the process of galaxy formation are still open. One of them is the role played by AGN phenomena in contributing to galaxy build-up and to Star Formation (SF) quenching. On the other hand, the theory of AGN formation predicts these phenomena to be correlated with the host-galaxy environment, thus opening for links between SF quenching, environment and AGN phenomena in the galaxy formation paradigm. This work is focused on the study of the correlation between environmental density and radio AGN presence. Using data from the photometric COSMOS survey and the radio 1.4GH…
We make use of the deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) COSMOS radio observations at 3 GHz to infer radio luminosity functions of star-forming galaxies up to redshifts of z~5 based on approximately 6000 detections with reliable optical counterparts. This is currently the largest radio-selected sample available out to z~5 across an area of 2 square degrees with a sensitivity of rms=2.3 ujy/beam. By fixing the faint and bright end shape of the radio luminosity function to the local values, we find a strong redshift trend that can be fitted with a pure luminosity evolution L~(1+z)^{(3.16 +-…
As the SKA is expected to be operational in the next decade, investigations of the radio sky in the range of 100 MHz to 10 GHz have become important for simulations of the SKA observations. In determining physical properties of galaxies from radio data, the radio SED is often assumed to be described by a simple power law, usually with a spectral index of 0.7 for all sources. Even though radio SEDs have been shown to exhibit deviations from this assumption, both in differing spectral indices and complex spectral shapes, it is often presumed that their individual differences cancel out in large …
We explore the multiwavelength properties of AGN host galaxies for different classes of radio-selected AGN out to z$\lesssim$6 via a multiwavelength analysis of about 7700 radio sources in the COSMOS field. The sources were selected with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3 GHz (10 cm) within the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project, and cross-matched with multiwavelength ancillary data. This is the largest sample of high-redshift (z$\lesssim$6) radio sources with exquisite photometric coverage and redshift measurements available. We constructed a sample of moderate-to-high radiative luminosity AGN (HLAG…
We report the discovery of a candidate stellar-mass black hole in the Milky Way globular cluster M62. We detected the black hole candidate, which we term M62-VLA1, in the core of the cluster using deep radio continuum imaging from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. M62-VLA1 is a faint source, with a flux density of 18.7 +/- 1.9 microJy at 6.2 GHz and a flat radio spectrum (alpha=-0.24 +/- 0.42, for S_nu = nu^alpha). M62 is the second Milky Way cluster with a candidate stellar-mass black hole; unlike the two candidate black holes previously found in the cluster M22, M62-VLA1 is associated wit…
The radiative and jet power in active galactic nuclei is generated by accretion of material on to supermassive galactic-centre black holes. For quasars, where the radiative power is by definition very high, objects with high radio luminosities form around 10 per cent of the population, although it is not clear whether this is a stable phase. Traditionally, quasars with high radio luminosities have been thought to present jets with edge-brightened morphology (Fanaroff-Riley II - FR II) due to the limitations of previous radio surveys (i.e., FRIs were not observed as part of the quasar populatio…
(abridged) We study the composition of the faint radio population selected from the VLA-COSMOS 3GHz Large Project. The survey covers a 2.6sq.deg. area with a mean rms of ~2.3uJy/b, cataloging 10830 sources (>5sigma). Combining these radio data with optical, near-infrared (UltraVISTA), mid-infrared (Spitzer/IRAC) data, and X-ray data (Chandra), we find counterparts to radio sources for ~93% of the radio sample (in the areas of the COSMOS field not affected by saturated or bright sources in the optical to NIR bands), reaching out to z<6. We further classify the sources as star forming galaxies o…
We examine the behaviour of the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) over the range $0<z<6$ using new, highly sensitive 3GHz observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and infrared data from the Herschel Space Observatory in the 2deg$^{2}$ COSMOS field. We distinguish between objects where emission is believed to arise solely from star-formation, and those where an active galactic nucleus (AGN) is thought to be present. We account for non-detections in the radio or in the infrared using a doubly-censored survival analysis. We find that the IRRC of star-forming galaxies, quantifie…
We study a sample of 1,604 moderate-to-high radiative luminosity active galactic nuclei (HLAGN) selected at 3 GHz within the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. These were classified by combining multiple AGN diagnostics: X-ray data, mid-infrared data and broad-band spectral energy distribution fitting. We decompose the total radio 1.4 GHz luminosity ($\mathrm{L_{1.4\ GHz,TOT}}$) into the emission originating from star formation and AGN activity by measuring the excess in $\mathrm{L_{1.4\ GHz,TOT}}$ relative to the infrared-radio correlation of star-forming galaxies. To quantify the excess, for ea…
Based on a sample of over 1,800 radio AGN at redshifts out to z~5, which have typical stellar masses within ~3x(10^{10}-10^{11}) Msol, and 3 GHz radio data in the COSMOS field, we derived the 1.4 GHz radio luminosity functions for radio AGN (L_1.4GHz ~ 10^{22}-10^{27} W/Hz) out to z~5. We constrained the evolution of this population via continuous models of pure density and pure luminosity evolutions, and we found best-fit parametrizations of Phi*~(1+z)^{(2.00+/-0.18)-(0.60+/-0.14)z}, and L*~(1+z)^{(2.88+/-0.82)-(0.84+/-0.34)z}, respectively, with a turnover in number and luminosity densities …
We construct the average radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of highly star-forming galaxies (HSFGs) up to z~4. Infrared and radio luminosities are bound by a tight correlation that is defined by the so-called q parameter. This infrared-radio correlation provides the basis for the use of radio luminosity as a star-formation tracer. Recent stacking and survival analysis studies find q to be decreasing with increasing redshift. It was pointed out that a possible cause of the redshift trend could be the computation of rest-frame radio luminosity via a single power-law assumption of the star-…
As part of an on-going study of radio transients in Epoch 1 (2017-2019) of the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS), we have discovered a sample of 0.2<z<3.2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected in the optical/infrared that have recently brightened dramatically in the radio. These sources would have previously been classified as radio-quiet based on upper limits from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST; 1993-2011) survey; however, they are now consistent with radio-loud quasars. We present a quasi-simultaneous, multi-band (1-18 GHz) VLA follow-up campaign of our samp…
We provide a coherent, uniform measurement of the evolution of the logarithmic star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass ($M_*$) relation, called the main sequence of star-forming galaxies (MS), for galaxies out to $z\sim5$. We measure the MS using mean stacks of 3 GHz radio continuum images to derive average SFRs for $\sim$200,000 mass-selected galaxies at $z>0.3$ in the COSMOS field. We describe the MS relation adopting a new model that incorporates a linear relation at low stellar mass (log($M_*$/M$_\odot$)$<$10) and a flattening at high stellar mass that becomes more prominent at low redshi…
We present a weak lensing analysis of the 3 GHz VLA radio survey of the COSMOS field, which we correlate with overlapping HST-ACS optical observations using both intrinsic galaxy shape and cosmic shear correlation statistics. After cross-matching sources between the two catalogues, we measure the correlations of galaxy position angles and find a Pearson correlation coefficient of $0.14 \pm 0.03$. This is a marked improvement from previous studies which found very weak, or non-existent correlations, and gives insight into the emission processes of radio and optical galaxies. We also extract pow…
High-resolution 21-cm HI deep fields provide spatially and kinematically resolved neutral gas maps at different redshifts, which are key to understanding galaxy evolution across cosmic time and testing predictions of cosmological simulations. Here we present results from a pilot for the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) done with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We take advantage of the newly expanded capabilities of the telescope to probe the redshift interval 0<z<0.193 in one observation. We observe the COSMOS field for 50 hours, which contains 413 galaxies with optical…

(Abridged) Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is an ongoing multi-wavelength observational programme designed to return a large, well-selected sample of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We have identified $\sim$2000 MYSO candidates located throughout the Galaxy by comparing the colours of MSX and 2MASS point sources to those of known MYSOs. Aims: To identify the populations of UCHII regions and PNe within the sample and examine their Galactic distribution. Method: We have conducted high resolution radio continuum observations at 6 cm towards 659 MYSO candidates in the northern hemi…
To investigate the growth history of galaxies, we measure the rest-frame radio, ultraviolet (UV), and optical sizes of 98 radio-selected, star-forming galaxies (SFGs) distributed over $0.3 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ and median stellar mass of $\log(M_\star/ \rm M_\odot)\approx10.4$. We compare the size of galaxy stellar disks, traced by rest-frame optical emission, relative to the overall extent of star formation activity that is traced by radio continuum emission. Galaxies in our sample are identified in three Hubble Frontier Fields: MACSJ0416.1$-$2403, MACSJ0717.5+3745, and MACSJ1149.5+2223. Rad…
Utilizing a BzK-selected technique, we obtain 14550 star-forming galaxies (sBzKs) and 1763 passive galaxies (pBzKs) at z~2 from the K-selected (K<22.5) catalog in the COSMOS/UltraVISTA field. The differential number counts of sBzKs and pBzKs are consistent with the results from the literature. Compared to the observed results, semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution provide too few (many) galaxies at high (low)-mass end. Moreover, we find that the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass of sBzKs follow the relation of main sequence. Based on the HST/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3)…
The morphological study is crucial to investigate the connections between active galactic nuclei (AGN) activities and the evolution of galaxies. Substantial studies have found that radiative-mode AGNs primarily reside in disk galaxies, questioning the merger-driven mechanism of AGN activities. In this study, through S{é}rsic profile fitting and non-parametric morphological parameter measurements, we investigated the morphology of host galaxies of 485 optical variability-selected low luminosity AGNs at $z\lesssim4.26$ in the COSMOS field. We analyzed high-resolution images of the Hubble Space T…
We measure the cosmic star formation history out to z = 1.3 using a sample of 918 radio-selected star forming galaxies within the 2 square degree COSMOS field. To increase our sample size, we combine 1.4 GHz flux densities from the VLA-COSMOS catalogue with flux densities measured from the VLA-COSMOS radio continuum image at the positions of I < 26.5 galaxies, enabling us to detect 1.4 GHz sources as faint as 40 uJy. We find radio measurements of the cosmic star formation history are highly dependent on sample completeness and models used to extrapolate the faint end of the radio luminosity fu…
We have used FMOS on Subaru to obtain near-infrared spectroscopy of 123 far-infrared selected galaxies in COSMOS and obtain the key rest-frame optical emission lines. This is the largest sample of infrared galaxies with near-infrared spectroscopy at these redshifts. The far-infrared selection results in a sample of galaxies that are massive systems that span a range of metallicities in comparison with previous optically selected surveys, and thus has a higher AGN fraction and better samples the AGN branch. We establish the presence of AGN and starbursts in this sample of (U)LIRGs selected as H…
Deep radio surveys of extragalactic legacy fields trace a large range of spatial and brightness temperature sensitivity scales, and therefore have differing biases to radio-emitting physical components within galaxies. This is particularly true of radio surveys performed at less than 1 arcsec angular resolutions, and so robust comparisons are necessary to better understand the biases present in each survey. We present a multi-resolution and multi-wavelength analysis of the sources detected in a new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) survey of the CANDELS GOODS-North field. For the 24 VLBA-selecte…
We present $\simeq$0$.\!\!^{\prime\prime}4$-resolution extinction-independent distributions of star formation and dust in 11 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z = 1.3-3.0$. These galaxies are selected from sensitive, blank-field surveys of the $2' \times 2'$ Hubble Ultra-Deep Field at $λ= 5$ cm and 1.3 mm using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). They have star-formation rates (SFRs), stellar masses, and dust properties representative of massive main-sequence SFGs at $z \sim 2$. Morphological classification performed on spatially-re…
By exploiting the VLA-COSMOS and the Herschel-PEP surveys, we investigate the Far Infrared (FIR) properties of radio-selected AGN. To this purpose, from VLA-COSMOS we considered the 1537, F[1.4 GHz]>0.06 mJy sources with a reliable redshift estimate, and sub-divided them into star-forming galaxies and AGN solely on the basis of their radio luminosity. The AGN sample is complete with respect to radio selection at all z<~3.5. 832 radio sources have a counterpart in the PEP catalogue. 175 are AGN. Their redshift distribution closely resembles that of the total radio-selected AGN population, and e…
Periodic quasars have been suggested as candidates for hosting binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs), although alternative scenarios remain possible to explain the optical light curve periodicity. To test the alternative hypothesis of precessing radio jet, we present deep 6 GHz radio imaging conducted with NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its C configuration for the three candidate periodic quasars, DES J024703.24$-$010032.0, DES J024944.66$-$000036.8, and DES J025214.67$-$002813.7. Our targets were selected based on their optical variability using 20-yr long multi-color light …
We present deep 1.4GHz Very Large Array (VLA) radio continuum observations of two ~half square degree fields in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The two fields, "Coma 1" and "Coma 3," correspond to the cluster core and southwest infall region and were selected on account of abundant pre-existing multiwavelength data. In their most sensitive regions the radio data reach 22 uJy rms per 4.4" beam, sufficient to detect (at 5-sigma) Coma member galaxies with log(L) = 20.11 W/Hz. The full catalog of radio detections is presented herein and consists of 1030 sources detected at >=5 sigma, 628 of which ar…

We investigate the correlations in galaxy shapes between optical and radio wavelengths using archival observations of the COSMOS field. Cross-correlation studies between different wavebands will become increasingly important for precision cosmology as future large surveys may be dominated by systematic rather than statistical errors. In the case of weak lensing, galaxy shapes must be measured to extraordinary accuracy (shear systematics of $< 0.01\%$) in order to achieve good constraints on dark energy parameters. By using shape information from overlapping surveys in optical and radio bands, …
In this work, a nearby luminous AGN sample is selected from HST, where only sources with both X-ray emission observed by \textit{Chandra/XMM-Newton} and radio flux detected by VLA/VLBA/VLBI/MERLIN are adopted to keep high precision. We get a sample of 30 luminous AGNs finally, which consist of 11 RLAGN and 19 RQAGN. It is found that the relationship between $R_{\rm {UV}}$ and $α_{\rm {ox}}$, which was firstly reported by Li & Xie (2017) in LLAGN, and other relationships are all absent in RLAGN, probably due to the complex physical process therein. Our results indicate that the X-ray emission f…
We analyze morphologies of the host galaxies of 35 X-ray selected active galactic nucleus (AGNs) at $z\sim2$ in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field using Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 imaging taken from the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We build a control sample of 350 galaxies in total, by selecting ten non-active galaxies drawn from the same field with the similar stellar mass and redshift for each AGN host. By performing two dimensional fitting with GALFIT on the surface brightness profile, we find that the distribution of S$è$rsic index (n) …
