We prove the macroscopic cousins of three conjectures: 1) a conjectural bound of the simplicial volume of a Riemannian manifold in the presence of a lower scalar curvature bound, 2) the conjecture that rationally essential manifolds do not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, 3) a conjectural bound of $L^2$-Betti numbers of aspherical Riemannian manifolds in the presence of a lower scalar curvature bound. The macroscopic cousin is the statement one obtains by replacing a lower scalar curvature bound by an upper bound on the volumes of $1$-balls in the universal cover.
We introduce a $\mathbb{Z}$--coefficient version of Guth's macroscopic stability inequality for almost-minimizing hypersurfaces. In manifolds with a lower bound on macroscopic scalar curvature, we use the inequality to prove a lower bound on areas of hypersurfaces in terms of the Gromov simplicial norm of their homology classes. We give examples to show that a very positive lower bound on macroscopic scalar curvature does not necessarily imply an upper bound on the areas of minimizing hypersurfaces.
We prove a conjecture of Gromov's to the effect that manifolds with isotropic curvature bounded below by 1 (after possibly rescaling) are macroscopically 1-dimensional on the scales greater than 1. As a consequence we prove that compact manifolds with positive isotropic curvature have virtually free fundamental groups. Our main technique is modeled on Donaldson's version of Hörmander technique to produce (almost) holomorphic sections which we use to construct destabilizing sections.
We give the first examples of rationally inessential but macroscopically large manifolds. Our manifolds are counterexamples to the Dranishnikov rationality conjecture. For some of them we prove that they do not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature, thus satisfy the Gromov positive scalar curvature conjecture. Fundamental groups of our manifolds are finite index subgroups of right angled Coxeter groups. The construction uses small covers of convex polyhedrons (or alternatively Davis complexes) and surgery.

In this paper we determine the topology of three-dimensional complete orientable Riemannian manifolds with a uniform lower bound of sectional curvature whose volume is sufficiently small.
In a remarkable article published in 1982, M. Gromov introduced the concept of minimal volume, namely, the minimal volume of a manifold $M^n$ is defined to be the greatest lower bound of the total volumes of $M^n$ with respect to complete Riemannian metrics whose sectional curvature is bounded above in absolute value by 1. While the minimal curvature, introduced by G. Yun in 1996, is the smallest pinching of the sectional curvature among metrics of volume 1. The goal of this article is to provide estimates to minimal volume and minimal curvature on 4-dimensional compact manifolds involving som…
Consider a closed Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ admitting a negatively curved Riemannian metric. We show that for every Riemannian metric on $M$ of sufficiently small volume, there is a point in the universal cover of $M$ such that the volume of every ball of radius $r \geq 1$ centered at this point is greater or equal to the volume of the ball of the same radius in the hyperbolic $n$-space. We also give an interpretation of this result in terms of macroscopic scalar curvature. This result, which holds more generally in the context of polyhedral length spaces, is related to a question of Guth. I…
In this paper we prove the following. Let $Σ$ be an $n$--dimensional closed hyperbolic manifold and let $g$ be a Riemannian metric on $Σ\times \mathbb{S}^1$. Given an upper bound on the volumes of unit balls in the Riemannian universal cover $(\widetilde{Σ\times \mathbb{S}^1},\widetilde{g})$, we get a lower bound on the area of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$--homology class $[Σ\times \ast]$ on $Σ\times \mathbb{S}^1$, proportional to the hyperbolic area of $Σ$. The theorem is based on a theorem of Guth and is analogous to a theorem of Kronheimer and Mrowka involving scalar curvature.
We derive new, sharp lower bounds for certain curvature functionals on the space of Riemannian metrics of a smooth compact 4-manifold with a non-trivial Seiberg-Witten invariant. These allow one, for example, to exactly compute the infimum of the L2-norm of Ricci curvature for all complex surfaces of general type. We are also able to show that the standard metric on any complex hyperbolic 4-manifold minimizes volume among all metrics satisfying a point-wise lower bound on sectional curvature plus suitable multiples of the scalar curvature. These estimates also imply new non-existence results f…
In this paper, an n-dimensional complete open manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and collapsing volume has been investigated. If its radial sectional curvature bounded from below, it shows that such a manifold is of finite topological type under some restrictions shown below.
The goal of this article is to establish estimates involving the Yamabe minimal volume, mixed minimal volume and some topological invariants on compact 4-manifolds. In addition, we provide topological sphere theorems for compact submanifolds of spheres and Euclidean spaces, provided that the full norm of the second fundamental form is suitably bounded.
We show that every closed nonpositively curved manifold with non-trivial volume flux group has zero minimal volume, and admits a finite covering with circle actions whose orbits are homologically essential. This proves a conjecture of Kedra-Kotschick-Morita for this class of manifolds.
We prove that given a hyperbolic manifold endowed with an auxiliary Riemannian metric whose sectional curvature is negative and whose volume is sufficiently small in comparison to the hyperbolic one, we can always find for any radius at least $1$ a ball in its universal cover whose volume is bigger than the hyperbolic one. This result is deduced from a non-sharp macroscopic version of a conjecture by R. Schoen about scalar curvature, whose proof is a variation of an argument due to M. Gromov and based on a smoothing technique. We take the opportunity of this work to present a full account of t…
We are concerned with the study of different notions of curvature on graphs. We show that if a graph has stronger inner-outer curvature growth than a model graph, then it has faster volume growth too. We also study the relationhips of volume growth with other kind of curvatures, such as the Ollivier-Ricci curvature.
We give several Bishop-Gromov relative volume comparisons with integral Ricci curvature which improve the results in \cite{PW1}. Using one of these volume comparisons, we derive an estimate for the volume entropy in terms of integral Ricci curvature which substantially improves an earlier estimate in \cite{Au2} and give an application on the algebraic entropy of its fundamental group. We also extend the almost minimal volume rigidity of \cite{BBCG} to integral Ricci curvature.
We study the provenance of singularity formation under mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow in an axially symmetric setting. We prove that if the mean curvature is uniformly bounded on any finite time interval, then no singularities can develop during that time under both mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow.
We show that closed manifolds supporting a nonpositively curved metric with negative $([\frac{n}{4}]+1)$-Ricci curvature, have positive simplicial volume. This answers a special case of a conjecture of Gromov.
In this paper, we study the topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature and large volume growth. We prove that they have finite topological types under some curvature decay and volume growth conditions. We also generize it to the manifolds with $k$-th asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature by using extensions of Abresch-Gromoll's excess function estimate.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold with Ricci curvature almost bounded from below and $π:\bar{M}\to M$ be a normal, Riemannian cover. We show that, for any nonnegative function $f$ on $M$, the means of $føπ$ on the geodesic balls of $\bar{M}$ are comparable to the mean of $f$ on $M$. Combined with logarithmic volume estimates, this implies bounds on several topological invariants (volume entropy, simplicial volume, first Betti number and presentations of the fundamental group) in Ricci curvature $L^p$-bounded from below.
Motivated by Brendle-Marques-Neves' counterexample to the Min-Oo's conjecture, we prove a volume constrained scalar curvature rigidity theorem which applies to the hemisphere.
We establish a min-max estimate on the volume width of a closed Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. More precisely, we show that every closed Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature admits a PL Morse function whose level set volume is bounded in terms of the volume of the manifold. As a consequence of this sweep-out estimate, there exists an embedded, closed (possibly singular) minimal hypersurface whose volume is bounded in terms of the volume of the manifold.
We prove a Lipschitz-Volume rigidity theorem for the non-collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. This is a counterpart of the Lipschitz-Volume rigidity in Alexandrov geometry.
In this short note, we will prove a volume stability theorem which says that if an n-dimensional toric manifold $M$ admits a $\mathbb{T}^n$ invariant Kähler metric $ω$ with Ricci curvature no less than 1 and its volume is close to the volume of $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $M$ is bi-holomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^n$.
We show that there are topological obstructions for a noncompact manifold to admit a Riemannian metric with quadratic curvature decay and a volume growth which is slower than that of Euclidean space of the same dimension.
We give sufficient conditions for a noncompact Riemannian manifold, which has quadratic curvature decay, to have finite topological type with ends that are cones over spherical space forms.
We give a new proof of a recent result of Munteanu--Wang relating scalar curvature to volume growth on a $3$-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. Our proof relies on the theory of $μ$-bubbles introduced by Gromov as well as the almost splitting theorem due to Cheeger--Colding.
Let N be a (n+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold with a compact Cauchy hypersurface. We consider curvature flows in N with different curvature functions F (including the mean curvature, the gauss curvature and the second elementary symmetric polynomial) and a volume preserving term. Under suitable assumptions we prove the long time existence of the flow and the exponential convergence of the corresponding graphs in the $C^\infty$-topology to a hypersurface of constant F-curvature. Furthermore we examine stability properties and foliations of constant F-curvature hypersurfac…
We obtain a local volume growth for complete, noncompact Riemannian manifolds with small integral bounds and with Bach tensor having finite $L^2$ norm in dimension 4.
Bray's football theorem (\cite{bray2009penrose}) is a weakening of Bishop theorem in dimension 3. It gives a sharp volume upper bound for a three dimensional manifold with scalar curvature larger than $n(n-1)$ and Ricci curvature larger than $\varepsilon$. This paper extends Bray's football theorem in high dimensions, assuming the manifold is axis symmetric or the Ricci curvature has an upper bound.
In this paper we obtain three results concerning the geometry of complete noncompact positively curved Kähler manifolds at infinity. The first one states that the order of volume growth of a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive bisectional curvature is at least half of the real dimension (i.e., the complex dimension). The second one states that the curvature of a complete noncompact Kähler manifold with positive bisectional curvature decays at least linearly in the average sense. The third result is concerned with the relation between the volume growth and the curvature decay. We …
In this note we provide several lower bounds for the volume of a geodesic ball within the injectivity radius in a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold assuming only upper bounds for the Ricci curvature.
In this paper, we prove a classification for complete embedded constant weighted mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We characterize the hyperplanes and generalized round cylinders by using an intrinsic property on the norm of the second fundamental form. Furthermore, we prove an equivalence of properness, finite weighted volume and exponential volume growth for submanifolds with weighted mean curvature of at most linear growth.
In this paper, we investigate the volume-prserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space. We prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow under certain conditions.
It is still an open problem that a complete open Kahler manifold with positive bisectional curvature is Stein. This paper partially resolve the problem by putting a restriction to volume growth condition. The partial solution here improves the observation in ([8], page 341). The improvement is based on assuming a weaker volume growth condition that is not sufficiently maximal.
We study a volume preserving curvature flow of convex hypersurfaces, driven by a power of the $k$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in the principal curvatures. Unlike most of the previous works on related problems, we do not require assumptions on the curvature pinching of the initial datum. We prove that the solution exists for all times and that the speed remains bounded and converges to a constant in an integral norm. In the case of the volume preserving scalar curvature flow, we can prove that the hypersurfaces converge smoothly and exponentially fast to a round sphere.
In this paper, we prove that a critical metric of the volume functional with pinched Weyl curvature is isometric to a geodesic ball in $\mathbb{S}^{n}.$ Moreover, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the norm of the gradient of the potential function in order to classify such critical metrics.
We obtain estimates on nonlocal quantities appearing in the Volume Preserving Mean Curvature Flow (VPMCF) in the closed, Euclidean setting. As a result we demonstrate that blowups of finite time singularities of VPMCF are ancient solutions to Mean Curvature Flow (MCF), prove that monotonicity methods may always be applied at finite times and obtain information on the asymptotics of the flow.
In this paper, we use the normalized Ricci-DeTurk flow to prove a stability result for strictly stable conformally compact Einstein manifolds. As an application, we show a local volume comparison of conformally compact manifolds with scalar curvature $R\geq -n\left(n-1\right)$ and also the rigidity result when certain renormalized volume is zero.
In this article, we study properly immersed complete noncompact submanifolds in a complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton with weighted mean curvature vector bounded in norm. We prove that such a submanifold must have polynomial volume growth under some mild assumption on the potential function. On the other hand, if the ambient manifold is of bounded geometry, we prove that such a submanifold must have at least linear volume growth. In particular, we show that a properly immersed complete noncompact hypersurface in the Euclidean space with bounded Gaussian weighted mean curvature must have …
We study the convergence of an axially symmetric hypersurface evolving by volume preserving mean curvature flow. Assuming the surface is not pinching off along the axis at any time during the flow, and without any additional conditions, as for example on the curvature, we prove that it converges to a hemisphere, when the hypersurface has a free boundary and satisfies Neumann boundary data, and to a sphere when it is compact without boundary.
We prove an optimal control on the time-dependent measure of a measurable set under a reparametrized Lagrangian mean curvature flow of almost calibrated submanifolds in a Calabi-Yau manifold. Moreover we give a classification of those Lagrangian translating solitons in $\mathbb{C}^m$ that evolve by this reparametrized flow
We consider the evolution of a closed convex hypersurface under a volume preserving curvature flow. The speed is given by a power of the m-th mean curvature plus a volume preserving term, including the case of powers of the mean curvature or of the Gauss curvature. We prove that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a suitable pinching condition, the solution exists for all times and converges to a round sphere.
In this paper, we obtain two-sided bounds for the volumes of the Aloff-Wallach spaces $W(p,q),$ compute maximal and minimal sectional curvature for the spaces $W(n,n+1),$ and use this information to estimate the injectivity radii: We derive an upper bound for the injectivity radii of $W(p,q)$ and a lower bound for the injectivity radii of $W(n,n+1).$
We generalize an inequality of E. Heintze and H. Karcher [8] for the volume of tubes around minimal submanifolds to an inequality based on integral bounds for $k$-Ricci curvature. Even in the case of a pointwise bound, this generalizes the classical inequality by replacing a sectional curvature bound with a $k$-Ricci bound. This work is motivated by the estimates of Petersen-Shteingold-Wei for the volume of tubes around a geodesic [12] and generalizes their result. Using similar ideas we also prove a Hessian comparison theorem for $k$-Ricci curvature which generalizes the usual Hessian and Lap…
