Current developments in temporal event or action localization usually target actions captured by a single camera. However, extensive events or actions in the wild may be captured as a sequence of shots by multiple cameras at different positions. In this paper, we propose a new and challenging task called multi-shot temporal event localization, and accordingly, collect a large scale dataset called MUlti-Shot EventS (MUSES). MUSES has 31,477 event instances for a total of 716 video hours. The core nature of MUSES is the frequent shot cuts, for an average of 19 shots per instance and 176 shots per video, which induces large intrainstance variations. Our comprehensive evaluations show that the state-of-the-art method in temporal action localization only achieves an mAP of 13.1% at IoU=0.5. As a minor contribution, we present a simple baseline approach for handling the intra-instance variations, which reports an mAP of 18.9% on MUSES and 56.9% on THUMOS14 at IoU=0.5. To facilitate research in this direction, we release the dataset and the project code at https://songbai.site/muses/ .

Zero-shot learning extends the conventional object classification to the unseen class recognition by introducing semantic representations of classes. Existing approaches predominantly focus on learning the proper mapping function for visual-semantic embedding, while neglecting the effect of learning discriminative visual features. In this paper, we study the significance of the discriminative region localization. We propose a semantic-guided multi-attention localization model, which automatically discovers the most discriminative parts of objects for zero-shot learning without any human annota…
Temporal action segmentation (TAS) aims to classify and locate actions in the long untrimmed action sequence. With the success of deep learning, many deep models for action segmentation have emerged. However, few-shot TAS is still a challenging problem. This study proposes an efficient framework for the few-shot skeleton-based TAS, including a data augmentation method and an improved model. The data augmentation approach based on motion interpolation is presented here to solve the problem of insufficient data, and can increase the number of samples significantly by synthesizing action sequence…

This paper targets the task of language-based video moment localization. The language-based setting of this task allows for an open set of target activities, resulting in a large variation of the temporal lengths of video moments. Most existing methods prefer to first sample sufficient candidate moments with various temporal lengths, and then match them with the given query to determine the target moment. However, candidate moments generated with a fixed temporal granularity may be suboptimal to handle the large variation in moment lengths. To this end, we propose a novel multi-stage Progressi…

Given an untrimmed video and a sentence description, temporal sentence localization aims to automatically determine the start and end points of the described sentence within the video. The problem is challenging as it needs the understanding of both video and sentence. Existing research predominantly employs a costly "scan and localize" framework, neglecting the global video context and the specific details within sentences which play as critical issues for this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel Attention Based Location Regression (ABLR) approach to solve the temporal sentence localiz…
This paper introduces the task of few-shot common action localization in time and space. Given a few trimmed support videos containing the same but unknown action, we strive for spatio-temporal localization of that action in a long untrimmed query video. We do not require any class labels, interval bounds, or bounding boxes. To address this challenging task, we introduce a novel few-shot transformer architecture with a dedicated encoder-decoder structure optimized for joint commonality learning and localization prediction, without the need for proposals. Experiments on our reorganizations of t…
We aim for zero-shot localization and classification of human actions in video. Where traditional approaches rely on global attribute or object classification scores for their zero-shot knowledge transfer, our main contribution is a spatial-aware object embedding. To arrive at spatial awareness, we build our embedding on top of freely available actor and object detectors. Relevance of objects is determined in a word embedding space and further enforced with estimated spatial preferences. Besides local object awareness, we also embed global object awareness into our embedding to maximize actor …

Supervised keypoint localization methods rely on large manually labeled image datasets, where objects can deform, articulate, or occlude. However, creating such large keypoint labels is time-consuming and costly, and is often error-prone due to inconsistent labeling. Thus, we desire an approach that can learn keypoint localization with fewer yet consistently annotated images. To this end, we present a novel formulation that learns to localize semantically consistent keypoint definitions, even for occluded regions, for varying object categories. We use a few user-labeled 2D images as input exam…
In this paper, we consider the problem of temporal action localization under low-shot (zero-shot & few-shot) scenario, with the goal of detecting and classifying the action instances from arbitrary categories within some untrimmed videos, even not seen at training time. We adopt a Transformer-based two-stage action localization architecture with class-agnostic action proposal, followed by open-vocabulary classification. We make the following contributions. First, to compensate image-text foundation models with temporal motions, we improve category-agnostic action proposal by explicitly alignin…

Few-shot learning often involves metric learning-based classifiers, which predict the image label by comparing the distance between the extracted feature vector and class representations. However, applying global pooling in the backend of the feature extractor may not produce an embedding that correctly focuses on the class object. In this work, we propose a novel framework that generates class representations by extracting features from class-relevant regions of the images. Given only a few exemplary images with image-level labels, our framework first localizes the class objects by spatially …
Visual (re)localization addresses the problem of estimating the 6-DoF (Degree of Freedom) camera pose of a query image captured in a known scene, which is a key building block of many computer vision and robotics applications. Recent advances in structure-based localization solve this problem by memorizing the mapping from image pixels to scene coordinates with neural networks to build 2D-3D correspondences for camera pose optimization. However, such memorization requires training by amounts of posed images in each scene, which is heavy and inefficient. On the contrary, few-shot images are usu…
Detection of video shot transition is a crucial pre-processing step in video analysis. Previous studies are restricted on detecting sudden content changes between frames through similarity measurement and multi-scale operations are widely utilized to deal with transitions of various lengths. However, localization of gradual transitions are still under-explored due to the high visual similarity between adjacent frames. Cut shot transitions are abrupt semantic breaks while gradual shot transitions contain low-level spatial-temporal patterns caused by video effects in addition to the gradual sema…
Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to discriminate images from unseen classes by exploiting relations to seen classes via their attribute-based descriptions. Since attributes are often related to specific parts of objects, many recent works focus on discovering discriminative regions. However, these methods usually require additional complex part detection modules or attention mechanisms. In this paper, 1) we show that common ZSL backbones (without explicit attention nor part detection) can implicitly localize attributes, yet this property is not exploited. 2) Exploiting it, we then propose SELAR, …

As an important upstream task for many medical applications, supervised landmark localization still requires non-negligible annotation costs to achieve desirable performance. Besides, due to cumbersome collection procedures, the limited size of medical landmark datasets impacts the effectiveness of large-scale self-supervised pre-training methods. To address these challenges, we propose a two-stage framework for one-shot medical landmark localization, which first infers landmarks by unsupervised registration from the labeled exemplar to unlabeled targets, and then utilizes these noisy pseudo l…
Aiming at recognizing and localizing the object of novel categories by a few reference samples, few-shot object detection (FSOD) is a quite challenging task. Previous works often depend on the fine-tuning process to transfer their model to the novel category and rarely consider the defect of fine-tuning, resulting in many application drawbacks. For example, these methods are far from satisfying in the episode-changeable scenarios due to excessive fine-tuning times, and their performance on low-quality (e.g., low-shot and class-incomplete) support sets degrades severely. To this end, this paper…
Video temporal action detection aims to temporally localize and recognize the action in untrimmed videos. Existing one-stage approaches mostly focus on unifying two subtasks, i.e., localization of action proposals and classification of each proposal through a fully shared backbone. However, such design of encapsulating all components of two subtasks in one single network might restrict the training by ignoring the specialized characteristic of each subtask. In this paper, we propose a novel Decoupled Single Shot temporal Action Detection (Decouple-SSAD) method to mitigate such problem by decou…

In the face of scarcity in detailed training annotations, the ability to perform object localization tasks in real-time with weak-supervision is very valuable. However, the computational cost of generating and evaluating region proposals is heavy. We adapt the concept of Class Activation Maps (CAM) into the very first weakly-supervised 'single-shot' detector that does not require the use of region proposals. To facilitate this, we propose a novel global pooling technique called Spatial Pyramid Averaged Max (SPAM) pooling for training this CAM-based network for object extent localisation with o…

Temporal action localization is an important task of computer vision. Though a variety of methods have been proposed, it still remains an open question how to predict the temporal boundaries of action segments precisely. Most works use segment-level classifiers to select video segments pre-determined by action proposal or dense sliding windows. However, in order to achieve more precise action boundaries, a temporal localization system should make dense predictions at a fine granularity. A newly proposed work exploits Convolutional-Deconvolutional-Convolutional (CDC) filters to upsample the pre…
This paper presents a general one-shot object localization algorithm called OneLoc. Current one-shot object localization or detection methods either rely on a slow exhaustive feature matching process or lack the ability to generalize to novel objects. In contrast, our proposed OneLoc algorithm efficiently finds the object center and bounding box size by a special voting scheme. To keep our method scale-invariant, only unit center offset directions and relative sizes are estimated. A novel dense equalized voting module is proposed to better locate small texture-less objects. Experiments show th…

Given an untrimmed video, temporal sentence localization (TSL) aims to localize a specific segment according to a given sentence query. Though respectable works have made decent achievements in this task, they severely rely on dense video frame annotations, which require a tremendous amount of human effort to collect. In this paper, we target another more practical and challenging setting: one-shot temporal sentence localization (one-shot TSL), which learns to retrieve the query information among the entire video with only one annotated frame. Particularly, we propose an effective and novel tr…
In this paper we propose a novel Temporal Attentive Relation Network (TARN) for the problems of few-shot and zero-shot action recognition. At the heart of our network is a meta-learning approach that learns to compare representations of variable temporal length, that is, either two videos of different length (in the case of few-shot action recognition) or a video and a semantic representation such as word vector (in the case of zero-shot action recognition). By contrast to other works in few-shot and zero-shot action recognition, we a) utilise attention mechanisms so as to perform temporal ali…

This paper addresses spatio-temporal localization of human actions in video. In order to localize actions in time, we propose a recurrent localization network (RecLNet) designed to model the temporal structure of actions on the level of person tracks. Our model is trained to simultaneously recognize and localize action classes in time and is based on two layer gated recurrent units (GRU) applied separately to two streams, i.e. appearance and optical flow streams. When used together with state-of-the-art person detection and tracking, our model is shown to improve substantially spatio-temporal …

Temporal action localization (TAL) is an important and challenging problem in video understanding. However, most existing TAL benchmarks are built upon the coarse granularity of action classes, which exhibits two major limitations in this task. First, coarse-level actions can make the localization models overfit in high-level context information, and ignore the atomic action details in the video. Second, the coarse action classes often lead to the ambiguous annotations of temporal boundaries, which are inappropriate for temporal action localization. To tackle these problems, we develop a novel…
Few-shot action recognition has attracted increasing attention due to the difficulty in acquiring the properly labelled training samples. Current works have shown that preserving spatial information and comparing video descriptors are crucial for few-shot action recognition. However, the importance of preserving temporal information is not well discussed. In this paper, we propose a Contents and Length-based Temporal Attention (CLTA) model, which learns customized temporal attention for the individual video to tackle the few-shot action recognition problem. CLTA utilizes the Gaussian likelihoo…
We propose an effective approach for spatio-temporal action localization in realistic videos. The approach first detects proposals at the frame-level and scores them with a combination of static and motion CNN features. It then tracks high-scoring proposals throughout the video using a tracking-by-detection approach. Our tracker relies simultaneously on instance-level and class-level detectors. The tracks are scored using a spatio-temporal motion histogram, a descriptor at the track level, in combination with the CNN features. Finally, we perform temporal localization of the action using a sli…

Only a small number of studies address the challenge of few-shot learning on spatio-temporal patterns such as videos. In this paper, we present the Temporal Aware Embedding Network (TAEN) for few-shot action recognition, that learns to represent actions, in a metric space as a trajectory, conveying both short term semantics and longer term connectivity between action pa…

Many video analysis tasks require temporal localization thus detection of content changes. However, most existing models developed for these tasks are pre-trained on general video action classification tasks. This is because large scale annotation of temporal boundaries in untrimmed videos is expensive. Therefore no suitable datasets exist for temporal boundary-sensitive pre-training. In this paper for the first time, we investigate model pre-training for temporal localization by introducing a novel boundary-sensitive pretext (BSP) task. Instead of relying on costly manual annotations of tempo…

In the present study, we developed a novel method, referred to as Gemini Network, for effective modeling of temporal structures and achieving high-performance temporal action localization. The significant improvements afforded by the proposed method are attributable to three major factors. First, the developed network utilizes two subnets for effective modeling of temporal structures. The need for efficiently finding the video content a user wants is increasing because of the erupting of user-generated videos on the Web. Existing keyword-based or content-based video retrieval methods usually determine what occurs in a video but not when and where. In this paper, we make an answer to the question of when and where by formulating a new task, namely spatio-temporal video re-localization. Specifically, given a query video and a reference video, spatio-temporal video re-localization aims to localize tubelets in the reference video such that the tubelets semantically correspond t…
We address temporal action localization in untrimmed long videos. This is important because videos in real applications are usually unconstrained and contain multiple action instances plus video content of background scenes or other activities. To address this challenging issue, we exploit the effectiveness of deep networks in temporal action localization via three segment-based 3D ConvNets: (1) a proposal network identifies candidate segments in a long video that may contain actions; (2) a classification network learns one-vs-all action classification model to serve as initialization for the …

There is a growing interest in learning a model which could recognize novel classes with only a few labeled examples. In this paper, we propose Temporal Alignment Module (TAM), a novel few-shot learning framework that can learn to classify a previous unseen video. While most previous works neglect long-term temporal ordering information, our proposed model explicitly leverages the temporal ordering information in video data through temporal alignment. This leads to strong data-efficiency for few-shot learning. In concrete, TAM calculates the distance value of query video with respect to novel …
We propose a novel approach to few-shot action recognition, finding temporally-corresponding frame tuples between the query and videos in the support set. Distinct from previous few-shot works, we construct class prototypes using the CrossTransformer attention mechanism to observe relevant sub-sequences of all support videos, rather than using class averages or single best matches. Video representations are formed from ordered tuples of varying numbers of frames, which allows sub-sequences of actions at different speeds and temporal offsets to be compared. Our proposed Temporal-Relational Cros…
We present a novel method for few-shot video classification, which performs appearance and temporal alignments. In particular, given a pair of query and support videos, we conduct appearance alignment via frame-level feature matching to achieve the appearance similarity score between the videos, while utilizing temporal order-preserving priors for obtaining the temporal similarity score between the videos. Moreover, we introduce a few-shot video classification framework that leverages the above appearance and temporal similarity scores across multiple steps, namely prototype-based training and…

This technical report presents an overview of our solution used in the submission to ActivityNet Challenge 2020 Task 1 (\textbf{temporal action localization/detection}). Existing action localization approaches adopt shallow temporal convolutional networks (\ie, TCN) on 1D feature map extracted from video frames. In this paper, we empirically find that stacking more conventional temporal convolution layers actually deteriorates action classification performance, possibly ascribing to that all channels of 1D feature map, which generally are highly abstract and can be regarded as latent concepts, are excessively recombined in temporal convolution. To address this issue, we introduce a novel concept-wise temporal convolution (CTC) layer as an alternative to conven…
