Laser phase noise remains a limiting factor in many experimental settings, including metrology, time-keeping, as well as quantum optics. Hitherto this issue was addressed at low frequencies, ranging from well below 1 Hz to maximally 100 kHz. However, a wide range of experiments, such as, e.g., those involving nanomechanical membrane resonators, are highly sensitive to noise at higher frequencies in the range of 100 kHz to 10 MHz, such as nanomechanical membrane resonators. Here we employ a fiber-loop delay line interferometer optimized to cancel laser phase noise at frequencies around 1.5 MHz. We achieve noise reduction in 300 kHz-wide bands with a peak reduction of more than 10 dB at desired frequencies, reaching phase noise of less than -160 dB (rad$^2$/Hz) with a Ti:Al$_2$O$_3$ laser. These results provide a convenient noise reduction technique to achieve deep ground-state cooling of mechanical motion.
A broadband chaotic laser with a flat power spectrum extending up to 8.5GHz is achieved by injecting continuous wave laser light into a chaotic diode laser perturbed by fiber random grating induced distributed feedback, which forms a gain-coupled chaotic laser system. More than triple bandwidth enhancement is realized with appropriate frequency detuning between the master and slave lasers. Unlike normal chaotic lasers, the output from such a broadband chaotic laser is free from time-delay signature, which can be applied for practical real-time random number generations and will find useful app…
The spectral resolution of broadband Fourier-transform coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy is limited by the maximum optical path length difference that can be scanned within a short time in an interferometer. However, alternatives to the Fourier-transform exist which can bypass this limitation with certain assumptions. We apply one such approach to broadband coherent Raman spectroscopy using interferometers with short delay line (low Fourier spectral resolution) and large delay line (high Fourier spectral resolution). With this method, we demonstrate broadband coherent Raman spectroscopy …
We describe an all-fiber nonlinear interferometer based on four-wave mixing in highly nonlinear fiber. Our configuration realizes phase-sensitive interference with 97% peak visibility and >90% visibility over a broad 554 GHz optical band. By comparing the output noise power to the shot-noise level, we confirm noise cancellation at dark interference fringes, as required for quantum-enhanced sensitivity. Our device extends nonlinear interferometry to the important platform of highly nonlinear optical fiber, and could find application in a variety of fiber-based sensors.

We propose and verify a method for controlling the frequency dependence of the group delay of electromagnetic waves over a broad frequency range using the Brewster effect in single-layer metamaterials with finite thickness, here referred to as metafilms. When the metafilm's reflectance vanishes regardless of the incident frequency, the group delay can be large near its resonance frequency while maintaining the transmittance close to unity regardless of the incident frequency. Furthermore, when several reflectionless metafilms are stacked together, the total group delay should be given as the s…
We report on the realization of an optical phase noise cancellation technique by passively embedding the optical phase information into a radio frequency (RF) signal and shifting the optical frequency with the amount of phase noise introduced by optical phase perturbations. Neither phase discrimination nor active phase tracking is required due to the open-loop design, mitigating some technical problems, such as the limited compensation speed and the finite phase/timing jitter, in conventional phase noise cancellation. We experimentally demonstrate that this technique maintains the same delay-l…
Optical cavities provide high sensitivity to dispersion since their resonance frequencies depend on the index of refraction. We present a direct, broadband, and accurate measurement of the modes of a high finesse cavity using an optical frequency comb and a mechanical Fourier transform spectrometer with a kHz-level resolution. We characterize 16000 cavity modes spanning 16 THz of bandwidth in terms of center frequency, linewidth, and amplitude. We retrieve the group delay dispersion of the cavity mirror coatings and pure N${_2}$ with 0.1 fs${^2}$ precision and 1 fs${^2}$ accuracy, as well as t…
A channel-cut Si(111) crystal with a channel width of 90 $μ$m was developed for achieving reflection self-seeding in hard X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). With the crystal, a monochromatic seed pulse is produced from a broadband XFEL pulse generated in the first-half undulators with an optical delay of 119 fs at 10 keV. The small optical delay allows a temporal overlap between the seed optical pulse and the electron bunch by using a small magnetic chicane for the electron beam at the middle of the undulator section. A peak reflectivity reached 67%, which is a reasonable value as compared wi…
Metasurfaces have the potential to miniaturize and improve the performance of any optical element, with applications spanning telecommunications, computing and wearable optics. However, the ability to retain functionality over a continuous, broad range of wavelengths is essential for their widespread adoption. So far, efforts to achieve this have been limited to either a reflection configuration or operation at wavelengths other than the visible. Here, we show that by judicious choice of nanostructures, one can independently control both the phase and group delay, leading to broadband transmis…

Terahertz (THz) Time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a broadband spectroscopic technique spreading its uses in multiple fields: in science from material science to biology, in industry where it measures the thickness of a paint layer during the painting operation. Using such practical commercial apparatus with broad spectrum for gas spectroscopy could be a major asset for air quality monitoring and tracking of atmospheric composition. However, gas spectroscopy needs high resolution and the usual approach in THz-TDS, where the recorded time trace is Fourier transform, suffers from resolution l…
Studying the interplay between multiple coupled mechanical resonators is a promising new direction in the field of optomechanics. Understanding the dynamics of the interaction can lead to rich new effects, such as enhanced coupling and multi-body physics. In particular, multi-resonator optomechanical systems allow for distinct dynamical effects due to the optical cavity coherently coupling mechanical resonators. Here, we study the mechanical response of two SiN membranes and a single optical mode, and find that the cavity induces a time delay between the local and cavity-transduced thermal noi…
We introduce a method for breaking Lorentz reciprocity based upon the non-commutation of frequency conversion and delay. The method requires no magnetic materials or resonant physics, allowing for the design of scalable and broadband non-reciprocal circuits. With this approach, two types of gyrators --- universal building blocks for linear, non-reciprocal circuits --- are constructed. Using one of these gyrators, we create a circulator with > 15 dB of isolation across the 5 -- 9 GHz band. Our designs may be readily extended to any platform with suitable frequency conversion elements, including…
Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power ef…
We demonstrate significantly improved performance of a microwave true time delay line (TTDL) based on an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) Kerr optical comb source with a channel spacing of 49GHz, corresponding to 81 channels over the C-band. The broadband microcomb, with a record low free spectral range of 49GHz, results in a large number of comb lines for the TTDL, greatly reducing the size, cost, and complexity of the system. The large channel count results in a high angular resolution and wide beam steering tunable range of the phased array antenna (PAA). The enhancement of PAA perform…
