In order to illustrate the capabilities of COMPASS using a hadronic beam, I review some of the azimuthal asymmetries in hadronic collisions, that allow for the extraction of transversity, Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions, necessary to explore the partonic spin structure of the nucleon. I also report on some Monte Carlo simulations of such asymmetries for the production of Drell-Yan lepton pairs from the collision of high-energy pions on a transversely polarized proton target.
Predictions for the spin dependent structure function $g_1$ of the nucleon are presented. We use an unified approach incorporating the LO DGLAP evolution and the resummation of double logarithmic terms $ln^2(x)$. We show, that the singular input parametrisation as $x\to 0$ can be a substitute of the $ln^2(x)$ resummation. An impact of the `more running' coupling is discussed. We determine the contribution to the Bjorken sum rule solving the evolution equation for the truncated moment of $g_1^{NS}$. A comparison with the re-analysed HERMES and COMPASS data is given.
We present a study of the Drell-Yan process in pion-proton collisions including next-to-leading-logarithmic threshold-resummed contributions. We analyze rapidity-integrated as well as rapidity-differential cross sections in the kinematic regime relevant for the COMPASS fixed target experiment. We find that resummation leads to a significant enhancement of the cross section compared to fixed-order calculations in this regime. Particularly large corrections arise at large forward and backward rapidities of the lepton pair. We also study the scale dependence of the cross section and find it to be…
COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN. Part of its physics programme is dedicated to study the transverse spin and the transverse momentum structure of the nucleon using SIDIS. For these measurements, data have been collected using transversely polarised proton and deuteron targets. A selection of recent measurements of azimuthal asymmetries using data collected with transversely polarised protons is presented.
A selection is presented of recent results from the COMPASS Collaboration on transverse spin and transverse momentum effects in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) of 160 GeV/c muons off proton and deuteron targets.
COMPASS, a new fixed target experiment at CERN, aimed at the study of nucleon spin structure and hadron spectroscopy, has started to collect physics data in Autumn 2001. This paper describes the COMPASS apparatus and the measurement of the gluon polarisation $ΔG /G$. The apparatus consists in a solid state polarised target and a two stage spectro-meter with high resolution tracking, particle identification and calorimetry, capable of standing high event rates. COMPASS measures the longitudinal spin asymmetry of open charm production in polarised deep inelastic muon nucleon scattering: this asy…
We consider models for the spin transfers to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. We make predictions for longitudinal $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ spin transfers for the COMPASS experiment and for HERA, and for the spin transfer to $Λ$ hyperons produced at JLAB. We demonstrate that accurate measurements of the spin transfers to $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons with COMPASS kinematics have the potential to probe the intrinsic strangeness in the nucleon. We show that a measurement of $\barΛ$ polarisation could provide a clean probe of the spin transfer from $\bar{s}$ quarks…
The observation of the violation of Lam-Tung relation in the $πN$ Drell-Yan process triggered many theoretical speculations. The TMD Boer-Mulders functions characterizing the correlation of transverse momentum and transverse spin for partons in unpolarized hadrons could nicely account for the violation. The COMPASS experiment at CERN will measure the angular distributions of dimuons from the unpolarized Drell-Yan process over a wide kinematic region and study the beam particle dependence. Significant statistics is expected from a successful run in 2015 which will bring further understanding of…
Measurements of the deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) of leptons and nucleons, $e+p\to e+X$, allow the extraction of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) which describe the longitudinal momentum carried by the quarks, anti-quarks and gluons that make up the fast-moving nucleons. While PDFs provide crucial input to perturbative Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) calculations of processes involving hadrons, they do not provide a complete picture of the partonic structure of nucleons. In particular, PDFs contain neither information on the correlations between partons nor on their transverse motion. Hard e…
The first moments of the polarized valence parton distribution functions (PDFs) truncated to the wide Bjorken $x$ region $0.004<x<0.7$ are directly (without any fitting procedure) extracted in the next to leading order (NLO) QCD from both COMPASS and HERMES data on pion production in polarized semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) experiments. The COMPASS and HERMES data are combined in two ways and two scenarios for the fragmentation functions (FFs) are considered. Two procedures are proposed for an estimation of light sea quark contributions to the proton spin. Both of them lead to the conclusion that …
A major part of the future COMPASS program is dedicated to the investigation of the nucleon structure through Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP). COMPASS will measure DVCS and DVMP reactions with a high intensity muon beam of 160 GeV and a 2.5 m-long liquid hydrogen target surrounded by a new TOF system. The availability of muon beams with high energy and opposite charge and polarization will allow to access the Compton form factor related to the dominant GPD $H$ and to study the $x_{B}$-dependence of the $t$-slope of the pure DVCS cross section…
The leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions h_{1L}^{\perp} and h_{1T}^\perp, which is sometimes called "pretzelosity," are studied. For h_{1L}^{\perp} we consider a "Wandzura-Wilczek-type" approximation, which follows from QCD equations of motion upon the neglect of pure twist-3 terms and allows to express it in terms of transversity. On the basis of available data from HERMES we test the practical usefulness of this approximation and discuss how it can be further tested by future CLAS and COMPASS data. We review the theoretical properties of retzelosity and o…
We complete our earlier study of the "direct" part of the cross section and spin asymmetry for the photoproduction process $γN\rightarrow h X$ by analysing the "resolved" contribution, for which the photon couples like a hadron through its parton structure. The incident photon and nucleon are longitudinally polarized and one observes a hadron $h$ at high transverse momentum $p_T$. Soft or collinear gluon emissions generate large logarithmic threshold corrections which we resum to next-to-leading logarithmic order. We compare our results with recent spin asymmetry data by the COMPASS collaborat…
One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment is the exploration of transverse spin structure of nucleon via spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) of polarized leptons (and soon also Drell-Yan (DY) reactions with $π^-$) off transversely polarized target. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and polarized $^6LiD$ and $NH_3$ targets and are foreseen with 190 GeV/c $π^-$ beam on polarized $NH_3$. The experimental results obtained by COMPASS for azimuthal…
The commonly used West and Yennie model approach to the description of the interference between Coulomb and hadronic scattering of nucleons is critically examined and its deficiencies are clarified. The preference of the more general eikonal model approach is summarized.
We present in this paper a calculation of the hadronic flux in the atmosphere. Using an iterative leading particle model and the Glauber model, we relate the moment of the leading particle distribution in nucleon-air collisions with the respective one in nucleon-proton collisions. In this way, we obtain a description of the nucleonic and hadronic fluxes in the atmosphere. Contribution to the 26th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Salt Lake City - Utah, August 1999 (HE 1.2.20).
We derive the nucleon non-perturbative sea-quark distributions coming from a composite model involving quarks and hadronic degrees of freedom. The model predicts a definite structured quark-antiquark asymmetry in the nucleon sea.
COMPASS is a high-energy physics experiment operating at the SPS at CERN. Wide physics program of the experiment comprises study of hadron structure and spectroscopy with high energy muon and hadrons beams. As for the muon-program, one of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment is the exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon via spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off transversely polarized target. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longi…
The different models of elastic nucleon scattering amplitude will be discussed. Especially, the preference of the more general approach based on eikonal model will be summarized in comparison with the West and Yennie amplitude that played an important role in analyzing corresponding experimental data in the past.
The COMPASS experiment at CERN is one of the leading experiments studying the nucleon spin structure. Until 2012 the Parton Distribution Functions and the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions (TMDs) were extensively studied at COMPASS using Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering measurements. In 2015, the Drell-Yan measurements with a negative pion beam interacting with a transversely polarized ammonia target have started and will be continued through 2018. The goal is to access the TMDs of both pions and protons without any prior knowledge about fragmentation function…
We present generalized evolution equations and factorization in terms of the truncated Mellin moments (TMM) of the parton distributions and structure functions. We illustrate the $x$ and $Q^2$ dependence of TMM in the polarized case. Using the TMM approach we compare the integrals of $g_1$ with HERMES and COMPASS data from the limited $x$-ranges.
One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment (CERN, SPS north area) is the exploration of transverse spin structure of nucleon via study of spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries with semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes and recently also with Drell-Yan (DY) reactions. In the past twelve years series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and polarized $^6LiD$ and $NH_3$ targets. Drell-Yan measurements with high energy (190 GeV/c) pion beam and transversely polarized $NH_3$ target started in 2014 with a pilo…
A physical model is presented for the non-perturbative parton distributions in the nucleon. This is based on quantum fluctuations of the nucleon into baryon-meson pairs convoluted with Gaussian momentum distributions of partons in hadrons. The hadronic fluctuations, here developed in terms of hadronic chiral perturbation theory, occur with high probability and generate sea quarks as well as dynamical effects also for valence quarks and gluons. The resulting parton momentum distributions $f(x,Q_0^2)$ at low momentum transfers are evolved with conventional DGLAP equations from perturbative QCD t…
We investigate the transverse target spin asymmetry $A^{\sinϕ_{S}}_{UT}$ for the unpolarized $Λ$ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the transverse momentum of the final-state lambda hyperon being integrated out. The asymmetry is contributed by the product of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ of the nucleon and the collinear twist-3 fragmentation function $\tilde{H}(z)$ of the $Λ$ hyperon. The later one originates from the quark-gluon-quark correlation and is a naive time-reversal-odd function. We calculate $\tilde{H}$ of the $Λ$ hyperon by adopt a diquark…
Exploration of transverse spin structure of the nucleon via study of the spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan (DY) reactions is one of the main aspects of the broad physics program of the COMPASS experiment (CERN, Switzerland). In past decade COMPASS has collected a considerable amount of polarized deuteron and proton SIDIS data, while recent 2014 and 2015 runs were dedicated to the Drell-Yan measurements. Results on SIDIS azimuthal effects provided so far by COMPASS play an important role in general understanding of the thr…
We have previously interpreted the various large apparent violations of the naive Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule found in many channels in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation at LEAR as evidence for an intrinsic polarized $\bar{s}s$ component of the nucleon wave function. The model is further supported by new data from LEAR and elsewhere. Here we discuss in more detail the possible form of the $\bar{s}s$ component of the nucleon wave function, interpret the new data and clarify the relative roles of strangeness shake-out and rearrangement, discuss whether alternative interpretations are still allowed by th…
We discuss some recent developments concerning the nucleon's helicity parton distribution functions: New preliminary data from jet production at RHIC suggest for the first time a non-vanishing polarization of gluons in the nucleon. SIDIS measurements at COMPASS provide better constraints on the strange and light sea quark helicity distributions. Single-longitudinal spin asymmetries in W-boson production have been observed at RHIC and will ultimately give new insights into the light quark and anti-quark helicity structure of the nucleon.
We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon p…
We present a detailed phenomenological study of photoproduction of two hadrons, both with high transverse momentum, in longitudinally polarized lepton-nucleon collisions. We consistently include ``direct'' and ``resolved'' photon contributions and examine the sensitivity of the relevant spin asymmetries to the gluon polarization in the nucleon and to the completely unknown parton content of circularly polarized photons. Our results are relevant for the COMPASS and HERMES fixed-target experiments as well as for a possible future polarized lepton-proton collider like eRHIC at BNL. So far, all st…
By examining the symmetry constraints on the semi-inclusive pseudoscalar particle production in unpolarized inelastic lepton-hadron scattering, we present a complete, exact Lorentz decomposition for the corresponding hadronic tensor. As a result, we find that it contains five independent terms, instead of the four as have been suggested before. The newly identified one is odd under the naive time reversal transformation, and the corresponding structure function is directly related to the single spin asymmetry in the semi-inclusive pseudoscalar meson production by a polarized lepton beam off an…
In this paper a measure of complexity of the system of angle-angular momentum quantum states produced in hadronic scattering is introduced in terms of the scattering entropies. We presented strong experimental evidence for the saturation of the entropic optimal limits in the pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scatterings. The validity of a principle of minimum complexity in hadronic interaction is supported with high accuracy (CL>99%) by the experimental data on pion-nucleon especially at energies higher than 2 GeV.
One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment (SPS, CERN) \cite{Abbon:2007pq} is the exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon via spin dependent azimuthal asymmetries in single-hadron production in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off transversely polarized targets. For this purpose a series of measurements were made in COMPASS, using 160 GeV/c longitudinally polarized muon beam and transversely polarized $^6LiD$ (in 2002, 2003 and 2004) and $NH_3$ (in 2007 and 2010) targets. In the past few years considerable theoretical interest and experimental e…

COMPASS is a high-energy physics experiment operating on the M2 beam line at the SPS at CERN. Using high energy muon and hadron beams the experiment covers broad range of physics aspects in the field of the hadron structure and spectroscopy. One of the important objectives of the COMPASS experiment is the exploration of transverse spin structure of the nucleon via study of spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries with semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes and starting from 2014 also with Drell-Yan (DY) reactions. Experimental results obtained by COMPASS for azimuthal effec…
We calculate the Sivers distribution functions induced by the final-state interaction due to one-gluon exchange in diquark models of nucleon structure, treating the cases of scalar and axial-vector diquarks with both dipole and Gaussian form factors. We use these distribution functions to calculate the Sivers single-spin asymmetries for inclusive pion and kaon production in deep-inelastic scattering. We compare our calculations with the results of HERMES and COMPASS, finding good agreement for pi+ production at HERMES, and qualitative agreement for pi0 and K+ production. Our predictions for pi…
In order to understand the gluon contribution to the nucleon spin, some experiments can study the production of hadrons at high transverse momemtum from lepton-nucleon or nucleon-nucleon scattering. RHIC has recently measured such double spin asymmetries $A_{LL}(p_T)$ for pion production at high center of mass energies, and inclusion of its data to global fits based on NLO collinear pQCD calculations gives some constraints on the gluon polarization in the range $0.05<x_g<0.2$. To complement these results at COMPASS range, we will present preliminary COMPASS results on double longitudinal spin …
We give predictions for the leading order amplitudes for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. We give first estimates for the power corrections to these leading order amplitudes. In particular, we outline examples of experimental opportunities to access the skewed parton distributions at the current high-energy lepton facilities : JLab, HERMES and COMPASS.
In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons on a transversely polarized target eight target transverse spin-dependent azimuthal modulations are allowed. In the QCD parton model half of these asymmetries can be interpreted within the leading order approach and the other four are twist-three contributions. The first two leading twist asymmetries extracted by HERMES and COMPASS experiments are related: one to the transversity distribution and the Collins effect, the other to the Sivers distribution function. These results triggered a lot of interest in the past few years and …
We propose a non-perturbative calculation scheme which is based on the semi-classical approximation of QCD and can be used to evaluate quantities of interest in hadronic physics. As a first application, we evaluate the mass of the pion and of the nucleon. Such masses are related to a particular combination of Green functions which, in some limit, is dominated by the contribution of \emph{very small-sized} instantons. The size distribution of these pseudo-particles is determined by the 't Hooft tunneling amplitude formula and therefore our calculation is free from any model parameters. We prove…
The exploration of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon by measuring spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) and in Drell-Yan processes is one of the main objectives of the COMPASS experiment at CERN (SPS, M2 beamline). During the first phase of the experiment (2002-2011) a series of SIDIS measurements were performed, using a longitudinally polarized muon beam impinging on transversely polarized $^6$LiD or NH$_3$ targets. As a part of the COMPASS-II programme, in 2015 and 2018 the experiment performed Drell-Yan measurements with a $π^-$ beam interacting w…
A formula for the single transverse spin asymmetry in the large-$p_T$ pion production in the nucleon-nucleon collision is derived. We focuss on the chiral-odd contribution where the transversity distribution and the chiral-odd spin-independent twist-3 distribution contributes. This contribution is expected to give rise to a large effect at $x_F\to -1$.
We calculate elementary proton-proton and neutron-proton bremsstrahlung and their contribution to the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass distribution. At 4.9 GeV, the proton-proton contribution is larger than neutron-proton, but it is small compared to recent data. We then make a first calculation of bremsstrahlung in nucleon-nucleon reactions with multi-hadron final states. Again at 4.9 GeV, the many-body bremsstrahlung is larger than simple nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung by more than an order of magnitude in the low-mass region. When the bremsstrahlung contributions are summed with Dalitz decay of the …
We study the relevance of strange degrees of freedom for nucleon structure functions. For this purpose we employ the three flavor generalization of the collective quantization approach to the chiral soliton of the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Contrary to many other soliton models the hadronic tensor is tractable in this model. By applying the Bjorken limit to the hadronic tensor we extract the leading twist contributions to the nucleon structure functions at the low energy scale at which the model is assumed to approximate QCD. After transforming to the infinite momentum frame and perfo…
We review the potential method in lattice QCD, which has recently been proposed to extract nucleon-nucleon interactions via numerical simulations. We focus on the methodology of this approach by emphasizing the strategy of the potential method, the theoretical foundation behind it, and special numerical techniques. We compare the potential method with the standard finite volume method in lattice QCD, in order to make pros and cons of the approach clear. We also present several numerical results for the nucleon-nucleon potentials.
A QCD formula for the polarization in the large-p_T Λhyperon production in the unpolarized nucleon-nucleon collision at large x_F is derived. We focus on the mechanism in which the chiral-odd spin-independent twist-3 quark distribution E_F(x,x) becomes the source of the transversely polarized quarks fragmenting into the polarized Λ. A simple model estimate for that contribution shows the possibility that it gives rise to a sizable Λpolarization.
We present an estimate of a chiral-odd contribution to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in the large-$p_T$ pion production in the nucleon-nucleon collision. In this contribution the transversity distribution and the chiral-odd spin-independent twist-3 distribution appear. Because of the smallness of the corresponding hard cross section, this term turned out to be negligible in all kinematic regions compared with the chiral-even contribution.
We present results of investigations aiming to determine the hadronic interaction of eta and eta-prime mesons with nucleons. Inferences are based on comparisons of both the differential cross sections and the close-to-threshold excitation functions for the p p --> p p eta and p p --> p p eta-prime reactions with predictions based on the assumption that the kinematically available phase space is homogeneously populated. We discuss the phenomenology of the initial and final state interaction, relevance of the hadronic and quark-gluon degrees of freedom for the reaction dynamics, and explain in d…
The high statistics COMPASS results on diffractive dissociation $πN \rightarrow πππN$ suggest that the isospin $I=1$ spin-parity $J^{PC}= 1^{++}$ $a_1(1260)$ resonance could be split into two states: $a_1(1260)$ decaying into an S-wave $ρπ$ system, and $a_1^\prime(1420)$ decaying into a P-wave $f_0(980)π$ system. We analyse the reaction by incorporating our previous treatment of resonant re-scattering corrections in the Drell-Deck forward production process. Our results show that the COMPASS results are fully consistent with the existence of a single axial-vector $a_1$ resonance. The character…
The spin structure function $g_1^p$ of the proton is studied in a two component framework, where the perturbative evolution of parton distributions and nonperturbative vector meson dominance model are used. We predict the $g_1^p$ asymmetric behavior at small $x$ from lower $Q^2$ to higher $Q^2$. We find that the contribution of the large gluon helicity dominates $g_1^p$ at $x>10^{-3}$ but mixed with nonperturbative component which complicates the asymptomatic behavior of $g_1^p$ at $x<10^{-3}$. The results are compatible with the data including the HERA early estimations and COMPASS new result…
An effective field theory program to analyze and interpret hadronic parity violation in two-, three-, and few-nucleon systems is described. Observables can be parameterized in terms of five low-energy constants, which have to be determined from experimental input. Results for parity-violating observables in the two- and three-nucleon sectors are presented, including a discussion of the relevance of parity-violating three-nucleon interactions.
We consider the production of a lepton-antilepton pair by real photons off a hadronic target. The interference of one and two photon exchange amplitudes leads to a charge asymmetry term that may be calculated explicitly in the large-t limit in terms of hadronic distribution amplitudes. A rather compact expression emerges for the leading order asymmetry at fixed angle in the centre-of-mass of the lepton pair. The magnitude appears sizeable and is approximately independent of the pair mass in the asymptotic limit.
We review the information on the spin and orbital angular momentum structure of the nucleon encoded in the T-even transverse momentum dependent parton distributions within light-cone quark models. Model results for azimuthal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering are discussed, showing a good agreement with available experimental data and providing predictions to be further tested by future CLAS, COMPASS and HERMES data.
Hadronic yields and yield ratios observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS energy of 158 GeV per nucleon are known to resemble a thermal equilibrium population at T=180 +/- 10 MeV, also observed in elementary e+ + e- to hadron data at LEP. We argue that this is the universal consequence of the QCD parton to hadron phase transition populating the maximum entropy state. This state is shown to survive the hadronic rescattering and expansion phase, freezing in right after hadronization due to the very rapid longitudinal and transverse expansion that is inferred from Bose-Einstein pion correlation an…
We review the Euclidean path-integral formulation of the nucleon hadronic tensor and classify the gauge invariant and topologically distinct insertions in terms of connected and disconnected insertions and also in terms of leading and higher-twist contributions in the DIS region. Converting the Euclidean hadronic tensor back to the Minkowski space requires solving an inverse problem of the Laplace transform. We have investigated several inverse algorithms and studied the pros and cons of each. We show a result with a relatively large momentum transfer ($Q^2 \sim 4\, {\rm GeV^2}$) to suppress t…
Weak interactions in two-nucleon system at low energies are explored in the framework of effective field theory. We review our recent calculations of parity-violating observables in radiative neutron capture on a proton at threshold where both pionful and pionless theories are employed.
We report an attempt to calculate the deep inelastic scattering structure functions from the hadronic tensor calculated on the lattice. We used the Backus-Gilbert reconstruction method to address the inverse Laplace transformation for the analytic continuation from the Euclidean to the Minkowski space.
Successful realization of polarized Drell-Yan physics program is one of the main goals of the second stage of the COMPASS experiment. Drell-Yan measurements with high energy (190 GeV/c) pion beam and transversely polarized NH3 target have been initiated by a pilot-run in the October 2014 and will be followed by 140 days of data taking in 2015. In the past twelve years COMPASS experiment performed series of SIDIS measurements with high energy muon beam and transversely polarized deuteron and proton targets. Results obtained for Sivers effect and other target transverse spin dependent and unpola…
We demonstrate advantages of the truncated Mellin moments (TMM) approach in the analysis of DIS data. We present a novel method for determination of the Bjorken sum rule (BSR) from restricted in $x$ variable experimental data. We show how to incorporate different uncertainties for each kinematic bin. We apply our analysis to recent COMPASS data.
Even though the total hadronic nucleus-nucleus cross section is among the most fundamental observables, it has only recently been measured precisely for lead-lead collisions at the LHC. This measurement implies the nucleon width should be below 0.7 fm, which is in contradiction with all known state-of-the-art Bayesian estimates. We study the implications of the smaller nucleon width on quark-gluon plasma properties such as the bulk viscosity. The smaller nucleon width dramatically improves the description of several triple-differential observables.
We present a nucleon resonance analysis by simultaneously considering all pion- and photon-induced experimental data on the final states gamma N, pi N, 2 pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and omega N for energies from the nucleon mass up to sqrt(s) = 2 GeV. In this analysis we find strong evidence for the resonances P_{31}(1750), P_{13}(1900), P_{33}(1920), and D_{13}(1950). The omega N production mechanism is dominated by large P_{11}(1710) and P_{13}(1900) contributions. In this first part, we present the results of the pion-induced reactions and the extracted resonance and background properti…
