Soft diffraction phenomena in elastic nucleon scattering are considered from the viewpoint of the spin dependence of the interaction potential. Spin-dependent pomeron effects are analyzed for elastic $pp$ scattering, spin-dependent differential cross sections and spin correlation parameters are calculated. The spin correlation parameter $A_N$ is examined on the basis of experimental data from $\sqrt{s} = 4.9 \ GeV$ up to $23.4 \ $GeV in the framework of the extended High Energy Generalized Structure (HEGS) model. It is shown that the existing experimental data of proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering at high energy in the region of the diffraction minimum and at large momentum transfer give the support of the existence of the energy-independent part of the hadron spin flip amplitude.
High-energy elastic diffraction of nucleons is considered in the framework of the simplest Regge-eikonal approximation. It is demonstrated explicitly that the effective transverse radius of nucleon in this nonperturbative regime is $\sim 0.2÷0.3$ fm and much less than the transverse size of the diffractive interaction region.
A simple Regge-eikonal model with the eikonal represented as a single-reggeon-exchange term is applied to description of the nucleon-nucleon elastic diffractive scattering at ultra-high energies. The range of validity of the proposed approximation is discussed. The model predictions for the proton-proton cross-sections at the collision energy 14 TeV are given.
The role of the hard Pomeron (HP) exchanges in the high-energy diffractive interaction of nucleons is explored. It is demonstrated that the HP subdominance at available energies and low transferred momenta is due to the extremely low slope of its Regge trajectory.
The processes of exclusive diffractive scattering $p+p\to p+p$, $\bar p+p\to\bar p+p$, and $γ^*+p\to V+p$ at high energies are considered in the framework of a unified Regge-eikonal model with a very simple reggeon structure of the eikonal. It is demonstrated that the pomeron trajectory is universal in all reactions and having intercept about 1.31 which could be exctracted explicitly from the data on the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$. The predictions for the proton-proton cross-sections at LHC energies are given.
Elastic diffractive scattering of nucleons is described in terms of Regge-eikonal approach. It is demonstrated that, in a wide kinematic region (starting from the U-70 energies), the eikonal of proton-proton scattering can be approximated by the sum of two Reggeon exchange terms (namely, the so-called soft Pomeron and $f$-Reggeon contributions). The range of applicability of the considered approximation is determined. The predictive value of the proposed phenomenological scheme is verified.
An analysis of the possible contribution of the hard pomeron in elastic hadron scattering at LHC energies is made. It is shown that such a contribution has affected the shape of the differential cross section in the Coulomb-hadron interference region and in the dip region. On the basis of the new High-Energy General Structure (HEGS) model, the possible contributions of the hard pomeron are investigated. The predictions of the model at $8 \ $ TeV are discussed.
A model for elastic scattering of nucleons (and anti-nucleons) based on the quark-diquark representation of the nucleon with springy Pomeron, providing increased real part of the scattering amplitude, is developed. The model predictions are compared with experimental data for the differential elastic cross-sections of nucleons in the energy range from few GeV up to 7 TeV using available databases.
The pion structure is represented by Generelazed parton distribution functions (GPDs). The momentum transfer dependence of GPDs of the pion was obtained on the basis of the form of GPDs of the nucleon in the framework of the high energy generalized structure (HEGS) model. To this end, different forms of PDFs of the pion of various Collaborations were examined with taking into account the available experimental data on the pion form factors. As a result, the electromagnetic and gravitomagnetic form factors of the pion were calculated. They were used in the framework of the HEGS model with the e…
The spin effects in the elastic proton-proton scattering are analysed at NICA energies. It is shown the importance the investigation of the region of the diffraction minimum in the differential cross sections. Some possible estimation of spin effects are given for the different NICA energies in the framework of the new high energy generelazed structure (HEGS) model.
It is shown that the amplitude for the scattering of a heavy quarkonium system from a nucleon near threshold is completely determined by the fraction of angular momentum, as well as linear momentum, carried by gluons in the nucleon. A form for the quarkonium-nucleon non-relativistic potential is derived.
Measurements of the polarization of the final proton in elastic e-p scattering drastically changed our knowledge about the electromagnetic form factors of the proton. Here we present our results of the calculation of the polarization of the final nucleon in charged current quasi-elastic neutrino nucleon scattering. Relations which connect the axial form factor with the polarization, the cross section and the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are derived. Measurements of the polarization of the nucleon in the high-statistics short baseline neutrino experiments (or in near detectors of…
The diffraction slope parameter is investigated for elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering based on the all available experimental data at low and intermediate momentum transfer values. Energy dependence of the elastic diffraction slopes is approximated by various analytic functions. The expanded "standard" logarithmic approximations with minimum number of free parameters allow to describe experimental slopes in all available energy range reasonably. The estimations of asymptotic shrinkage parameter $α'_{\cal{P}}$ were obtained for various $|t|$ domains based on the all availab…
Different types of high-energy hadron-nucleus cross sections are discussed emphasizing the role played by Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) Short-Range Correlations (SRC) and Gribov Inelastic Shadowing (IS)
We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering at small $t$ and $s$, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. We have built and analyzed an exhaustive dataset and we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region $- 0.5$ GeV$^2 < t <$ $- 0.1$ GeV$^2$, 6 GeV$<\sqrt{s}<$63 GeV. We show that new form factors have to be used, and get information on the trajectories of the soft and hard pomerons.
The different models of elastic nucleon scattering amplitude will be discussed. Especially, the preference of the more general approach based on eikonal model will be summarized in comparison with the West and Yennie amplitude that played an important role in analyzing corresponding experimental data in the past.
New short baseline neutrino experiments open new possibilities of high precision study of different neutrino processes. We present here results of the calculation of the polarization of final nucleon in elastic NC ν_μ(\barν_μ)-nucleon scattering. In a numerical analysis the sensitivity to the different choices of the axial and axial strange form factors is examined. Measurements of the polarization of the final proton in elastic e-p scattering drastically changed our knowledge about the electromagnetic form factors of the proton. From measurement of the nucleon polarization in the NC elastic s…
The commonly used West and Yennie model approach to the description of the interference between Coulomb and hadronic scattering of nucleons is critically examined and its deficiencies are clarified. The preference of the more general eikonal model approach is summarized.
The consequences of a flavor broken SU(3)_f dynamical parton model are studied in the context of the elastic scattering of supersymmetric dark matter off nucleons. It is shown that the predictions of this model differ considerably from those of the commonly applied `standard' parton model. Some notable properties of the dynamical parton model are finally presented and discussed.
In this article it has been shown that the recent PDG Baryon Particle Listings of the Nucleon and Delta states, including some evidence for new states, have excellently incorporated in the unified picture for hadron spectra created earlier \cite{8}. It is claimed that this is a strong confirmation of our theoretical concept. A comparison with experiment is briefly discussed.
Predictions of the elastic proton-proton cross sections at energies of LHC are calculate on the base of the high energy dynamical model. The growth of $ds/dt$ at fixed transfer momenta are shown. The form of eikonal of elastic hadron scattering at super high energies is discussed.
Energy-dependent and single-energy fits to the existing nucleon-nucleon database have been updated to incorporate recent measurements. The fits cover a region from threshold to 3 GeV, in the laboratory kinetic energy, for proton-proton scattering, with an upper limit of 1.3 GeV for neutron-proton scattering. Experiments carried out at the COSY-WASA and COSY-ANKE facilities have had a significant impact on the partial-wave solutions. Results are discussed in terms of both partial-wave and direct reconstruction amplitudes.
We discuss the target and beam normal spin asymmetries in elastic electron-nucleon scattering which depend on the imaginary part of two-photon exchange processes between electron and nucleon. In particular, we estimate these transverse spin asymmetries for beam energies below 2 GeV, where thetwo-photon exchange process is dominated from the resonance contribution to the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor on the nucleon.
We discuss the target and beam normal spin asymmetries in elastic electron-nucleon scattering which depend on the imaginary part of two-photon exchange processes between electron and nucleon. We express this imaginary part as a phase space integral over the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor on the nucleon. We use unitarity to model the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor in the resonance region in terms of $γ^* N \to πN$ electroabsorption amplitudes. Taking those amplitudes from a phenomenological analysis of pion electroproduction observables, we present results for beam and targe…
We comment on the papers "Nucleon elastic form factors and local duality" [Phys. Rev. {\bf D62}, 073008 (2000)] and "Experimental verification of quark-hadron duality" [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 1186 (2000)]. Our main comment is that the reconstruction of the proton magnetic form factor, claimed to be obtained from the inelastic scaling curve thanks to parton-hadron local duality, is affected by an artifact.
The $O(p^4)$ calculation on pion-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude in EOMS scheme within covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory is reviewed. Numerical fits to partial wave amplitudes up to $\sqrt{s}=1.13$ GeV and 1.20 GeV are performed and the results are compared with previous studies.
The occurrence of the Bloom-Gilman duality in the nucleon structure function is investigated by analyzing the Q**2-behavior of low-order moments, both including and excluding the contribution arising from the nucleon elastic peak. The Natchmann definition of the moments has been adopted in order to cancel out target-mass effects. It is shown that the onset of the Bloom-Gilman duality occurs around Q**2 ~ 2 (GeV/c)**2 if only the inelastic part of the nucleon structure function is considered, whereas the inclusion of the nucleon elastic peak contribution leads to remarkable violations of the Bl…
We discuss the two-photon exchange contribution to observables which involve lepton helicity flip in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering. This contribution is accessed through the spin asymmetry for a lepton beam polarized normal to the scattering plane. We estimate this beam normal spin asymmetry at large momentum transfer using a parton model and we express the corresponding amplitude in terms of generalized parton distributions.
The eikonal model must be denoted as strongly preferable for the analysis of elastic high-energy hadron collisions. The given approach allows to derive corresponding impact parameter profiles that characterize important physical features of nucleon collisions, e.g., the range of different forces. The contemporary phenomenological analysis of experimental data is, however, not able to determine these profiles unambiguously, i.e., it cannot give the answer whether the elastic hadron collisions are more central or more peripheral than the inelastic ones. However, in the collisions of mass objects…
Slow nucleons emitted during a hadron-nucleus interaction can give information on the centrality, impact parameter of the collision. The aim of this note is to provide the reader with the important characteristics of the slow nucleons, focusing on their spectra, correlations. This study tries to build on evidences, hence more weight is put on experimental results than on models.
Elastic electron-3He scattering is studied in the relativistic impulse approximation. The amplitudes for the three-nucleon system - 3He - are obtained by solving the relativistic generalization of the Faddeev equation. The charge and magnetic form factor are calculated and compared with the experimental data for the momentum transfer squared up to 100 fm-2. The influence of the various nucleon form factors is investigated.
A behavior of the nucleon structure functions in the resonance region is investigated. Expressions for resonance production form factors, dependent on photon virtuality $Q^2$, which have correct threshold behavior and take into account available data on resonance decays, are obtained. Contributions of resonances to nucleon structure functions are calculated. Obtained expressions are used to investigate the quark-hadron duality in the electron-nucleon scattering processes with the structure function $F_2$ as an example.
A parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude is needed for future experiments with nucleon and nuclear beams in the beam momentum range of 2 -- 50 GeV/c/nucleon. There are many parameterizations of the amplitude at $P_{lab} >$ 25--50 GeV/c, and at $P_{lab} \leq$ 5 GeV/c. Our paper is aimed to cover the range between 5 -- 50 GeV/c. The amplitude is used in Glauber calculations of various cross sections and Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon-nucleon scatterings. Usually, the differential nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections are described by an exponential e…
The explicit formulae for radiative correction (RC) calculation for elastic $ep$-scattering is presented. Two typical measurements of polarization observables such as beam-target asymmetry or recoil proton polarization, are considered. Possibilities to take into account realistic experimental acceptances are discussed. The Fortran code MASCARAD for providing the RC procedure is presented. Numerical analysis is done for kinematical conditions of TJNAF.
We have calculated the polarization of the final nucleon in charged current quasi-elastic ν-N scattering. We show that the longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as their ratio exhibit simple dependence on the axial form factor and their sensitivity to the axial mass is much stronger than that of the cross section. This suggests that measurements of the polarization of the nucleon in the high-statistics neutrino experiments could provide important information on the axial form factor.
We study the hadron production in $p+p$, $p+n$ and $n+n$ reactions within the microscopic Parton-Hadron-Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach in comparison to PYTHIA 8.2. We discuss the details of the "PHSD tune" of the Lund string model (realized by event generators FRITIOF and PYTHIA) in the vacuum (as in $N+N$ collisions) as well as its in-medium modifications relevant for heavy-ion collisions where a hot and dense matter is produced. We compare the results of PHSD and PYTHIA 8.2 (default version) for the excitation function of hadron multiplicities as well as differential rapidity $y$, transv…
The analyses of elastic collisions of charged nucleons have been based standardly on West and Yennie formula. However, this approach has been shown recently to be inadequate from experimental as well as theoretical points of view. The eikonal model seems to be more pertinent as it enables to determine physical characteristics in impact parameter space. The contemporary phenomenological models cannot give, of course, any definite answer as the elastic collisions may be interpreted differently, as central or peripheral processes. Nevertheless, the predictions for the planned LHC energy have been…
The effects of charge symmetry breaking in nucleon electromagnetic form factors on parity- violating elastic electron-12C scattering is studied, and found to be much smaller than other known effects. The analysis of a planned experiment is discussed.
The study of slope parameter is presented for elastic proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering with taking into account the resent experimental data at high energies. The expanded logarithmic approximations allow the description of the experimental slopes in all available energy range reasonably. Accounting for the LHC results leads to the dramatic change of behavior of the quadratic in logarithm approximation at high energies and to the closer trends for all fitting functions under study in comparison with the analysis at collision energies up to the 200 GeV. The estimations of the asym…
In the theoretical analysis of high-energy elastic nucleon scattering one starts commonly from the description based on the validity of optical theorem, which allows to derive the value of total cross section directly from the experimentally measured t-dependence of elastic differential cross section. It may be shown, however, that this theorem has been derived on the basis of one assumption that might be regarded perhaps as acceptable for long-range (e.g., Coulomb) forces but must be denoted as quite unacceptable for finite-range hadron forces. Consequently, the conclusions leading to the inc…
I use the formalism of skewed parton distributions (SPD) to describe elastic form factors of the nucleon. The results are consistent with approximate dipole behavior of $G_{Mp}(Q^2)$ and recent JLab data for the ratio of the proton form factors $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ at $Q^2\leq 3.5$ GeV$^2$. Using the Angular Momentum Sum Rule, I obtain a numerical estimate for the valence quark contributions to the nucleon spin at the level of 50%, with their orbital angular momentum {\it included}. When combined with polarized DIS measurements, this result indicated that the orbital angular momentum of quarks cont…
We present in this paper a calculation of the average proton-nucleus ine- lasticity. Using an Iterative Leading Particle Model and the Glauber model, we relate the leading particle distribution in nucleon-nucleus interactions with the respective one in nucleon-proton collisions. To describe the leading particle distribution in nucleon-proton collisions, we use the Regge-Mueller formalism. To appear in Journal of Physics G.
High energy elastic $p p$ scattering at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at c.m. energy 14 TeV is predicted using the asymptotic behavior of $σ_{tot}(s)$ and $ρ(s)$ known from dispersion relation calculations and the measured elastic $\bar p p$ differential cross section at $\sqrt{s} = 546 {\rm GeV}$. The effective field theory model underlying the phenomenological analysis describes the nucleon as having an outer cloud of quark-antiquark condensed ground state, an inner core of topological baryonic charge of radius $\simeq 0.44F$ and a still smaller valence quark-bag of radius $\lesssim 0.1 {\…
In this paper we prove a new optimal bound on the logarithmic slope of the elastic slope when: elastic cross section and differential cross sections in forward and backward directions are known from experimental data. The results on the experimental tests of this new optimal bound are presented in Sect. 3 for the principal meson-nucleon elastic scatterings: pion-nucleon, kaon-nucleon at all available energies. Then we have shown that the saturation of this optimal bound is observed with high accuracy practically at all available energies in meson-nucleon scattering.
Hadronic yields and yield ratios observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS energy of 158 GeV per nucleon are known to resemble a thermal equilibrium population at T=180 +/- 10 MeV, also observed in elementary e+ + e- to hadron data at LEP. We argue that this is the universal consequence of the QCD parton to hadron phase transition populating the maximum entropy state. This state is shown to survive the hadronic rescattering and expansion phase, freezing in right after hadronization due to the very rapid longitudinal and transverse expansion that is inferred from Bose-Einstein pion correlation an…
The elastic and inelastic profiles have been derived from the measured elastic differential cross section data with the help of exact impact parameter representation of elastic scattering amplitude. The results obtained for $pp$ scattering at energy of 53 GeV and $\bar{p} p$ scattering at energy of 541 GeV have been presented. They indicate that nucleons can be regarded as objects characterized by a small core (diameter $\sim$ 0.4$÷$0.8 fm) and a half transparent outer shell (responsible mainly for elastic hadron scattering).
The momentum-transfer dependence of the slopes of the spin-non-flip and spin-flip amplitudes is analysed. It is shown that the long tail of the hadronic potential in impact parameter space leads for hadron-hadron interactions to a larger value of the slope for the reduced spin-flip amplitude than for the spin-non-flip amplitude. It is shown that the preliminary measurement of AN obtained by the E950 Collaboration confirms such a behaviour of the hadron spin-flip amplitude.
A few chosen nucleon properties are described from a lattice QCD perspective: the nucleon sigma term and the scalar strangeness in the nucleon; the vector form factors in the nucleon, including the vector strangeness contribution, as well as parity breaking effects like the anapole and electric dipole moment; and finally the axial and tensor charges of the nucleon. The status of the lattice calculations is presented and their potential impact on phenomenology is discussed.
We investigate an asymmetry in the angular distribution of hard elastic proton-neutron scattering with respect to 90deg center of mass scattering angle. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the angular asymmetry is related to the helicity-isospin symmetry of the quark wave function of the nucleon. Our estimate of the asymmetry within the quark-interchange model of hard scattering demonstrates that the quark wave function of a nucleon based on the exact SU(6) symmetry predicts an angular asymmetry opposite to that of experimental observations. On the other hand the quark wave function based on …
The effect of the self-energy on the photon-proton elastic scattering is investigated for the backward and the forward directions. The shape of the Thomson scattering at the photon energy $ω\to 0$ is broken by taking into account the self-energy of proton. The electromagnetic polarizabilities $\barα\pm\barβ$ are calculated by the lowest-order perturbative treatment.
Total and differential cross sections for high energy and small momentum transfer elastic hadron-hadron scattering are studied in QCD using a functional integral approach. The hadronic amplitudes are governed by vacuum expectation values of lightlike Wegner-Wilson loops, for which a matrix cumulant expansion is derived. The cumulants are evaluated within the framework of the Minkowskian version of the model of the stochastic vacuum. Using the second cumulant, we calculate elastic differential cross sections for hadron-hadron scattering. The agreement with experimental data is good.
The fragmentation of a colored parton directly into a pair of colorless hadrons is a non-perturbative mechanism that offers important insights into the nucleon structure. Di-hadron fragmentation functions can be extracted from semi-inclusive electron-positron annihilation data. They also appear in observables describing the semi-inclusive production of two hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering of leptons off nucleons or in hadron-hadron collisions. When a target nucleon is transversely polarized, a specific chiral-odd di-hadron fragmentation function can be used as the analyzer of the net densi…
Using the Coulomb Eikonal Phase associated with a transversely polarized nucleon, we calculate the azimuthal single spin asymmetry of unpolarized electrons elastically scattered from a transversely polarized nucleon target. The azimuthal asymmetry in this case is attributed to the fact that in a transversely polarized nucleon, the transverse charge density is no longer axially symmetric and is distorted due to the transverse spin of the nucleon. This asymmetry in the nucleon charge density causes a left-right asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of the scattered electrons. In our approach, …
Elastic lepton scattering off of a nucleon has proved to be an efficient tool to study the structure of the hadron. Modern cross section and asymmetry measurements at Jefferson Lab require effects beyond the leading order Born approximation to be taken into account. Availability of unpolarized beams of both electrons and positrons in respective experiments would enable to reduce systematic uncertainties due to higher-order charge-odd contributions. In addition, information on an unpolarized electron-to-positron cross section ratio could serve as a test for theoretical models that provide predi…
We predict pp elastic differential cross sections at LHC at c.m. energy 14 TeV and momentum transfer range |t| = 0 - 10 GeV*2 in a nucleon-structure model. In this model, the nucleon has an outer cloud of quark-antiquark condensed ground state, an inner shell of topological baryonic charge (r ~ 0.44F) probed by the vector meson omega, and a central quark-bag (r ~ 0.2F) containing valence quarks. We also predict elastic differential cross section in the Coulomb-hadronic interference region. Large |t| elastic scattering in this model arises from valence quark-quark scattering, which is taken to …
In order to illustrate the capabilities of COMPASS using a hadronic beam, I review some of the azimuthal asymmetries in hadronic collisions, that allow for the extraction of transversity, Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions, necessary to explore the partonic spin structure of the nucleon. I also report on some Monte Carlo simulations of such asymmetries for the production of Drell-Yan lepton pairs from the collision of high-energy pions on a transversely polarized proton target.
Taking into account the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, calculated from a new set of $t $-dependent GPDs, a new model including the soft and hard pomerons is build. In the framework of this model the ualitative description of all existing experimental data at $\sqrt{s} \leq 52.8 $ GeV, including the Coulomb range and large momentum transfers, is obtained with only 4 free parameters. Predictions for LHC energies are made.
