We present the results of a global fit to the Aligned Two-Higgs Doublet Model, assuming that there are no new sources of CP violation beyond the quark mixing matrix. We use the most constraining flavour observables, electroweak precision measurements and the available data on Higgs signal strengths and collider searches for heavy scalars, together with the theoretical requirements of perturbativity and positivity of the scalar potential. The combination of all these constraints restricts the values of the scalar masses, the couplings of the scalar potential and the flavour-alignment parameters. The numerical fits have been performed using the open-source HEPfit package.
The Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (A2HDM) describes a particular way of enlarging the scalar sector of the Standard Model, with a second Higgs doublet which is aligned to first the one in flavour space. This implies the absence of flavour-changing neutral currents at tree level and the presence of three complex parameters. Within this general approach, we analyze the charged Higgs phenomenology, including CP asymmetries in the K and B systems.
In the left-right symmetric model based on $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry, there appear heavy neutral scalar particles mediating quark flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) at tree level. We consider a situation where such FCNCs give the only sign of the left-right model while $W_R$ gauge boson is decoupled, and name it "semi-aligned two Higgs doublet model" because the model resembles a two Higgs doublet model with mildly-aligned Yukawa couplings to quarks. We predict a correlation among processes induced by quark FCNCs in the model, and argue that future precise c…
In the two-Higgs-Doublet model the alignment of the Yukawa flavour matrices of the two scalar doublets guarantees the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral couplings. The resulting fermion-scalar interactions are parameterized in terms of three complex parameters, leading to a generic Yukawa structure which contains as particular cases all known specific implementations of the model based on Z2 symmetries. These three complex parameters are potential new sources of CP violation.
The alignment in flavour space of the Yukawa matrices of a general two-Higgs-doublet model results in the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents. In addition to the usual fermion masses and mixings, the aligned Yukawa structure only contains three complex parameters, which are potential new sources of CP violation. For particular values of these three parameters all known specific implementations of the model based on discrete Z_2 symmetries are recovered. One of the most distinctive features of the two-Higgs-doublet model is the presence of a charged scalar. In this work, we …
We compute the right top quark coupling in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. In the Standard Model the real part of this coupling is dominated by QCD-gluon-exchange diagram, but the imaginary part, instead, is purely electroweak at one loop. Within this model we show that values for the imaginary part of the coupling up to one order of magnitude larger than the electroweak prediction can be obtained. For the real part of the electroweak contribution we find that it can be up to three orders of magnitude larger than the standard model one. We also present detailed results of the one loop ana…
We perform a complete one-loop computation of the two-body flavour-changing top decays $t \rightarrow c h$ and $t \rightarrow c V$ ($V= γ, Z$), within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. We evaluate the impact of the model parameters on the associated branching ratios, taking into account constraints from flavour data and measurements of the Higgs properties. Assuming that the $125$~GeV Higgs corresponds to the lightest CP-even scalar of the CP-conserving aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we find that the rates for such flavour-changing top decays lie below the expected sensitivity of the futu…
In the two-Higgs-doublet model the alignment of the Yukawa matrices in flavour space guarantees the absence of flavour-changing neutral currents at tree level, while introducing new sources for CP violation parametrized in a very economical way. This implies potentially large influence in a number of processes, b -> s gamma being a prominent example where rather high experimental and theoretical precision meet. We analyze the CP rate asymmetry in this inclusive decay and determine the resulting constraints on the model parameters. We demonstrate the compatibility with previously obtained limit…
We present a complete one-loop computation of the $H^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm Z$ decay in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. The constraints from the electroweak precision observables, perturbative unitarity, vacuum stability and flavour physics are all taken into account along with the latest Large Hadron Collider searches for the charged Higgs. It is observed that a large enhancement of the branching ratio can be obtained in the limit where there is a large splitting between the charged and pseudo-scalar Higgs masses as well as for the largest allowed values of the alignment parameter $ς_u$. …
We evaluate the baryon number abundance based on the charge transport scenario of top quarks in the CP-violating two Higgs doublet model, in which Yukawa interactions are aligned to avoid dangerous flavor changing neutral currents, and coupling constants of the lightest Higgs boson with the mass $125~\mathrm{GeV}$ coincide with those in the standard model at tree level to satisfy the current LHC data. In this model, the severe constraint from the electric dipole moment of electrons, which are normally difficult to be satisfied, can be avoided by destructive interferences between CP-violating p…
The Two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is one of the most studied extensions of the Standard Model. Like the other popular "New Physics" models, it gets more and more constrained by recent experimental progress, especially by the LHC data. For the 2HDM types I and II with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, I present updated results of global analyses obtained with the open-source HEPfit code, emphasizing the impact of the pre-EPS-HEP 2017 LHC data. Furthermore, I discuss the status of implementation into HEPfit of 2HDM's beyond the conventional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric types.
In this note, we show how one can attribute the anomaly currently present in the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($a_μ$) to the presence of an underlying Aligned 2-Higgs Doublet Model (A2HDM) with Right-Handed (RH) neutrinos, $ν_R$. The effects of the latter scenario are driven by one and two-loop topologies wherein a very light CP-odd neutral Higgs state ($A$) contributes significantly to $a_μ$. Over the region of parameter space of our new physics model which explains the aforementioned anomaly, also consistent with the most recent measurements of the electron anomal…
We study the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model with the aligned Yukawa sector (A2HDM) in light of the observed excess measured in the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We take into account the existing theoretical and experimental constraints with up-to-date values and demonstrate that a phenomenologically interesting region of parameter space exists. With a detailed parameter scan, we show a much larger region of viable parameter space in this model beyond the limiting case Type X 2HDM as obtained before. It features the existence of light scalar states with masses $3$ GeV $\lesssim m_H^{} \lesssim 50$ G…
We give a comprehensive study from flavor observables of pion, kaon, D_(s), and B_(s) mesons for limiting the Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) with natural flavor conservation, namely, Z_2 symmetric and aligned type of models. With use of the updated studies and analyses of B -> tau nu, D -> mu nu, D_s -> tau nu, D_s -> mu nu, K -> mu nu, Pi -> mu nu, B^0_s -> mu^+ mu^-, B^0_d -> mu^+ mu^-, tau -> K nu, tau -> Pi nu, B -> X_s gamma, K-K bar mixing, B^0_d-B^0_d bar mixing, and B^0_s-B^0_s bar mixing, we obtain constraints on the parameters in the 2HDMs. To calculate the constraints, we pay atte…
In the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, the alignment of Yukawa matrices in flavour space guarantees the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents, while allowing at the same time for new sources of CP violation, implying potentially large effects in many low-energy processes. In this work we study the constraints from exclusive radiative $B\to Vγ$ decays, where $V$ denotes a light vector meson. The current experimental data on the CP-averaged branching ratios and the direct CP and isospin asymmetries are analyzed. It is found that, while the branching ratios and direct CP asymme…
We study the implications of the LHC heavy neutral Higgs search data on the aligned two Higgs doublet model with softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry. When $\tanβ$ is small, the gluon fusion production of the heavy CP-even scalar $H^0$ or the CP-odd scalar $A^0$ becomes large enough to constrain the model by the current $γγ$, $τ^+τ^-$, and $t\bar{t}$ data. By reinvestigating this small $\tanβ$ region, we find that the indirect constraints like $Δρ$, $b\to s γ$, $ΔM_{B_d}$, $R_b$, $ε_K$, and the perturbativity of running top Yukawa coupling are rather weak to be $\tanβ> 0.5$. The current heavy Higgs se…
The rare decays $B_{s,d}^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ are analyzed within the general framework of the aligned two-Higgs doublet model. We present a complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients, giving a detailed technical summary of our results and comparing them with previous calculations performed in particular limits or approximations. We investigate the impact of various model parameters on the branching ratios and study the phenomenological constraints imposed by present data.
We fit the next-to-leading order unitarity conditions to the Two-Higgs-Doublet model with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In doing so, we alleviate the existing uncertainty on how to treat higher order corrections to quartic couplings of its Higgs potential. A simplified approach to implementing the next-to-leading order unitarity conditions is presented. These new bounds are then combined with all other relevant constraints, including the complete set of LHC Run I data. The upper $95\%$ bounds we find are $4.2$ on the absolute values of the quartic couplings, and $235$ GeV ($100$ GeV…
We perform global fits of Two-Higgs-Doublet models with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to recent results from the LHC detectors CMS and ATLAS, that is signal strengths and direct search limits obtained at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. We combine all available ATLAS and CMS constraints with the other relevant theoretical and experimental bounds and present the latest limits on the model parameters. We obtain that deviations from the so-called alignment limit $β-α=π/2$ cannot be larger than $0.03$ in type I and have to be smaller than $0.02$ in the remaining three types. For…
We determine the next-to-leading order renormalization group equations for the Two-Higgs-Doublet model with a softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry and CP conservation in the scalar potential. We use them to identify the parameter regions which are stable up to the Planck scale and find that in this case the quartic couplings of the Higgs potential cannot be larger than 1 in magnitude and that the absolute values of the S-matrix eigenvalues cannot exceed 2.5 at the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. Interpreting the 125 GeV resonance as the light CP-even Higgs eigenstate, we combine stability constra…
We investigate possible symmetry properties of the scalar sector of Multi-Higgs-Doublet Models, and, to some extent, the generalization of such models to gauge groups other than $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$. In models where the ${\cal C}$ (charge conjugation) violating operator $\hat{C}$ is not present, the scalar potential is invariant under a group larger than the gauge group, O(4) when the Higgs fields are doublets. If the Higgs fields develop aligned vacuum expectation values, this symmetry will break to an O(3) subgroup, which in general is further broken by loop corrections involving the gauge…
The Two Higgs Doublets Model (2HDM) has provided a very useful way to describe a minimal extension of the scalar sector of the Standard Model. In this work, it is shown a scheme that we call Partial Aligned Two Higgs Doublet Model (PA-2HDM) which allows a description of the distinct versions of the 2HDM in a simple way, including those with flavor symmetries. In addition, it is shown a method to diagonalize Yukawa matrices of four-zero texture coming from the 2HDM-III. We provide some phenomenological applications in order to show the model's predictive power.
We discuss the possibility of having a non-minimal scalar sector at the weak scale within the framework of invisible axion models. To frame our discussion we consider an extension of the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky invisible axion model with two additional Higgs doublets blind under the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Due to mixing effects among the scalar fields, it is possible to obtain a rich scalar sector at the weak scale in certain decoupling limits of the theory. In particular, this framework provides an ultraviolet completion of the so-called aligned two-Higgs-doublet model and solves th…
We consider two Higgs doublet models (THDMs) with both the Higgs potential and Yukawa interactions being aligned, which we call "double-aligned THDMs". In this scenario, coupling constants of the discovered Higgs boson to the Standard Model (SM) particles are identical to those of the SM Higgs boson, and flavor changing neutral currents via neutral Higgs bosons do not appear at tree level. We investigate current constraints and future prospects of the model by using measurements from flavor experiments and data of multi-lepton final states at LHC. Especially, we focus on the electroweak pair p…
We explain anomalies currently present in various data samples used for the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of electron ($a_e$) and muon ($a_μ$) in terms of an Aligned 2-Higgs Doublet Model with right-handed neutrinos. The explanation is driven by one and two-loop topologies wherein a very light CP-odd neutral Higgs state ($A$) contributes significantly to $a_μ$ but negligibly to $a_e$, so as to revert the sign of the new physics corrections in the former case with respect to the latter, wherein the dominant contribution is due to a charged Higgs boson ($H^\pm$) and heavy neutrino…
Extended electroweak scalar sectors containing several doublet multiplets require flavour-aligned Yukawa matrices to prevent the appearance at tree level of unwanted flavour- changing neutral-current transitions. We analyse the misalignment induced by one-loop quantum corrections and explore possible generalizations of the alignment condition and their compatibility with current experimental constraints. The hypothesis of flavour alignment at a high scale turns out to be consistent with all known phenomenological tests.
The electroweak radiative correction, which turned out to be marginal within the standard electroweak model having the minimal Higgs sector in view of the present experimental information, fits well the experiment when the Higgs sector is extended to have two Higgs doublets. We predict the range where the charged and CP odd Higgs boson masses would lie, taking the two CP even neutral Higgs boson masses to be degenerate which makes the analysis in multiparameter space feasible. It is shown that the mass of neutral Higgs doublet boson can arbitrarily be large consistently with the $W$ mass, if t…
We consider a simple extension of the electroweak theory, incorporating one $SU(2)_L$ doublet of colour-octet scalars with Yukawa couplings satisfying the principle of minimal flavour violation. Using the HEPfit package, we perform a global fit to the available data, including all relevant theoretical constraints, and extract the current bounds on the model parameters. Coloured scalars with masses below 1.05 TeV are already excluded, provided they are not fermiophobic. The mass splittings among the different (charged and CP-even and CP-odd neutral) scalars are restricted to be smaller than 20 …
We study the rare leptonic decays $B_{s,d}^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ within the general framework of the aligned two-Higgs doublet model. A complete one-loop calculation of the relevant short-distance Wilson coefficients is presented, with a detailed technical summary of the results. The phenomenological constraints imposed by present data on the model parameters are also investigated.
I present comprehensive analyses of the viable parameter regions of the Standard Model of particle physics and two of its extensions: the Standard Model with four fermion generations and the Two-Higgs-Doublets model of type II. Applying frequentist methods, I have performed global fits which show that the Standard Model is compatible with electroweak precision data and the measured Higgs signal strengths. The Standard Model with four generations is excluded by the experimental results with a p-value corresponding to more than five standard deviations. In the Two-Higgs-Doublets model of type II…
The recent discovery of a Standard Model-like boson with mass of about 126 GeV seems to be the first direct information on the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. Using the available experimental data from the LHC and Tevatron we study the implications on the parameter space of the Two-Higgs Doublet Model extension of the Standard Model. The generic structure of the Aligned Two-Higgs Doublet model is imposed in the Yukawa sector; also the models with discrete $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetries are analyzed.
We perform global fits to general two-Higgs doublet models (2HDMs) with generalized couplings using the most updated data from ATLAS, CMS, and Tevatron. We include both scenarios with CP-conserving and CP-violating couplings. By relaxing the requirement on the discrete symmetries that are often imposed on the Yukawa couplings, we try to see which of the 2HDMs is preferred. We found that (i) Higgcision in 2HDMs can be performed efficiently by using only 4 parameters including the charged Higgs contributions to the Higgs couplings to two photons, (ii) the differences among various types of 2HDMs…
Since the current LHC Higgs data suggest the couplings of the observed 125 GeV Higgs boson to be close to the Standard Model (SM) expectations, any extended Higgs sector must lead to the so-called SM alignment limit, where one of the Higgs bosons behaves exactly like that of the SM. In the context of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), this alignment is often associated with either decoupling of the heavy Higgs sector or accidental cancellations in the 2HDM potential. We present a novel symmetry justification for 'natural' alignment without necessarily decoupling or fine-tuning. We show that t…
The LHC is now studying in detail the couplings of the Higgs boson in order to determine if there is new physics. Many recent studies have examined the available fits to Higgs couplings from the perspective of constraining two Higgs doublet models (2HDM). In this paper we extend those studies to include constraints on the one loop couplings of the Higgs to gluons and photons. These couplings are particularly sensitive to the existence of new colored particles that are hard to detect otherwise and we use them to constrain a 2HDM augmented with a color-octet scalar, a possibility motivated by mi…
We update the Standard Model (SM) predictions for the branching ratios of the rare top-quark decays $t \to cg(g)$, and evaluate the maximum rates that can be reached in the aligned as well as in the four conventional two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs) with $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetries. Taking into account the relevant constraints on the model parameters resulting from a global fit obtained at the $95.5\%$ confidence level, we find that the branching ratios of $t \to cg$ and $t \to cgg$ decays can reach up to $3.36\times 10^{-9}$ and $2.95\times 10^{-9}$ respectively, being therefore of the same or…
We discuss the feasibility of spontaneous CP violation being induced by radiative corrections in 2HDM's, emphasizing on a consistent treatment at 1-loop level. Specifically, we analyze the cases of gaugino/higgsino effect on MSSM, and a new model proposed here with an extra, exotic, quark doublet. The latter model is phenomenologically interesting. One conclusion is that some fine tuning is in general needed for the scenario to work. The case for the new model requires a tree level mass mixing between the two Higgses, which fits in the standard SUSY picture. The fine tuning requires is then ve…
In this work, we present preliminary results of a global fit of the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) with the tool $\texttt{GAMBIT}$. Our study includes various constraints, including the theoretical constraints (unitarity, perturbativity and vacuum stability), Higgs searches at colliders, electroweak physics and flavour constraints. With the latest experimental results, our results not only confirm past studies but also go further in probing the model. We find, for example, that the measurements of $B\rightarrow K^*μ^+μ^-$ angular observables cannot be explained in the type-II 2HDM.

Imposing the theoretical constraints from vacuum stability, unitarity and perturbativity as well as the experimental constraints from the electroweak precision data, flavor observables and the non-observation of additional Higgs at collider, we study the implications of available Higgs signals on a two-Higgs-doublet model with the alignment of the down-type quarks and charged lepton Yukawa coupling matrices. Compared to the four traditional types of two-Higgs-doublet models, the model has two additional mixing angles $θ_d$ and $θ_l$ in the down-type quark and charged lepton Yukawa interactions…
Measurements of a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have become increasingly consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). This fact puts severe constraints on many potential low-energy extensions of the Higgs sector of the SM. In the well-known Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), an `alignment limit' of parameters readily furnishes one SM-like scalar, and can be achieved naturally through an underlying symmetry. Among the other physical states of the 2HDM, a charged scalar $H^\pm$ would provide striking evidence of new physics if observed. We propose a novel technique f…
In multi-Higgs-doublet models, the alignment in flavour space of all Yukawa matrices coupling to a given right-handed fermion guarantees the absence of tree-level flavour-changing neutral couplings, while introducing new sources of CP violation. With N Higgs doublets (and no right-handed neutrinos) the Yukawa Lagrangian is characterized by the fermion masses, the CKM quark mixing matrix and 3(N-1) complex couplings. Quantum corrections break the alignment, generating a minimal-flavour-violation structure with flavour-blind phases. The aligned multi-Higgs-doublet models lead to a rich and viabl…
With the hypothesis of minimal flavor violation, we find that there exists a power-aligned relation between the Yukawa couplings of the two scalar doublets in the two-Higgs-doublet model with Hermitian Yukawa matrices. Within such a power-aligned framework, it is found that a simultaneous explanation of the anomalies observed in the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments can be reached with TeV-scale quasi-degenerate Higgs masses, and the resulting parameter space is also phenomenologically safer under the B-physics, $Z$ and $τ$ decay data, as well as the current LHC bounds. Furthermore,…
We compute the one loop right and left anomalous tensor couplings ($g_R$ and $g_L$, respectively) for the top quark, in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. They are the magnetic-like couplings in the most general parameterization of the $tbW$ vertex. We find that the aligned two-Higgs doublet model, that includes as particular cases some of the most studied extensions of the Higgs sector, introduces new electroweak contributions and provides theoretical predictions that are very sensitive to both new scalar masses and the neutral scalar mixing angle. For a large area in the parameters space w…
We study the implementation of global $SO(4)\sim SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetry in general potentials with N-Higgs-doublets in order to obtain models with custodial $SO(3)_C$ symmetry. We conclude that any implementation of the custodial SO(4) symmetry is equivalent, by a basis transformation, to a canonical one if $SU(2)_L$ is the gauge factor, $U(1)_Y$ is embedded in $SU(2)_R$ and we require $N$ copies of the doublet representation of $SU(2)_R$. The invariance by SO(4) automatically leads to a CP invariant potential and the basis of the canonical implementation of SO(4) is aligned to a bas…
In the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we perform a complete one-loop computation of the short-distance Wilson coefficients $C_{7,9,10}^{(\prime)}$, which are the most relevant ones for $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. It is found that, when the model parameter $\left|ς_u\right|$ is much smaller than $\left|ς_d\right|$, the charged-scalar contributes mainly to chirality-flipped $C_{9,10}^\prime$, with the corresponding effects being proportional to $\left|ς_d\right|^2$. Numerically, the charged-scalar effects fit into two categories: (A) $C_{7,9,10}^\mathrm{H^\pm}$ are sizable, but $C_{9,10}…
We consider the possibility to explain the recent $R_K$ and $R_{K ^*}$ anomalies in a 2-Higgs Doublet Model, known as Aligned, combined with a low scale seesaw mechanism generating light neutrino masses and mixings. In this class of models, a large Yukawa coupling allows for significant non-universal leptonic contributions, through box diagrams mediated by charged Higgs bosons and right-handed neutrinos, to the $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transition that can then account for both $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ anomalies.
We examine the constraints on the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) due to the stability of the scalar potential and absence of Landau poles at energy scales below the Planck scale. We employ the most general 2HDM that incorporates an approximately Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with a flavor aligned Yukawa sector to eliminate potential tree-level Higgs-mediated flavor changing neutral currents. Using basis independent techniques, we exhibit robust regimes of the 2HDM parameter space with a 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson that is stable and perturbative up to the Planck scale. Implications for the h…
