We prove that the diametral diameter two properties are inherited by $F$-ideals (e.g., $M$-ideals). On the other hand, these properties are lifted from an $M$-ideal to the superspace under strong geometric assumptions. We also show that all of the diametral diameter two properties are stable under the formation of corresponding Köthe-Bochner spaces (e.g., $L_p$-Bochner spaces). Finally, we investigate when the projective tensor product of two Banach spaces has some diametral diameter two property.
We prove that the diametral strong diameter 2 property of a Banach space (meaning that, in convex combinations of relatively weakly open subsets of its unit ball, every point has an "almost diametral" point) is stable under 1-sums, i.e., the direct sum of two spaces with the diametral strong diameter 2 property equipped with the 1-norm has again this property.
The aim of this note is to provide several variants of the diameter two properties for Banach spaces. We study such properties looking for the abundance of diametral points, which holds in the setting of Banach spaces with the Daugavet property, for example, and we intro- duce the diametral diameter two properties in Banach spaces, showing for these new properties stability results, inheritance to subspaces and characterizations in terms of finite rank projections.
We demonstrate the result stated in the title, thus answering an open question asked by Julio Becerra Guerrero, Ginés López-Pérez and Abraham Rueda Zoca in J. Conv. Anal. \textbf{25}, no. 3 (2018).
We introduce extensions of $Δ$-points and Daugavet points in which slices are replaced by relative weakly open subsets (super $Δ$-points and super Daugavet points) or by convex combinations of slices (ccs $Δ$-points and ccs Daugavet points). We first give a general overview on these new concepts and provide some isometric consequences on the spaces. As examples: if a Banach space contains a super $Δ$-point, then it does not admit an unconditional FDD with suppression constant smaller than two; if a real Banach space contains a ccs $Δ$-point, then it does not admit a one-unconditional basis; if…
We prove that, if Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ are $δ$-average rough, then their direct sum with respect to an absolute norm $N$ is $δ/N(1,1)$-average rough. In particular, for octahedral $X$ and $Y$ and for $p$ in $(1,\infty)$ the space $X\oplus_p Y$ is $2^{1-1/p}$-average rough, which is in general optimal. Another consequence is that for any $δ$ in $(1,2]$ there is a Banach space which is exactly $δ$-average rough. We give a complete characterization when an absolute sum of two Banach spaces is octahedral or has the strong diameter 2 property. However, among all of the absolute sums, the diame…
We introduce a vector-valued version of a uniform algebra, called the vector-valued function space over a uniform algebra. The diameter two properties of the vector-valued function space over a uniform algebra on an infinite compact Hausdorff space are investigated. Every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of the unit ball of a vector-valued function space $A(K, (X, τ))$ over an infinite dimensional uniform algebra has the diameter two, where $τ$ is a locally convex Hausdorff topology on a Banach space $X$ compatible to a dual pair. Under the assumption on $X$ being uniformly convex with n…
The geometric notion of huskability initiated and developed in [B3], [BR] ,[EW], [GM] was subsequently extensively studied in the context of dentability and Radon Nikodym Property in [GGMS]. In this work, we introduce a new geometric property of Banach space, the Ball Huskable Property ($BHP$), namely, the unit ball has relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter. We compare this property to two related geometric properties, $BSCSP$ namely, the unit ball has convex combination of slices of arbitrarily small diameter and $BDP$ namely, the closed unit ball has slices of arbitrar…
In this work we study three different versions of small diameter properties of the unit ball in a Banach space and its dual. The related concepts for all closed bounded convex sets of a Banach space was initiated and developed in \cite{B3}, \cite{BR} ,\cite{EW}, \cite{GM} was extensively studied in the context of dentability, huskability, Radon Nikodym Property and Krein Milman Property in \cite{GGMS}. We introduce the the Ball Huskable Property ($BHP$), namely, the unit ball has relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter. We compare this property to two related properties, $…
It is known that a Banach space has the strong diameter 2 property (i.e. every convex combination of slices of the unit ball has diameter 2) if and only if the norm on its dual space is octahedral (a notion introduced by Godefroy and Maurey). We introduce two more versions of octahedrality, which turn out to be dual properties to the diameter 2 property and its local version (i.e., respectively, every relatively weakly open subset and every slice of the unit ball has diameter 2). We study stability properties of different types of octahedrality, which, by duality, provide easier proofs of many…
We study transfinite analogues of the symmetric strong diameter two property. We investigate the stability of these properties under $c_0$, $\ell_\infty$ sums and under projective tensor products. Moreover, we characterize Banach spaces of the form $C_0(X)$, where $X$ is a T$_4$ locally compact space, which posses these transfinite properties via cardinal functions over $X$. As an application, we are able to produce a variety of examples of Banach spaces which enjoy or fail these properties.
We extend the (attaining of) strong diameter two property to infinite cardinals. In particular, a Banach space has the 1-norming attaining strong diameter two property with respect to $ω$ (1-ASD2P$_ω$ for short) if every convex series of slices of the unit ball intersects the unit sphere. We characterize $C(K)$ spaces and $L_1(μ)$ spaces having the 1-ASD2P$_ω$. We establish dual implications between the 1-ASD2P$_ω$, $ω$-octahedral norms and Banach spaces failing the $(-1)$-ball-covering property. The stability of these new properties under direct sums and tensor products is also investigated.
We prove an extension of McDiarmid's inequality for metric spaces with unbounded diameter. To this end, we introduce the notion of the {\em subgaussian diameter}, which is a distribution-dependent refinement of the metric diameter. Our technique provides an alternative approach to that of Kutin and Niyogi's method of weakly difference-bounded functions, and yields nontrivial, dimension-free results in some interesting cases where the former does not. As an application, we give apparently the first generalization bound in the algorithmic stability setting that holds for unbounded loss functions…
For each positive integer $m$ and each real finite dimensional Banach space $X$, we set $β(X,m)$ to be the infimum of $δ\in (0,1]$ such that each set $A\subset X$ having diameter $1$ can be represented as the union of $m$ subsets of $A$ whose diameters are at most $δ$. Elementary properties of $β(X,m)$, including its stability with respect to $X$ in the sense of Banach-Mazur metric, are presented. Two methods for estimating $β(X,m)$ are introduced. The first one estimates $β(X,m)$ using the knowledge of $β(Y,m)$, where $Y$ is a Banach space sufficiently close to $X$. The second estimation uses…
