The fluctuation behavior of triple quantum dots (TQDs) has, so far, largely focused on current cumulants in the long-time limit via full counting statistics. Given that (TQDs) are non-trivial open quantum systems with many interesting features, such as Aharonov-Bohm interference and coherent population blocking, new fluctuating-time statistics, such as the waiting time distribution (WTD), may provide more information than just the current cumulants alone. In this paper, we use a Born-Markov master equation to calculate the standard and higher-order WTDs for coherentlycoupled TQDs arrayed in triangular ring geometries for several transport regimes. In all cases we find that the WTD displays coherent oscillations that correspond directly to individual time-dependent dot occupation probabilities, a result also reported recently in Ref.[1]. Our analysis, however, goes beyond the single-occupancy and single waiting time regimes, investigating waiting time behavior for TQDs occupied by multiple electrons and with finite electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate that, in these regimes of higher occupancy, quantum coherent effects introduce correlations between successive waiting times, which we can tune via an applied magnetic field. We also show that correlations can be used to distinguish between TQD configurations that have identical FCS and that dark states can be tuned with Aharonov-Bohm interference for more complicated regimes than single-occupancy.
We present a simple yet effective strategy to suppress the leakage in the charge quadrupole qubit system by having the dots in a triangle as opposed to the linear geometry originally conceived. We find that the tunnel coupling between the two outmost dots are amplified in triangular triple dots, which consequently reduces leakage by separating the leaked state and qubit states. We have found that the leakage can be suppressed by as much as five orders of magnitude when the dots form an equilateral triangle, with further improvement of control fidelities possible if composite pulses are applied…
Higher harmonic generation in plane graphene quantum dots initiated by intense coherent radiation is investigated, using dynamical Hartree-Fock mean-field theory. A microscopic theory describing the extreme nonlinear optical response of plane graphene quantum dots is developed. The closed set of differential equations for the single-particle density matrix at the graphene quantum dots-strong laser field multiphoton interaction is solved numerically. The obtained solutions indicate the significance of the type of edge and lateral size, and bandgap and laser field strength in the high harmonic g…
Singlet-triplet states in double quantum dots are promising realizations of qubits, and capacitive coupling can be used to create entanglement between these qubits. We propose an entangling three-qubit gate of singlet-triplet qubits in a triangular setup. Our simulations using a realistic microscopic model show that a maximally entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state can be generated as the qubits are evolved under exchange. Furthermore, our analysis for the gate operation can be used to extract the actual experimental pulse sequence needed to realize this.
With the ever-growing interest in quantum computing, understanding the behaviour of excitons in monolayer quantum dots has become a topic of great relevance. In this paper, we consider a Wannier exciton confined in a triangular quantum dot of hexagonal Boron Nitride. We begin by outlining the adequate basis functions to describe a particle in a triangular enclosure, analyzing their degeneracy and symmetries. Afterwards, we discuss the excitonic hamiltonian inside the quantum dot and study the influence of the quantum dot dimensions on the excitonic states.
Results of calculations and high source-drain transport measurements are presented which demonstrate voltage-tunable entanglement of electron pairs in lateral quantum dots. At a fixed magnetic field, the application of a judiciously-chosen gate voltage alters the ground-state of an electron pair from an entagled spin singlet to a spin triplet.
We present theoretical results based on mean-field and exact many-body approaches showing that in bilayer triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges the magnetism can be controlled by an external vertical electric-field. We demonstrate that without electric field the spins of the two layers of the quantum dot interact ferromagnetically. At a critical value of the electric-field, the total spin of the bilayer structure can be turned off or reduced to a single localized spin, a qubit isolated from contacts and free from interaction with nuclear spins.
We propose two schemes to coherently transfer arbitrary quantum states of the two-electron singlet-triplet qubit across a chain of 3 quantum dots. The schemes are based on electrical control over the detuning energy of the quantum dots. The first is a pulse-gated scheme, requiring dc pulses and engineering of inter- and intra-dot Coulomb energies. The second scheme is based on the adiabatic theorem, requiring time-dependent control of the detuning energy through avoided crossings at a rate that the system remains in the ground state. We simulate the transfer fidelity using typical experimental…
The electronic structure of monolayer MoS$_2$ nanoribbons and quantum dots have been investigated by means of an effective $\mathbf{k}\cdot \mathbf{p}$ two-band model. Both systems with borders exhibit states spatially localized on the edges and with energies lying in the band gap. We show that the conduction and valence band curvatures determine the presence/absence of these states whose origin has been related to the marginal topological properties of the MoS$_2$ single-valley Hamiltonian.
We present a theoretical proposal of a tunable charge qubit, hosted in triple quantum dots. The manipulation is solely performed by changing the heights of the two potential barriers between the three dots, while the energy of all three dots are fixed. We have found that when the relative height of the two barriers are changed, the direction of the axis of rotation in performing single-qubit gates can be varied. On the other hand, the corresponding rotation speed can be tuned by raising or lowering the two barriers at the same time. Our proposal therefore allows for tunability of both the rota…
We demonstrate a mapping between the problem of charge ordering in a triangular array of quantum dots and a frustrated Ising spin model. Charge correlation in the low temperature state is characterized by an intrinsic height field order parameter. Different ground states are possible in the system, with a rich phase diagram. We show that electronic hopping transport is sensitive to the properties of the ground state, and describe the singularities of hopping conductivity at the freezing into an ordered state.
The far-infrared absorption of triangular and square two-dimensional quantum dots is studied by means of time simulations of the density oscillations within the time-dependent local-spin-density approximation. The absorption is spatially analyzed using a local-response theory that allows the identification of {\em corner} and {\em side} modes in the geometric nanostructures. The evolution with a vertical magnetic field of varying intensity is also discussed.
We show that singlet-triplet superpositions of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot undergo a phonon-induced pure dephasing which relies only on the tunnel coupling between the dots and on the Pauli exclusion principle. As such, this dephasing process is independent of spin-orbit coupling or hyperfine interactions. The physical mechanism behind the dephasing is elastic phonon scattering, which persists to much lower temperatures than real phonon-induced transitions. Quantitative calculations performed for a lateral GaAs/AlGaAs gate-defined double quantum dot yield micro-second deph…
The regular array of magnetic particles (magnetic dots) of the form of a two-dimensional triangular lattice in the presence of external magnetic field demonstrates complicated magnetic structures. The magnetic symmetry of the ground state for such a system is lower than that for the underlying lattice. Long range dipole-dipole interaction leads to a specific antiferromagnetic order in small fields, whereas a set of linear topological defects appears with the growth of the magnetic field. Self-organization of such defects determines the magnetization process for a system within a wide range of …
The valley degree of freedom presents challenges and opportunities for silicon spin qubits. An important consideration for singlet-triplet states is the presence of two distinct triplets, comprised of valley vs. orbital excitations. Here we show that both of these triplets are present in the typical operating regime, but that only the valley-excited triplet offers intrinsic protection against charge noise. We further show that this protection arises naturally in dots with stronger confinement. These results reveal an inherent advantage for silicon-based multi-electron qubits.
We present a modulated microwave approach for quantum computing with qubits comprising three spins in a triple quantum dot. This approach includes single- and two-qubit gates that are protected against low-frequency electrical noise, due to an operating point with a narrowband response to high frequency electric fields. Furthermore, existing double quantum dot advances, including robust preparation and measurement via spin-to-charge conversion, are immediately applicable to the new qubit. Finally, the electric dipole terms implicit in the high frequency coupling enable strong coupling with sup…
Recent experiments on semiconductor quantum dots have demonstrated the ability to utilize a large quantum dot to mediate superexchange interactions and generate entanglement between distant spins. This opens up a possible mechanism for selectively coupling pairs of remote spins in a larger network of quantum dots. Taking advantage of this opportunity requires a deeper understanding of how to control superexchange interactions in these systems. Here, we consider a triple-dot system arranged in linear and triangular geometries. We use configuration interaction calculations to investigate the int…
We have studied the magnetoconductance of quantum dots with triangular symmetry and areas down to 0.2 square microns, made in a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas embedded in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure. Semiclassical simulations show that the gross features in the measured magnetoconductance are caused by ballistic effects. Below 1 K we observe a strong periodic oscillation, which may be explained in terms of the Aharanov-Bohm flux quantization through the area of a single classical periodic orbit. From a numerical and analytical analysis of possible trajectories in hard- and soft-w…
We present a tight-binding theory of triangular graphene quantum dots (TGQD) with zigzag edge and broken sublattice symmetry in external magnetic field. The lateral size quantization opens an energy gap and broken sublattice symmetry results in a shell of degenerate states at the Fermi level. We derive a semi-analytical form for zero-energy states in a magnetic field and show that the shell remains degenerate in a magnetic field, in analogy to the 0th Landau level of bulk graphene. The magnetic field closes the energy gap and leads to the crossing of valence and conduction states with the zero…
We present the results of ab-initio density functional theory based calculations of the stability and reconstruction of zigzag edges in triangular graphene quantum dots. We show that, while the reconstructed pentagon-heptagon zigzag edge structure is more stable in the absence of hydrogen, ideal zigzag edges are energetically favored by hydrogen passivation. Zero-energy band exists in both structures when passivated by hydrogen, however in case of pentagon-heptagon zigzag, this band is found to have stronger dispersion, leading to the loss of net magnetization.
Environmental noise usually hinders the efficiency of charge transport through coherent quantum systems; an exception is dephasing-assisted transport (DAT). We show that linear triple quantum dots in a transport configuration and subjected to pure dephasing exhibit DAT if the coupling to the drain reservoir exceeds a threshold. DAT occurs for arbitrarily weak dephasing and the enhancement can be directly controlled by the coupling to the drain. Moreover, for specific settings, the enhanced current is accompanied by a reduction in relative shot noise. We identify the quantum Zeno effect and lon…
We study numerically the optical properties of low-buckled silicene and AB-stacked bilayer graphene quantum dots subjected to an external electric field, which is normal to their surface. Within the tight-binding model, the optical absorption is calculated for quantum dots, of triangular and hexagonal shapes, with zigzag and armchair edge terminations. We show that in triangular silicene clusters with zigzag edges a rich and widely tunable infrared absorption peak structure originates from transitions involving zero energy states. The edge of absorption in silicene quantum dots undergoes red s…
We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence of spin states of two electrons in a lateral double quantum dot in a SiGe/Si/SiGe heterostructure. We consider two types of singlet-triplet spin qubits and calculate their relaxation and decoherence times, in particular as a function of level hybridization, temperature, magnetic field, spin orbit interaction, and detuning between the quantum dots, using Bloch-Redfield theory. We show that the magnetic field gradient, which is usually applied to operate the spin qubit, may reduce the relaxation time by more than an order of ma…
The Dirac equation is solved for triangular and hexagonal graphene quantum dots for different boundary conditions in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We analyze the influence of the dot size and its geometry on their energy spectrum. A comparison between the results obtained for graphene dots with zigzag and armchair edges, as well as for infinite-mass boundary condition, is presented and our results show that the type of graphene dot edge and the choice of the appropriate boundary conditions have a very important influence on the energy spectrum. The single particle energy leve…
We report electronic transport on silicon double and triple dots created with the optimized number of two gates. Using silicon nitride spacers two dots in series are created below two top gates overlapping a silicon nanowire. Coupling between dots is controlled by gate voltages. A third dot is created either by combined action of gate voltages or local doping depending on the spacers length. The main characteristics of the triple dot stability diagram are quantitatively fitted.
The structure stability and electronic properties of edge carboxylated hexagonal and triangular graphene quantum dots are investigated by using density functional theory. The calculated binding energies show that the hexagonal clusters with armchair edges have the highest stability among all other flakes. The binding energy of carboxylated graphene quantum dots increases by increasing the number of attached carboxyl groups. Our study shows that the total dipole moment significantly increases by adding COOH with the highest values observed in triangular clusters. The edge states in triangular g…
We study double quantum dots in a Ge/SiGe heterostructure and test their maturity towards singlet-triplet ($S-T_0$) qubits. We demonstrate a large range of tunability, from two single quantum dots to a double quantum dot. We measure Pauli spin blockade and study the anisotropy of the $g$-factor. We use an adjacent quantum dot for sensing charge transitions in the double quantum dot at interest. In conclusion, Ge/SiGe possesses all ingredients necessary for building a singlet-triplet qubit.
It is demonstrated that parallel weakly coupled quantum dots exhibit non-equilibrium blockade regimes caused by a full occupation in the spin triplet state, in analogy to the Pauli spin blockade in serially weakly coupled quantum dots. Charge tends to accumulate in the two-electron triplet for bias voltages that support transitions between the singlet and three-electron states.
We experimentally investigate the charge (isospin) frustration induced by a geometrical symmetry in a triangular triple quantum dot. We observe the ground-state charge configurations of six-fold degeneracy, the manifestation of the frustration. The frustration results in omnidirectional charge transport, and it is accompanied by nearby nontrivial triple degenerate states in the charge stability diagram. The findings agree with a capacitive interaction model. We also observe unusual transport by the frustration, which might be related to elastic cotunneling and the interference of trajectories …
We study the triplet-singlet relaxation in two-electron semiconductor quantum dots. Both single dots and vertically coupled double dots are discussed. In our work, the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, which plays an important role in the electronic structure, is included. The spin mixing is caused by spin-orbit coupling which is the key to the triplet-singlet relaxation. We show that the selection rule widely used in the literature is incorrect unless near the crossing/anticrossing point in single quantum dots. The triplet/singlet relaxation in double quantum dots can be markedly changed…
The triangular triple quantum dot is an interesting system which can demonstrate various types of the Kondo effects, such as the one due to the local spin S=1 moment caused by the Nagaoka ferromagnetic mechanism and the SU(4) Kondo effect. We theoretically study the low-temperature properties and the Kondo energy scale of the triangular triple quantum dot, using the Wilson numerical renormalization group. We have explored a wide parameter region of the electron-filling and distortions which break the symmetry of an equilateral structure. Our results give a comprehensive overview of how the Kon…
Left-handedness with three zero-absorption windows tuned by the incoherent pumping field and inter-dot tunnelings in a GaAs/AlGaAs triple quantum dots system
We theoretically investigate the quantum transport properties of a triangular triple quantum dot (TTQD) ring connected with two reservoirs by means of analytical derivation and accurate hierarchical-equations-of-motion calculation. A bias-induced chiral current in the absence of magnetic field is firstly demonstrated, which results from that the coupling between spin gauge field and spin current in the nonequilibrium TTQD induces a scalar spin chirality that lifts the chiral degeneracy and thus the time inversion symmetry. The chiral current is proved to oscillate with bias within the Coulomb …
A two-dimensional arrangement of quantum dots with finite inter-dot tunnel coupling provides a promising platform for studying complicated spin correlations as well as for constructing large-scale quantum computers. Here, we fabricate a tunnel-coupled triangular triple quantum dot with a novel gate geometry in which three dots are defined by positively biasing the surface gates. At the same time, the small area in the center of the triangle is depleted by negatively biasing the top gate placed above the surface gates. The size of the small center depleted area is estimated from the Aharonov-Bo…
Weakly coupled quantum dots in the Pauli spin blockade regime are considered with respect to spin-dependent transport. By attaching one half-metallic and one non-magnetic lead, the Pauli spin blockade if formed by a pure triplet state with spin moment $S_z=1$ or -1. Furthermore, additional spin blockade regimes emerge because of full occupation in states with opposite spin to that of the half-metallic lead.
We apply an elementary measurement scheme to calculate the electronic triplet-singlet transition mediated by hyperfine interaction in a double quantum dot. We show how the local character of the hyperfine interaction and the nuclear back-action process (flip-flop) are crucial to cancel destructive interferences of the triplet-singlet transition probability. It is precisely this cancellation which differentiates the hyperfine interaction from an anisotropic magnetic field which mixes the triplet and the singlet eigenstates.
We study generation and dynamics of an exchange spin qubit encoded in three coherently coupled quantum dots with three electrons. For two geometries of the system a linear and a triangular one, the creation and coherent control of the qubit states are performed by the Landau--Zener transitions. In the triangular case both the qubit states are equivalent and can be easily generated for particular symmetries of the system. If one of the dots is smaller than the others one can observe Rabi oscillations, that can be used for coherent manipulation of the qubit states. The linear system is easier to…
We present a scheme for correcting for crosstalk- and noise-induced errors in exchange-coupled singlet-triplet semiconductor double quantum dot qubits. While exchange coupling allows the coupling strength to be controlled independently of the intraqubit exchange couplings, there is also the problem of leakage, which must be addressed. We show that, if a large magnetic field difference is present between the two qubits, leakage is suppressed. We then develop pulse sequences that correct for crosstalk- and noise-induced errors and present parameters describing them for the 24 Clifford gates. We …
We present a theoretical proposal for the Herzberg circuit and controlled accumulation of Berry's phase in a chirality-based coded qubit in a triangular triple quantum dot molecule with one electron spin each. The qubit is encoded in the two degenerate states of a three spin complex with total spin $S=1/2$. Using a Hubbard and Heisenberg model the Herzberg circuit encircling the degeneracy point is realized by adiabatically tuning the successive on-site energies of quantum dots and tunnel couplings across a pair of neighbouring dots. It is explicitly shown that encircling the degeneracy point …
A fundamental question in quantum transport is how quantum coherence influences charge transfer through nanostructures. We address this issue for linear triple quantum dots by comparison of a Lindblad density matrix description with a Pauli rate equation approach and analyze the corresponding zero-frequency counting statistics for coherent and sequential charge tunneling, respectively. The impact of decaying coherences of the density matrix due to dephasing is also studied. Our findings reveal that the sensitivity to coherence shown by shot noise and skewness, in particular in the limit of lar…
We estimate the triplet-singlet relaxation rate due to spin-orbit coupling assisted by phonon emission in weakly-confined quantum dots. Our results for two and four electrons show that the different triplet-singlet relaxation trends observed in recent experiments under magnetic fields can be understood within a unified theoretical description, as the result of the competition between spin-orbit coupling and phonon emission efficiency. Moreover, we show that both effects are greatly affected by the strength of the confinement and the external magnetic field, which may give access to very long-l…
We present a theory of electronic properties of gated triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges as a function of size and carrier density. We focus on electronic correlations, spin and geometrical effects using a combination of atomistic tight-binding, Hartree-Fock and configuration interaction methods (TB+HF+CI) including long range Coulomb interactions. The single particle energy spectrum of triangular dots with zigzag edges exhibits a degenerate shell at the Fermi level with a degeneracy N_{edge} proportional to the edge size. We determine the effect of the electron-electron intera…
Electronic transport through a triple quantum dot system, with only a single dot coupled directly to external leads, is considered theoretically. The model includes Coulomb correlations in the central dot, while such correlations in the two side-coupled dots are omitted. The infinite-U mean-field slave-boson approach is used to obtain basic transport characteristics in the Kondo regime. When tuning position of the side-coupled dots' levels, transition from subradiant to superradiant like mode (and vice versa) has been found in the spectral function, in analogy to the Dicke effect in atomic phy…
We consider a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional nanowire with tunable aspect ratio a. A configuration interaction theory is developed to calculate the energy spectra of the finite 1D quantum dot systems charged with two electrons in the presence of magnetic fields B along the wire axis. Fruitful singlet-triplet transition behaviors are revealed and explained in terms of the competing exchange interaction, correlation interaction, and spin Zeeman energy. In the high aspect ratio regime, the singlet-triplet transitions are shown designable by tuning the parameters a and B. The transiti…
A triangular triple quantum dot gives various Kondo effects, such as the emergence of an electric polarization accompanied by a complete compensation of spin degrees of freedom. The interplay of spin and charge of electrons in quantum dots is investigated using an Anderson model with an equilateral triangular spin cluster, in which a single electron state at one site is hybridized with a conduction band in a lead. The numerical renormalization group analysis shows how a nonzero electric polarization develops with local electrons traveling in the loop and how it depends on the hybridization str…
We analyze transport through both a double quantum dot and a triple quantum dot with inhomogeneous Zeeman splittings in the presence of crossed dc and ac magnetic fields. We find that strongly spin-polarized current can be achieved by tuning the relative energies of the Zeeman-split levels of the dots, by means of electric gate voltages: depending on the energy level detuning, the double quantum dot works either as spin-up or spin-down filter. We show that a triple quantum dot in series under crossed dc and ac magnetic fields can act not only as spin-filter but also as spin-inverter.
We analyze coherent spin phenomena in triple quantum dots in triangular configuration under crossed DC and AC magnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the interplay between Aharonov-Bohm current oscillations, coherent electron trapping and spin blockade under electron spin resonance conditions. We demonstrate that, for certain field frequencies, AC magnetic fields induce an antiresonant behavior in the current, allowing for both removal and restoration of entangled spin blockaded states by tuning the AC field frequency. Our theoretical predictions indicate how to manipulate spin qubits in a …
The singlet-triplet relaxation in nanowire-based quantum dots induced by confined phonons is investigated theoretically. Due to the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the confined phonons, the singlet-triplet relaxation rates exhibit multi-peaks as function of magnetic field and the relaxation rate between the singlet and the spin up triplet state is found to be enhanced at the vicinity of the singlet-triplet anti-crossing. We compare the effect of the deformation-potential coupling and the piezoelectric coupling and find that the deformation-potential coupling dominates the relaxation rates in m…
Charged impurities in semiconductor quantum dots comprise one of the main obstacles to achieving scalable fabrication and manipulation of singlet-triplet spin qubits. We theoretically show that using dots that contain several electrons each can help to overcome this problem through the screening of the rough and noisy impurity potential by the excess electrons. We demonstrate how the desired screening properties turn on as the number of electrons is increased, and we characterize the properties of a double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit for small odd numbers of electrons per dot. We show th…
The band modulation of the silicene and graphene quantum dots is investigated by a first-principles method. This study includes the ordinary silicene and graphene quantum dots and the embedded quantum dots in the hydrogenated silicene and graphene. The shapes and sizes of quantum dots are recognized as important factors for the electronic properties. We studied several types of quantum dots: triangular, parallelogram, rectangular, hexagonal dots. It demonstrates the energy gap of the quantum dot can be tuned by the dot size, the larger of the dot the smaller the energy gap. Moreover, the shape…
Preparation and transfer of quantum states is a fundamental task in quantum information. We propose a protocol to prepare a state in the left and center quantum dots of a triple dot array and transfer it directly to the center and right dots. Initially the state in the left and center dots is prepared combining the exchange interaction and magnetic field gradients. Once in the desired state, ac gate voltages in the outer dots are switched on, allowing to select a given photoassisted long-range path and to transfer the prepared state directly from one edge to the other with high fidelity. We in…
Tunneling in a quantum coherent structure is not restricted to only nearest neighbours. Hopping between distant sites is possible via the virtual occupation of otherwise avoided intermediate states. Here we report the observation of long range transitions in the transport through three quantum dots coupled in series. A single electron is delocalized between the left and right quantum dots while the centre one remains always empty. Superpositions are formed and both charge and spin are exchanged between the outermost dots. Detection of the process is achieved via the observation of narrow reson…
An important requirement for spin-based quantum information processing is reliable and fast readout of electron spin states, allowing for feedback and error correction. However, common readout techniques often require additional gate structures hindering device scaling or impose stringent constraints on the tuning configuration of the sensed quantum dots. Here, we operate an in-line charge sensor within a triple quantum dot, where one of the dots is coupled to a microwave cavity and used to readout the charge states of the other two dots. Owing to the proximity of the charge sensor, we observe…
We report highly tunable control of holes in Ge/Si core/shell nanowires (NWs). We demonstrate the ability to create single quantum dots (QDs) of various sizes, with low hole occupation numbers and clearly observable excited states. For the smallest dot size we observe indications of single-hole occupation. Moreover, we create double and triple tunnel-coupled quantum dot arrays. In the double quantum dot configuration we observe Pauli spin blockade (PSB). These results open the way to perform hole spin qubit experiments in these devices.
