We introduce the concept of a Floquet gauge pump whereby a dynamically engineered Floquet Hamiltonian is employed to reveal the inherent degeneracy of the ground state in interacting systems. We demonstrate this concept in a one-dimensional XY model with periodically driven couplings and transverse field. In the high-frequency limit, we obtain the Floquet Hamiltonian consisting of the static XY and dynamically generated Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI) terms. The dynamically generated magnetization current depends on the phases of complex coupling terms, with the XY interaction as the real and DMI as the imaginary part. As these phases are cycled, the current reveals the ground-state degeneracies that distinguish the ordered and disordered phases. We discuss experimental requirements needed to realize the Floquet gauge pump in a synthetic quantum spin system of interacting trapped ions.
We explore adiabatic pumping in the presence of periodic drive, finding a new phase in which the topologically quantized pumped quantity is energy rather than charge. The topological invariant is given by the winding number of the micromotion with respect to time within each cycle, momentum, and adiabatic tuning parameter. We show numerically that this pump is highly robust against both disorder and interactions, breaking down at large values of either in a manner identical to the Thouless charge pump. Finally, we suggest experimental protocols for measuring this phenomenon.
Periodically driven quantum systems provide a novel and versatile platform for realizing topological phenomena. Among these are analogs of topological insulators and superconductors, attainable in static systems; however, some of these phenomena are unique to the periodically driven case. Here, we show that disordered, periodically driven systems admit an "anomalous" two dimensional phase, whose quasi-energy spectrum consists of chiral edge modes that coexist with a fully localized bulk - an impossibility for static Hamiltonians. This unique situation serves as the basis for a new topologicall…
We investigate a mechanism to transiently stabilize topological phenomena in long-lived quasi-steady states of isolated quantum many-body systems driven at low frequencies. We obtain an analytical bound for the lifetime of the quasi-steady states which is exponentially large in the inverse driving frequency. Within this lifetime, the quasi-steady state is characterized by maximum entropy subject to the constraint of fixed number of particles in the system's Floquet-Bloch bands. In such a state, all the non-universal properties of these bands are washed out, hence only the topological propertie…
We construct an interacting integrable Floquet model featuring quasiparticle excitations with topologically nontrivial chiral dispersion. This model is a fully quantum generalization of an integrable classical cellular automaton. We write down and solve the Bethe equations for the generalized quantum model, and show that these take on a particularly simple form that allows for an exact solution: essentially, the quasiparticles behave like interacting hard rods. The generalized thermodynamics and hydrodynamics of this model follow directly. Although the model is interacting, its unusually simpl…
We propose the implementation of a quantum heat pump with ultracold atoms. It is based on two periodically driven coherently coupled quantum dots using ultracold atoms. Each dot possesses two relevant quantum states and is coupled to a fermionic reservoir. The working principle is based on energy-selective driving-induced resonant tunneling processes, where a particle that tunnels from one dot to the other either absorbs or emits the energy quantum $\hbarω$ associated with the driving frequency, depending on its energy. We characterize the device using Floquet theory and compare simple analyti…
We show how dispersionless channels exhibiting perfect spin-momentum locking can arise in a 1D lattice model. While such spectra are forbidden by fermion doubling in static 1D systems, here we demonstrate their appearance in the stroboscopic dynamics of a periodically driven system. Remarkably, this phenomenon does not rely on any adiabatic assumptions, in contrast to the well known Thouless pump and related models of adiabatic spin pumps. The proposed setup is shown to be experimentally feasible with state of the art techniques used to control ultracold alkaline earth atoms in optical lattice…
We analyze strong correlation effects and topological properties of interacting fermions with a Falicov-Kimball type interaction in circularly shaken hexagonal optical lattices, which can be effectively described by the Haldane-Falicov-Kimball model, using the real-space Floquet dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The Haldane model, a paradigmatic model of the Chern insulator, is experimentally relevant, because it has been realized using circularly shaken hexagonal optical lattices. We show that in the presence of staggering a charge density wave emerges, which is affected by interactions and…
We show that time-reflection symmetry in periodically driven (Floquet) quantum systems enables an inherently nonequilibrium phenomenon structurally similar to quantum-mechanical sypersymmetry. In particular, we find Floquet analogues of the Witten index that place lower bounds on the degeneracies of states with quasienergies $0$ and $π$. Moreover, we show that in some cases time reflection symmetry can also interchange fermions and bosons, leading to fermion/boson pairs with opposite quasienergy. We provide a simple class of disordered, interacting, and ergodic Floquet models with an exponenti…
Time-periodic (Floquet) drive can give rise to novel symmetry breaking and topological phases of matter. Recently, we showed that a quintessential Floquet topological phase known as the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator is stable to noise on the timing of its Floquet drive. Here, we perturb the anomalous Floquet-Anderson insulator at a single incommensurate frequency, resulting in a quasiperiodic 2-tone drive. Our numerics indicate that a robust topological phase survives at weak noise with topological pumping that is more stable than the case of white noise. Within the topological phase, w…
Time-periodic (Floquet) drive is a powerful method to engineer quantum phases of matter, including fundamentally non-equilibrium states that are impossible in static Hamiltonian systems. One characteristic example is the anomalous Floquet insulator, which exhibits topologically quantized chiral edge states similar to a Chern insulator, yet is amenable to bulk localization. We study the response of this topological system to time-dependent noise, which breaks the topologically protecting Floquet symmetry. Surprisingly, we find that the quantized response, given by partially filling the fermioni…
Time periodic driving serves not only as a convenient way to engineer effective Hamiltonians, but also as a means to produce intrinsically dynamical phases that do not exist in the static limit. A recent example of the latter are 2D chiral Floquet (CF) phases exhibiting anomalous edge dynamics that pump discrete packets of quantum information along one direction. In non-fractionalized systems with only bosonic excitations, this pumping is quantified by a dynamical topological index that is a rational number -- highlighting its difference from the integer valued invariant underlying equilibrium…
Diabolical points (degeneracies) can naturally occur in spectra of two-dimensional quantum systems and classical wave resonators due to simple symmetries. Geometric Berry phase is associated with these spectral degeneracies. Here, we demonstrate a diabolical point and the corresponding Berry phase in the spectrum of hybrid light-matter quasiparticles -- exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. It is well known that sufficiently strong optical pumping can drive exciton-polaritons to quantum degeneracy, whereby they form a macroscopically populated quantum coherent state similar to a B…
We investigate the topological properties of a resonantly shaken one-dimensional optical lattice system, where the lattice position is periodically driven with two harmonic frequencies to generate one- and two-photon couplings between the two lowest orbitals. In a two-band approximation, we numerically show that degenerate edge states appear under a certain driving condition and that the corresponding topological phase is protected by the chiral symmetry of the periodically driven system. The system's micromotion is characterized with oscillating Zak phases and we find that the Zak phases are …
We construct and classify chiral topological phases in driven (Floquet) systems of strongly interacting bosons, with finite-dimensional site Hilbert spaces, in two spatial dimensions. The construction proceeds by introducing exactly soluble models with chiral edges, which in the presence of many-body localization (MBL) in the bulk are argued to lead to stable chiral phases. These chiral phases do not require any symmetry, and in fact owe their existence to the absence of energy conservation in driven systems. Surprisingly, we show that they are classified by a quantized many-body index, which …
We study the energy and entanglement dynamics of $(1+1)$D conformal field theories (CFTs) under a Floquet drive with the sine-square deformed (SSD) Hamiltonian. Previous work has shown this model supports both a non-heating and a heating phase. Here we analytically establish several robust and `super-universal' features of the heating phase which rely on conformal invariance but not on the details of the CFT involved. First, we show the energy density is concentrated in two peaks in real space, a chiral and anti-chiral peak, which leads to an exponential growth in the total energy. The peak lo…
