Existing artificial compression based reinitialization scheme for conservative level set method has a few drawbacks, like distortion of fluid-fluid interface, unphysical patch formation away from the interface and lack of mass conservation. In this paper, a novel reinitialization approach has been presented which circumvents these limitations by reformulating the reinitialization equation. With the reformulated procedure, the present approach is able to reinitialize the level set function without causing any unwanted movement of the interface contour. The unphysical patch formation away from the interface is also resolved here by avoiding the use of ill-conditioned contour normal vectors. As a result of this measure, there is a significant improvement in the mass conservation property. In addition, the simplified form of the new reinitialization equation enables one to choose a much larger time step during the reinitialization iteration. Moreover, the new formulation also helps in reducing the amount of numerical computations per time step, leading to an overall reduction in the computational efforts. In order to evaluate the performance of the present formulation, a set of test problems involving reinitialization of stationary level set functions is carried out first. Then, the efficacy of the proposed reinitialization scheme is demonstrated using a set of standard two-dimensional scalar advection based test problems and incompressible two-phase flow problems. Finally, the ability to deal with complex mesh types is demonstrated by solving a test problem on an unstructured mesh consisting of finite volume cells having triangular and quadrilateral shapes.
Central finite difference schemes have long been avoided in the context of two-phase flows for the advection of the phase indicator function due to numerical overshoots and undershoots associated with their dispersion errors. We will show however, for an incompressible flow, in the context of a specific diffuse interface model, one can maintain the boundedness of the phase field while also taking advantage of the low cost and ease of implementation of central differences to construct a non-dissipative discretization scheme for the advective terms. This is made possible by combining the advecti…
A robust numerical methodology to predict equilibrium interfaces over arbitrary solid surfaces is developed. The kernel of the proposed method is the distance regularized level set equations (DRLSE) with techniques to incorporate the no-penetration and mass-conservation constraints. In this framework, we avoid reinitialization typically used in traditional level set methods. This allows for a more efficient algorithm since only one advection equation is solved, and avoids numerical error associated with the re-distancing step. A novel surface tension distribution, based on harmonic mean, is pr…
We have developed a deterministic conservative solver for the inhomogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation coupled with the Poisson equation, which is a {classical mean-field} primary model for collisional plasmas. Two subproblems, i.e. the Vlasov-Poisson problem and homogeneous Landau problem, are obtained through time-splitting methods, and treated separately by the Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin method and a conservative spectral method, respectively. To ensure conservation when projecting between the two different computing grids, a special conservation routine is designed to link the s…
In this work, we present a subdomain discontinuous least-squares (SDLS) scheme for neutronics problems. Least-squares (LS) methods are known to be inaccurate for problems with sharp total-cross section interfaces. In addition, the least-squares scheme is known not to be globally conservative in heterogeneous problems. In problems where global conservation is important, e.g. k-eigenvalue problems, conservative treatment must be applied. We, in this study, proposed a SDLS method that retains global conservation. Such a method resembles the LS formulation in each subdomain without material interf…
The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has gained much success in a variety of fields involving fluid flow and/or heat transfer. In this method, the bounce-back scheme is a popular boundary scheme for treating nonslip boundaries. However, this scheme leads to staircase-shaped boundaries for curved walls. Therefore many curved boundary schemes have been proposed, but mostly suffer from mass leakage at the curved boundaries. Several correction schemes have been suggested for simulating single-phase flows, but very few discussions or studies have been made for two-phase LB simulations with curved boun…
In this paper, we propose a simple and accurate numerical method for capturing moving interfaces on fixed Eulerian grids by coupling the Tangent of Hyperbola Interface Capturing (THINC) method and Level Set (LS) method. The innovative and practically-significant aspects of the proposed method, so-called THINC/LS method, lie in (1) representing the interface with polynomial of arbitrary-order rather than the plane representation commonly used in the Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) Volume of fluid (VOF) methods, (2) conserving rigorously the mass of the transported VOF field, and (…
This paper discusses the importance of high-frequency damping in high-order conservative finite-difference schemes for viscous terms in the Navier-Stokes equations. Investigating nonlinear instability encountered in a high-resolution viscous shock-tube simulation, we have discovered that a modification to the viscous scheme rather than the inviscid scheme resolves a problem with spurious oscillations around shocks. The modification introduces a term responsible for high-frequency damping that is missing in a conservative high-order viscous scheme. The importance of damping has been known for s…
For more than half a century, most of the plasma scientists have encountered a violation of the conservation laws of charge, momentum, and energy whenever they have numerically solve the first-principle equations of kinetic plasmas, such as the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell system. This fatal problem is brought by the fact that both the Vlasov and Maxwell equations are indirectly associated with the conservation laws by means of some mathematical manipulations. Here we propose a quadratic conservative scheme, which can strictly maintain the conservation laws by discretizing the relativistic Vla…
In this work, a numerical scheme based on a level-set immersed boundary method is employed for the numerical simulation of the flow around two tandem circular cylinders in the subcritical flow regimes. Three different spacing ratios $\ell/\mathcal{D}$ (where $\ell$ is the center-to-center distance between the two cylinders with $\mathcal{D}$ being the diameter of the cylinders) from $2$ to $4$ is considered. The instantaneous flow structures, pressure distributions and hydrodynamic forces on two tandem cylinders are analyzed at a Reynolds number of $\mathcal{R}\mathfrak{e}=2.2\times 10^4$. The…
Semi-Lagrangian schemes have proven to be very efficient to model advection problems. However most semi-Lagrangian schemes are not conservative. Here, a systematic method is introduced in order to enforce the conservative property on a semi-Lagrangian advection scheme. This method is shown to generate conservative schemes with the same linear stability range and the same order of accuracy as the initial advection scheme from which they are derived. We used a criterion based on the column-balance property of the schemes to assess their conservativity property. We show that this approach can be …
An implicit scheme for steady state solutions of diatomic gas flow is presented. The method solves the Rykov model equation in the finite volume discrete velocity method (DVM) framework, in which the translational and rotational degrees of freedom are taken into account. At the cell interface, a difference scheme of the model equation is used to construct a multiscale flux (similar to discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS)), so that the cell size is not constrained by the cell Knudsen (Kn) number. The physical local time step is implemented to preserve the multiscale property in the nonun…
In simulations of compressible flows, the conservative finite difference method (FDM) based on the nonlinear upwind schemes, e.g. WENO5, might violate free-stream preserving (FP), due to the loss of the geometric conservation law (GCL) identity when applied on the curvilinear grids. Although some techniques on FP have been proposed previously, no general rule is given for this issue. In this paper, by rearranging the upwind dissipation of the nonlinear schemes as a combination of sub-stencil reconstructions (taking WENO5 as an example), it can be proved that the upwind dissipation diminishes u…
A positivity-preserving conservative semi-Lagrangian transport model by multi-moment finite volume method has been developed on the cubed-sphere grid. In this paper, two kinds of moments, i.e. point values (PV moment) at cell boundaries and volume integrated average (VIA) value, are defined within a single cell. The PV moment is updated by a conventional semi-Lagrangian method, while the VIA moment is cast by the flux form formulation that assures the exact numerical conservation. Different from the spatial approximation used in CSL2 (conservative semi-Lagrangian scheme with second order polyn…
The primary challenge in solving kinetic equations, such as the Vlasov equation, is the high-dimensional phase space. In this context, dynamical low-rank approximations have emerged as a promising way to reduce the high computational cost imposed by such problems. However, a major disadvantage of this approach is that the physical structure of the underlying problem is not preserved. In this paper, we propose a dynamical low-rank algorithm that conserves mass, momentum, and energy as well as the corresponding continuity equations. We also show how this approach can be combined with a conservat…
In this paper we consider a conservative discretization of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose an extension of Arakawa's classical finite difference scheme for fluid flow in the vorticity-stream function formulation to a high order discontinuous Galerkin approximation. In addition, we show numerical simulations that demonstrate the accuracy of the scheme and verify the conservation properties, which are essential for long time integration. Furthermore, we discuss the massively parallel implementation on graphic processing units.

Magneto-hydrodynamics is one of the foremost models in plasma physics with applications in inertial confinement fusion, astrophysics and elsewhere. Advanced numerical methods are needed to get an insight into the complex physical phenomena. The classical Lagrangian methods are typically limited to the low orders of convergence and suffer from violation of the divergence-free condition for magnetic field or conservation of the invariants. This paper is the first part of a new series about high-order non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamics, where a multi-dimensional conservative Lagrangian method based …
The quasi-neutral hybrid model with kinetic ions and fluid electrons is a promising approach for bridging the inherent multi-scale nature of many problems in space and laboratory plasmas. Here, a novel, implicit, particle-in-cell based scheme for the hybrid model is derived for multi-dimensional electromagnetic problems with multiple ion species, which features global mass, momentum and energy conservation. The scheme includes sub-cycling and orbit averaging of the ions, with cell-centered finite differences and implicit midpoint time advance. To reduce discrete particle noise, the scheme allo…
We present fourth-order conservative non-splitting semi-Lagrangian (SL) Hermite essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes for linear transport equations with applications for nonlinear problems including the Vlasov-Poisson system, the guiding center Vlasov model, and the incompressible Euler equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation. The proposed SL HWENO schemes combine a weak formulation of the characteristic Galerkin method with two newly constructed HWENO reconstruction methods. Fourth-order accuracy is accomplished in both space and time under a non-splitting setting. Mass …
In this paper, we develop a new free-stream preserving (FP) method for high-order upwind conservative finite-difference (FD) schemes on the curvilinear grids. This FP method is constrcuted by subtracting a reference cell-face flow state from each cell-center value in the local stencil of the original upwind conservative FD schemes, which effectively leads to a reformulated dissipation. It is convenient to implement this method, as it does not require to modify the original forms of the upwind schemes. In addition, the proposed method removes the constraint in the traditional FP conservative FD…
The hybrid kinetic-ion fluid-electron plasma model is widely used to study challenging multi-scale problems in space and laboratory plasma physics. Here, a novel conservative scheme for this model employing implicit particle-in-cell techniques is extended to arbitrary coordinate systems via curvilinear maps from logical to physical space. The scheme features a fully non-linear electromagnetic formulation with a multi-rate time advance - including sub-cycling and orbit-averaging for the kinetic ions. By careful choice of compatible particle-based kinetic-ion and mesh-based fluid-electron discre…
A computationally accurate and efficient numerical method under a unified framework is crucial to various multi-scale scientific and engineering problems. So far, many numerical methods have encountered various challenges in efficiently solving multi-scale non-equilibrium flows that cover a wide range of Knudsen numbers, especially the three-dimensional hypersonic flows. In this study, a conservative implicit scheme is further presented for three-dimensional steady flows of diatomic gases in all flow regimes, where both the implicit microscopic kinetic equations based on Rykov model and the co…
This work focuses on the formulation of a four-equation model for simulating unsteady two-phase mixtures with phase transition and strong discontinuities. The main assumption consists in a homogeneous temperature, pressure and velocity fields between the two phases. Specifically, we present the extension of a residual distribution scheme to solve a four-equation two-phase system with phase transition written in a non-conservative form, i.e. in terms of internal energy instead of the classical total energy approach. This non-conservative formulation allows avoiding the classical oscillations ob…
We present the first conservative finite volume numerical scheme for the causal, stable relativistic Navier-Stokes equations developed by Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha, and Kovtun (BDNK). BDNK theory has arisen very recently as a promising means of incorporating entropy-generating effects (viscosity, heat conduction) into relativistic fluid models, appearing as a possible alternative to the so-called Müller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) theory successfully used to model quark-gluon plasma. The major difference between the two lies in the structure of the system of PDEs: BDNK theory only has a set of conse…
In this article we develop a Primitive Variable Recovery Scheme (PVRS) to solve any system of coupled differential conservative equations. This method obtains directly the primitive variables applying the chain rule to the time term of the conservative equations. With this, a traditional finite volume method for the flux is applied in order avoid violation of both, the entropy and "Rankine-Hugoniot" jump conditions. The time evolution is then computed using a forward finite difference scheme. This numerical technique evades the recovery of the primitive vector by solving an algebraic system of…
A hyperbolic system must have a set of linearly independent eigenvectors and corresponding real eigenvalues. In numerical simulations, however, the eigenvalues can be complex because truncation errors pollute a characteristic polynomial of the hyperbolic system. Here we propose an eigenstructure-preserving scheme which always generates the real eigenvalues, even in discrete level. Although the eigenstructure is discussed in a non-conservative formulation, the proposed scheme is locally conservative owing to the skew-symmetric operators.
On this paper, we have proposed an approach to observe the time-centered difference scheme for dissipative mechanical systems from a Hamiltonian perspective and to introduce the idea of symplectic algorithm to dissipative systems. The dissipative mechanical systems discussed in this paper are finite dimensional. This approach is based upon a proposition: for any nonconservative classical mechanical system and any initial condition, there exists a conservative one; the two systems share one and only one common phase curve; the Hamiltonian of the conservative system is the sum of the total energy…
In the present work, we propose a consistent and conservative model for multiphase and multicomponent incompressible flows, where there can be arbitrary numbers of phases and components. Each phase has a background fluid called the pure phase, each pair of phases is immiscible, and components are dissolvable in some specific phases. The model is developed based on the multiphase Phase-Field model including the contact angle boundary condition, the diffuse domain approach, and the analyses on the proposed consistency conditions for multiphase and multicomponent flows. The model conserves the ma…
An optimally efficient explicit numerical scheme for solving fluid dynamics equations, or any other parabolic or hyperbolic system of partial differential equations, should allow local regions to advance in time with their own, locally constrained time steps. However, such a scheme can result in violation of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition, which is manifestly non-local. Although the violations can be considered to be "weak" in a certain sense and the corresponding numerical solution may be stable, such calculation does not guarantee the correct propagation speed for arbitrary wave…
