Soft-drop grooming of hadron-collision final states has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of non-perturbative corrections, and in particular the underlying-event contribution. This eventually will enable a more direct comparison of accurate perturbative predictions with experimental measurements. In this study we consider soft-drop groomed dijet event shapes. We derive general results needed to perform the resummation of suitable event-shape variables to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy matched to exact next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD matrix elements. We compile predictions for the transverse-thrust shape accurate to NLO+NLL' using the implementation of the CAESAR formalism in the Sherpa event generator framework. We complement this by state-of-the-art parton- and hadron-level predictions based on NLO QCD matrix elements matched with parton showers. We explore the potential to mitigate non-perturbative corrections for particle-level and track-based measurements of transverse thrust by considering a wide range of soft-drop parameters. We find that soft-drop grooming indeed is very efficient in removing the underlying event. This motivates future experimental measurements to be compared to precise QCD predictions and employed to constrain non-perturbative models in Monte-Carlo simulations.
We evaluate the phenomenological applicability of the dynamical grooming technique, introduced in [1], to boosted W and top tagging at LHC conditions. An extension of our method intended for multi-prong decays with an internal mass scale, such as the top quark decay, is presented. First, we tackle the reconstruction of the mass distribution of W and top jets quantifying the smearing due to pileup. When compared to state-of-the-art grooming algorithms like SoftDrop and its recursive version, dynamical grooming shows an enhanced resilience to background fluctuations. In addition, we asses the di…
We propose a kinematic method based on a factorization formula for precisely measuring the top quark mass $m_t$ in $pp$ collisions using boosted top jets with light soft drop grooming. By using light grooming, which is an order of magnitude less aggressive than typical grooming, we retain a universal description of the top mass scheme and decay effects, while still effectively removing soft contamination from the top jet. We give field theory results for the hadronization corrections for jets induced by a heavy top quark, showing they are described by a universal hadronic parameter that also a…
We investigate the medium modifications of momentum splitting fraction and groomed jet radius with both dynamical grooming and soft drop algorithms in heavy-ion collisions. In the calculation, the partonic spectrum of initial hard scattering in p+p collisions is provided by the event generator PYTHIA 8, and the energy loss of fast parton traversing in a hot/dense QCD medium is simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We predict the normalized distributions of the groomed jet radius $θ_g$ and momentum splitting fraction $z_g$ with the dynamical grooming algorithm in Pb+Pb coll…
We introduce a new jet substructure technique called Recursive Soft Drop, which generalizes the Soft Drop algorithm to have multiple grooming layers. Like the original Soft Drop method, this new recursive variant traverses a jet clustering tree to remove soft wide-angle contamination. By enforcing the Soft Drop condition N times, Recursive Soft Drop improves the jet mass resolution for boosted hadronic objects like W bosons, top quarks, and Higgs bosons. We further show that this improvement in mass resolution persists when including the effects of pileup, up to large pileup multiplicities. In…
In this work, we analyse the all-orders resummation structure of the momentum sharing fraction, $z_g$, opening angle, $θ_g$, and relative transverse momentum, $k_{t,g}$, of the splitting tagged by the dynamical grooming procedure in hadronic collisions. We demonstrate that their resummation does non-exponentiate and it is free of clustering logarithms. Then, we analytically compute the probability distributions of ($z_g$, $θ_g$, $k_{t,g}$) up to next-to next-to-double logarithm accuracy (N2DL) in the narrow jet limit, including a matching to leading order in $α_s$. On the phenomenological side…
We study the jet energy drop, which is the relative difference between the groomed and ungroomed jet energy or transverse momentum. It is one of the fundamental quantities that characterizes the impact of grooming on jets produced in high energy collisions. We consider three different grooming algorithms i) soft drop, ii) iterated soft drop, and iii) trimming. We carry out the resummation of large logarithms of the jet energy drop, the jet radius as well as relevant grooming parameters at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL$'$) accuracy. In addition, we account for non-global and clustering logar…
Jet grooming has emerged as a necessary and vital tool for mitigating contamination radiation in jets. The additional restrictions on emissions imposed by the groomer can result in non-smooth behavior of resulting fixed-order distributions of observables measured on groomed jets. As a concrete example, we study the cusp in the hemisphere mass distribution of $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons events groomed with soft drop. We identify the leading emissions that contribute in the region about the cusp and formulate an all-orders factorization theorem that describes how the cusp is resolved through arbitrary s…
The jet Trimming procedure has been demonstrated to greatly improve event reconstruction in hadron collisions, by mitigating contamination due initial state radiation, multiple interactions, and event pileup. Meanwhile, Qjets -- a nondeterministic approach to tree-based jet substructure has been shown to be a powerful technique in decreasing random statistical fluctuations, yielding significant effective luminosity improvements. This manifests through an improvement in the significance $S/δB$, relative to conventional methods. Qjets also provide novel observables in many cases, like mass-volat…
We introduce a novel grooming procedure, which is an extension of the modified MassDrop tagging algorithm, tailored to the needs of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The new algorithm, which grooms the event as a whole, takes advantage of the natural separation of current and target fragmentation in the Breit frame, in order to eliminate radiation in the beam and central rapidity regions. We study the groomed invariant mass in DIS and within soft-collinear effective theory we construct a factorization theorem for the cross-section in the back-to-back limit. In this limit we show that, up to a n…
We present a first-principle computation of the mass distribution of jets which have undergone the grooming procedure known as Soft Drop. This calculation includes the resummation of the large logarithms of the jet mass over its transverse momentum, up to next-to-logarithmic accuracy, matched to exact fixed-order results at next-to-leading order. We also include non-perturbative corrections obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations and discuss analytic expressions for hadronisation and Underlying Event effects.
We present predictions for soft-drop event shapes of hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbation theory obtained using the CoLoRFulNNLO subtraction method. We study the impact of the soft drop on the convergence of the perturbative expansion for the distributions of three event shape variables, the soft-drop thrust, the hemisphere jet and narrow jet invariant masses. We find that grooming generally improves perturbative convergence for these event shapes. This better perturbative stability, in conjunction with a reduced sens…
We extend our framework for the automated calculation of dijet soft functions to observables that do not obey the non-Abelian exponentiation theorem, like jet-veto or grooming soft functions that are sensitive to clustering effects of the jet algorithm. Although the matrix element for uncorrelated double emissions has a simpler structure than the one for correlated emissions, we argue that its singularity structure poses more stringent constraints on the required phase-space parametrisation. Our algorithm applies to both SCET-1 and SCET-2 soft functions and it is implemented in the novel progr…
Observables which distinguish boosted topologies from QCD jets are playing an increasingly important role at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These observables are often used in conjunction with jet grooming algorithms, which reduce contamination from both theoretical and experimental sources. In this paper we derive factorization formulae for groomed multi-prong substructure observables, focusing in particular on the groomed $D_2$ observable, which is used to identify boosted hadronic decays of electroweak bosons at the LHC. Our factorization formulae allow systematically improvable calculati…
Grooming techniques, such as soft drop, play a central role in reducing sensitivity of jets to e.g. underlying event and hadronization at current collider experiments. The momentum sharing fraction $z_g$, of the two branches in a jet that pass the soft drop condition, is one of the most important observables characterizing a collinear splitting inside the jet, and directly probes the QCD splitting functions. In this work, we present a factorization framework that enables a systematic calculation of the corresponding cross section beyond leading-logarithmic (LL) accuracy, showing that this meas…
Soft drop has been shown to reduce hadronisation effects at $e^+e^-$ colliders for the thrust event shape. In this context, we perform fits of the strong coupling constant for the soft-drop thrust distribution at NLO+NLL accuracy to pseudo data generated by the \textsf{Sherpa}~event generator. In particular, we focus on the impact of hadronisation corrections, which we estimate both with an analytical model and a Monte-Carlo based one, on the fitted value of $α_s(m_Z)$. We find that grooming can reduce the size of the shift in the fitted value of $α_s$ due to hadronisation. In addition, we als…
We present a new technique for distinguishing the hadronic decays of boosted heavy particles from QCD backgrounds based on wavelet transforms. As an initial exploration, we illustrate the technique in the particular case of hadronic $W$ boson decays, comparing it to the ``mass drop'' cut currently used by the LHC experiments. We apply wavelet cuts, which make use of complementary information, and in combination with the mass drop cut results in an improvement of $\sim$7% in discovery reach of hadronic $W$ boson final states over a wide range of transverse momenta.

Jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables where a continuous parameter is introduced in order to interpolate between different classic observables such as the jet mass and jet broadening. We consider jet angularities measured on an inclusive jet sample at the LHC where the soft drop grooming procedure is applied in order to remove soft contaminations from the jets. The soft drop algorithm allows for a precise comparison between theory and data and could be used to extract the QCD strong coupling constant $α_s$ from jet substructure data in the future. We develop a framework …
We compute resummed and matched predictions for jet angularities in hadronic dijet and Z+jet events with and without grooming the candidate jets using the SoftDrop technique. Our theoretical predictions also account for non-perturbative corrections from the underlying event and hadronisation through parton-to-hadron level transfer matrices extracted from dedicated Monte Carlo simulations with SHERPA. Thanks to this approach we can account for non-perturbative migration effects in both the angularities and the jet transverse momentum. We compare our predictions against recent measurements from …
We explore a set of jet substructure observables that use grooming techniques such as the Soft Drop procedure by performing simulations with the hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet quenching. The results obtained for the observables presented in this proceedings, namely the number of Soft Drop splittings, or $n_{\rm SD}$, and the sharing momentum distribution $z_g$ for different angular cuts between the two main branches in a jet, can be easily understood as arising from the fact that among all the jets with a given jet $p_T$, those jets which are wider in opening angle, meaning that the…
Jet grooming algorithms are widely used in experimental analyses at hadron colliders to remove contaminating radiation from within jets. While the algorithms perform a great service to the experiments, their intricate algorithmic structure and multiple parameters has frustrated precision theoretic understanding. In this paper, we demonstrate that one particular groomer called soft drop actually makes precision jet substructure easier. In particular, we derive a factorization formula for a large class of soft drop jet substructure observables, including jet mass. The essential observation that …
We present compact integral representations for the calculation of two-loop anomalous dimensions for a generic class of soft functions that are defined in terms of two light-like Wilson lines. Our results are relevant for the resummation of Sudakov logarithms for e+ e- event-shape variables and inclusive hadron-collider observables at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET). Our formalism applies to both SCET-1 and SCET-2 soft functions and we clarify the relation between the respective soft anomalous dimension and the collinear anomaly expone…
The rare multi-body decays B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll are both important as backgrounds to precision analyses in the benchmark modes B->K* ll and B_s->phi ll as well as sensitive probes of flavor physics in and beyond the standard model. We work out non-resonant contributions to B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll amplitudes, where l=e,mu, at low hadronic recoil in a model-independent way. Using the operator product expansion in 1/m_b, we present expressions for the full angular distribution. The latter allows to probe new combinations of |Delta B|=|Delta S|=1 couplings and gives access to strong phase…
One of the key tasks of any particle collider is measurement. In practice, this is often done by fitting data to a simulation, which depends on many parameters. Sometimes, when the effects of varying different parameters are highly correlated, a large ensemble of data may be needed to resolve parameter-space degeneracies. An important example is measuring the top-quark mass, where other physical and unphysical parameters in the simulation must be marginalized over when fitting the top-quark mass parameter. We compare three different methodologies for top-quark mass measurement: a classical his…
